Series of short self-contained scenes, random conversations (vignettes)—entertaining and a wee bit provocative, especially if you are a woman of 'a certain age'. Helen is in her late-70s, adjusting to the reality of her ageing body, determined to claim her status as 'elder', 'crone', 'senior' with dignity, honesty and joy. Her family have other ideas, refusing to accept that she is, quite possibly, old. Written, performed and produced by Aussie-born, Liverpool-based actress, singer-songwriter and performance poet Flloyd Kennedy, with occasional guest performers. We use Buzzsprout and it makes hosting this podcast a smooth and enjoyable process. ★★★★★ "This is delightful storytelling from Flloyd Kennedy. Gentle but deceptively sharp; underestimate the characters populating this podcast at your own peril. The writing, performance and music are all a joy." Remember how Helen discovered in Season 6 that she could blow litter up into the outer atmosphere, with a single puff of her magic breath? Well, apparently the Institude for Digitised Research in Atlanta, Georgia, is still working on the project to collect it into capsules and shoot it all into the sun.

A glorious spring day, plus the need to keep moving, so I took my phone for a walk and recorded some thoughts. High on my agenda at the moment is the need to keep promoting "Am I Old Yet?", the will to start recording "Baked Off!" and the long held desire to raise the profile of the human voice—what it is, what it means, and what we stand to lose if we fail to respect it. Also, stick around till the end and you'll be introduced to a marvellous podcast, "The Final Say", with Debra Jarvis, available at https://thefinalsaypodcast.com.

So new, that I haven't finished writing it yet. But I'm excited enough to want to share with you something about it. Once I've finished writing, there will be a full cast readthrough, then recording and all the production work begins. But in the meantime, there will be the odd glimpse into whatever Helen is getting up to, in preparation for Season 10. If you have clicked on 'subscribe' or 'follow' in your podcasting app, you'll be notified whenever there's something new to listen to. And if you invite just one other person to listen to "Am I Old Yet? " - well, it would help to keep it going.

This song was originally written for a play-with-music, "Blame it on Your Mother", back in the early 2000s. I thought, at the time, that I was fictionalising my own experience to gift to a character who had more sense than me. But time passed, and as it happened, this is exactly how my relationship with my mother panned out! So yes—another autobiographical song.
I perform it unaccompanied because I don't have a white grand piano and a fantastic accompanist to work with. And my ukulele just doesn't cut the mustard for this particular song.

Back in the mists of time, I wrote a stage play called "Blame it on Your Mother", which consisted of a series of monologues, duologues and songs on the theme of mother/daughter relationships. Here is the voice of the 6 year old, telling it how it is. Enjoy.

At last, the big finale. Helen finds herself the centre of attention, so she has to take advantage of the situation and see if she can get some real changes happening. The Greek Gods are there to make sure she's safe, Team Helen also in support. Pity it's all a fiction, that's all I can say.
This is the end of Season 7. I'm about to launch into the world of Podcast Interviews, but it will take a few weeks to organise. I'll let you know when it's ready. I wrote this poem last July, shortly after the first lockdown began to open up. The acting college where I had been teaching voice part time prior to lockdown invited me to come back into the studio to teach, and I didn't consider it safe—for myself, or for the students—so I declined. It occurred to me that I would almost certainly never be offered such work again. I had been extremely lucky to have kept on teaching at the tertiary level for as long as I had, well into my 70s.
Thoughts on ageing weren't new to me. But this seemed more pressing, especially with all the understanding by that stage that anyone over 80 was especially vulnerable to Covid-19. When 80 is only 4 years away, and those years are accelerating by faster than a Formula 1 car driven by Jensen Button, it feels like tomorrow.
Hence this poem.
It was published in October 2020 as part of the collection "Sunsets & Kites", which is available from Amazon online.
Enjoy! And stay safe.
