Tonight on GeekNights, we review Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. It might be the best cinematic animation ever made. It's the longest animated film every produced by an American studio at 140 minutes. It's a classic for all time. Everyone should watch it immediately. Tonight on GeekNights we talk about GeekNights. Particularly, GeekNights Wednesdays. It's the odd duck of the show, focused not just entirely on the passive consumption of media, but constrained to specific types of media. A meta show! In the news, the Venture Brothers Movie is coming, the original Ken Sugimori Pokemon artwork is on the Internet, Makoto Shinkai's Suzume is in theaters, and there is some important meta information about this movie.

In the news, Rym bought a new wallet, don't watch any more Made in Abyss, the NHL did a cool telemetry-driven hockey broadcast, and Ghibli Fest 2023 is on!

In the news, Cartoon Network celebrates its 30th anniversary, Cartoon Network is kind of screwed, and there's somehow a bunch of anime worth watching this season!
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the feature films of Hayao Miyazaki. They are instantly recognizable and every one of them is worth seeing. In the news, Joe Biden has cancelled a huge amount of student debt (more than you probably realize), the nightmare that was the attempt at a 90s American live-action Sailor Moon has been found in its full glory, the new Beavis and Butthead is fantastic, the novel Paprika was based on is getting a live-action series, the AMC meme-stock is doubling down on this nonsense, and Evangelion Voice Actor Motomu Kiyokawa has passed away at 87.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review Masaaki Yuasa's Inu-Oh (2021). (trailer). Tonight on GeekNights, we review Mamoru Hosoda's Belle. A beautiful film that deals with the disconnect (or the lack thereof) between the online and the real, we have previously reviewed Hosoda's Mirai, The Boy and the Beast, Wolf Children, Summer Wars, and One Piece 6: Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island. In the news, Amazon has ruined Comixology, Hayao Miyazaki's Shuna's Journey is being released in the US, and legendary mecha sesigner Kazutaka Miyatake needs help after suffering a tragic loss. In breaking and dire news, the governor of Texas has criminalized Trans children in a move that can be described as nothing less than openly fascist.
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider anime music, particularly tv shows and OAVs. A good OST has more than just a rockin' opener or closer, it both enhances the show and stands alone. We cover some of the greatest, including Giant Robo, Initial D, Vision of Escaflowne, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Cowboy Bebop, and more. In the news, the under-appreciated and oddly prescient Dennou Coil comes to Netflix, and Scott has a geekbite on Ciguatera.

In the news, Naoki Urasawa is bringing several of his works to digital (in Japan only), Disney's Encanto (2021) is a fantastic musical, and Centaurworld is strangely compelling (and also a musical).
Tonight on GeekNights, we bring you our Holiday Animation and Comics Gift Giving Guide 2021! What should you buy for that animation, comics, anime, or manga fan friend of yours? Not Funkopops: they've released something that's just vile in a long line of vile things. Arcane is one of the best cartoons Rym's seen in a long time. Makoto Shinkai's next film will be Suzume no Tojimari, and it involves clouds, sky, and doors. George Pérez is tragically at the end of his life. Macross Plus was in theaters, introducing a younger generation of fans to its particular dystopian nightmare.
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider our final thoughts on the Rebuild of Evangelion. Spoilers. Just tons of spoilers. Be warned. Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the cartoons of Hanna-Barbera Productions, which were a staple of our 80s childhoods despite being largely from the 60s and 70s. From The Roman Holidays to Fantastic Max, they were a recycled staple of our youth. (Some, like The Good, the Bad, and Huckleberry Hound, are best forgotten entirely). In the news, Belle might be extremely good, Mamoru Hosoda has some thoughts on Miyazaki (and also worked on Utena credited as Katsuyo Hashimoto), and the official Popeye twitter account is fantastic. Also Scott didn't know there was a live action Popeye movie staring Robin Williams and Shelly Duvall.

In the news, the fireworks are back in Queens, Glamdring the Foe-Hammer is back, a ton of cels are up for auction, the Sweet Tooth TV adaptation is pretty good so far, the El Hazard OAVs are getting a re-release, and Yoko Kanno is scoring the live action Cowboy Bebop. Also, we'll be live at PAX East online 2021 with Atari Game Design!

Frog, legendary animator Yasuo Otsuka has passed away, The Great Pretender is definitely worth watching, The Legend of Hei is definitely worth watching, and Raya and the Last Dragon is definitely worth watching!
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider a number of upcoming animated movies and shows we're looking forward to (and in some cases looking forward to more of).
In the news, Studio Ghibli's Earwig and the Witch came out to deeply scathing reviews despite no one talking about how low-budget of an affair it actually was, a bunch of shows are coming to Crunchyroll, Mamoru Hosoda's BELLE has a teaser trailer, and Disney is shutting down Blue Sky, killing the previously upcoming Nimona movie.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the anime movie Lupin III: The First. In the news, The Real Ghostbusters is back, Wandavision is a nice sendup to classic American television, and One Piece is bigger than any comic you're reading.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the delightful Chainsaw Man manga. In the news, Amanda Gorman gave a legendary reading at Joe Biden and Kamala Harris's inauguration, Hilda continues to impress with its second season, and Scott's been reading through his Oglaf books.
Tonight on GeekNights, we celebrate the end of the year and the end of the decade and talk about the last 10 years of Comics and Animation (2010-2020). This is in many ways a golden age of animation, and we expect it to continue. Adventure Time kind of started it all, and ran for the entire decade! Tonight on GeekNights, we review the recent Deca-Dence anime. (Don't worry: no spoilers). Don't read anything about it until you watch it. It takes... a turn. And talk they did.In the news, Katsucon 2021 is cancelled, Beastars 2 is coming January 5th, Venus Wars is getting an English re-release, Discotek is releasing a 4k UHD Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro, the Suppose a Kid From the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town anime looks cute, and Adventure Time: Distant Lands - Obsidian dropped a trailer.

In the news, Rym dug out his ancient joystick, Lupin III: The First is in theaters (but don't go to one), and The Owl House is a fantastic kids' show.

Tonight on GeekNights, we consider your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man in all his incarnations. In the news, check out Bingo Love if you haven't already, the Crunchyroll Expo is this weekend, and Nintendo made a big mistake with pokemonmastersex.
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the Devilman manga, which Scott finished, and Gibiate, which Rym has started watching. In the news, there are a bunch of online anime conventions that people aren't paying enough attention to, KissAnime is finally dead, a ton of older family/children's anime is coming to Youtube free to watch, and a book of essays on Leiji Matsumoto is coming.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the first episode of Adventure Time: Distant Lands: BMO. It's more adventure time, and it doesn't in any way undermine or alter the perfect ending to the show. In the news, Aggretsuko season 3 is coming at the end of August, Kipo's two seasons are 100% worth watching, the Virtual Crunchyroll Expo is coming, and apparently episode zeven of Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 is almost worth watching. Also breaking news we can not wait on: the corrupt and unfit president of the United States is deploying what amount to SA Goons in American cities in a blatant fascist act of oppression. Do not ignore this.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the hot new Trigger anime BNA: Brand New Animal. It's another anime that saved anime, and it's definitely worth watching! Our friends over at the Gay Breakfast podcast consider it from a Queer perspective. In the news, Cheetos ain't worth it, Gary Larson returns with more of The Far Side, and the Slayers light novels are getting an English release! Also keep an eye out for us appearing at the Virtual Crunchyroll Expo!
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider how hard it is for an online-only anime convention to succeed (compared to nearly any other kind of convention). In the news, Annecy Online is still going, A Whisker Away is on Netflix, Scott has finished reading Lone Wolf and Cub. Black lives matter. Donate if you can.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the uninspired Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 anime on Netflix. It's... a show. Honestly, you're better off just dusting off your old Stand Alone Complex DVDs. In the news, Black Lives Matter, racist status are getting pulled down the world over, DC Comics ends its relationship with Diamond Distributors, and Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is a decent kids' show.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review Katie Cook's Nothing Special. It's on webtoons.com, which is a great place to find a ton of similarly good webcomics. In the news, it's easy to stream recent hot anime movies like Promare or The Night is Short, Walk on Girl, Miyazaki's next Ghibli film's production is continuing, the 23rd Pokémon movie is delayed, Sweet Tooth is getting a Netflix series, and Sazae-san is airing reruns for the first time in 45 years.
Tonight on Geeknights, we review the Beastars anime. It's pretty great. If you're looking for a dark psychosexual thriller that somehow evokes both Revolutionary Girl Utena and Sanctuary, this is the show for you! In the news, Japan Post has suspended international mail to many countries, if the Olympics are delayed past 2021 they will be canceled instead, Diamond Distributors plans to resume operations on May 20th, Ducktales season 2 is pretty good, and Tomm Moore's highly anticipated Wolfwalkers is still coming, but it might be an Apple exclusive stream.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the Nobuyuki Fukumoto manga Gambling Apocalypse: KAIJI. Not to be confused with the gambling anime Akagi that we reviewed in 2006. This manga covers the events planned in Mr. Tonegawa: Middle Management Blues. In the news, Masaaki Yuasa has retired as president of the prolific Science SARU studio, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! is good to the end, and Viz licenses the Super Mario Bro. manga.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the delightful new anime from Science Saru, Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! (映像研には手を出すな!). In the news, Anime Boston is canceled, there is an Evangelion gunpla, and Sonic topped Detective Pikachu!
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the latest animated film from Science Saru, Masaaki Yuasa's Ride Your Wave (きみと、波にのれたら). It's exactly what it looks like, but masterfully executed and definitely worth watching. Its themes overlap heavily with Lu Over the Wall, using water as metaphor for death and/or transformation.
In the news, another water-based anime movie Children of the Sea is also in theaters, Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It is definitely an anime, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power continues to get better and better with season four, Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts is so far delightful with some Adventure Time vibes, and the secret entrance to Anime Boston is now gone.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review Makoto Shinkai's latest movie Weathering With You. It's beautiful, but its themes are muddled. We reviewed his The Place Promised in our Early Days back in 2005, and more recently Your Name in 2017. We can forget Children Who Chase Lost Voices, which we talked about in 2011.In the news, Queens bus route meetings attract a particular kind of person, Ride Your Wave is in theaters one night only on February 17th, Funimation dropped a terrible porn anime for which the fandom seems to overlap entirely with the "ahego shirt" crowd, and we will be live at PAX East 2020!
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the all-time classic Batman: The Animated Series. We talked in ancient times about the tv shows of our youth in a general sense, but BTAS is important enough to warrant its own episode! In the news, Weathering With You is worth seeing, Ride Your Wave continues the unstoppable Masaaki Yuasa train, Saint Young Men is coming to English audiences, and The Dragon Prince was good to the end!
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the various issues around manga distribution in the US. Like, when kids search for manga and find more pirate sites than legitimate ones. In the news, Scott beefs with the city of Philadelphia, BNA is coming from Trigger, the Manga Research and Reading Network in New York is pretty awesome, the Otakon Artist Alley "controversy" wasn't what it appeared to be, and we'll see you at MAGFest, PAX South, and PAX East in rapid succession!
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider the 1966 Peanuts television special It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. From an exploration of PTSD and the horrors of war to the inherent fanaticism of religion, it has some surprisingly nuanced elements. In the news, Makoto Shinkai's Weathering Skis will be in American theaters, but you can see it early at Anime NYC, and Disenchantment season 2 is surprisingly good!
Tonight on GeekNights, we review Studio Trigger's first theatrical animated film: Promare. Go see it. It makes Redline look positively tame. It's Studio Trigger: The Anime. In the news, the Lupin III CG trailer looks hot, Carole & Tuesday is utterly fantastic so far, Rie Kugimiya will be a guest at Anime NYC, and the Vic thing is basically over. We've also reviewed a lot of anime over the last 15 or so years of GeekNights. So, here are just the reviews, without the other stuff, on youtube and Patreon! We'll try to get a new one up every week.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the Dr Stone anime. If nothing else, it moves fast. In the news, Archive of Our Own won a Hugo, Sony keeps Spiderman out of Disney's monopolistic clutches (for now), BronyCon comes to an end, and if you didn't know, Neil Gaiman did the English adaptation of Mononoke Hime.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the recently re-released Urusei Yatsura manga by Rumiko Takahashi. It's a fine read if you never got ahold of it the first time around. In the news, after some night market adventures and a search for yuzu paste, Aggretsuko is getting a third season, Megumi Hayashibara Joins the cast of Carole & Tuesday, Disney enters the fray (for now) at $12.99, Bananya gets a second season, and She-Ra is really coming into its own with its third season.
Don't miss Rym and Emily talking about Disney theatrical animation!
Tonight on GeekNights, we consider Kunihiko Ikuhara's recent Sarazanmai. This is not a show for children. You need to know more about Kappa than you think you do. It should be watched with the same care you'd use watching Utena. In the news, our hearts go out to the victims of the tragedy at Kyoto Animation, CATS is back, and Rym may test the waters of Fire Force despite how we may have JUDGED it. Also, read Lone Wolf and Cub.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the entire upcoming Summer 2019 anime season... before we watch any of it. We've been doing this for a while as a youtube show! In the news, New York had another march through the canyon of heroes, Otomo has a new movie on the way, Akira is getting a 4k remaster, Promare is coming, Crunchyroll is partially joining HBO Max, and ConnectiCon is this weekend!Since Evangelion is available on Netflix, recall that we have previously reviewed Evangelion, and also done a deep "final thoughts" show on it!

Season two is still on the way! In the news, Vertigo comics is no more, Neon Genesis Evangelion is on Netflix with a few problems, we have an idea of what the canceled Mouse Guard movie could have been, and the Netflix Watership Down is... OK.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the 1995-96 Gunsmith Cats OAV, directed by Takeshi Mori and based on the manga by Kenichi Sonoda. It's a wild and succinct trip into what 90s anime were like. In the news, Looney Tunes are back, the Utena Musicals are covering Black Rose, a creepy guy sued Funimation, a handy twitter blocklist will keep fans of that creepy guy out of your mentions, and Junji Ito was at TCAF!
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the new remake/redo of Fruits Basket. In the news, Kunihiko Ikuhara directed five episodes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Detective Pikachu is apparently pretty good, and almost everyone who's mad at Adobe is wrong about what they're mad about.
Tonight on GeekNights, we have our final thoughts on the full run of Adventure Time. It's a phenomenal show: there's no other way to say it. We did a mini review back in 2014. Rym didn't even start watching the show until What Was Missing premiered. From the original short in 2008 to the perfect last episode, this show is a treasure. In the news, Castle of Cagliostro and Penguin Highway are playing in NYC, Monkey Punch has passed on, and you can finally read the end of Initial D. Our Rare Game Mechanics and The Real Harm of Games panels are on youtube!
Tonight on GeekNights, rather than talking about traditional webcomics, we consider the ones we stumble upon ad hoc in our social media feeds. Things like False Knees or webcomicname. Hit up the GeekNights Forum to see the list, and also to share the ones we forgot to mention! In the news, Conan the Barbarian is now an Avenger, returned to Marvel, fought Wolverine that one time, and is available again! Also, watch out for these so-called "Vic" fans: they're basically gomergate all over again. We hope to see you at both Zenkaikon and PAX East!
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the delightful Tatami Galaxy anime. Adapted from Tomihiko Morimi's novel, it's worth a watch. Especially if you liked The Night is Short, Walk On Girl or Eccentric Family. In the news, Brian K. Vaughan is writing a live action Gundam film, Galaxy Express 999 was remastered, and Funimation is releasing a Dragon Ball Z collector box if they get enough pre-orders.

In the news, Gundam NT is apparently Gundam "Nice Try," you may recall our review of Gundam F91 from 2006, Battle Angel Alita is inexplicably good, and Katsucon turned itself into a closed profile event, something MAGFest should also do.
Tonight on GeekNights we review the triumph of animation that is Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Go see it immediately if you haven't already. In the news, the New York International Children's Film Festival is on, with some notable anime like Okko's Inn, and Penguin Highway, and Vic Mignogna is actually facing some consequences for his behavior. We've already reviewed the entire current season of anime! Also our Nostalgia vs Game Design and The 40 Games You Must Play panels are up on youtube!
Tonight on GeekNights, we review Mamoru Hosoda's wonderful Mirai (未来のミライ). It's a film about how the imagination of children and the stories they absorb growing up shape them and those around them. It also has the best house in the history of anime. In the news, beware PIN 20, Evangelion is coming to Netflix, Gen Fukunaga is salty about it, and we'll be live at MAGFest and PAX South!

In the news, Bee and Puppycat has some new biz, Sony is pulling Funimation shows off of Crunchyroll et al., (continuing a trend of increasing the pressure to pirate) there some new Undertale biz, TwitchCon was amateur hour, and you can listen to the first published episodes of GeekNights if you truly want some terror in your life!We will be live at PAX Unplugged, and we also reviewed the entire Fall 2018 season of anime!

We're back from the Harlem Valley Rail Ride, the Eisner Awards had a good year, NYCC and Anime Expo are teaming up for something we're definitely avoiding, and Worldcon's treatment of its guests has been a garbage fire.

In the news, Rym is playing his damn trumpet again, HEYYEYAAEYAAEYAEYAA has taken physical form, nazis are trying to march next to Otakon (and you should complain about it), and the United States is in a state of extreme peril that requires you to vote in 2018.
Tonight on GeekNights, we review Umamusume: Pretty Derby. It's... OK. It has some problems. It's basically on one end of a horse-girl anime spectrum. In the news, Boston's nerd convention security problems (the primary reason we stopped performing at Anime Boston despite it being one of the best anime cons in America) continue, AnimeNYC is coming again this year, Bee and Puppycat is getting a second season co-produced by OLM, and Otaku Coin is something to avoid.
The GeekNights Community Forum is pretty great, and you should join it!

Tonight on GeekNights, we review the unique and notable Pop Team Epic. It's the distilled loss-edit WarioWare micro-parody anime phenomenon that probably invaded your social media for a little while. Rym seems to like it. In the news, The Sandman Universe is coming, anime is mainstream, which seems to bother some people, and we'll be live at PAX East!
Tonight on GeekNights, is he a MAN? A DEVIL? A DEVILMAN? We consider the recent hit DEVILMAN crybaby, which has been generating surprising interest and may well be the first introduction of a new generation of anime fans to Go Nagai. Directed by Masaaki Yuasa, it's evocative of the ultra-violent OAVs of 90s US anime fandom, but with a modern sensibility. Warning: it's ultra ultra violent. In the news, DANCE RUSH is up our alley in a way no game has been since DDR, and Rym and Emily have a no-spoiler review of Black Panther. Tonight on GeekNights, we review the classic Beast King GoLion, which you may know as Voltron. GeekNights is live at PAX West 2016 with "The Grind!" Support GeekNights on Patreon! Buy My Shirt!
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the largely mediocre anime: The Lost Village (迷家-マヨイガ-). It would be great if it were actually a parody of shows like this, but it is unfortunately earnest. Jeff Lemire's Black Hammer comes. The New York Comic Con's professional badges are as scarce as the fan badges (and that's a good thing). Change your passwords. We'll be performing at ConnectiCon 2016! The GeekNights Patreon marches ever onward!

In the news, Captain America joins Hydra, and the NYCC is trying something with its badge sellout problem. I guess, and
The GeekNights Tshirt is on Amazon, and the GeekNights Patreon is going strong!
Tonight on GeekNights, we review the awful, minimum-effort exercise in mediocrity that is the Phoenix Wright anime: Ace Attorney. It's not even worth watching one episode: it's just a 100% redo of the first game, with shoddy animation and annoying voice acting. In the news, Katsucon's hotel damage made the rounds in the media, but the real story you should read is that of RainFurrest. You can see their (too little, too late) letter to their attendees, posted before they fully lost the venue. IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOUUUUU!. (Except, probably, for the diapers). Smut Peddler's Monster Boyfriend Anthology features, among many other big names, the creative talent behind Oglaf (NSFW). A how to draw like Ryoichi Ikegami book exists. The GeekNights Patreon has exclusive content, and is very close to its first goal!
