KJAN Sports Director Asa Lucas’ weekly discussion with Atlantic Head Football Coach Joe Brummer. This week we talk about the Week 0 win against T.J. and look forward to second game of the year against Clarke.
2023 saw a 4-5 campaign for the Clarke Indians football program and a quick exit out of the 2A postseason with a 42-7 loss against Roland-Story. In just a year a lot has changed for Clarke including the hiring of their new Head Coach Justin Clutter. Coach Clutter sees a lot of potential within his team and how their underclassman brings a lot of promise in the future.

That high attendance has helped Clarke get stronger and bigger. Players like sophomore Urijah Fry have taken advantage of the summer workouts and earned a starting spot.

https://www.kjan.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/clarke-o-line.mp3Clarke is familiar with Atlantic as the Indians fell to the Trojans 47-33 over a year ago. Coach Clutter has been watching film on Atlantic’s week 0 victory against T.J. and he’s been telling his team to expect hardnosed football.

KJAN Sports Director Asa Lucas’ weekly discussion with Atlantic Head Football Coach Joe Brummer. We get you introduced to the 2024 squad and talk about the Week 0 match-up with the Council Bluffs Jefferson Yellow Jackets.
The 2023-2024 season for Riverside Softball ended in a 7-2 loss to Earlham in the class 1A-Region 2 semifinal and with an overall record of (20-12). No coach wants their team to end the year on a loss and that is especially true for Riverside Head Coach Lacie Patterson. However, coach Patterson did comment on the pride she felt from the tenacity that her team held throughout the entire season.

Two big comeback wins for Riverside on the year was a 6-5 triumph over Griswold and a 2-1 prevail against Woodbine.

The Bulldogs have plenty of skill to go around like eighth grade pitcher Peyton Schafer who showed some tremendous improvement throughout the year. Schafer had a season record of 18-8, 137 strikeouts, opponents’ batting average of .204, and an ERA of 2.91.

Freshman Kayden Schnak led the team in homeruns with 5 and in RBIs at 37. Sydney Somers contributed with 18 hits and 13 walks. Lastly, Adaline Martens who had 20 hits and 12 RBIs. This trio continued to refine themselves the whole summer.

(Atlantic, Iowa) — When it comes to basketball careers, very few have had the success and adventure that Ryan Hawkins has experienced. The Atlantic native was a Division II All-American at Northwest Missouri State University, helping the Bearcats win three national championships. After transferring to Division I Creighton, Hawkins led the Blue Jays in scoring and rebounding. He was named second team All-Big East and helped Creighton to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where they nearly knocked out eventual champion Kansas.
Hawkins finished his lone season at Creighton with 482 points, 272 rebounds, 53 assists, 32 steals, and 13 blocks. Hawkins finished his college basketball career with 2,580 points, 1,220 rebounds, 257 steals, 229 assists, and 82 blocks. He then signed with the Toronto Raptors and played on the G-League squad this past season. For most the dream of playing basketball would end there.
However, Hawkins recently signed a deal with AS Pistoia Basket 2000 and will play in the Lega Basket Serie A (LBA) for 10 months.
Even with little knowledge of the Italian language. Hawkins knows that basketball itself is a universal dialect needing no translator.

The basketball in Europe is some of the most competitive in the world and Hawkins is excited to compete in the league.

The G-League was a positive experience for Hawkins, but he sees the potential in the team focused Euro League. He sees the opportunity to double down on his strengths as a player in Italy and wants to make the most out of his time there.

Atlantic will have their intrasquad scrimmage on the 17th at the Atlantic High School starting at 5:00 p.m. and is free to the public. They will then host the Iowa Girls Coaches Association clinic on the 19th with a wealth of Southwest Iowa teams playing. They will then open the season on August 24th at Des Moines Roosevelt.

The AHSTW Vikings football team is looking for some new faces to lead the way and build off a very successful 2022 campaign. The Vikings went 10-1 and lost in the Class A Quarterfinals to a solid Lynville-Sully team in driving rainstorm to end last season. There are some big shoes to fill but coach GG Harris is encouraged by the leadership he's seen from the new guys.

Luke Sternberg is a key piece back for the Vikings after rushing for 1,791 yards and 25 touchdowns as just a sophomore. Coach Harris said they will start with the ground game and build around it.

Coach Harris said one skill strength this team should possess is speed. He thinks that they can use that team speed to their advantage on both sides of the ball.

Ross Martens
All three winners at the 65th Annual Tournament of Champions this weekend have had the experience before.
Ross Martens of Harlan won his second Open Division crown, shooting an even par 69 in the final round Sunday to capture a 4-stroke win. Martens was challenged just a few times in the final day but made enough key shots to hold his lead. Martens also won the title in 2021. Zach Christianson, who held the day-one lead after an opening round 64 fell just short of the title, finishing second for the third straight year.
Martens started with a -1 round of 68 on Friday, then carded a 5-under 64 on Saturday, and finished with an even par 69 on Sunday to finish at -6, 201 for the weekend. He was thrilled to have the great round on Saturday to grab the title again.

Chris Nelson
In the Senior Division, Chris Nelson of Atlantic built a six-stroke lead heading into the final round and shot an even par 69 to win by six strokes over Bret Taylor. Nelson also has an Open division title to his credit.
In the Super Senior Division, Rick Thompson of Fairfield continues to dominate. He finished the tourney with a four over par 211 total, beating John Willmore by 5 strokes, to capture his fourth straight crown.

The Riverside Bulldog football team struggled in 2022. The Bulldogs managed to nab two wins, one against Sidney and the other at home facing Missouri Valley. However, the two wins felt small compared to an overall record of (2-7). Head Coach Darrell Frain acknowledges that even with how competitive the Bulldogs were last season, a losing record is a hard pill to swallow.

So now the offseason has been dedicated to conditioning and the weight room. Coach Frain wants his players to be in shape and ready for moments when being conditioned really matters.

This summer Coach Frain has seen quite a few of his players dedicated to doing the little things that coaches like to see. The starters returning this year do show a strong promise for the fall. Players like Senior, Grady Jeppesen who learned tremendously under center last year. He had a completion percentage of 54%, nearly threw for 1300 yards, and notched 11 touchdown throws on the year. He'll be accompanied by Senior, Kyler Rieken who rushed for 179 yards and 3 scores.

The Audubon Wheelers football team is hoping some good depth can bring them back to their winning ways in 2023. The Wheelers played for a state championship in 2019, only suffered one loss in 2020, then went to the semifinals in 2021. From that success has come some big standards as you can imagine for Audubon football and that's why they were disappointed with a 4-6 mark in 2022. Audubon head coach Sean Birks said that has made the team hungry this offseason.

Audubon had quite a bit of youth on the field last season. Coach Birks said the added experience from last season should pay off, starting with the quarterback Aaron Olsen.

Olsen threw for 641 yards and 8 touchdowns with 7 interceptions last season, while running for 1,159 yards and 23 scores. Coach Birks is excited about the talent that will surround him this season.

(Anita) — The defending Rolley Volley Conference champs are gearing up for the upcoming volleyball season. Last year saw a conference title, a (24-8) record, and a short run in the Class 1A Region 2 Quarterfinal where they were knocked out 3-0 by the Tri Center Trojans. This offseason for Coach Jenna McDonald and the Cam Cougars has been about working hard. Their gymnasium was under renovations, but Coach McDonald still saw positive progress from her squad.

CAM volleyball is a program that continues to see success thanks to Coach McDonald. They have garnered 3 Rolling Valley Conference titles in the last 3 years. However, Coach McDonald credits the Cougars history of winning to the players and the attitudes they bring each and every day.

The Cougars are also brining back a swarm of seniors and talent with them. Senior, Eva Steffensen is one name that stands out. Steffensen started all 32 matches last year, had 237 kills on 749 attempts, and a kill efficiency of .190. Alongside Steffensen, senior Emma Follmann is another player who has continued to progress and will play a big role in the upcoming season. Follman played in all 32 matches last season, had over 150 kills, and a solid kill efficiency of .148.

Regardless of Indvidual talent, Coach McDonald noted that this year's squad has something special. Their class has been together and played with each other for so long in various sports. That they seem to be glued to each other.

(Exira) — The 2022 season felt disappointing to the Spartan football program. They had a (4-4) record and ended the season on a respectable win of 51-14 against Coon Rapids-Bayard. Even with a large win to cap off the season and staying at .500, Spartan alumni and now Head Coach Drew Buckholdt expected more from his team last year. He felt the team had more talent and didn't play to their full potential.

Now with his inaugural season underway as Head Coach. Coach Buckholdt has the Spartans in the weight room all offseason becoming stronger and using a point system. This point system helps the players learn accountability and the importance of being committed to the program.

Three players from Exira-EHK stand out for their progress in the weight room and leadership off the field. Senior, Jameson Kilworth who emerged from the defense with 22.5 total tackles, 14 solo tackles, and 4 tackles for a loss. Junior, Alex Hansen was a key part of the Spartans rushing game with 20 carries, 110 yards, and 2 touchdowns. In the interior, offensive lineman Josh Nelson has dramatically increased his numbers in the weight room.

(Oakland) — The start of volleyball season is looming and that means a new year for the Riverside Lady Dawgs. While last season is one, they do not want to forget. Considering they had an impressive record of (33-6) and made it to the state volleyball tournament for the first time in program history. Coach Brooke Flathers is present with this year's squad and sees the abundance of competitive players.

Amongst those players a few names stick out. Senior, Carly Henderson, being one with some of the most experience on the team. Henderson played in every match last season and had 10 assists. Junior, Sophia Taylor, another player who was involved in every match of the season. Adding 150 kills on 409 kill attempts and boasting one of the best kill efficiency percentages on her squad with .025.

The Griswold Tigers football team will have a new coach and rejuvenated attitude for the upcoming 2023 season. Seth Lembke takes over the reigns as head coach after spending 10 seasons as an assistant coach at a few stops, including two stints at Griswold. He said the Tigers are very excited to get to work for camp and the new season.

(Anita) — For Head Coach Barry Bower the 2022 football season was about surprising everyone given the low expectations they had. Key seniors had graduated, and CAM seemed to be written off. The Cougars ended up going 7-2 and made it to the second round of the playoffs, before losing to Lenox 34-14. Even without a state title, it was still a successful season in Coach Bower's eyes.

To build the identity it all starts with the expectations that Coach Bower and his staff have for their players. Not only on the field, but how they present themselves off of it as well. They are representations of their community at all times.

Encouraging the character of his players, Coach Bower instills a culture of love and respect. He emphasizes the respect they need to have for each other. Without that respect and love, they cannot be successful on the field.

The Cougars have some noteworthy offensive starters returning for the 23-24 season. Like Quarterback Chase Spieker who threw for over 1600 yards, had 26 TD's, 7 INTs, and a completion percentage of 65%. Leading rusher Austin Williams with 150 carries, 850 rushing yards, and 16 TD's. On the other side of the ball Jack Follmann is a player that stands out from the rest of the defense. Follman led the team in total tackles having 89 and solo tackles with 66.
Regardless of the returning talent and experience of playing in the Dome. Coach Bower is keeping his expectations on one game at a time. His main focus for the season is the Cougars first game.

Exira-EHK recently announced that Tony Santisteban will take over as head boys basketball coach from Doug Newton. Santisteban has been an assistant coach under Newton for the past 10 years and now gets to take over for the school he played for. He said it’s a bit of dream come true.

Newton leaves with a record of 335-194 during his tenure. He led the Spartans to a state tournament appearance in 2011, a team that Santisteban was a senior on. Santisteban played under Newton, graduating in 2011. He led the Spartans with 12 points and 3.2 rebounds per game during that state tournament season. Santisteban said he knows he has some big shoes to fill.

The Spartans are coming off a 19-5 season in 2022-23 that ended with a loss to West Harrison in the substate semifinals. Santisteban said he’s looking forward to summer league, camps, and just getting to work with the team.

Former Exira-EHK two-time State Champion and Grand View four-time NAIA National Champion wrestler Evan Hansen has been tabbed as the next head wrestling coach at AHSTW. Hansen has been coaching at the collegiate level since ending his illustrious career with the Grand View Vikings and he said he feels like moving to the high school level will suit him well.

After getting washed out by rain last year the Bruce Henderson Invitational was finally able to be ran after it was renamed to honor the legendary Atlantic coach last year. The hometown Trojans made the old coach leave with a big smile as they swept the team titles on the night and capped off the evening with wins by both the girls and boys 4x400M Relay teams.
On the girls side the Trojans ended up locking down the title after winning the 4x100M Relay and then put the exclamation point on in the 4x400M. Nicole Middents had a good start, Mariah Huffman kept the pace, Chloe Mullenix built a big lead in the third leg, and Ava Rush left no doubt as the Trojans easily outdistanced the field. Mullenix said they focus in well on that race.

Rush also won the 400M (1:00.08).
On the boys side in the 4x400M Relay Colton Rassmussen, Bennett Whetstone, and Caden Andersen all had strong legs and then Carter Pellett sprinted out extremely fast in the final leg to pass Glenwood and he had enough gas to close out the win. The Trojans had a team lead heading into the race but knew they needed to finish strong to secure the title. Pellett gave his thoughts on that anchor leg.

The Trojans also won the 4x800M Relay (Bennett Whetstone, Alex Sonntag, Tanner O’Brien, Caden Andersen (8:30.23) and the Shuttle Hurdle Relay (Jackson McLaren, Colton Rasmussen, Alex Keiser, Easton O’Brien 1:04.49). McLaren also went 2nd in the 110M Hurdles (15.63). Alex Keiser also had a big point gathering third place finish in the Discus.

Jason McCall has spent the past the past five years as an assistant coach for the AHSTW boys basketball team and now he is going to take over the head coaching role for the girls team. The AHSTW school board approved McCall’s hiring at their meeting on Wednesday night and McCall said hes anxious to meet with the girls and get to work. He felt like this was a great opportunity.

He started as a volunteer coach for a few sports and then latched on with GG Harris’ staff for boys hoops. He said being around the success the Vikings have had and learning from his colleagues made him feel prepared for this next step.

The Lady Vikes are coming off a nine win season last year but return a good number of players including four starters for the upcoming campaign. Atlantic alum and current Iowa Central runner Taylor McCreedy announced her decision earlier this week to continue her track, cross country, and academic career at Northwest Missouri State University next season. KJAN Sports caught up with Taylor to talk about her career at Iowa Central and the decision making process for the next step. Taylor has had a lot of success at Iowa Central, including helping the Tritons to a NJCAA Women’s Half Marathon National Championship this past fall. She said that was an awesome experience.

She narrowed her choices down to Northwest, SDSU, and UMKC. She said the acadmic side of things helped her narrow things down and then the visit to Northwest sold her.

The Atlantic tennis teams have some big participation numbers for 2023. Atlantic head coach Mike McDermott said 33 girls are out for the team this season and 20 are out for the boys team. Coach McDermott said it’s great to have that kind of interest but it has been a challenge in practice to get effective work in for everyone. He said they try to start from fundamentals and build up.

A familiar face will be donning the head coaches’ headset for Exira-EHK football in 2023. Former player and recent assistant coach Drew Buckholdt has been hired to lead the Spartans football program. The Exira-EHK school board approved his hire at their meeting this week.
Buckholdt played for Exira-EHK from 2013-2016 and went on to play college ball at Waldorf University. He has been an assistant on the Spartans staff the past few seasons and is excited to take over the head role.

Jim Field speaks with Ryan Archibald about a fundraising event this Saturday for the Jeff and Debbie Pope Family. The event will be held on Saturday, March 25th from 5-7pm at the Lewis Fire Station. They will have a pulled pork meal, silent auction, and live auction.

The Atlantic girls track and field team is excited for the 2023 season and has some lofty goals in sight. The Trojans are coming off a solid season last year with seven qualifiers for the State Meet and a 5th place finish in the Hawkeye Ten Conference Meet. The Trojans are hoping to take the next step this year and compete for a conference crown and take home some more medals at State. Atlantic head coach Matt Mullenix said they set a great standard last year.

The 4x400M Relay team that placed 4th at state last season are all back to try to improve on that placing and lead the team. The SWAT Valkyrie wrestling team gets to cap off their inaugural season with six wrestlers competing at the first ever sanctioned girls state wrestling tournament on Thursday and Friday in Coralville. Valkyrie head coach Tiffany South said it has been a very rewarding process getting the program going.

Chris Parks and Cass/Adair County Conservation Officer Grant Gelly talk about all things outdoors. Grant discusses some of the common mistakes he’s finding with early season deer hunters and some tips on proper procedure in the field. The show also contains talk about licensing requirements and the upcoming Cass County Christmas Bird Count on the 18th.
Easton Nelson’s layup in the final 20 seconds sent Exira-EHK to a double-overtime win over CAM 73-71 on Friday night in front of a packed house in Anita. The Spartans led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter but the Cougars clawed their way back in the second half.
The Spartans led 34-23 at halftime and the Cougars trimmed the lead to 4 at 44-40 by the end of the third. CAM got within 2 points five different times in the fourth quarter and finally tied it in the final seconds on a slicing layup by Seth Hensley. Tied at 57 the two teams traded blows in the extra session and combined to go 10-10 at the free throw line. The final two free throws in overtime were drained by Sam Foreman to tie the game at 63 and send it to another extra period. With the game square at 71 the Spartans ran a set that got Easton Nelson a great look on the left block that he banked in to put Sparty up 73-71. CAM had one last chance but a scramble for the ball after Chase Jahde hit the deck and tried to put up a shot from his knees let time run out. After the game Nelson talked about that final bucket.

This year’s show includes interviews with local survivor Arlene Drennan and Senior Community Development Coordinator for the American Cancer Society Suzie Mages. The show also contains a luminary tribute time in memory and honor of individuals affected by cancer in the area.

The Atlantic boys wrestling team is ready to hit the competition mats for a new season which starts with a triangular on Thursday at ADM. The Trojans have a talented and promising group from top to bottom and there seems to be good cohesiveness on the squad. It’s a big senior class this year and Atlantic head coach Tim Duff likes how that group is leading the way.

The Trojans had to end their sharing agreement with the CAM school district because enrollment numbers would have bumped them up a class. Girls wrestling is now sanctioned by the state and Atlantic girls are part of the newly formed S.W.A.T. Valkyries team. And the competition calendar has some big changes for this postseason.

Atlantic senior Ava Rush had a dream fulfilled this past weekend when she committed to continue her track career at the University of Iowa. Rush told KJAN sports that she knew she loved running from a young age and once she entered high school she knew continuing to run track in college was a dream she wanted to fulfill.

Rush has had success on the track and on the cross country course. She placed 9th in the Class 3A girls cross country meet last month and she has participated in multiple events at the state track meet the past two seasons. She said she likes both sports but track has always been her true love. She talked about the events that the staff wants her to run in at the next level.

The Riverside Bulldogs volleyball team had their season come to an end on Tuesday night with a 3-0 loss to Springville in the 1A State Quarterfinals. The top-seeded Orioles won 25-8, 25-8, 25-17 to advance to the semifinals on Wednesday. Riverside ends the year with their first ever trip to the state tournament.
The Orioles closed out the first set with 7 straight points and used a 9-point run early in the 2nd to control the match early. Riverside played better point for point with the Orioles in the third and the Lady Dawgs were within 16-13. The Orioles then put together five straight points to pull away and ultimately take the match.
Springville was led by a phenomenal night from senior Kennedy Breitfelder who finished with 14 kills and 6 digs. Ashlynne Zaruba had 14 digs and Nia Howard had 29 assists for the Orioles. Springville improved to 38-3 on the season and will play again in the Semifinals at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Riverside was led by 7 kills and 8 digs from senior Veronica Andrusyshyn. Fellow senior Mack Olmstead-Mitchell had 5 kills and a block. Sophia Taylor had 5 kills and 4 digs while Ayla Richardson set up 16 assists. The Lady Dawgs end their historic season with a record of 33-6.
Riverside senior Mack Olmstead-Mitchell was disappointed with the outcome but grateful for the experience.

Jim Field visits with Lee and Joanne Poeppe about their 52 year run as owners of the Redwood Steakhouse in Anita.
The Riverside Lady Dawgs won a 3-1 match over Gehlen Catholic in Denison on Wednesday night to advance to the state volleyball tournament for the first time in school history. Riverside won 25-19, 25-23, 14-25, 25-18.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a great start by controlling the action in the first set. Riverside's Sophia Taylor said their preparation set them up for that kind of early success.

The second set was a bit more wild. Gehlen Catholic ripped off a 10-point rally midway through to lead 18-10. Riverside didn't hang their heads and started chipping away at that lead. A five-point and 4-point run brought them all the way back to the lead at 23-22. Gehlen tied it at 23 but the Bulldogs scored the next two to complete the set comeback. Riverside Head Coach Brooke Flathers said that was a great momentum swing.

The third was controlled by Gehlen Catholic for most of the set but it didn't seem to phase the Lady Dawgs. Riverside scored the first two points of the fourth and then used a nine-point run to grab a strangle hold on the match building a 20-9 lead. The Jays didn't go away easily, using a six-point run to close the gap but Riverside eventually closed it out. Veronica Andrusyshyn had a monster night with 19 kills, 2 aces, 9 digs, and 1 block. The senior was thrilled to earn the trip to state.

Riverside has showed an ability to move past mistakes and focus on the next point during this postseason run. They battled through a fifth set and match point against Stanton in the regional semis and then didn't flinch when Gehlen had a big run in the second and won the third set in the final. Junior Elyssa Amdor said their mental approach has maybe been their biggest point of growth this season.

The CAM Cougars hit on enough big plays to outlast the Baxter Bolts 58-38 on Friday night in the first round of the 8-Player playoffs. The Cougars hit on long touchdown passes at the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to swing the game in their favor.
Baxter scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Cody Damman to Cael Shepley with just 24 seconds left in the first half to take a 30-18 lead. It seemed like a deflating moment for the Cougars but they let it fly when they got the ball back. Chase Spieker hooked up with Jack Follmann down the seem for 61-yards and touchdown with just 11 seconds left in he half. Austin Williams added the 2-point conversion and CAM was back within 4 at 30-26 at the break.
The Cougars got the ball to start the second half and hit another bomb on the first play of the half. Spieker connected with Sam Foreman down the right sideline for 65-yards and a score to give the Cougars their first lead of the night, 34-30 after the conversion. Baxter responded well with a 19-play drive that took nearly eight minutes off the game clock, capping it off with a 15 yard touchdown run from Cody Damman. They converted the two-point try and went up 38-34. CAM shut the Bolts out the rest of the way. Sam Foreman started to get consistent pressure in the Bolts' backfield and the tide turned to the Cougars. Follmann ripped off a 67-yard rushing score to put the Cougars back in front for good on the second play of the fourth quarter. Follmann added another rushing score and Sam Foreman hauled in a touchdown pass with 1:21 left to put a bow on a hard-fought win.
Jack Follmann had a monster game with 113 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns to go along with 98 yards receiving and another score. Chase Spieker had an efficient night at quarterback going 12-16 for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Sam Foreman had 177 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The Cougars improved to 7-2 on the season and will now await their 2nd round match-up.
Baxter was led by 32-48 passing for 350 yards and three touchdowns from Cody Damman. He also racked up 133 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground. He spent some time out of the game after taking multiple big hits in the third quarter but did come back in later in a gutty effort. The Bolts end their season at 7-2.

The Atlantic Trojans volleyball team put up a fight but ultimately couldn't keep pace with Class 3A #1 Des Moines Christian on Wednesday night. The Trojans well in a 3-0 sweep to the Lions in a Class 3A Region 3 Semifinal.
The Lions jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set and were able to hold the Trojans at arms length throughout the opener winning 25-18. Atlantic made it tough on the Lions in the 2nd by grabbing a 12-8 lead before the Lions roared back with 6 straight. The Trojans tied it back up at 14 but then DMC put together a 9-0 rally to grab the momentum and ultimately a 25-16 set win. The third went back and forth for the first ten points on each side but the Lions put together back to back 4-point rallies to grab control and put the match away with a 25-14 set win.
Atlantic head coach Michelle Blake was proud of the team's fight.

An impactful group of 8 seniors ended their careers with the loss and Coach Blake said they all were important to the growth of the program.

Atlantic alum Ryan Hawkins will get to try his hand at professional basketball this year. Following a standout college career at Northwest Missouri State and Creighton, Hawkins tells KJAN Sports that he is signing with the Toronto Raptors organization.
Hawkins is signing an Exhibit 10 contract with the Raptors that will put him on Toronto's G-League team Raptors 905, with the flexibility to convert the contract into a two-way deal with the NBA team.
Hawkins will be with the franchise for one-year on a minimum salary contract but will be eligible to earn a big bonus if he stays with the team's G-League affiliate for 60 days.
When asked about how it feels to get the chance to play professional basketball Hawkins said, "It still really hasn't hit me that this is a reality for me. Never really thought it would happen as a kid, it was always a dream but now that it's finally a reality for me, It still hasn't set in yet but I'm sure one of these days it will."
Ryan said he had constant communication from the Raptors and others so he was hopeful he was going to get a chance. He said it was good it came when it did though. "It's a really good thing that this contract worked out how it did and when it did because all of the European teams have already started their leagues and they are two, three, four weeks ahead of the NBA schedule. So the ship has already sailed on that opportunity so I would of had to find a real job had nothing happened out of this, so very thankful that it did."
The Raptors 905 squad opens their season on November 9th and they are scheduled for a visit to Des Moines to face the Iowa Wolves on Thursday, December 29th and 31st at Wells Fargo Arena making a possibility that he would play close to home this year.

The AHSTW Vikings closed off a perfect regular season on Friday with a 52-10 win at St. Albert. The Vikings struck early with a touchdown on their first possession and set the tone for the rest of the game. Luke Sternberg ripped off a 75-yard run on the Vikings first offensive play and three plays later the Vikes were in the endzone with a 4-yard pass from Kyle Sternberg to Nick Denning.
The Vikings would add a 62-yard touchdown run by Luke Sternberg and then Kyle Sternberg added two more touchdown throws for the Vikes, one to Ryan Wedemeyer and the other to Denning to lead 26-10 by half.
The Vikings continued to push that lead larger in the second half, ultimately winning 52-10.
AHSTW improves to 8-0 on the regular season and now awaits their playoff opponent. St. Albert ends the year at 2-6.

Jim Field visits with Shari Peterson, an Iowa native who wrote a book about her experience on United Flight 811 in February of 1989. A cargo door of the plane blew off leaving a large hole in the side of the plane while over the Pacific Ocean and, miraculously, the pilot was able to get the plane back to Hawaii. Nine people died in that disaster. Shari will present a program October 6th and 7th at the Corning Opera House and have copies of her book, "The View from 13F" available.

The CAM Cougars started hot out of the gate and rolled to a 42-8 Homecoming win over the Audubon Wheelers on Friday. Austin Williams ripped off a 53-yard touchdown run on the Cougars first offensive play to set the tone.
Audubon answered that early CAM touchdown with a 65-yard shovel pass for a score from Aaron Olsen to Manny Beisswenger. That would be the end of the Audubon offensive effort in the first half though. The Cougars took the lead back two possessions later on a 47-yard pass from Chase Spieker to Jack Follmann. Then the Cougar defense took control. Audubon didn't have a first down the entire half and lost yardage after that early touchdown play.
CAM led 28-8 by halftime and fully closed the door to start the second half. Jack Follmann ran for a 65-yard touchdown on the first play of the half to put CAM up 34-0. He would later add a 47-yard score to finish the scoring in the game.
Austin Williams finished with 132 yards and 2 touchdowns. Follmann had 132 yards and two scores on the ground and 57 yards receiving with two more scores. Chase Spieker finished 7 of 9 passing for 112 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Cougars improved to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in District 10.
Audubon falls to 2-4 on the season and 2-1 in District 10.

Audubon played a near perfect first half and grabbed a big 64-30 win over Exira-EHK on Friday night at Chis Jones Field. The two teams traded scores on the first four drives of the game, but then the Wheelers got some stops and kept punching scores in.
On Exira-EHK's third possession Izik Sorensen blocked a Spartan punt and set the Wheelers up at the 7 yard line. Two plays later the Wheelers scored to go up 24-14. They would force a turnover on downs for the Spartans the next possession. Manny Beisswenger then ripped off a 45-yard touchdown run. Aaron Olsen added two more touchdown runs before the half and the Wheelers led 44-14 at the break.
Olsen finished with 5 touchdown runs and 2 touchdown passes. Both of the passes were to tight end Edward Miller, the first was a 61-yard strike on their first offensive possession.
The Wheelers improved to 2-3 overall and 2-0 8-Player District 10. Next up the Wheelers have another big district battle at CAM. We'll have that game on KJAN.
Exira-EHK was led by two touchdown runs and one TD pass from Trey Petersen. The Spartans fall to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in District 10. Next up for Sparty is a trip to Bedford.

Chris Parks and Cass/Adair County Conservation Officer Grant Gelly talk about all things outdoors. This week they discuss a busy Labor Day weekend on the water, Teal and Dove season opening, Squirrel and Rabbit season opening, Pheasant numbers, and deer tag availability.
The St. Albert Falcons and Riverside Bulldogs played a doozy of a ballgame in Class A District 7 on Friday night in Oakland. Ultimately a couple of yards made the difference with St. Albert squeaking out a 30-28 win.
The two teams started slow but ramped up quickly. After three empty possessions to start the game the two teams traded 4 touchdowns in a span of 1:41 of game clock. Grady Jeppesen scored first for Riverside on a 14 yard run. Owen Marshall hit Brandon McCall for a 65 yard passing score for St. Albert. 1 play later Jeppesen hit Ayden Salias for a 75-yard scoring strike. Then 3 plays later Marshall hit Brendan Monahan for a 44 yard score. At that point it was 14-12 Falcons. Riverside scored on their next drive that lasted a bit longer. 13 plays and 65 yards later they scored with a Jaxon Gordon 1-yard plunge to make it 20-14 at half.
St. Albert took the lead back on their first drive of the second half after gaining possession on an interception by Monahan. He capped off the drive with a 3-yard rushing TD and the PAT by Kyle Irwin put St. Albert ahead 21-20. After forcing a Riverside punt they added a Marshall to Monahan 35 yard score to make it 27-20. Riverside didn't go away. They got a 40 yard rushing score from Jeppesen with 6:30 to play and got the 2-pt conversion to make it 28-27 Riverside.
St. Albert then mounted a drive down the field, converting a big fourth down to get into the red zone. On a 4th and goal from the 11 the Falcons decided to try a field goal. Kyle Irwin just barely squeaked it over the crossbar from 29-yards out to make it 30-28 Falcons with 1:19 to play. Riverside then gave themselves a great chance to win. They marched down the field 55 yards to the 10. Jeppesen had a 19-yard run to get to the ten with :06 left to play. Jeppesen then lobbed it up to the corner of the end zone for Aiden Bell but the Falcons knocked it away to preserve the win.
Grady Jeppesen was 10-18 passing for 212 yards and 1 touchdown and also ran for 94 yards and 2 scores. Ayden Salais hauled in 4 catches for 134 yards and 1 touchdown. The Bulldogs fall to 0-2 and will next up travel to 2-0 Mount Ayr.
St. Albert got a big line from Monahan with 2 receiving and 1 rushing touchdown to go along with an interception. The Falcons improve to 1-1. Next up for them is a tough home game against Underwood.

The Atlantic Trojans fought tough on the road against the Glenwood Rams on Friday night but ultimately fell 43-27. The Trojans had some great stretches of offensive play but a number of special teams mistakes throughout the game were costly. The Rams also hit on a number of big plays offensively to grab the win.
The game opened with some excitement as the Rams thought they ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown but the play was called back for a block in the back. The Trojan defense then came through with a couple of tackles for loss and got the ball back with an interception by Jackson McLaren. Atlantic then hit paydirt on their first offensive play with Caden Andersen hitting Colton Rasmussen for a 47 yard passing score. Glenwood would respond with a 12 yard touchdown pass from Kayden Anderson to Payton Longmeyer to tie the game up at 7. The Trojans were forced to punt on their next possession and the Rams hit it big two plays later. Tate Mayberry ripped off a 66-yard touchdown run to give the Rams a 14-7 lead, and they would hold that lead the rest of the way.
Atlantic got back within 7 on a 14-yard screen pass to Tanner O'Brien to make it 21-14. The Rams answered back again with a 57-yard strike from Anderson to Cody Krause. Atlantic then stalled on their next drive and had a punt blocked. The ball sailed back into the endzone and went out of bounds to produce a safety for the Rams. The teams then traded a couple of punts and a line drive punt from Carter Pellett was returned by Longmeyer to the Atlantic 9 yard line. The Rams cashed in on the next play with another TD run from Mayberry to make it 36-14 at half.
The second half was much quieter on the scoring front. Atlantic got to the one yard line on their second possession of the half, but a lost yardage play pushed them back and they failed to score. Their next possession ended with a Tanner O'Brien 2 yard score to get within 36-20. Again the Rams squashed that momentum though with a 65- yard hookup from Anderson to Krause to put the game out of reach. The Trojans scored once more on a 53-yard pass from Andersen to Rasmussen with 3:21 to play and that ended the scoring.
Atlantic opens up at 0-1 and will now prep for Kuemper Catholic at home next week. Glenwood moves to 1-1 on the season and will head to Indianola next week.

Dr. Matt Weresh shot a smooth and steady round of even par 69 on Sunday and grabbed his third Tournament of Champions title at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club on Sunday. Weresh went into the final day with a four shot lead and maintained a strong edge throughout most of the final day. Weresh finished the tournament with a 6-under par 201 total. Zach Christensen and last year's champion Ross Martens finished five shots back at 1-under 206 for the weekend.
Weresh adds the title to his wins in 2005 and 2020. His 201 total ties for the fifth best finish ever at the T of C. He also holds a tie for the third best finish with a 199 total in 2005.
Darby McLaren went to a playoff to win his first title at the Tournament of Champions in the Senior Division. McLaren and Bill Matzdorff both finished the weekend with a 1-over par 208 total. McLaren then birdied on the first playoff hole to win the title. Former champions Chris Nelson and Ron Peterson were two strokes back at +3 210 for the weekend.
The Super Senior Division was just a two day event this year and Rick Thompson grabbed his third straight title in that division. He shot a two day total of 1-under par 137 to grab the win. He opened with a phenomenal round of 65 on Friday. Past Champion John Willmore came in second with a +4 142.

Iowa Attorney General candidate Brenna Bird made a stop in Atlantic on the campaign trail on Wednesday. Bird is the current Guthrie County Attorney and has roots in Western Iowa.

Bird said she decided to run for Attorney General because she thinks she can do a better job and get a fresh face in a position that has been held by the same person since 1978. She said she has enjoyed helping Iowans as a prosecutor and believes supporting law enforcement should be a big priority for the Attorney General.

Class 1A and 2A Sectional Wrestling Meets will be held around the state on Saturday. The 1st and 2nd place winners in each weight class from Sectionals advance to District meets next Saturday.
In 2A Atlantic/CAM will head to Sectional 3 at Central Decatur high school in Leon to square off with Central Decatur, Clarinda, Clarke, Creston, and Shenandoah. Sectional 4 at Harlan will feature Carroll, Glenwood, Greene County, Harlan, Red Oak, and Southwest Iowa (Sidney). Qualifiers out of these two sectionals will advance the the District 2 meet at Glenwood.
In Class 1A area teams will be in Sectional 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, and 16. Sectional 9 at I-35 will include Nodaway Valley, Sectional 10 at Ogden will include Panorama.
Sectional 11 at AHSTW will include AHSTW, Audubon, Coon Rapids-Bayard, St. Albert, Treynor, Tri-Center, and Underwood. Sectional 12 at Riverside will feature ACGC, Bedford-Lenox, East Mills, East Union, Griswold, Riverside, Southwest Valley, and West Central Valley. Qualifiers from these two sites will advance to District 6 at Underwood.
Sectional 15 @ MVAOCOU includes Kuemper Catholic, Logan-Magnolia, Missouri Valley, MVAOCOU, South Central Calhoun, West Harrison, and Woodbine. Sectional 16 @ Woodbury Central includes West Monona, Westwood, Woodbury Central, Manson NW Webster, Lawton-Bronson, Hinton, East Sac County, and Alta-Aurelia. Qualifiers from these two sites will advance to District 8 at West Monona.
Action for all sectional meets get underway at Noon on Saturday. District meets on the 12th will start at 11:00 a.m.
