Susan is the youngest National President of Women in Insurance & Financial Services in the over 80 year history of the organization, a “4 Under 40” by Advisor Today, and one of the “Women of Influence” by New York Business Journal.

She’s also the founder of Pancakes For Roger Inc.,a not-for-profit corporation that unites veterans with opportunities to help address the unique challenges they face during and after their service…and she does that by asking folks to enjoy a simple pleasure in life…eating pancakes.

Here’s the backstory: Susan was extraordinarily close with her father, Major General Roger Combs, a Vietnam War veteran who was diagnosed with throat cancer due to Agent Orange exposure, and had to be put on a feeding tube.

One fateful morning, Roger expressed a simple wish:he wanted to have pancakes for breakfast, but couldn’t, due to his physical condition and limitations.

After having a pancake breakfast with her family in her father’s memory, Susan decided that she would create a movement to honor and give back to the brave men and women that serve their country.

It started with a grassroots effort. Then it became a best-selling book. Now it’s a global endeavor that’s making a big difference.

For every pancake picture posted or tagged on social media with the hashtag #PancakesForRoger, Susan’s non-profit makes a donation in Major General Combs’ name to the Veterans Clinic at the University of Missouri in his hometown.

Meet Erika and Monica, sisters who started Season2Consign, an online consignment boutique. These sisters embody the spirit of adaptability and determination needed to thrive in business, and present an incredible story of female entrepreneurship.

The sisters possess over 15 years of experience in the luxury handbag resale sector. Seeing an unmet need in the secondhand luxury market, the brand was founded amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, where they noticed the struggles of small retailers unable to adapt to the changing landscape.

They started Season 2 Consign with an aspiration to change the face of luxury retail by making it more exclusive, while empowering and involving other women.

After beginning to franchise in 2022, the brand now stands as the world’s first and only franchise opportunity of its kind, led by an all-female team. They’ve seen incredible demand for their services, opening 4 locations in their first year of franchising, and have no plans to slow down.

  1. Self Promotion = Career Planning
  2. “Know the book on you” through understanding the feedback you get from others. Listen with curiosity when receiving feedback and learn how to ask “feed forward” or powerful questions when asking for feedback like, “What do you hope I’ll do? And What do you fear I’ll do?”
  3. We are our own toughest critics; knowing your inner critics “greatest hits” will help you to overcome your inner antagonist and elevate your inner protagonist.
  4. Courage precedes confidence. Practice the small behaviors in the moments that scare you. Surviving these little moments will build your confidence over time.

Did you grow up with the word perfect a predominant word in your vocabulary? I did! What I found out later in life is that the goal of perfection can stop you from taking any action. You might ask yourself, “If I can’t do it perfectly, is it even worth doing?” The answer, yes!

Top 4 Takeaways?

  1. 3, 2, 1…GO! Count yourself in and start, your momentum will keep you going!
  2. Make it messy. Just go for it. Just do it. Perfection does not come on day one.
  3. Remember when you were a kid and you just got to try? Go for that mindset. Have fun, make mistakes, and learn.

Top 4 Takeaways

  1. Early in our careers we were trying to blend in. We wanted to be considered one of the guys. Now I understand that different is better, it gives perspective and variety. Imagine if the world was all the same! How boring would that be.
  2. A lot of people can sympathize but not a lot of people can empathize.
  3. There is no such thing as balance. I don’t do anything at 50% in life so if I am only giving half, everything is falling apart. Give 100% of your focus to the thing you need to focus on.
  4. You are exactly where you are meant to be.

  • Be yourself because everyone else is taken.
  • Be secure enough to hire smarter people than you.
  • If you are not at the dinner table, you are the main entree.
  • Discipline yourself so that no one else has to.
  • Be confident enough to apply for anything.

Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. Believe in yourself. There are enough naysayers in the world you don’t have to add your voice to the list.
  2. Know your own worth. Every time you say yes to something you say no to something else so be choiceful about when you compromise if you have to compromise at all.
  3. No one else knows what they are doing either. Find your voice and project confidence. Knowing everything is not a prerequisite to finding success. Put the work in, do your research, and advocate for your ideas.
  4. To be successful you’ve got to have tenacity, ambition, action, creativity, and trust. If you reach your goal too soon you probably didn’t set the goal high enough.

Brooke Ellenberger is the Vice President of ticketing at the Tennessee Titans. She’s a sales leader, hiring manager, and career coach inside her role at the Titans. She’s worked for the Saints, Astros, and Titans which has allowed her to build her sales skill across two of the big four.

Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. To level-up, it is essential to find your outlet for stress relief!
  2. When hiring employees, ask consistent questions that support the company culture. Start out with questions like, “What’s your biggest pet peeve?” and “What do your friends make fun of you for?” to break the ice and learn more about the individual on a personal level.
  3. When managing employees, create clear outcomes but leave room for them to create their own success. Explain A & Z and let them come up with how to get from A to Z.
  4. The three keys to success in ticket sales are confidence, persistence, and charisma.

Katie Woods, Tournament Director - NBC World Series | Marketing Director - Wichita Sports Commission

Minor League Baseball (MiLB) Named league’s Woman Executive of the Year in 2019 (California League), 2015 & 2013 (Northwest League)

Creative & passionate sports executive with more than a decade of leadership experience in Minor League Baseball. Specializing in business operations, fan experience, digital marketing, corporate partnerships, communications, and project management for successful franchises across the country.

Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. It’s important for leaders (both men and women) to elevate their staff and put them in positions to grow and be successful. Katie’s GM in Everett gave her opportunities to network and grow - Winter Meetings, Promo Seminar, community connections, sales trainings etc., and also advocated for her when she was pregnant with her first daughter at a team without an existing maternity leave policy. Use this as an example of how to advocate for staff when you are in a leadership position.
  2. Be prepared for a challenge. Decisions about life and career, and being prepared for things to always be changing, even when you're settled into what you think is your 'dream job'.
  3. It's not personal. Step back and see the other person's perspective is a valuable skill, versus taking a lack of response/a negative response/a lack of support as a personal slight.
  4. Networking and asking for help and expertise. Some of the best connections and friends in the industry have been from essentially cold calling them because they are doing something great. Have the desire to want to learn from them. Be curious.

Quote: “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!” Hunter S Thompson

REVELxp says that the EXPERIENCE around game day has fractured. How can fans rediscover their PASSION for in-person attendance at games and events? Who will make every EVERY MOMENT more momentous? REVELxp is ready to reignite, reimagine and redefine game day.

Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. Push yourself to get uncomfortable and do the things you don’t want to do. It’s outside your comfort zone where growth happens!
  2. When it comes to sales in today’s marketplace, get creative, get curious, and practice resilience. Ask yourself, how are you reaching them in the way they want to be reached?
  3. Opportunity must exist around you to be promoted. Where are there gaps that you can help fill? Build your presence through working in the gaps.
  4. Be able to take feedback and coaching. Worst case scenario is that 5% of feedback is true which means there is a takeaway for self-improvement from all feedback.

Songs: Boss Bitch by Doja Cat and “The Show Must Go On” by the one and only

Quote: “Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and thinkers, but most of all, surround yourself with those who see the greatness within you, even when you don’t see it yourself.”

Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. Push yourself further when you think that “good” is “good enough”.
  2. In Michelle’s words, “If you avoid dealing with things for three years it is very bad for your mental health.” Michelle consequently took a month off from work and will make herself available if you’d like to reach out on this topic! Check the show notes for her info.
  3. Read as much as you possibly can to understand the different types of people you might be working with. This will make you a better manager. Try the book “surrounded by idiots”
  4. Consider a professional development worksheet for your direct reports to assess their strengths, weaknesses, and where they want to grow. Use the formula 70/20/10 where 70% is on the job, 20% is through a coach or mentor, and 10% is through formal education.

Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. Follow the advice of Sheryl Sandberg, when you get a chance to board the rocket ship, don’t ask what seat. The position you are first offered might not be perfect but it’s an in. Take it, do your best, and promote from within.
  2. When building, always start with the structure. Don’t get so busy being busy that you have a bias toward action.
  3. Have a third party hold you accountable.
  4. Ask yourself this, are you a transparent and fair boss? The litmus test is if you are holding a meeting after the meeting!

Quote: Jess Sims, “How you do anything is how you do everything.”

Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. The world is much bigger than yourself. You must step out of that vantage point from time to time and see the bigger picture!
  2. Hire a diverse employee set that looks like your fans.
  3. Make sure your loved ones understand your career and the demand.
  4. Hard work pays off and there are no shortcuts. But be cognizant of the difference between hard work and overwork. Make sure you are taking care of yourself!

Paige feels like sometimes things get dumped on the single people because they have less responsibilites at home and Emily feels that if we all communicated better each person's responsibilities outside the workplace could be met with greater ease. Kayla Pennington has spent the last 14 years in HealthCare Technology sales overseeing the relationship with the world’s largest HealthCare Management Company, being the first female and youngest to take on the position. In her role, she led the full strategy for expansion and execution of enterprise software solutions to improve clinical and financial outcomes across healthcare organizations.

However, in June 2021, she decided to walk away from the hamster wheel of climbing the corporate ladder to take a year long sabbatical. Kayla has since traveled to multiple countries and is working on finishing all 50 states here in the U.S.

Today’s conversation with Kayla is so inspiring; she knew when it was time to take a breather from her career and she shares that journey with us. Instead of saying “soon” she said “now” and left her job. She took the time off to travel now instead of waiting; something she’s always had a passion for. Her story is one of living her life, trusting her capabilities, and knowing her self worth.

She’s on another path to success in her career. It came quickly when she was recharged and ready to succeed.

Noël Mirhadi is an agent in the Music division of UTA, a leading global talent and entertainment company. In this role, Mirhadi focuses on booking artists into all venue types including performing arts centers, clubs, theaters, amphitheaters, and festivals.

Noel attended college at Syracuse, moved to NY, started as a receptionist and is now in LA working for United Talent Agency in her dream role. If you listen closely, Noel tells us how she did it. Two words: laser focus.

About UTA

Leading global talent, entertainment, and sports company UTA represents many of the most acclaimed figures across film, television, news, music, sports, speakers, theater, fine art, literature, video games, podcasts and other social and digital content. A passionate advocate for artists, creators and innovators, the company also is recognized in the areas of film finance and packaging, branding, licensing and endorsements. UTA is known for its dedicated digital media group helping clients—from A-list talent to Fortune 500 companies—capitalize on a rapidly changing entertainment, media and business landscape. The agency's worldwide presence includes its Los Angeles headquarters and offices in New York, London, Nashville, and Atlanta.

“Rarely are opportunities presented to you in a perfect way. In a nice little box with a yellow bow on top. ‘Here, open it, it’s perfect. You’ll love it.’ Opportunities – the good ones – are messy, confusing and hard to recognize. They’re risky. They challenge you.”

After graduating from Brown University, I knew working in the sports industry would be a fulfilling way to connect my passion for sports with professional relationship development. Having previous experience with the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers in their premium sales departments, I moved back to my home town to join the Minnesota Vikings New Stadium project through Van Wagner Sports and Entertainment. Prior to the opening of U.S. Bank Stadium, I joined our Corporate Partnerships sales team and have now transitioned into a role leading our Premium Sales team. After working and living throughout the country, I’m proud to be a member of the Minnesota Vikings franchise.

In this episode Paige and Emily discuss how to take credit for the work you have done. Spoiler alert, it does not mean you are a bad leader if you take credit for your work. Often times we share the credit or give it all away to our team (which is awesome and admirable!) but you also have to be able to tell the story of your accomplishments in the work place if you want to get ahead. We discuss tools to effectively take credit as well as pitfalls of giving it all away too often. Listen in and learn how to take credit for all your hard work!

The theme continues to persist, CONFIDENCE has carried successful women to new heights. Today’s interview with Nicki Jones, former D1 and pro basketball player turned college broadcaster a sideline reporter shows that CONFIDENCE and success have the strongest of ties.

Nicki is from Rochester, NY and credits the strong women in her life for her confidence. Her great grandmother still refuses help to tend to her home because she can do it herself! Her mom turned her on to the book The Alchemist, that has given her one example after another that if you set your mind to and give it your all, it will work out. Nicki has been blessed that these powerful women have influenced her life and let one interest after another come to her with an ease, and confidence, and a method to learn and grow through acquiring a new skill.

Nicki talks us through these themes today; her multifaceted approach to life, her confidence, her self image and realizing her worth. Oh, and she’ll also talk about how she amassed over 250 thousand followers on ticktock detailing the journey of her bus renovation. Ask and you shall receive. Let’s go!

Tami Powers is the Founder of Power Drive Motor Sport Futures.

Tami looked around the globe and apart from the NHRA, there are ZERO women competing full-time in IndyCar, ZERO in The NASCAR Cup Series, and ZERO in F1. She dug in, and what extensive research revealed was compelling. Women and men are equal in a race car, however, women are 10 years behind in experience (opportunity). Tami then discovered a generation of skilled female race car drivers around the world with little opportunity to reach the top and a number of unnecessary obstacles holding them back. While motorsport is an equal sport it is not inclusive.

With this past year of endless research and countless zoom meetings, Tami felt a sense of urgency to create essential solutions. The data shows us clearly; normalizing women competing with men is good for business. It’s also a necessary component in sustaining the health of motorsport as a whole.  It’s time…

PowerDrive, Tami’s company, is where this all comes together.

Jaclyn Hawkins, CEO of Women’s Hockey Life. When Jaclyn does something she goes ALL IN and currently navigates building a women’s hockey empire while raising toddler twins in Ottawa, Ontario.

The idea for Women’s Hockey Life began over a slice of pizza in Switzerland—where Jaclyn decided how she’d stay involved in women’s hockey after retiring from a successful playing career with the University of Connecticut Huskies in the NCAA D1, Boston Blades of the CWHL, ZSC Lions in Switzerland, and even a stint with Hockey Canada, as well as an accomplished coaching career.

Fast forward 10+ years and Jaclyn has created and runs the leading women’s hockey website and community, along with multiple branches under WHL, to help give other women the opportunities she had (without the mistakes she made). She also runs an eight week online course to help high school girls navigate the college recruiting process.

Women’s Hockey Life (WHL) focuses on highlighting, promoting and supporting women’s hockey around the world at every level. From youth and university hockey, to the pros and the beer league heroes—they cover it all.

On today’s episode of Leadership is Female, #20!!! can you believe it!?! I am so pleased to bring you Lisa Motley, a veteran of casino, hotel, sports, and special events advertising and marketing, currently holds the position of Director of Sports Marketing and Special Events for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA).

Lisa Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. Chase the skills required to grow, not the money, the money will come when you add the skills. Lisa’s career started out with a faxed resume and now she is leading marketing sports and special events for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, one of the top tourist destinations on the planet. Lisa’s marketing knowledge had to grow tremendously over the years to take on big roles like this one - chase the skills!

  2. To build courage, consider creating a photo album on your phone title “Courage” and fill it with all your favorite photos that bring you JOY! A night out with your friends, a great vacation, your family...you name it. Any time you start to feel weak, open that up and reflect on the beautiful life you have created and let those happy memories fill you with the courage needed to get the job done.

  3. On goal setting, choose goals that align with your values and that you are passionate about achieving. Setting a goal on an area where you have disinterest is not going to take you anywhere. Get excited about what you can achieve and make a plan on how to get there. Shout out to Lisa who met her reading goal - 52 books in 2020!! WOW!

  4. Lisa’s best advice for women, “make a decision!” Don’t make a million dollar decision but make a decision and be able to explain why you made that decision. Start getting decision making practice today to be the leader you want to be tomorrow.

If you push the status quo, raise your hand, and take the chance, what could you do? Patricia Arty, Director of Strategic Partnerships for the US Soccer Foundation discussed all of this and more on today’s podcast including why she is pursuing her MBA and her role in strategy and execution of national partnerships for the US Soccer Foundation.

Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. Ask yourself, is your current employment allowing you to still learn? Are you still growing? These are the two questions to consider when thinking about moving on from an organization.

  2. Commit your time. In life, you have multiple teams that you belong to. How can you work together with your teammates for collaboration? Don’t be afraid to ask for help or to divide up the work.

  3. Be clear with leadership about what YOU want. If there is an area you are looking to grow and that sector is available at the company, make it known. Raise your hand to assist that area to get experience and put action against your curiosity.

  4. Have an open mind. There are lots of ways to work in sports, not just team side. Think about apparel, Foundations, or even corporate initiatives. Pick your head and eyes up and be open to opportunity.

Allison Eddy Sollazzo is a sports and entertainment business executive specializing in corporate partnerships, integrated media, and fan engagement. She has spent her career launching new initiatives in the front office of the Miami Dolphins, San Diego Padres, and currently, the National Hockey League as the Director of Club Business Development. Allison works directly with the teams on generating partnership revenue, forecasting and implementing new leaguewide revenue initiatives, and sharing Partnerships insights across the league. She is a proud University of Wisconsin Alum and lives with her husband in Manhattan. Since she is originally from the state of hockey, she still finds time to lace up the skates!

Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. Sometimes you take a Greyhound bus to an interview while on vacation with your friends and change into your new suit in a Starbucks bathroom. If you are willing to take the opportunity when it presents itself - which is usually on your employer’s time, not yours - the doors of your career will open real wide.

  2. Put the work into the actual interview. Take your interview to the next level by putting in the hard work to get the job. Be prepared to show people that areas in your resume that may be perceived as your gaps are things you can learn or that you have already taught yourself.

  3. Be more direct. Don’t expend your mental and physical energy working around an issue or uncomfortable conversation. Get right to it, close the topic, end a meeting on time, and get on with your priorities.

  4. Be concise. Be bold. Believe in yourself and Be human.

The Reno Aces are the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Reno 1868 FC is part of the United Soccer League and the USL affiliate of the MLS San Jose Earthquakes. Samantha Hicks is responsible for driving revenue streams for both properties. Bringing over 13 years’ experience in the sports industry, she currently oversees the Sponsorship and Ticket Sales departments for both clubs. She was entering her 5th season with the clubs when the COVID 19 Global Pandemic hit. She has adapted her leadership to run revenue save campaigns for both sports. Making sure Sponsors and Season Members rollover their commitment to 2021 and beyond despite the current state of the Sports Industry having zero fans in stadium. Hicks has spearheaded sales strategy centered around driving millions of dollars year over year to keep the business thriving in downtown Reno.

She is passionate about exceeding goals and helping people grow in their career.

Previously, she worked for NBA/WNBA franchises in the Indiana Pacers & Fever and the Detroit Pistons & Shock. She has been part of two WNBA Championships. Hicks spearheaded the Sellout WNBA Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in October 2012.

Samantha has lived in Northern Nevada for five years. She loves spending time with her family and visiting Lake Tahoe. When she is not behind Microsoft Teams in this remote setting you can catch her walking her Dog Duncan and attempting to cook!

Top 4 Takeaways.

  1. At the start of your career, find a few people you look up to in the company and just observe them. What is their body language, how are they dressing, how do they run a meeting, and how are they interacting with people? You can learn so much just through observation.
  2. Set goals for yourself. You don’t have to tell anyone but it’s so important that you set goals for yourself. Silent pursuance is OK, just be clear and honest with what YOU want to achieve.
  3. Developing as a leader is a process, we learn through experience and we don’t always get it right. For Samantha, being her true, authentic self has been the key to her success. The more she has showed her staff who she is, the more they have showed her who they are and showed up better for the job.
  4. You have to be prepared and ready for your people. It’s a sign of respect to be prepared for the meeting. Use the 15 reminder on Outlook and your phone as a tool to get into the mindset of your meeting. To be extra prepared, review your schedule the night before or in the morning so you know what you signed up for that day.

On episode 10 of the Leadership is Female podcast I interview Nancy Hensley, a c-suite executive who has worked for IBM and is now Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Stats Perform, a global sports tech company with over 2,000 employees. This episode is all about LEADERSHIP. A favorite topic of the podcast and Nancy really brings more depth and real business examples of how to put your leadership skill to work and where you might look to grow.

Check out Stats Perform at https://www.statsperform.com/ and Nancy at https://www.linkedin.com/in/nancyhensley/

Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. Know what you bring to the table. Think about your strengths, not your limitations.

  2. The right partner means everything when you are trying to reach the next level as a woman. We often feel like we have to be the ones to do it all when it comes to home life or we don’t ask or we don’t have the right partner so that we can succeed. Have a partner who supports, listens, and understands your career goals so you can achieve your dreams.

  3. As a leader, manage to the outcome you want your team to achieve. You don’t need to know it all or be the subject matter expert. This is a big shift from a “doer” role to a “leader” role. As a leader, you have to figure out a way to enable the people who work for you to be successful in their specific areas of expertise to achieve the company’s goals.

  4. Work for people who understand your talents and support you. Overtime, working in the wrong environment can degrade your self confidence. If your boss does not support you, you have to get out and move on so that you can flourish under the right leadership.

As President and CMO of FanCompass, a San Francisco-based sports technology company, Lisa Fahey is a strategic leader who brings classic experience in consumer packaged goods to the business of sport. In addition to rebranding FanCompass in 2016 and driving the company’s international growth and expansion, Lisa became President of the organization in 2018. Prior to FanCompass, Lisa held leadership roles with Kraft Foods, Pepsico and pre-acquisition growth company Annie’s. She has extensive background building brands to drive profitable growth and has led FanCompass to expand its product offering and increase its premier roster of professional clubs including Liverpool FC, the Cleveland Browns, Syracuse University and most recently the league-level relationships with MiLB and MLB . A graduate of Indiana University, Bloomington, Lisa received an M.B.A. from the D’Amore McKim School of Business at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts.

Top 4 Takeaways:

  1. Lisa’s career started after she got her MBA. The MBA curriculum differed dramatically from undergrad. She went from learning about a topic to diving into the deep end of research and business practices. Hyper focused to teach critical thinking skills. For Lisa, an MBA was the key to moving into the career she wanted.
  2. Your career is a stack of building blocks. Each block represents a skill acquired or a project completed. Look at your role and ask yourself, which building blocks will I acquire from this position. Work on the blocks, name the blocks, and promote your blocks. A boss or leader can put you in the right role but no one can guide your career as much as you.
  3. On balancing family and career, Lisa took a break from the work force to focus on her family and successfully re entered the workforce at the same level. You can too. Don’t focus on the gap. Focus on what you contributed in the past and what you can bring in the future.
  4. On how to level up, be true to yourself, be authentic, and take ownership and all you have done. Where do the dots of the best accomplishments of your career align? Hone in on those areas and take them to the next level.

Britt Larsen, Career Coach & Creator of Livlyhood, a community for women who work, is a champion of women in the workplace. She hosts the Livlyhood podcast to celebrate working women and to help them find joy in their jobs. Her extensive career in public affairs prepared her to now guide working women to figure out how to get what they want and need from their careers. Britt’s Top 4 Takeaways

Confidence. Look around you and see what you admire about what other people are posting, what do you like about what they are saying or how they are promoting themselves. Bottom line, you have to fight for yourself. Certainly cheer for others but don’t forget to promote your role and your accomplishments.

On promotion, take your job description and rewrite it for the job you want or the job you are actually doing.  What does my boss need? What do they value? What is really important to the company and my manager? How can I contribute to that goal? Then, how can you attach value?

When do you make the case to your supervisor for promotion?  Don’t wait until something bad happens like a colleague gets a promotion or you are assigned a really big project beyond the scope of your job. You never want to ask under the pretense of reaction. When you know it’s time: Present the facts.

Gain confidence. How? Work to break out of your shell by sharing your story. It’s uncomfortable at first so you have to get the reps, and just start. It will get easier! Craft your story. What’s your story? “People enjoy working with me!” or “I am a phenomenal sales person” or “I am resourceful and always come in under budget”. Own your story with confidence and start sharing!

On today’s Podcast we speak with Rachel Luba, MLB player agent who’s responsible for the negotiation of the historic Trevor Bauer contract. Among arbitration-eligible players, Trevor became the second-highest-paid starting pitcher in history. Rachel was the first woman who negotiated a contract for a player on the 25-man roster. After signing her first client, Trevor Bauer, following the 2019 season, Luba Sports was born. It exists to offer clients hyper-personalized and customizable representation packages and to revitalize a stagnant industry. From her time spent in the ring boxing larger opponents to her fight to break into the baseball industry, Rachel has always embraced the roll of underdog and considers herself a fighter. In addition to helping players maximize their career earnings, she hopes to inspire future generations of women and underdogs to fight for their goals, no matter the odds. Rachel is a dynamo. She’ll share with us that time and time again, she did not take no for an answer. When faced with a crossroads, quit or face confrontation and do the work, she took the challenge to face confrontation and do the work. She’s an example that hard work and determination does indeed pay off.  Also, listen to how often she has used negotiation to propel her career forward. She’s got some tips for you and it's a great reminder that if we can sharpen our negotiation skills it's a huge benefit and can put you in the fast lane to career growth. Rachel's Quote The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want and if they can’t find them, MAKE THEM. Rachel's Top 4 Takeaways Home Run interview with Rachel Luba, MLBPA Certified Player-Agent at Luba Sports, LLC. After hearing from Rachel I think it is evident that her favorite quote, “The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want and if they can’t find them, MAKE THEM.” Is abundantly true in Rachel’s life. Take some advice, get out there and MAKE it happen! With that, let’s get into the top 4 takeaways from Rachel Luba.

Seek out and talk to people who are in the industry you want to be a part of. Be curious. Ask questions. Be passionate.

Do your research, have a specific goal in mind and choose the road that is the most direct path to achieving that goal like Rachel did when she selected the right law school.

Be a great listener, soak up knowledge and listen but don’t be afraid to contribute. Use your voice! If you have a seat at the table, you have done the work and your opinion matters too. Speak up in meetings and share your thoughts.

If they can do it, you can do it. Build your confidence. Be bold. Put yourself out there. You can do it! There is a way! If people don’t want to give you the chance, do it yourself. Then, compete against them. Is that powerful or what?

Their partnership roster includes Coke, PepsiCo, Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors, Avis, Panama Jack, American Express, MasterCard, just to name a few. Brette's Top 4:

  1. When you head in for an interview, do all the research on the company that you can and be prepared to articulate where YOUR strengths fit in.
  2. Create two metaphorical boxes, one for people who support you and one for people who don’t. When you feel the naysayers creep in, just put them in the “Don’t Support Me” box.
  3. Don’t be afraid to make a change. For Brette, changes can be made for two main reasons, first, sometimes you have to move on to move up. Meaning, getting the experience you need to grow sometimes does not come from your current employer so keep your eyes open and your mind open to expansion and change, and second, if you no longer align with your company, meaning that you can no longer be “True to YOUR Brand” it's time to go. Don’t ever sacrifice what you stand for for your job.
  4. Some things don’t change. Come in early and stay late. Check with your boss before you leave work. These behaviors will help you to stand out and show your organization you are willing to go the extra mile.

Rae holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Florida where her focus was on Journalism and Telecommunication with an area of concentration in Public Relations, Travel and Tourism. She is also fluent in Spanish.

Rae's 4 Key Points are:

  1. On management and being the best manager you can be, be patient, listen, be authentic and true. Learn from your best and worst examples. Learn the qualities that will help you to serve your team the best.
  2. On leadership, trust your team to “get it done” and make the decision to do the work and get the job done together.
  3. Build relationships. This is the most important thing that you can do in your career. Never underestimate the power of networking.
  4. Imposter syndrome is real. The single biggest hurdle in Rae’s career was overcoming the fear of failure. Once that was identified, Rae could stand up to failure, look it in the face, and accept the challenge. Raising your had to say, “I’ll take a stab at that”. That’s when you will win!

Jenna Byrnes, the Senior Vice President of the Oklahoma City Dodgers, is dedicated to leading the revenue generating efforts of the organization with emphasis in Ticket Sales, Marketing and Special Events.

Byrnes focuses on leadership and professional development for the 50 full-time members of the organization with a focus on internal communication and company culture. She serves as a resource for other industry executives and was recognized as the 2013 and 2015 Pacific Coast League Female Executive of the Year.

She offers incredible insight including these Top 4 Key Points:

  1. To succeed in sales, you must have fun and be authentic. Show up every day to be the best you can be. The best qualities in a sales person are a positive attitude and curiosity.

  2. As a leader, interview tough. You only get one chance to interview and if you are really serious about adding this person to your team, ask the tough questions. Get a feel for their personality and if they’d be a good fit with your organization. You can never go back and ask those hard questions – so don’t be afraid to interview tough!

  3. When announcing her maternity leave, Jenna put herself in the shoes of her staff. What would they want to know? “How would this affect me?” So, Jenna prepared the plan and had confidence in working the plan. Jenna even included bonus opportunities for staff performance while she was out.

  4. No one can care more about your career path than you. The best way to predict your future is to create it. How do you do that? Jenna suggests that you think about what you want and make the role for yourself, meaning write your own job description. Use that description as a goal and work toward that next level. Then make the case, pitch your plan. Make it happen for yourself because no one can care more about your career path than you.

Anne Marbarger is the Executive Director of Padres Pedal the Cause San Diego, an organization committed to accelerating cures for cancer by funding collaborative cancer research in San Diego. Anne talks about her non-linear path to leading a hugely successful sports adjacent non-profit. Prior to joining Pedal the Cause, Anne worked in management consulting for four years in Washington, DC, within Deloitte Consulting’s federal human capital practice. She also served as an intelligence analyst at the United States Treasury Department for four years where she focused on a major Middle East terrorist organization’s illicit funding sources and use of the US financial system. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Government from Dartmouth College and an MBA from George Washington University.

Listen closely as Anne outlines exactly how to earn a raise and juggle a demanding job with young children. This is an interview you won't want to miss!

  1. Keep in touch. Keep in contact with the people who know you and have the opportunity to open doors for you. Reach out when you DON’T need anything.
  2. Create the opportunity and make the decision to leave the known for the unknown. It’s worth it to pursue your passions.
  3. The biggest hurdle is often times yourself. Confidence, clarity, and conviction will give you the courage to ask for what you deserve. When pursuing a raise do the research, outline a proposal, push to make the ask and go for it!
  4. Instead of comparing yourself to others, compare yourself to yourself. How far have you personally come? How have you personally grown. Instead of looking externally, look inward.

Belicia Montgomery, Director of Diversity and Inclusion at the Minor League Baseball league office.

Belicia Montgomery began her professional sports career at Minor League Baseball in 2016 as a Marketing Research and Strategy resident and was hired full-time as an Analytics Specialist in 2017. She was promoted to Manager of Data and Business Processes in 2018 before transitioning into the diversity & inclusion department in 2019. Prior to joining MiLB, Montgomery held marketing roles at USF Athletics and H&R Block. Belicia received a Bachelor of Science in marketing with a minor in accounting from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and obtained both her Master of Business Administration and Master of Sport and Entertainment Management from the University of South Florida. Belicia is a native of Birmingham, Alabama, and currently resides in St. Petersburg, Florida.

  • Contact Belicia! beliciakathryn@gmail.com
  • Or connect here https://www.linkedin.com/in/beliciam/

Here are Belicia’s Four key points:

  1. Get comfortable being uncomfortable and EXTEND your comfort zone. This act will lead to greater opportunity. Ask yourself if you can achieve your dreams without extending what you are capable of?
  2. Build relationships so that when a new opportunity arises, you are first person who is considered for the role. Do this by asking where you can help and proclaiming where your skill set can be beneficial.
  3. Don’t believe everything that is said about you; listening to the advice or criticism of others is not always to your benefit. Meaning, don’t carry that critique around with you and turn it into negative self-talk. Evaluate where you can improve, do the work, and let go what’s not serving you. Overcoming that challenge and creating positive self-talk will create a better version of you!
  4. First impressions are vital. You only get one chance to make a first impression – make it count.
