This week we offer a break from harsh reality by focusing on Nick's and Joe's recent trip to the UK. We all need a little distraction from the insanity that we are living in. We hope we can provide a momentary respite from your fears, disappointment and grief. As the great Leslie Jordan used to say. . . "Hey all you hunker-downers. Well Shit!"

In this episode the boys chat with Hunter Schwarz, the founder of Yello and a seasoned journalist with credits from The Washington Post, CNN, and Buzzfeed. Hunter brings his unique expertise at the intersection of politics, pop culture, and visual media to unpack the key cultural and aesthetic trends shaping the upcoming election. We explore how design, social media, and popular culture are influencing candidates’ messaging, campaign branding, and the ways voters engage with politics. Join us for an insightful discussion on the shifting visual language of American elections and what these trends might reveal about the future of political persuasion.

This week, the boys are back with part 2 of our 3-part social media series. This week, we talk about situations where people have had consequences from posts they made on social media. This week, the boys talk about social media trends that become harmful. TikTok and Inst challenges that go from fun to tragic, or posts that end up having dire consequences for the people who made them. Our digital age gives access to things we might otherwise never see or learn about. That broadens horizons and allows us to see the diversity of our bigger world. But it sometimes comes with costs. Whether you are someone who loves to do social media challenges, or a parent of a young person who may be exposed to these, it is good to raise consciousness about this darker side of our digital landscape.

This week, Joe and Paul welcome a special guest, Joshua Schubart. Born and raised on Long Island, Joshua has been working as a professional actor for over a decade.
Joshua had a tough childhood, growing up homeless and in the foster care system. At 14, his foster parents put him in Catholic school, and his life took a turn for the better. He discovered acting in his early teens, as an escape from his day-to-day challenges. He would often say that acting literally saved his life, giving him the drive and motivation to make his dreams come true. Joshua attended the Asolo Conservatory for actor training and got a BA in Acting from Stony Brook University. Joshua has been seen in projects ranging from small indie films to walking the boards at the Metropolitan Opera. Some of his recent work includes a recurring role in the Amazon series The Tick, and appearances in Seven Seconds (Netflix) and High Maintenance (HBO). His voice can also be heard on a long list of audiobooks available on Amazon Audible, including Blue Summer, Lorelei and Blaze of Ecstasy. We had a great time getting to know Joshua. Check out his work. You will be glad you did!

Happy Season 5 people! We are so excited to start our fifth season of These Unprecedented Gays! In some way, it feels like it was just yesterday that we were kicking off our first few episodes. We have a lot of fun things planned for this new season. In fact, we were so excited we started recording early. We started our podcast in unprecedented times during the COVID pandemic. Now, at the start of our new season, we are again facing the unprecedented. This week, we focus on the crazy world of US politics. It has been a roller coaster, a dumpster fire, a soap opera . . . . call it what you want. But times they are a changin'. We are inspired and filled with hope as Kamala Harris and Tim Walz dominate the national news, and inject a new level of energy and drive for this November's presidential election. Let's talk about what's up!

We are very lucky to welcome back our favorite guest for his second annual Pride episode . . . the multi-hyphenate, guru of gay health and wellbeing, the influencer that had us at "butt stuff" . . . Dr. Carlton Thomas. Aside from being a board certified, Mayo Clinic trained gastroenterologist that focuses on gay health. After a week off, the boys workshop a new feature called, "Did she eat?!?!" After that, get ready for a very "moving" episode where we break down the major even in Paul's and Andy's life -- the move to our new home/podcast studio. Moving is hard! Moving after you have lived in the same place for 9 years is even harder. We downsized to a smaller place and were able to release many things that were just cluttering our world. Thank God for friends like Joe and Nick, and for movers who are willing to do the heavy lifting. Fortunately, after less than a week, we love the new place and are getting settled very easily.

This week Paul and Joe talk about queer spaces, their significance in the past and today, how they have changed, how they continue to be important, and how we continue to depend on them for connection, community, validation, and to some degree, safety. Queer spaces could be a digital platform, a church, youth group, bar, night club, or even a chosen family. We all need a place to consider home. As queer people, we learn to find our space and our tribe where we can be validated, affirmed, loved and supported. We want TUGays Podcast to be a queer space for fun, laughter, entertainment, and education with an occasional side of provocation. We love that you share our space and our hearts every week.

This week, the boys discuss an issue that we all need to confront eventually -- getting older the ageism that can come with it. We read that ageism is considered one of the last socially accepted prejudices out there. Our modern "aware" world has cultivated so much sensitivity to gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, physical disability and mental illness, but discrimination because of age is as prevalent as ever! That is especially true in the queer community where youth is a prized commodity. Join us to share our personal experiences, fears and challenges with getting older. This week, we are going to do something completely different! Joe is in Europe on holiday. So we thought it would be fun to give Nick and Andy a chance to provide a "behind the scenes" perspective on producing the podcast in a Producer Story Hour. Nick, Andy, Paul and our guest fact checker, Steve, will provide a fun dive into how the podcast is created each week.

This week, the boys welcome a special guest, Christopher Frick (a/k/a Pup Mephisto), who is a military veteran, musician (we met Chris through the SD Gay Men's Chorus), content creator, an avid reader and an incredibly warm and kind person. Among other things, Chris has explored his sexuality within the leather and puppy play communities. This is the first time the boys have gotten to speak candidly with someone who is active with Pup Play. We tried to ask questions and have an open mind, and were able to get a better understanding of this community and how it has impacted Chris both socially and sexually. We loved Chris' self-awareness and candor. As usual, we learned and laughed a lot. We hope that Chris' journey gives you a glimpse into a world that you may not understand or even be aware of. And be sure to check out Chris' book club on Instagram (Insta: @scarletwidower). Bark! Bark!

This week we have our special annual Pride episode. For those who don't know, San Diego celebrates Pride in July. As a special treat, the boys welcome back one of our favorite guests,Doctor Carlton Thomas. Doctor Carlton is a Mayo Clinic trained gastroenterologist who continues to advocate and represent queer health issues across the US and around the world. He recently was invited to celebrate pride at the White House, was named a member of the 2023 Queerty Pride 50, and was named one of the OUT100 in Out Magazine in 2022. This week he will be honored with a San Diego Pride "2023 Spirit of Sonewall Award" being named the "Hero of Pride." It is such a privilege to celebrate the accomplishments and contribution that Dr. Carlton brings to our global LGBTQIA+ community. We know you will enjoy hearing about the good doctor's latest exploits and brushes with celebrity. We couldn't pick a better guest to embody all that PRIDE means to us. Happy Pride y'all!

Navigating one relationship can be difficult sometimes. Imagine how much more challenging it must be to manage multiple loving relationships at the same time! This week Joe and Paul welcome Stephanie Sellars, the writer, co-director, producer and star of the award-winning independent film, "Lust Life Love," that explores the topic of polyamory in an honest, visceral and fresh way. Stephanie draws from both personal experience and from her keen observation to present a candid and sincere look into the sensual, complex, titillating and sometimes heartbreaking world of polyamory.

This week Joe and Paul welcome Jonathan and Thomas West, aka Daddy & Papa, to talk about their upcoming book, "A Kid's Book About Gay Parents," (part of the "A Kid's Book About" series). We discuss their personal quest to grow their family in the gay old-fashioned way — adoption. They share the joy, heartbreak, wisdom and blessings that come with creating and nurturing a family. In today's world, conventionality is irrelevant and its all about LOVE. That's what counts! Their family mantra is "Acceptance Through Visibility!" and these daddies walk the walk! Anyone who is a parent, who wants to be a parent, or who ever had a parent will appreciate their unique yet universal point of view. This week, Joe and Paul catch-up from a week of travels to Washington DC (Joe & Nick) and Orlando (Paul & Andy). Travel exposes us to new people, environments and experiences. It is something we all missed during much of COVID. So in many respects, we appreciate, even more, the opportunity to get away. Paul's trip was for a business reason - working at WSWA Access Live, the annual convention for the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America. This was their first convention since COVID and it was awesome to reconnect with family and friends who are all connected with this convention. Nick and Joe went to DC to reconnect with Nick's friends, to introduce Joe to the amazing city, and to see the beautiful cherry blossoms that bloom every April. Coming home and sharing experiences with good friends is one of the best parts of traveling.

The world right now feels topsy turvy, dark, and bleak. But there are still lights in the dark and Michael Galyean (a/k/a Dancing Blue Shirt Guy) is one of those lights. The multi-hyphenate viral sensation is back to talk about what he’s been up to, how he feels about living in Tennessee with everything happening with the drag ban, and what he’s been trying to do to help. We get deep and heavy but we also balance it with some laughs and lighthearted banter. We recorded this a couple of weeks ago, but this episode is even more poignant given the school shooting this week in Nashville. Do what you can to help; call your state representative, be an ally to your trans friends, whatever you think you can do. We all matter and love and kindness is what keeps us going. One thing you can always count on is change. Whether it is COVID, generational perspectives, changes in technology, or just the natural evolution of our culture, the rules of day-to-day life continue to shift. This week the boys have a special guest, Cristian Ortiz, an international award-winning pastry chef. Cristian has been busy these past few years building his name, his brand, and his arsenal of skills. He has traveled to some amazing places and worked in fantastic restaurants like "Tickets" in Barcelona, "Kettner Exchange" in San Diego, and "Atla" in NYC (to name just a few). He appeared on (and won) an episode of the Food Network's "Chopped Sweets" series (Season 3/Episode 6). Straddling the line between innovation and tradition with his cooking, he’s always looking for new flavor profiles, new techniques, or new ingredients. We appreciate Cristian taking time during his vacation in San Diego to be on the podcast. He is humble, but his food is incredible. Like the croissants he loves to make, Cristian has layers. This week, Paul and Joe kick-off the holiday season with a very special guest. We welcome to the studio, Charlie Beale, the Artistic Director of the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus. He joined SDGMC last year and has already been making a huge impact on the music and message of that organization. Charlie comes to San Diego after serving as the Artistic Director of the New York City Gay Men's Chorus and before that, the London Gay Men's Chorus. Charlie is an international choral director, jazz educator, composer-arranger and author, with a unique approach to activist choral singing. He has worked with giants in the music and entertainment industry. But more importantly, he is a delightful, down-to-earth guy that we were just "chuffed" to have in the studio. We know that you will love to get to know more about him, and to discover his vision for how to impact the queer community through music.
We want to also encourage you to get out this weekend and next weekend to see the SDGMC holiday show, "Jingle" which shows on December 4th at Sycuan Casino, and on December 10th and 11th at the Balboa Theater in San Diego. Tickets are available through the SDGMC website (linked below). Cheer on our own Joe Granelli and Nick Stone who will both be singing with the chorus!

This week the boys welcome a very special guest, Fiona Dawson. She is an Emmy®-nominated and award-winning director, producer, writer, and speaker, Dawson has advocated for the LGBTQ+ community for nearly two decades. Relating her personal experiences as a cisgender, gay and then bisexual woman, she blasts the stereotypes and stigma faced by people who don't fit neatly in a 'male' or 'female' category.
For thousands of years, cultures around the world have had a concept of gender and sex as being nonbinary. With humor and wit, Dawson offers a direct and uncomplicated explanation of terms within the LGBTQ+ community for allies, supportive family and friends, or anyone curious to know more about gender and sexuality.
Fiona shares inspiring stories from the LGBTQ+ community of kindness and courage in the face of adversity. Her short film Transgender, at War and in Love (2015) for The New York Times and feature documentary TransMilitary (2018) helped elevate the stories of active-duty transgender service members to end their ban from the US military. With her genuine and warm heart, people describe Fiona as the bisexual, female version of Mr. Rogers. Your Auntie Fiona. Without a doubt, Fiona is a ball of energy and we can't wait to share her with all of you!

This week, Paul and Joe take a trip back in time to remember stores, foods and other products that we loved, but that are no longer with us. There are so many things that are no longer with us but that helped define our experience as children, teenagers, and young adults. Especially in these unprecedented times, remembering the good old days gives us a moment of escape from today's insanity. We hope it makes you laugh, and crave some of the great things about yesteryear.

This week, Paul and Joe talk about all the crazy stuff going on in the world. Please note that we record our episodes 1 - 2 weeks before they air. Certainly, a lot happened in the world over the last 2 weeks. In this episode, you won’t be hearing us mention the Russian invasion of Ukraine because it had not yet started when we recorded. Our love and support goes out to the Ukrainian leaders and people as they bravely defend their country. We also celebrate all of the leaders of finance, technology, governments and commerce as they rally to do their part to sanction and hold Russia accountable for its aggression. We admire the bravery of Russian citizens who are risking personal safety and freedom to protest against this war. We hope that this episode offers a little comic relief — a small distraction from everything happening. Mostly we join with so many others who want to see peace restored to the region, and to have an outcome that preserves Ukrainian democracy and autonomy. WE STAND WITH UKRAINE!

This week, Joe and Paul talk about the D (and we don't mean Dallas). Yes, the phallus or pick one of a hundred names that we give it. Well it's the second to last episode of Season 1. This week, Joe and Paul delve into social media. Whether you like, link, share, snap, post, pin, tweet or tock, you will appreciate this look at the history of our digital world community. It has enraged us, bolstered us, triggered us, and helped us feel a little less alone. In its best light, it has given us a world where anyone can connect and have a voice or stage. In its darkest corners, it has divided us and been a megaphone of hate, intolerance and propaganda. We want to focus on the lighter side. At the end of the day, social media "is a great place to tell the world what you’re thinking before you’ve had a chance to think about it." (Chris Pirillo, founder of LockerGnome)
