Shrien and Anni Dewani had only been married for 3 weeks when they arrived in Cape Town, South Africa for their honeymoon, and they'd only been in Cape Town for a day when tragedy struck. While out sightseeing one night, their taxi was hijacked by two men. The driver and Shrien were kicked out of the car, and later the car was found with Anni's body inside. It was utterly devastating for everyone that had ever known and loved Anni, but no one could guess where this investigation would take them.

This is one of the most complex and bizarre stories we’ve covered: the story of Natalia Grace, a little girl adopted from Ukraine whose age and behavior ignited a global firestorm of controversy. When Michael and Kristine first adopted 6 year old Natalia, everything was great. Natalia was welcomed into the family, she seemed to fit right in. But after a few months, issues started to arise that caused the Barnett’s to question who Natalia really was. Was she an innocent child looking to be loved by her adopted family, or was everything about her a lie?  SPONSORS: Hello Fresh Go to HelloFresh.com/50creepers and and use code 50creepers for 50% off plus free shipping! This is one of the most baffling stories we have ever covered. Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos were two young men who vanished into thin air under eerily similar circumstances. In January of 2004, Terrance vanished after he was last seen getting into the backseat of Sheriff's Deputy Steven Calkins' car, who initially said he had no recollection of the event. Later, his memory would return and he said he'd only given Terrance a ride to work at a nearby Circle K. This story left so many questions unanswered: Terrance did not work at the Circle K, so why would he have told the deputy that? And where had he gone after the Circle K? This case would become even more baffling when it was connected to the disappearance of a man named Felipe Santos, who had gone missing a few months before Terrance after last being seen in Deputy Calkins' squad car. At that time, Calkins had said he'd only given Felipe a ride.... to a nearby Circle K.

When a police officer saw a red car stopped at a green light just after 2 AM, he figured the driver had fallen asleep and he blew his horn hoping to wake the person up and continue on his way. What he didn’t expect was for the driver, a very small, young woman, to get out of the car and start confessing to a murder.  The woman was 28 year old Nikki Addimando, and she told the police officer how she had shot and killed her boyfriend of 9 years, Christopher Grover, and that his body was lying on the couch in their apartment. She told the officer she'd done it in self defense - Chris has been horrifically abusive to Nikki throughout their 9 year relationship. But there was something about her story the officer didn't like, and the prosecutor thought she could see Nikki for exactly what she really was - a master manipulator.  SPONSORS: Hello Fresh Go to HelloFresh.com/50creepers and and use code 50creepers for 50% off plus free shipping! Picture it: you’ve just made a dream come true by moving from the midwest to the beach. What could make it better? Oh right, the perfect guy. Joe Collier was seemingly the perfect man for Candy Williams.  He was good looking, charming, smart, he seemed to have his act together. What’s not to like? Candy thought her search for the one was over. He spoiled her with gifts, he was always wanting to give her whatever she needed, he was so attentive to her. But in April of 2006, she walked into her house to find what I would consider a horror scene. Every surface of the house was covered in thousands of post it notes, all of them saying something along the lines of I’m sorry, it’s too hard, I can’t do this.  From here, Joe’s behavior became increasingly bizarre. Candy started to realize that he was not her perfect match. Just when she thought it couldn’t get any worse, she found out about…… the murders.

We are still on vacation this week but didn't want to leave y'all hanging, so we are releasing an episode from the vault! This was one of the first bonus episodes we ever released, and still one of Kristin's favorites :) Martin McDonagh was driving through Vidor, Texas when he saw a series of billboards with a dramatic message: Raped While Dying. Still No Arrests. From Day One Police Knew Who Did It. These billboards left a very emotional impression on him. Such an impression that, without knowing the full story behind those billboards, he wrote a screenplay inspired by what he saw called 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, which he would also go on to direct. Some of the billboards in the movie came word for word from the billboards he’d seen in Vidor. And in the real case, 30 years later, there have still been no arrests in the murder of Kathy Page, even though those billboards say the case is solved and police know who the culprit is. So today I’m telling you the true story behind the movie. This is the story of 3 Billboards Outside Vidor, Texas, where the more I dug, all I found were lies upon lies, and at the center of it, heart ache. The more I read about this case, the more I realized - nothing was what it seemed. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In a bizarre tale that captivated the sports world, a star linebacker at Notre Dame found himself entangled in an intricate web of deception and emotional manipulation. When Manti Te'o started talking to Lennay Kekua online, they quickly bonded over their Samoan culture, their faith, and their connection to football. Texts turned to phone calls, and Manti found himself falling for her. But then, in September of 2012, he got a call letting him know that Lennay had died of the leukemia she'd been battling. Manti was heartbroken, but he decided to use his grief to fuel his football game, and he became unstoppable. Everyone knew what he'd gone through, and everyone was rooting for him. It seemed like such an inspirational story. That is, until he, and the entire world, discovered it was all a lie.

Inna Budnytska was living temporarily in a Miami hotel when, on February 21, 2005, she was found dumped on the side of the road, viciously beaten, raped, and left for dead. The investigation into her attack quickly hit a dead end when no one could figure out how she left the hotel in the first place. She was seen on camera going up to her room, and then never seen on camera again. The case went cold, until Inna filed a lawsuit against the hotel, and the hotel hired private investigator Ken Brennan to look into the matter. And there was nothing Brennan loved more than a good mystery.

It's SPOOOOKY season, y'all! I've been saving this one up for our Halloween episode, and Mogab was thoroughly creeped out so job well done! It was June of 2014, and Derek and Maria Broaddus were living the American dream: they had just closed on their dream home at 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey for $1.4 million. They loved everything about this house, and couldn’t wait to move in with their 3 young kids. But their dream became their nightmare when anonymous, threatening letters started showing up at the house, signed by someone calling themselves "The Watcher." The Watcher said it was their job - nay, their OBSESSION - to watch 657 Boulevard, just as their father did before them, and their grandfather before that. The Watcher referred to their kids as "young blood" and asked if they'd discovered what was hidden in the walls. And there was nothing the Broadduses could do to stop the letters from coming. In June of 2011, 27 year old Lauren Giddings was senselessly murdered. She had just graduated form law school, and was a month away from taking the BAR and becoming a full fledged attorney. When her friends and family discovered she'd been murdered, everyone was shocked. They couldn't figure out who would do something like this. Police had several suspects in mind, but they narrowed it down quickly when her neighbor, Stephen McDaniel, gave an odd interview to a local reporter.

We're living in frustration city for this one! This week, Kristin tells Mogab about the disappearance of Jason Landry - a fellow Texas State University student who was driving home to the Houston area for Christmas break of 2020 and disappeared in the small town of Luling, Texas. His car was found crashed and abandoned on a gravel road miles from the interstate. The clothes he was wearing were found strewn about the road. And Jason was nowhere to be found.

Rita Crundwell was living the high life. In 2011, she was a big deal on the quarter horse circuit; she had 52 world championships under her belt, and ran one of the best known quarter horse breeding operations in the country. She was incredibly successful, and it showed. She owned multiple homes, multiple cars. She had a $2 million dollar motor coach she used to take her to her horse competitions, and a $250,000 horse trailer to tow the horses. She was living a life of luxury, with her furs and her jewels. She also just so happened to be the treasurer for the small city of Dixon, Illinois. And the city's finances were in much worse shape than hers.

It was in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 3, 2016 when 19 year old Sarah Stern's car was found abandoned on a bridge in New Jersey. The car was reported by a few passers-by, and when police responded they could see the car wasn't damaged in any way, it had just been left abandoned, keys still inside. It appeared to be a suicide, but as police spoke with Sarah's friends, the possibility that she'd run off to Canada seemed to be likely. She had a large social circle that included celebrities, and was pursuing a modeling job herself. But on February 21, 2001, as she got ready for a date, Ashley was viciously murdered inside her own home. Robbery was ruled out as a possible motive, as was sexual assault. Police couldn't figure out why someone would have wanted to hurt her. And then investigators got a call from detectives in Chicago, who were investigating a murder a lot like Ashley's. And as they investigated further, more victims were uncovered.

Lisa wanted to be like her father, Todd Caldwell, who worked for the sheriff's department in their small town in Iowa. But those dreams came crashing down one morning when Seth said he heard a gunshot go off while he was in the shower. He jumped out of the shower and raced to where Lisa was sleeping in their bedroom to see that she'd been shot in the side. She was dead, and Seth was certain he knew who had done this: their neighbor, Brian Tate.

Like everyone else in March of 2020, Gretchen Anthony was trying to do her part for the pandemic by staying home, posting memes on Facebook, and watching Tiger King (probably). But after Thursday, March 19, there were no more posts from Gretchen on facebook. Her profile went dark, and she stopped communicating with loved ones. She even stopped sharing her location on her phone with her daughter, something she took very seriously.   But then on Monday, March 23, 2020, Gretchen’s friends and family started getting some bizarre texts from her. It started with a message saying she had been diagnosed with the Caronavirus, but after a few days, her loved ones started to doubt that was true. They started to think that something terrible happened to Gretchen, and someone was using the pandemic to cover up what they'd done to her.

In the 1960's, Ben and Bernice Novack were Miami Beach royalty. They were the owners of the Fountainbleu hotel, the hottest spot on Miami beach, known for it's old Hollywood glamour style. Everyone from JFK to the Rat Pack stayed there, and it was the place to be. The Novacks lived in the Penthouse Suite with their son, Ben Jr., until like all good things, the era came to an end in the 70's when the hotel went bankrupt. By 2009, Bernice was widowed and living a quiet life, while her son, Ben, found success in the hospitality industry. Then, in April of 2009, Bernice was found dead in her home at 86 years old. It appeared she had slipped getting out of her car and then stumbled into her house, where she died. Police and the medical examiner ruled her death accidental. It's unlikely that anyone would have ever looked twice at Bernice's death if not for what happened just three months later, when her now 53 year old son, Ben, was found dead in his hotel room.

We're so excited to be back! This week, we're talking about the kidnapping of Denise Huskins. In the middle of the night on March 22, 2015, a group of broke into the home of Aaron Quinn and kidnapped his girlfriend, Denise Huskins. Aaron's story involved kidnappers wearing wet suits who played pre-recorded messages and wanted very little ransom for Denise's return. His story seemed so unbelievable to police, who were convinced early on that Aaron had done something to Denise. When that seemed unlikely, they formed a new theory: that Denise had never been kidnapped, and she was actually the real life Gone Girl.

It was late 2001, and ads for Larry McNabney’s personal injury law firm in Sacramento were running constantly, and he always ended the ads with the same sign off - I’m Larry McNabney. Call Me. Only, people had been trying to call him, and no one had been able to speak to him for months. They might be able to get a hold of his wife and office manager, Elisa McNabney, or the office assistants, Ginger Miller and Sarah Dutra, but they would just always say that Larry was in rehab for his alcoholism or on vacation at a spa.

But after several months went by and Larry still hadn’t returned to his law office, his friends and family started to worry. They realized that the last time anyone had actually seen him was while he was in Southern California for a horse show. But no one that was there could remember the details of their last encounter with Larry because that horse show had been on September 11, 2001, the day the World Trade Center was attacked in New York.

Everyone was so focused on the news, and it was such a chaotic and confusing time, that no one could remember the details of that day, which made investigating his disappearance really tough. Because the truth is, Larry McNabney wasn’t in rehab, and he wasn’t on vacation or at a spa. Larry was dead. This is the murder of Larry McNabney.

When Deana Wild fell to her death off a cliff in Big Sur, California, authorities assumed this was a tragic accident. She was driving through Big Sur with a couple she lived with, Billie Joe and Virginia McGinnis, who said that she stumbled due to the high heels she was wearing on the cliff's edge. It's not uncommon for people to fall, they see it about once a month. The investigation was wrapped up quickly and Deana's mother Bobbie struggled to move on. When the burial insurance company wouldn't pay out to help with Deana's funeral costs, she asked for the help of a lawyer she knew, Steve Keeney. Keeney asked around, and as he dug into Deana's death and the McGinnis's background, he uncovered a web of lies, betrayal, and murder that spanned decades.

John Ruetten was absolutely in love with his new bride, Sherri Rasmussen. She was the total package: beautiful, fun to be with, and very smart. At 29, she was already the director of nursing at the hospital she worked at in Van Nuys, California, and she even lectured internationally on critical care nursing. But it all came to a sudden end when John arrived at their townhome just a few months after they'd gotten married to find her dead on the living room floor. He had no idea who could have done this, and told detectives neither of them had any enemies, anyone that would have wanted to hurt them. But Sherri's father, Nels, disagreed. Detectives were certain that this had been a burglary gone wrong, and as they explained that to Nels, he asked them: "Have you checked out John's ex-girlfriend? The lady cop?"

John's ex was a police officer named Stephanie Lazarus, and according to Nels, she'd had plenty of run-ins with Sherri that made Nels uneasy. But no one was listening to him.

Hi everyone! Mogab was sick this week, and so unfortunately we do not have a new episode for you all. We did not want to leave you hanging, though, so we decided it was a great time to re-release our episode on Anna Delvey!

This week, Kristin tells Mogab the story of Anna Delvy - one of the greatest con artists of our generation, which is saying a lot since Millennials can claim both Billy McFarland from Fyre Fest and Elizabeth Holmes from Theranos. Everyone loves a good scam story. And this is definitely a good scam story. So good, in fact, that Shonda Rhimes is making a show with Netflix about Anna Delvy: the German heiress trying to open her Center for Kids Who Can't Read Good (or something like that...). She lives in New York's fanciest hotels, is at all the best parties, and loves to tip big and take lavish trips with her friends. But weird things keep happening: her credit cards keep getting declined, or she's having trouble tapping into her trust fund, so her friends start covering for her. Only, she's not a German heiress. And she doesn't actually have any money. So how did she manage to con all her friends Into funding this lifestyle she wanted so badly?

I want to point people towards the National Center for Victims of Crime, who have a Financial Crime Resource Center. They wanted to provide a resource for victim-centered services in the area of financial fraud and so they produce a guide called

Taking Action: An Advocate’s Guide to Assisting Victims of Financial Fraud

This guide is designed to provide advocates with practical victim-centered resources to help navigate the various options available for reporting crimes, protecting other assets and preventing re-victimization. It also offers advice on how to assist with psychological and – where possible – financial recovery.

It was a usual routine for Mike to get up early on the weekends and go duck hunting, he was a very experienced hunter. But Mike never came home from this hunting trip. When Sharon Cave got a call that her 21 year old daughter, Jennifer, had not shown up to work, she was worried. Jennifer lived about 3 hours away in Austin, Texas, and there wasn't much Sharon could do except call around to all of Jennifer's friends, hospitals, even morgues. She was able to find out that Jennifer had gone out with a friend of hers the night before named Colton Pitonyak, but when Sharon spoke to Colton he told her he didn't know where Jennifer was. When she still hadn't been found by the next day, Sharon and her boyfriend, Jim Sedwick, decided to make the drive to Austin. A few years before, Alice wrote a memoir titled Lucky that chronicled a brutal rape she experienced in 1981, when she was 18. She wrote about identifying the man that raped her, testifying against him in court, and dealing with the trauma of being raped. In 2019, the film rights to Lucky were purchased and the project was green lit. But as producer Tim Mucciante read through the script and the memoir, he started seeing discrepancies that didn't sit right with him, especially when it came to the conviction of the rapist, Anthony Broadwater.

In 2003, the survivors of the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001 were still attempting to recover from the trauma they endured that day. One of the only places to go for support was a Yahoo chat room for 9/11 survivors and family members that lost loved ones in the attacks. One of the survivors in the group, Tania Head, saw the need for survivors to have their own group, one where they could talk freely about the details of that horrific day without the fear of offending anyone. She created a group just for survivors, and it was then that she finally felt comfortable sharing her own story. Tania had been on the 96th floor of the South Tower the day the planes hit, and her journey to survival was so incredible, so harrowing, that it left the others in the group at a loss for words. They admired her so much for what she'd gone through, and the strength she showed. Eventually, Tania helped to form the World Trade Center Survivors Network, and was elected president. She gave guided tours of ground zero, where she would share her story with visitors. No one knew that Tania Head was hiding a secret.

Stacey Castor seemed to be in a panic when she called the police to report that her husband, David Castor, didn't make it into work. She told them he'd been feeling depressed, and was concerned it was suicide. Police went to the Castor home and discovered David's body on his bed, dead from antifreeze poisoning. Based on Stacey's comments, they were primed to label it a suicide and call it a day. But one detective wasn't so sure, especially when he learned Stacey's first husband was also dead...

Steven Mineo had been a devoted follower of cult leader Sherry Shriner for all of his adult life. He considered Sherry a prophet of God, and believed her when she preached about Alien reptiles that had come to Earth to take over human bodies, and how these "reptilians" would lead to the return of the antichrist. Through Sherry's devoted online community, Steven met Barbara Rogers, and it wasn't long before they were referring to each other as husband and wife. Everything seemed great, until one day Sherry suddenly turned on Barbara and Steven, and her entire online community followed suit...

On September 10, 1999, Edna Dishon arrived home in the afternoon to see her 17 year old daughter's car in the driveway. Jessica should have still been at school, so Edna went inside the house to see if she'd stayed home sick that day, but Jessica wasn't there. She called the school and found that Jessica had never arrived. But when she looked inside her car, she knew immediately that something was terribly wrong. Inside were Jessica's backpack, purse, phone, and one shoe inside. Her phone had two numbers punched in: 9-1. Edna and her husband, Mike Dishon, rushed to the police station to report Jessica missing, but the sheriff's deputy didn't see any cause for concern. He told them Jessica probably ran away, or maybe she was at the football game. He told them to come back the next day if Jessica didn't come home. But Jessica never came home.

We might not recognize the name Flordelis dos Santos de Souza, but in Brazil, she is a celebrity. She was born in the slums of Rio de Janeiro called favelas, the 4th of 5 children, and after she made her way out, she made a name for herself as a gospel singer, eventually becoming a congressman.

But her real claim to fame was the fact that she seemed to have a real heart for the children being affected by the drugs wars in the country, and she started adopting them. She didn’t stop adopting them until she had at least 55 children. She married one of her earliest adopted sons, Anderson Do Carmo. And then, in 2019, Anderson was murdered…

Urban legends of tainted Halloween candy have spread for decades. Every year, worried parents check their children’s candy one by one, take them to the police station to be scanned for metal, anything they can do to make sure it’s okay to eat. And it turns out, we have one man to thank for that fear.
It was a rainy Halloween in 1974 and 8 year old Timothy O’Bryan was trick or treating with his dad, Ronald O’Bryan, and some family friends. The big score that night was a two foot long pixie stick, and he couldn’t wait to try it. But within an hour of eating the candy, Timothy O’Bryan was dead.

On October 10, 2016, within a 90 minute time frame and surrounded by friends and family, Typhenie Johnson vanished. She’d been making dinner for a date at the apartment she shared with her brother and his girlfriend when her ex, boyfriend, Chris Revill, showed up. They argued downstairs for awhile, and when Chris came back up to the apartment he told everyone she’d gotten in a car with someone and left. She was never seen again.

Several miles away, the Islam family was watching the news when Typhenie’s disappearance was announced. They were shocked. Taalibah Islam had disappeared almost 10 years earlier after having a new baby with Chris Revill. And he’d had a very similar story for the Islam family when Taalibah went missing…

Elizabeth Horton received a phone call from her daughter, Kathleen Schroll, in the middle of the night, telling her Pete was in the house, he was going to kill her husband Carl, and then kill her. Right away, Elizabeth's son, Randy, called 911 to report the phone call, but by the time police arrived at the Schroll's, it was too late. Carl's body was found in the bedroom, and Kathleen was lying dead in the living room. Both died of gunshot wounds. When police found out about the phone call, and how Kathleen had been in a bitter court battle with a man named Pete Coones over his father's life insurance money, it was crystal clear to police who had committed the murder. It was June 20, 2001 when Russell "Rusty" Yates got a phone call from his wife, Andrea Yates, telling him to come home. The couple had 5 children: Noah (7), John (5), Paul (3), Luke (2), and Mary (6 months), and Rusty worried that something was wrong with one of them. When he asked if any of them were hurt, Andrea said yes. When he asked who, Andrea said, "All of them."

It wasn't until he arrived home that he would discover the awful truth - Andrea had drowned each of their 5 children, one by one, in the bath tub. It was an unfathomable crime, and horrified the entire nation. What could possibly lead to something as heinous as this happening?

This is part 2 of Kristin's non-consecutive, so far 3 part hometown series: "The Women of Clear Lake Who Snapped."

It was July, 1932 in the Bronx, New York. Prohibition is alive and well, and we’re a few years into the Great Depression. Francis Pasqua, Daniel Kriesberg, and Tony Marino were sitting together in Tony's speakeasy while Tony complains about how bad business is. That's when Francis has a completely brilliant plan - sign one of the regulars up for life insurance and then stage their murder to look like an accident. The group loved the plan, and they got right to work.
Michael Malloy was the down-on-his-luck regular they chose. They figured it would be easy. Michael would come in every day and drink until he passed out. They figured the alcohol would kill him quick enough.
Only... it didn't. The group tried everything they could think of, but Michael just wouldn't die.

Angela Green was 51 when she disappeared in 2019. Her husband, Geoff Green, initially had a very odd explanation for Angela's disappearance. He told their 19 year old daughter, Ellie, that he'd been worried about Angela's mental state, and he'd arranged it so a psychiatric hospital would take Angela from a grocery store parking lot and commit her to their facilities. He said there was a struggle when they took her, and he didn't want Ellie to visit for her own safety. He wouldn't even tell her where the hospital is . Several days later, Geoff broke the news to Ellie - he'd gotten a call from the hospital telling him that Angela had died of a stroke in their care. Geoff said he paid a man from the hospital to cremate her and return her in an urn, which was at his house. He told Ellie they were not going to have a funeral, and he asked her not to tell Angela's family she was dead. Only, there's not a record of Angela's death anywhere in the United States. So what happened to Angela Green? Where is she?

It was 2013 in Danvers, Massachusetts and Colleen Ritzer had been teaching math at Danvers High School for just 2 years. She loved teaching math and her students loved her, which is why it was such a shock when just before Halloween that year, she went missing. Her parents called around to her friends and colleagues looking for her when she didn't come home at her usual time and wasn't answering her phone, but no one knew where she'd been. Her parents tried not to worry too much - she'd probably made plans and forgotten to tell them, but maybe she'd been in an accident and unable to reach them. They decided to go up to the school and look for her. They found her car in the parking lot, but no sign of Colleen anywhere. And that's when they discovered Colleen wasn't the only person that was missing. Diana Chism had filed a missing persons report on her son, Phillip Chism, after he failed to come home after school. Police investigated both cases, but no one was prepared for what they found...

It was late on May 19, 1983 when the car pulled up to the ER in Springfield, Oregon. Inside were three children, and they'd all been shot in the chest. Their mother, Elizabeth Diane Downs, had a horrifying story to tell: she'd been driving the kids home that night when a bushy haired stranger had flagged her down. He tried to steal her car, but when Diane put up a fight, he pulled out a gun and shot her kids. The story seemed so bizarre to detectives, so unbelievable, that they couldn't help but suspect Diane of being behind the shooting. But why would a mother shoot her own children?

Colleen Shipman's flight arrived in Orlando a little after 1 AM on February 6, 2007. Exhausted, she didn't realize someone else had arrived at the airport - someone that was watching her. They stalked her as she discovered her baggage was delayed and her drink her coffee and eat her danish in the airport Starbucks. They followed her onto the shuttle bus that would take her to her car, and finally, when they were alone in the parking lot, they struck, attacking her with pepper spray before Colleen was able to get away.
The most bizarre part of Colleen's night would be when she discovered the identity of her stalker, and the reason for the attack.

On June 13, 1996, 18-year-old Angie Dodge was found in her apartment in Idaho Falls brutally raped and murdered. Despite having plenty of DNA in the case, police quickly ran out of suspects until the following January, when a new lead brought them to 20-year-old Christopher Tapp. His DNA didn't match that left at the crime scene, but that didn't matter - not after he gave police a confession about his involvement. By trial, Chris recanted his confession, saying it was coerced, but why would anyone confess to something they hadn't done?

On May 30, 2014, Morgan Geyser celebrated her 12th birthday with her two best friends: Payton Leutner and Anissa Weier. They did all the normal stuff 12 year olds do at slumber parties - they went to a skating rink, they played dress up, they played on their phones. But the next morning, Payton was found in the park with multiple stab wounds.

First responders were shocked to find a 12 year old who had been stabbed, but their shock would turn to horror when she told them who had done it: 12 year old Morgan Geyser. And the reason behind the attack would lead investigators down a rabbit hole of internet lore, centered around one character: Slenderman.

It was the spring of 1997 and Brook Baker was a journalism student at Vincennes University in Indiana, working on an expose of one of the fraternities on campus. One night, her brother went to visit her apartment where he found her dead in her bedroom.  In the bathroom, the tub had been left running, and the kitchen sink had been filled with water. As police investigated, their suspect list continued to grow faster than they could eliminate people - there were the brothers of the fraternity, the creepy landlord who would come into her apartment often unannounced, her on again, off again boyfriend. But every lead they went down turned up more questions than answers...

The worst mistake Claire Williamson ever made was the day she responded to an ad in a Seattle daily newspaper to ask for a copy of Fasting for the Cure of Disease, a book by Dr. Linda Burfield Hazzard. Claire and her sister, Dorothea, who went by Dora, were extremely close and extremely wealthy, heirs to a fortune of nearly 29 million that they alone controlled, but they were obsessed with one thing: fad cures. Cures for what, you might ask? I have no idea because both Claire and Dorothea seemed to be in perfectly fine health. Neither of them suffered from any serious illness. But Claire especially could not let this search for wellbeing go. She would die to be healthy.

One day, Biology professor Amy Bishop spent 50 minutes in a staff meeting at the University of Alabama in Huntsville before pulling a gun out of her purse and letting shots fire around the conference room. By the time her gun jammed, only a minute into the shooting, she’d already killed 3 people and injured 3 others. At first glance, this seemed to be retaliation - Amy had recently been denied tenure. But then police in Alabama got a phone call from the chief of police in Amy’s hometown near Boston that would send their investigation in an entirely different direction…

Rebecca Zahau was found hanging outside the Speckles Mansion on Coronado Island, California. She was naked, bound, and gagged, and there was a disturbing message written on the wall, which to most lay people immediately looked suspicious. But police were quick to categorize this death as a suicide. This was especially odd, since just 2 days later there had been another death in the mansion - that of 6 year old Max Shacknai, which had happened under Rebecca’s supervision. Was this a case of grief leading to a suicide? Or was Rebecca actually murdered, and if so, by whom?

Martha Puebla was 16 years old when she became a victim of gang violence, gunned down while sitting outside her house chatting with friends. The suspect was obvious - Jose Ledesme and Mario Catalan had been arrested for another murder and told that Martha had identified them as the shooter. But instead of going after Jose and Mario, investigators arrest Mario's little brother, Juan Catalan, for the murder of Martha Puebla. Proving his innocence would require a wild goose chase involving the Dodgers, HBO, Larry David, and an enormous amount of luck.

Back in Spring of 2017, Fyre Fest was going to be the experience of a lifetime. A luxury music festival in an idyllic tropical setting on a private island in the Bahamas. Festival-goers were promised a real-life island fantasy with luxury accommodations, gourmet food and the chance to party with rappers and models. People paid hundreds to hundreds of thousands for their tickets and accommodations for Fyre Fest, expecting a weekend living in the lap of luxury.

What they got was something slightly less than that. The luxury villas they were promised turned out to be FEMA disaster relief tents. The local seafood, Bahamian style sushi, and pig roast they were promised turned out to be… you know it - cheese sandwiches in a styrofoam container. Mostly rich millennials with job titles like influencer were suddenly resorting to Lord of the Flies level anarchy just to make sure their most basic needs were met.

And it all started when Billy McFarland met rapper Ja Rule...

This week, Kristin tells Mogab about the murder of Angela Samota. Angela was a 20 year old college student in Dallas, Texas when she called her boyfriend, Ben, in the middle of the night sounding really odd. She said there was a man in her apartment asking to use the bathroom and her phone, and she asked Ben to keep talking to her. When she suddenly hung up, Ben was worried and drove over to her apartment. There, she was found on her bed, stabbed to death. It would take 20 years and a best friend who never gave up on finding Angela's killer for this case to finally be solved.

This week, Kristin tells Mogab all about Angela Diaz. She was an attorney and a survivor of cervical cancer who had finally found love in Ian Diaz. They were married within a month of meeting each other, and a few months after that Angela became pregnant with twins! Everything was going great for the new couple, until someone started a major harassment campaign against Angela. She started receiving threatening emails, and someone started posting ads on Craigslist, posing as Angela and asking men to make her rape fantasies come true. It became clear that the longer this person continued, the more danger Angela was in. But she knew exactly who was posting the ads and sending the emails....

We have a special episode for you today! You might call it a passion project. It’s Kristin’s birthday week and for her birthday, she decided this episode was going to be her genie wish case - you know, the one case you would spend a genie wish on to find out exactly what happened.

We all know the case - it’s been covered extensively in podcasts like Serial, HBO documentaries, books, blogs, etc - January 13, 1999, High school student Hae Min Lee was murdered. Her body was found almost a month later, half buried in Leakin Park in Baltimore. Her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, is serving a life sentence for her murder, but we all have QUESTIONS.

This won’t be a total recap of Serial. Instead, Kristin takes Mogab BEYOND Serial, diving into everything Serial left out or didn’t uncover. Let’s get into it!

It's Mogab's BIRTHDAY EPISODE!! It's a two for one episode today where Kristin tells Mogab all about that time our girl, Taylor, was assaulted at a meet and greet, and then sued because of it! The level of audacity is high in this one.

Then, Kristin tells Mogab about Kesha's court situation against her producer, Dr. Luke. Just after Kesha signed a 6 year record deal with Dr. Luke's label, he (allegedly) raped her. Kesha has done everything possible to get out of this contract with her abuser, but the system continues to fail her. You will not listen to 'Praying' the same again.

Kelli Peters was just out there living her best life, volunteering at her daughter's school while running a small business painting tie-dyed jeans, when a police officer came to the school to say he needed to speak to her.  The officer told her that they'd gotten a call that she'd been driving at the school under the influence of drugs, and that she had drugs in her car parked at the school. Kelli was shocked. The worst thing she'd ever done in her life was that time she threw her company phone out the window after she'd quit. So she let the officer search her car, and low and behold - they find the drugs. "They're not mine!" Kelli insisted, like every other person in that situation.

But Kelly wasn't lying. It turns out, Kelli had an enemy.

He knew what it was like to struggle financially, and so he gave and gave and gave and gave. But it was exhausting. Until Dee Dee Moore showed up, saying she could help with all his problems. Her husband, Russell Faria, was the one to find her body, and immediately police were suspicious of him, even though his alibi was rock solid. Throughout their investigation, police would uncover Betsy's friend, Pam Hupp, was the last person to see Betsy alive. She was also the sole beneficiary of Betsy's life insurance policy, and had no alibi for the time of Betsy's murder. Unfortunately, it seems the police on this case were what the French call 'les incompetents', and they arrested Russ Faria for the murder of his wife.

This week, Kristin and Mogab dive into the major rabbit hole that is Britney Spears and the Free Britney Movement. For the past 13 years, Britney Spears has been living under a legal conservatorship that has complete control over her person and her estate. It controls who she talks to, where she lives, what she eats, what jobs she can take, and how she spends her money. The person in control of all of this is her father, Jamie Spears, someone that Britney has never been close to.
In part 1, Kristin tells Mogab all about what led up to Britney being put under the conservatorship. We all watched Britney's decline through tabloid and paparazzi eyes, but what's the real story? #FreeBritney!

It was September, 2006 and Megan Meier was 13 years old when the MySpace friend request popped up. It was from a boy named Josh Evans, and everything about him was perfect. Maybe a little too perfect... Talking to Josh made Megan happier than she'd been in a long time, because she experienced low self esteem and depression. Seemingly out of nowhere, Josh turned on Megan and began firing hateful messages at her, and this ended in absolute tragedy. But little did anyone know, Josh Evans wasn't real. It's our first serial killer, peeps and creeps! This week, Kristin tells Mogab the story of Belle "Triflers Need Not Apply" Gunness, the most prolific female serial killer In American history.
Belle was a true success story - she was able to overcome the struggles of being a woman immigrating to the US on her own in the late 1800’s. She managed to make a very comfortable life for herself by employing such tactics as arson, insurance fraud, and lots of good ol’ fashioned murder. And many people, including me, think she got away with all of it.

This week, Kristin tells Mogab all about Brittany Murphy and the mysteries surrounding her death. Brittany Murphy was a talented actress who starred in movies like Clueless, Girl Interrupted, Just Married, and 8 Mile. When she was 32, Brittany died suddenly of supposed "natural causes". People were confused - how could a healthy 32 year old woman die suddenly of natural causes? And then her husband, Simon Monjack, started doing interviews, and boy were they CREEPY. It made people wonder - could there be someone to blame for Brittany's death?
Kristin and Mogab also debate such philosophical questions as who is better: Eminem or TI? Is it offensive to compare Brittany Murphy to Lucille Ball? Is it a crime to have seen not a single one of her movies?

Happy New Year, peeps and creeps! We are back this week with part 1 of the Collar Bomb Heist. On August 28, 2003 in Erie, PA, Brian Wells robbed a PNC bank for somewhere around $9,000, much less than the $250k he was trying to get. He was arrested nearby shortly after the robbery, and police discovered he had a bomb locked around his neck.

Brian told police that a group of black men had grabbed him while he’d been out on a pizza delivery, chained the bomb around his neck at gunpoint, and forced him to rob the bank. The bomb went off, killing Brian Wells, before the bomb squad could even arrive.

After his death, police found notes in his car, detailing a scavenger hunt he was to go on after he’d gotten the money that would lead him to all the keys and codes necessary to unlock the collar, and the police were left with so many questions. Who was the mastermind behind the twisted plot to rob the PNC bank, what was the point of the scavenger hunt, and just how innocent was Brian Wells?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, peeps and creeps! This week, your gift from True Crime Creepers is the story of the Goose Green Stabbings. In 2003, 14 year old John was stabbed twice: once in the chest and once in the abdomen. Though he survived, his friendship with his best friend, 16 year old Mark, did not. John told police it was a crazed mask wearing stabbing man that stabbed him, but the truth was - it was Mark. Police thought that was the end of their investigation, until they got their hands on 46,000 pages of chat transcripts from an MSN chatroom Mark and John were highly involved in, and police would see that this case involved everything from British spies to the Queen herself as they sought to understand what happened between these two teenage boys.

It's a rough one this week, peeps and creeps! Kristin tells Mogab all about the Austin Yogurt Shop Murders, where 4 teenage girls were murdered In 1991. Jennifer Harbison and Eliza Thomas were 17 years old, working the closing shift at the I Can't Believe It's Yogurt shop. Jennifer's sister, Sarah Harbison, 15, and Amy Ayers, 13, were hanging out at the shop until Jennifer got off work and could take them all home. Before that could happen, the 4 girls were shot execution style and then set on fire In what was described by the lead detective as "wholesale carnage". To make matters worse, the case turned cold for 8 years until the police narrowed In on 4 teenage suspects and attempted to prosecute them without any evidence. The case remains unsolved to this day.

Hey peeps and creeps! We have an extra episode for you this week - an update on two cases we have previously covered! New suspects have been uncovered by a private investigator in the Scott Peterson case, as well as a new theory Kristin dug up. Could Laci have been killed at the hands of a serial killer?
We also have an update on the Richard Glossip case! His attorney, Don Knight, has uncovered a staggering 32 NEW witnesses that can testify in his defense, but right now the state will never hear from these witnesses. An Oklahoma representative is trying to change these laws that keep death row inmates from being able to present new evidence in their case if their appeals have all been exhausted.

Happy Thanksgiving to all our American friends!

Did Scott Peterson really kill his wife, Laci? This is the question that haunts Kristin as she takes Mogab through the conviction of Scott Peterson in Part 2. They discuss the trial, the evidence against Scott, and all the evidence the jury never got to hear. Kristin discusses the antics of a jury that could have their own reality show, and gives Mogab some compelling alternate theories.

Mogab has been living under a rock and she knows it, okay! So Kristin tells her about the murder of Laci Peterson, who disappeared Christmas Eve 2002 when she was 8 months pregnant. Everyone seems convinced that her husband, Scott, murdered her, especially when it’s revealed that Scott had been having an affair with Amber Frey, and the media would go on to convict him night after night in the court of public opinion. However, the evidence against Scott is far from overwhelming. In part 1, Mogab and Kristin debate the guilt of Scott as Kristin takes Mogab through the events of the case, from the day Laci went missing to the day Scott is arrested for her murder.

Mogab knows 0.0 about Scientology, so Kristin explains how this billion dollar business (slash cult) uses tax exempt money to harass people and ruin their lives. This is all done with directives from a written policy called Fair Game. These are their stories. Dun. Dun.

Kristin tells Mogab the story of Paulette Cooper, a journalist who wrote an expose on Scientology and was then harassed for the next several DECADES, including a frame job for sending bomb threats that nearly sent her to prison.

Then, Kristin tells Mogab how Scientology used Fair Game against the IRS to get tax exempt status.

One investigation could have not have gone worse, with the rape victim charged and fined for making a false report. The other shows what happens when an investigation is done right. Welcome to the first episode of True Crime Creepers! In this episode, Kristin tells Mogab the story of Richard Glossip, who Is on death row In Oklahoma for hiring Justin Sneed to kill his boss, Barry Van Treese. His conviction Is based almost solely on Sneed's word, with no good evidence connecting him to this crime. How did the word of an accomplice carry enough weight to secure a conviction?

Just a warning that Mogab's audio quality is not tip top because she accidentally recorded through airpods Instead of the nice mic she has. Whoops. This has been rectified in all other episodes.
