Back in 1983, Vince McMahon took over the WWF from his father.
Vince needed to get the WWF Championship off babyface champion Bob Backlund and onto Vince's new Golden Goose Hulk Hogan!
The Iron Sheik was the transitional champion to get the title from one babyface to another.
Years later. Long after the 1500 day Hulk Hogan title run, Bret Hart won the WWF Championship at WrestleMania X and wrestled a legendary feud with his brother Owen for most of 1994.
But Bret lost his WWF Championship on this day in 1994.
Not to his brother Owen (although Owen played a role).
There's a lot of symmetry to the 1983 Bob Backlund story and the 1994 Bret Hart story.

When you think back on WWF in 1996, you’ll remember the Iron Man Match between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart at WrestleMania 12.
You’ll also remember Steve Austin winning King of the Ring giving way to his huge run that would follow.
And as we got ready for the Survivor Series that took place on this day (November 17) in 1996, Bret Hart would return from his hiatus to face Steve Austin at Survivor Series 1996.
The whole event is pretty much remembered for that match because it really kicked off the Bret Hart - Steve Austin feud that most fans wish never ended.
Not enough can be said about Bret and Steve on this night or any of the matches that would follow.
But as great as that match was . . . other very important historical things happened in Madison Square Garden on this night in 96.

If you watch closely, it’s pretty easy to see that both the November 8th and November 15th episodes of Monday Night Raw took place at the Fernwood Resort in Bushkill, PA. That’s because while November 8th was a live episode of Raw, the November 15th episode was a taped one.
Throughout the entire episode of Raw, Vince McMahon was explaining that you could call their 900 line and spend 99 cents to cast a vote for who you wanted to see face Foreign Fanatic Pierre (that’s PCO by today’s standards) on the 11/15 edition of Monday Night Raw. Your choices were of course All American Lex Luger, Marty Janetty, the 123 Kid, or Doink the Clown.

After a WrestleMania III backstage meeting with Hollywood film writer and director John Carpenter, Piper took one of those absences to play the lead man in Carpenter’s cult classic cautionary film They Live!
If you watch it with today’s cinematic standards in mind, it’s easy to understand why - the movie is slow, short on dialogue, long in sections, and I don’t think many would argue with me giving it the “cheesy” description.
After all . . . the whole concept of the movie is that Roddy Piper puts on a set of shades that reveals the upper class to be a bunch of aliens controlling the working class through subliminal messaging in advertising and television. Piper then goes on a crusade to free the middle class.
But while it’s all too easy to point out the faults I mentioned (slow, dialogue, long, cheesy), it’s also impossible to miss that the film is striving to be something more than a low rent movie that straddles the border of action and horror.

Wrestling by its very nature is a dishonest profession.
When you think about it, the job of referees, announcers, and wrestlers are attempting to fool the audience into believing that their performance is legitimate combat.
While in 2022, everyone is in on the act. Things were different back in the 1970’s - and the business was super well protected.
You’ve heard the stories of bad guys and good guys not being able to share the same locker room or be seen together in public.
It’s no surprise that dishonesty, trickery, and the whole idea of going into business for yourself would naturally grow from a business where everything was hush hush to begin with.
So we hear a fair amount about these little scandals and mysteries.
OK. . .so that sets what I’m about to tell you up nicely . . . as today we’re talking about the man who won the NWA World Championship three times . . . and all three times were against the wishes of the NWA governing body.

The history of women in the WWE is a little inconsistent. For fans that lived through the Golden Era of the WWF, you can’t go very long talking about that time without making reference to the lovely Miss Elizabeth. But that’s not the kind of participation in the world of wrestling that I mean.
Women have been competing in professional wrestling since before Mildred Burke became the 1st recognized World Champion in 1937. But getting anything that resembled the equal time or respect of their male counterparts was little more than a dream until fairly recently.

I know what you’re thinking. . .Ryan. . .the Daily Wrestling News Show usually tells a historical story about something that happened on this day . . .and it’s only October 27th. . .why are we talking about a show that took place on November 14th.
To that I remind you that we’re talking about wrestling . . . it isn't live sports. No no . . . the 31st edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event was taped . . . you guessed it . . . on October 27th 1992.
So what is it that I remember so vividly from this event in 1992.
I remember the British Bulldog Davey Boy Smith going for a superplex, but his back gave out and Shawn Michaels fell on top of him for the pinfall.

It’s late in 2001. The final WCW Nitro aired in late March. ECW took its’ final curtain call with a trashcan full of beer in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in January & official closed up shop in April. For most American wrestling fans, WWF was the only show in town.
As the cliché goes, however…“Nature abhors a vacuum.” So with plenty of talent looking for bookings, someone was bound to try to fill the void before long.
But what happens when a fledgling company has WWE aspirations & decent financing, but not much above Independent Scene production & booking experience?

It would be easier to list the things that went right with Halloween Havoc.
If you put aside the horrific Warrior v. Hogan rematch, the real problem was the fact that WCW botched the PPV timing.
Due to these timing issues, fans missed the end of the Hogan-Warrior match and the entirety of the main event WCW Championship match between Goldberg and DDP.

In the last quarter of 1999, the WWF was in firm control of the Monday Night Wars & WCW was flat out floundering. So a shake-up occurred that didn’t seem possible just a few months prior. A new creative regime would take over just before one of the bigger PPVs of the year.
So how did WCW’s 1st PPV under the new regime go?

As we get closer and closer to November . . . I continue to think about how many days next month will be spent talking about the Montreal Screwjob.
It’s an iconic event.
It’s been said that wrestling was changed forever that day.
Some say that the Attitude Era never would have happened. Maybe the Mr. McMahon character never happens.
I don’t know what would and wouldn’t happen without the events of that controversial night at the 1997 Survivor Series.
But I do know that if you go back one year prior to the Montreal Screwjob and you look at the events of October 21, 1996. . .everything about that 1997 day in Montreal makes no sense at all.
In fact, Bret Hart - the victim in the Montreal Screwjob story - would have no reason to leave WWF if you look at his status in late ‘96.
That’s because on this day in 1996, Bret Hitman Hart signed an unprecedented 20 year deal with the World Wrestling Federation.
. . . but the deal fell through in less than a year.

Wrestling has essentially been around for as long as there have been humans walking this earth. The history of sport can be traced back to 2 basic competitions. As long as there have been people, at some point those people have challenge each other to see either which of them can run faster or which of them can overpower the other in hand-to-hand combat.
Professional wrestling, as both sport & theater, has been around since the end of the 19th century, evolving from the cross pollination of the amateur wrestling seen in the “Modern Olympic Games” starting in the late 1800s & the performative nature of carnival strongman exhibitions.
With more than 100 years in the practice of telling the simple story of good vs. bad, professional wrestling is always trying to come up with new twists on how to serve up that age-old struggle in a way that is fresh.

I know this episode is airing in late October, but here’s a peek behind the curtain of how things are done on the Daily Wrestling News Show.
As I write this episode, it’s August 1st - and Mr. McMahon retired from WWE a little more than one week ago.
His successor as Chairperson of WWE is his daughter Stephanie McMahon.
So as I sit down to talk about No Mercy 2003 - when the McMahon’s explode. . .it’s a little weird to talk about winners and losers in the McMahon family.
But we must press on . . . and I’m sure this story will get far too close to reality for my comfort.

I often find myself railing against WWE’s booking of non-wrestlers at big PPV events. Of course, for the whole of my life, the man to blame for that has been Vincent Kennedy McMahon & his insatiable thirst for attention & respect outside the niche professional wrestling resided in for so long.
But secondary to Vince, there’s one person that sticks out as a major contributor at the very start of WWE’s cross over appeal. And while this person is very well known to any wrestling fan older than about 35, and to anyone who’s done some perusing of WWE’s extensive archive…the heft of this person’s contributions to the wrestling & entertainment we all love isn’t always so readily obvious.

As discussed back in August, sometimes special things can happen at house shows. Some of those things, like the Bret & Owen Hart Iron Man Matches, are never meant to see the light of day in terms of the storytelling of the on-air product.
But in the rarest of cases, a house show moment is so special that it later winds up as part of a home video release.

Oh this is going to be another fun wrestling mystery.
If you’ve been paying attention to this show each and every day, then you know that back on August 5th of 1996, a bunch of wrestling companies got together to form the J Crown. . .in some ways you would call that the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Championship.

The inaugural winner of the J Crown was the Great Sasuke who held the title for 67 days before dropping all 8 belts to The Ultimo Dragon on this day in 1996.
So Ultimo Dragon is the J Crown Champion as of October 11, 1996 and WCW has their Halloween Havoc PPV right around the corner.
The PPV is set to take place on October 27th (later this month) - and according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter dated October 21 “the original plan would have Ultimo Dragon defending the J Crown against Jushin Thunder Liger at Halloween Havoc.”

Wrestling fandom can be funny…hell, there are people who actually celebrate the careers of guys like X-Pac & the Miz. I don’t understand it, personally, but it happens.
