On today’s episode, we have Sydney’s alt-pop veteran, Sparrows. Corporeal and fantastical, Jess Nitties microdoses whimsy and manifests her internal worlds. Her music is a tapestry of sound design, weaving familiar pop elements with ornamental percussion. No stranger to the airwaves, she was awarded fbi’s Independent Artist of the Week in 2018. She makes her radio return in lieu of new music JUST around the corner. Jess - let’s get Out of the Box!
This episode was presented to you by Nick Hibbs and produced by Alex Kennedy. Out of the Box is recorded at the fbi station in Redfern, which is on unceded Gadigal Land. We pay our respects to Gadigal elders past and present and recognise the ongoing colonial violence committed across this country. Wherever you’re tuning in from in so-called Sydney, the land always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.

Today's guest is one of the most distinctive voices in hip hop today. For more than two decades, New York rapper Billy Woods has built a reputation for his vivid storytelling and thoughtful, densely layered political lyricism, which mirror his fiercely independent approach to making music. Following his sensational show at Manning Bar, we're so excited to welcome him to Out of the Box.

Deep diving into the pockets of music, fashion, and art, she identifies tastemakers, highlighting black art and sounds. Her artisanal commentary has solidified her as a trusted voice within the Melbourne art scene. Gigi joins us here today to chat about competing with the algorithm, her hopes and dreams for the future of art, and of course - music!

Today’s guest is one i’ve been trying to get on the show for almost a year, seriously, our conversation starts back in November. A DJ and producer who really questions the idea of “genre” by fluently floating between every different form of electronic music you can think of, from IDM, bass, pop, glitch, noise, hip-hop and putting them all on the same record or mix. Technically a Sydney based artist, question mark, for the past year, ealing has been living in Taiwan, performing and making new music. Having only just touched down in Sydney about a week ago, I'm so thrilled to finally have them on the show.

Making his grand return on Out of the Box, we have the ironclad king of Western Sydney, it’s SOLLYY! Since he was on last, he’s continued shaking up the rap scene with his euphonic beats and die-cast bars. Scribing tongue-in-cheek delinquency on the T1 line, he’s brought that kid-in-the-back of the class energy to the world stage. After leaving his heart out west with last years’ release, he’s here to chat about the star-studded new album, his creative process, and what he has to come.

Today’s guest is T Breezy, a Gamilaraay rapper from Inverell NSW. Coming onto the scene with his debut EP ‘2360’, which won album of the week honours here at fbi radio, T Breezy brought a harder, southern hip hop influenced style of trap which quickly set him apart from the rest of Australian hip-hop. A mainstay in the underground, his 2024 collaborative album ‘Souths Most Wanted’ with Walkerboy, showed us that 2360 was just a taste of what’s to come. He recently put out his 2nd EP, Traction, further refining that singular sound and putting his ambition on full display.

Put your mirrorshades on! Our guests today are the one and only industrial hip-hop trio clipping. Making their appearance on the scene back in 2009, they’ve been pushing the envelope ever since. Their sonics infuse afrofuturism, horrorcore, and sci-fi storytelling, as seen in their sibling concept albums, There Existed an Addiction to Blood, and Visions of Bodies being Burned. Their release from last year, Dead Channel Sky, once again raises the bar, adding glitch, EDM, and acid techno into the cauldron. Joining us ahead of their upcoming tour, and hitting our shores for the first time EVER, they’re here today please welcome Daveed and William from clipping.!

On the show today we have up-and-coming Sydney electronic duo - Bad Hoax! Both dancefloor and cry-in-the-car ready, their sound is effortlessly emotive. Alex’s somber siren vocals and Will’s thumping, dynamic production create an unfamiliar heaven. Trading the comforts of the studio with the duo’s car, and room in their apartment, a heaviness weighs on their newest singles, Not that Deep and Home. Alex and Will join us in the studio today - it’s time to get Out of the Box.

Every episode of OOTB is special, but today is a bit different… today is the release day of “double take recognition violence,” the second album from sydney producer and dj gi. This is gi’s follow up to thought makes music, one of the best albums of 2024, and nominated for record of the year at the 2024 smac awards, and with this, she picks up where she left off. Gi’s signature take on “idm,” is unmistakable, but evolved with double take recognition violence, putting more of a focus on atmosphere and less on the experimental drum and bass sounds, and the result is breathtaking. Gigi, who performs and releases electronic music as gi also fronts the punk band optic nerve, who last released angel numbers in 2023, another record that was nominated for record of the year at the fbi smac awards. Truly one of the most innovative and thoughtful artists in Sydney, i’m lucky to be joined by gigi on ootb today.

Today on Out of the Box, we have Morgan, Kate, and Lachlan from Melbourne dream pop band Acopia! While the definition of Acopia is a patient's inability to cope with activities of daily living, the band is anything but.

Joining us today is everyone’s favourite gentle giant, rapper and now, R&B aficionado, Tahkoe! A nominee at the 2024 fbi SMAC Awards for Next Best Thing, what you see is often what you get - tall and lanky bars delivered straight from the heart, often over lush rap beats.
Collaborating with the area’s finest, including emjaysoul, Station Hayds, and SOLLYY, he’s galvanised his image on the Western Sydney scene.
Most recently, Tahkoe has switched gears with his latest record ‘wayward.’ and even newer single, ‘FiNE LUViN’, exploring new territory. The album boasts neo-soul and alternative R&B influences through a more vulnerable than ever perspective, while the single fuses this new sound with his more familiar soul-rap.

We have a very special guest on the show today - it’s everybody’s favourite socialite, influencer, and stylist - Lynn Harries! We chat Sex and the City, where not to be seen in Sydney this summer, and of course – Lana Del Rey.
Living and breathing fashion, his work styling with brands such as Dinosaur Designs, have galvanised his impact on the Australian fashionscape.
Lynn has also made a name for himself commentating on life in the Eastern Suburbs. He dissects what makes Sydneysiders tick - whether it be an overpriced dining experience, or a new hole-in-the-wall dessert place you wait hours in line for.

We have a very special guest on the show today. He’s a Western Sydney rapper, producer, and filmmaker, and member of the Full Circle collective. Pushing the envelope with every release, his newest EP ‘The New Film Star’ came out a few days ago and has flipped the script once again.
Reading like a blockbuster film at the box office, it tells a tale of self-doubt and external prejudices as a mixed-race artist. In the process, he creates an expansive, signature sonic universe. Joining us in the studio today, is none other than Zion Garcia.

'Fairy Gig Mother' Frances Martin has cast an unmistakable figure in the crowd of countless shows in the Sydney live music scene for decades, supporting and spruiking independent musicians and providing an enveloping hug for all who need it.
But her own story is a compelling tale of defiance, survival and magic. Throughout her career in radio and live music, she played an integral role in forcing the inclusion of independent Australian artists on our recorded music charts - risking losing her job and standing her ground against major label figures as one of the few women working in the industry at that time.
In this episode of Out of The Box, Fran sat with Jaimee Taylor-Nielsen to reflect on family, grief, growing up against the backdrop of Australian counter-culture and civil rights, and the magic of live music - "it only happens once". Fran treats us to stories about her time with Joni Mitchell, Neil Finn, and shouts out the Australian artists for whom she provided a loving, supportive embrace in their early years as Fairy Gig Mother, including Julia Jacklin and Andy Golledge. We hear about finding a sense of belonging in music and film, and Fran weaves her magical life lessons throughout her song choices.

This is the last episode of Out of the Box for the year, so we’re looking back on some of the special moments from 2022.
Every conversation we had taught us something new about music, about our guests, about ourselves, and about the art of storytelling. We learned that there are a million ways to share our stories - it happens through the food we make, our creative pursuits, the way we build businesses, and the way we talk to each other.
So for today’s episode of Out of the Box, we're revisiting conversations with storytellers that floored us. It was really hard to whittle them down, but you’ll hear from a game designer, a rapper, a creative producer, a poet, and an artist.
HOLLY HAWKINS
Holly Hawkins is a game designer at Wargaming and a guest speaker at Powerhouse Late: Gaming. They speak on where their love for games comes from, what it means to pursue goals later in life, the complex relationship between gaming, gender, and access, and their recovery from perfectionism.
TASMAN KEITH
Tasman Keith is a Gumbaynggirr man and rapper from Bowraville who now calls Sydney home. He sat down with Mia ahead of his FBi SMACS Fest performance to talk through a life that’s seen the highest highs and lowest lows, often all at once. He speaks on his enduring optimism, a life spent making music, love, loss, and learning.
MAEVE MARSDEN
Independent artist and creative producer Maeve Marsden is a master storyteller. She speaks on her life in the arts, the necessary messiness of her 20s, queer stories and the way they’re shared, how to fist fruit, and her epic love story. Maeve sat down with Mia ahead of her appearance at All About Women at the Sydney Opera House.
ANDREW HULL
Andrew Hull is a writer, artist, poet and musician from Bourke in Far West NSW. He's also Mia's dad. He speaks the turning points in his life, and the different ways he has grown into his identity over time. Andrew's story is deeply rooted in his home on the Darling river, the Barkaa, and has been told through many creative pursuits, you can check them out here.
DYLIN HARDCASTLE
Dylin Hardcastle is an author, artist, screenwriter and scholar. Their name lives on the cover of the critically acclaimed ‘Running Like China: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted by Madness’ , and ‘Breathing Under Water’, and most recently, ‘Below Deck'. They’re also the co-creator, co-writer and co-director of the online series ‘Cloudy River’. Their story also spans the globe: In 2017, Dylin was an artist-in-residence with Chimu Adventures in Antarctica, and they’ve lived, studied, and created in Australia and the UK too.
Dylin told Mia about a life spent in and on oceans and seas (and the thousand’s of lives that have taken place there), rebuilding from trauma, and stories deposited in pockets of glacial ice.

Sara Mansour is a lawyer, poet, co-founder and director of Bankstown Poetry Slam. Sara uses her art and passion for justice to empower others through poetry.
Sara Mansour, the oldest of eight children, was born into a traditional Lebanese family. She would attend Arabic school each week, learning and memorising the Qu’ran. At the time it was unveiled, it was seen as a collection of poetry, which allowed Sara to feel reconnected with a part of herself when she started performing poetry.
