The Review Panel: Recent Episodes

artcritical

The Review Panel is a regular discussion forum founded and moderated by David Cohen, publisher and editor of the online magazine artcritical.com.

Each time Cohen is joined by three guests, who include leading American critics, as they debate the merits of current shows of contemporary art before a live audience.

This program has been hosted by Brooklyn Public Library/BPL Presents since 2016. It was hosted by the National Academy Museum from 2004-2016 while Review Panel Philadelphia was hosted by the the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 2012-17.

April 12th, with Lance Esplund, Kara Rooney and Robert Storr

Three Brooklyn-based critics join David Cohen at the podium April 12 for The Review Panel at Brooklyn Public Library in what should be another stormy, contentious evening of critical debate: Lance Esplund, Kara Rooney and Robert Storr. And as added spurs to liveliness, a radical feminist twist or two. Judith Braun, subject of a two-part (and two-borough) show at McKenzie Fine Art on the Lower East Side and Simuvac Projects in Greenpoint, was one of the original “Bad Girls” in Marcia Tucker’s thus titled 1994 show at the New Museum, while the title of Betty Tompkins’ show at the FLAG Art Foundation, “WOMEN Words, Phrases and Stories,” gives a fair flavor of the feistiness to expect there. Also prone to the prodding and probing of the panel, shows of Omer Fast at James Cohan and Molly Lowe at Pioneer Works.

March 8th, with Svetlana Alpers, Laurie Fendrich, David Salle

Who can keep up with David Salle? That he is a painter at the top of his form was evidenced by his solo show in New York last spring. But he is also wearing hats as a curator and critic these days. “Nice Weather,” a group show divided between the uptown and Chelsea premises of his dealers, Skarsdedt Gallery, brings together mostly new work by a generous spread of modern masters and emerging or under the radar mid-career and younger painters. His essay review of Moma’s Forever Now show in ArtNews added sharp focus to debates about that much discussed event. Now he makes his debut on The Review Panel March 8 at Brooklyn Public Library where he joins veteran panelist Svetlana Alpers and fellow first timer Laurie Fendrich as moderator David Cohen’s guests. The Review Panel decamped to Brooklyn after a decade in Manhattan last month. David Salle, ahead of the curve, moved to the borough 15 years ago.

February 9th, with Siri Hustvedt, Roberta Smith and Alexi Worth

The Review Panel has a new home: Brooklyn Public Library’s Dweck Cultural Center at 10 Grand Army Plaza.

As critic and biographer Blake Gopnik has said, “The Review Panel goes at it hammer and tongs.” Three critics join me, David Cohen, founder and moderator of the program, for a live public debate, looking typically at four carefully selected current solo shows of new work by contemporary artists. Audience members, many seeing the shows ahead of the evening, play a lively role in deliberations. As artist and critic Alexi Worth, a guest on our first Brooklyn panel and a longstanding audience member, wrote recently, “As print criticism shrinks, The Review Panel is ever more valuable, as a model, a magnet, and a proof that ‘serious’ can also mean ‘entertaining.’”

Joining Worth February 9 are a stalwart of The Review Panel and a newcomer: respectively, Roberta Smith, co-chief critic of The New York Times, and novelist Siri Hustvedt, author of The Blindfold, What I Loved and most recently The Blazing World. In a nice nod to our new hosts, the line-up of speakers and subjects reveals a healthy Brooklyn bias: Hustvedt and Worth, who shows at DC Moore Gallery, live in the Borough, while two of the three venues whose shows are up for discussion are in Red Hook and Bushwick.

Special thanks to recording engineer Isaac Derfel for defying the odds and saving the bulk of this month’s recording.

April 2014: Colleen Asper, Donald B. Kuspit and Joseph R. Wolin

“2014 Whitney Biennial” was the single focus of The Review Panel on April 4 at the National Academy Museum. Joining moderator David Cohen were his guests Colleen Asper, Donald Kuspit and Joseph Wolin. Wolin, who writes for ArtForum and Time Out New York among other publications, is a new member of the team; Asper and Kuspit are veterans – Kuspit, indeed, appearing earlier this season in the sister series, The Review Panel Philadelphia.

This year the Biennial, unusually, is divvied up, floor by floor, by curator, with three shows within the show organized by Stuart Comer (Chief Curator of Media and Performance Art at MoMA), Anthony Elms (Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia), and Michelle Grabner (artist and Professor in the Painting and Drawing Department at the School of the Art Institute, Chicago).
