Christian community is built on more than shared interests; it’s about sharing life in Christ. Let’s explore the early church’s example of living in deep, purposeful community. Through worship, breaking bread, and sharing resources, they cultivated connections that went well beyond the surface. We’ll explore how we can foster deeper connections in our church community, practicing forgiveness, encouragement, and accountability as we grow together in Christ.

Discussion guide:

Read and reflect on Acts 2:42-47, Ephesians 4:32, Colossians 3:13, Hebrews 10:24-25

  1. What can we learn from the early church’s way of building community that we can apply to our own church today?

  2. What are the main obstacles in modern life that prevent us from forming deeper, more meaningful bonds with others in our church community?

  3. How do forgiveness, grace, and vulnerability contribute to building authentic relationships in our church?

  4. What practices or habits can we adopt to make sure that we are encouraging and supporting one another regularly?

  5. How do small groups or intentional gatherings within the church help deepen relationships and build a sense of family?

Personal Challenge: Reach out to someone in our church community this week and offer an encouraging word, a prayer, or practical help. Look for opportunities to foster deeper connections with fellow believers.

Jesus often used the table as a place of connection, healing, and grace. Let’s focus on the significance of the table in Jesus’ ministry. It’s a place where barriers are broken, forgiveness is offered, and relationships are restored. As we reflect on Jesus’ encounters around the table, we’ll consider how we can use our tables—whether literal or figurative—as places where people can experience the transforming power of Jesus.

Discussion guide:

Read and reflect on Luke 7:36-50, Revelation 3:20, Acts 11:1-18

  1. Reflect on a time when you experienced deep connection with others around a meal. What made that experience meaningful?

  2. How does Jesus’ use of the table as a place for ministry challenge the way we use our tables and shared spaces today?

  3. In today’s world, what are some other shared spaces (apart from your dining room table) where you can invite people to experience an atmosphere of hospitality, grace and acceptance, like Jesus did?

  4. How can we be intentional about making our homes and other shared spaces to be places of spiritual growth and transformation?

  5. What does it mean to “invite Jesus to the table” in your daily life, and how can this change your approach to hospitality?

Personal Challenge: Host or plan a meal this week with the purpose of fostering deep connection. Be intentional about making the conversation Christ-centred, sharing stories of faith, and praying together.

Jesus modelled radical hospitality—welcoming sinners, strangers, and the marginalised. Let’s explore the heart of biblical hospitality: welcoming others as Christ has welcomed us. Through his example, we learn how opening our homes and hearts to others reflects the love of God. Hospitality isn’t just about entertaining friends; it’s about embracing strangers and showing them love, too. We’ll point out some barriers to hospitality in our own lives and talk about how we can practice it with intentionality.

Discussion guide:

Read and reflect on Romans 12:13, Hebrews 13:2, Matthew 25:40, Luke 10:25-37

  1. In what ways did Jesus’ hospitality go beyond what was socially expected in his time?

  2. How does the idea of hospitality extend beyond inviting people into your home? What other forms can it take?

  3. What makes it challenging to extend hospitality to those who are different from us or who make us uncomfortable?

  4. How does practicing hospitality reflect the good news of Jesus in everyday life?

  5. What steps can we take to make hospitality a consistent practice in our personal and church lives?

Personal Challenge: This week, identify one person or family—either a stranger or someone you don’t know well—and extend an invitation to share a meal, a coffee, or a conversation with them.

In times of trouble and uncertainty, the Bible offers unparalleled comfort and hope. We’ll explore how we can hold on to passages that remind us of God’s constant presence, his promises of renewal, and the hope we have in Christ. The Bible is also a powerful tool in spiritual warfare. It equips us to stand firm against the enemy’s schemes, resist temptation, overcome challenges, and stay grounded in God’s promises.

Discussion guideRead and reflect on 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, Romans 15:4, Ephesians 6:10-18, 2 Corinthians 10:3-51. How has the Bible provided comfort and hope in the most difficult times in your life? 2. What verses or passages bring you the most comfort, and how can you share them with others in need? 3. How has the Bible helped you in a spiritual battle? 4. How can the Bible equip you for spiritual battles in the future? The Bible is a diverse collection of writings, each with its own context, genre, and purpose. Understanding these elements is key to interpreting the Bible well. We’ll dive into different types of biblical literature—from wisdom poetry to apocalyptic visions—exploring how context and genre influence our understanding of the message. We’ll also talk about how our own perspectives shape the way we read the Bible and how we can approach it with greater clarity and depth.

You can get a copy of Brian’s slides here.

Discussion guide

Read and reflect on Proverbs 1:1-7 (Wisdom/Poetry), Isaiah 53 (Prophecy), Acts 2:1-21 (Historical), Ephesians 1 (Epistle), Revelation 1:1-20 (Apocalyptic)1. What differences did you notice in the passages given this week?2. Why do you think it’s important to understand the context in which the various parts of the Bible were written?3. Our background, experience and tradition all work as a lens on how we read the Bible. What lenses are you aware of that affect the way you read and understand the Bible?4. What are some ways you could better understand the author’s intent and the context of a particular passage in the Bible?Personal challenge: As part of your Bible reading this week, try reading a commentary on a verse, or googling the context behind a verse.

Talking to God is a simple practice that can feel difficult and complicated. Many people see prayer as a “Break in Case of Emergency” box – they only pray in those moments when nothing else is working. Others see it as a shopping list for life, only talking with God when they need something. For others it is a therapeutic habit, processing their life with an external Presence. These are just a few of the many ways people see prayer.

In Matthew 6 the disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. They are not asking what words to say or what the correct structure should be. They are good Jewish boys who know ‘what’ to pray. They are asking Jesus to teach them to pray like he does, from an intimate and powerful relationship with the Father. They want to experience transformative prayer. And so do we. We want to build a foundational prayer life, emulating Jesus’ continuous dialogue with his Father.

God created us for relationships. The people we choose to surround ourselves with are incredibly important, but in 2024 the social fabric of our church is thinner than ever. Many of us are isolated, lonely and disconnected, but we may not even be aware of how negatively this is affecting us.

It’s impossible to live the right life when you have the wrong friends. The Bible verse ‘bad company corrupts good character’ isn’t only for kids, it’s for all of us. While Jesus loved everyone unconditionally, he didn’t treat everyone equally. He prioritised his close friends, and he maintained boundaries with other people. How can we follow Jesus example and other wisdom from the Bible in friending and unfriending?

When we watch TV or scroll through social media it feels like everyone is chanting, “More! More! More!” More money, a bigger house, the trendiest clothes, the wildest adventures, etc. The message we get is that our happiness and security in life is grounded in what we can achieve, consume or own.

This month in the Transformation Trek we look at a practice from the life of Jesus that pushes against this message by declaring that it is better to give than to receive. The lives of Jesus’ followers are not marked by hoarding our resources but by sacrificially giving to help others. Let’s find joy in generosity and sacrifice, because it truly embodies the spirit of Christ within us.

In this final week we explore the widow’s offering and Paul’s teachings on cheerful and generous giving. Dive into why Jesus values the heart behind our giving more than the amount we give, and how our financial priorities reflect our understanding of generosity and sacrifice. Reflect on aligning our spending with God’s kingdom values and seek his guidance on using our resources to bless others. This week, consider how God wants you to use the resources he’s entrusted to you for his glory and the good of others.

‘Repentance’ is a complex idea. It can make us think about angry and urgent calls to turn our life around or risk fiery consequences. Or it can make us think about quick apologies after childish mistakes. True repentance is so much more than this. It is about heartfelt regret for straying from God’s path, accepting his forgiveness and being marked by a transformation of our heart, mind and life.

In Matthew chapters 6-10, one thing stands out about Jesus’ ministry more than any other thing. He healed people.

Miraculously, instantaneously, sometimes up close, sometimes at a distance, sometimes with a word, sometimes with a prayer, sometimes with a physical touch or action. Jesus healed people. All kinds of illnesses, disabilities, afflictions, oppressions. Jesus healed anyone, from anything and everything.

Why did he heal people? And what does that mean for you today? That’s what this message is about.

Temptation isn’t just about being tempted to do the wrong thing. Sometimes it’s about being tempted to do a normal thing in the wrong way.

And temptation isn’t always about being tempted to sin. Sometimes it’s about testing or proving something as valid.

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness the devil was trying to get him to do good, or normal, things but in a sinful way. Instead, Jesus stood up against the temptation and was proved worthy and valid as the Messiah, the Son of God.

What can we learn from Jesus about the temptations we face in life? How can we have strength to stand up against those temptations?

Rule of Life

The tool we are practicing as we explore abiding with Jesus is called a Rule of Life. It’s a guide consisting of boundaries, habits and rhythms. We commit to and explore these to flourish in our discipleship to Jesus.

You can find the full guide for creating your own Rule of Life here: https://thelakes.org.au/2024/02/16/create-a-rule-of-life/

A Rule of Life is like a trellis in a vineyard – it provides a helpful structure for the vines to grow up.

Saint Benedict from the 6th Century called the Rule of Life “a framework for freedom.

This is not a legalistic set of rules that are poor attempts to please God. This is about practice, not about performance, effort or earning. This is a way of stewarding our time, energy, and life well as worship in response to what Jesus has done and is doing in our lives.

“A rule offers creative boundaries within which God’s loving presence can be recognised and celebrated. It does not prescribe but invites, it does not force but guides, it does not threaten but warns, it does not rigidly confine but it keeps you moving in the right direction.” -Henri Nouwen

A Rule of Life is a ‘measure’; a way to measure what we take on, what we do with our time, energy and attention and of course a way to relentlessly pursue Jesus, allowing us to abide in him and follow him.

A Rule of Life can be incredibly helpful for an individual’s formation. However, they can also be powerful tools for small groups to explore. In fact, having a shared Rule of Life with others can be a game-changer.

You can find the full guide for creating your own Rule of Life here.

Group discussion guide for Sunday 18th February 2024

How have you been aware of abiding in Jesus in the past week?Read John 15:5-8 together again. What habits, practices, or rhythms of life do you already have that help you abide with Jesus?Discuss this quote from Henri Nouwen’s about a Rule of Life.“A rule offers creative boundaries within which God’s loving presence can be recognised and celebrated. It does not prescribe but invites, it does not force but guides, it does not threaten but warns, it does not rigidly confine but it keeps you moving in the right direction.”What resonates with you about this quote? How can a Rule of Life be a guide rather than a set of rigid rules?Give people time to start developing their own Rule of Life using the steps and guide provided.Share with each other some of your initial thoughts on life categories such as abiding with Jesus, relationships, work, church family, hospitality, health, digital discipleship, creativity, and building.Encourage each other to commit to practicing their drafted Rule of Life for the next few weeks. Discuss potential challenges and ways to support each other in this journey.Spend time praying for each other. As part of relentlessly pursing Jesus this year, we are introducing The Transformation Trek

The Transformation Trek is an exciting journey of discovery and growth in your faith. It is a series of practices and rhythms of life that will help you explore, grow, and connect with others on this journey with Jesus. We’ll be looking at Jesus’ character and teachings, aiming for alignment of heart, mind and action with his life.

Pastor Steve Gray at Burleigh Church of Christ has been developing and practicing The Transformation Trek for years. Other churches like ours have joined in along the way and we are grateful to Steve and Burleigh for offering these resources to us. You can find out more at https://www.transformationtrek.online

As part of making time for friendship this year, we are highlighting small groups

Walking The Transformation Trek together urges us to gather in smaller groups; intimate, trusted communities, which are a crucial element of discipleship. We encourage everyone to find a small community that can help them grow in their faith and connect with others on a deeper level.

We can help you find, or form, a small group where you can share your struggles and victories, ask questions, and grow in your faith alongside others. We believe that this is where transformation can truly take hold and we can’t wait to see how God will work in and through your life as you journey with us.

The world screams for our attention, time, and energy. Tech notifies us, beeps at us, even tells us it misses us. Advertising wants to make us feel guilty, not enough, not complete, and the media runs on fear and anxiety. The world wants to form us into what it wants us to be. They have a plan for our discipleship. They are intentional and very good at it.

It is not a question of whether we are disciples. The answer is, “Yes, everyone is a disciple.” The question is, “Who are we disciples of?”

The invitation to abide comes straight from Jesus. He invites us to remain in him and he in us. To allow him to shape us, form us, mould us in his ways, truth, and towards a life of purpose and peace.

Group discussion guide for Sunday 11th February 2024

  1. Share a moment from the past week when you felt a need to pause and simply abide in Jesus. What did that look like for you?

  2. Read John 15:5-8 together

  3. What does it mean to remain in Jesus, and how does it connect with producing fruit?

  4. How does abiding in Jesus impact your daily life, decisions, and relationships? Can you share about a time when intentionally abiding in Jesus brought about positive transformation?

  5. Take turns with each person reading one of these other passages:

 Matthew 4:19
2 Peter 1:5-10
 Romans 12:2
 2 John 1:9
 Philippians 4:8
 Psalm 119:103-106

How do these verses complement the idea of abiding in Jesus? Share any insights and personal reflections.

  6. Spend time praying for each other.

Our faith isn’t perfect. We haven’t achieved everything. We are still a work in progress. Rather than resting on the past or holding on to what we have, let’s put everything on the line again for Jesus.

Brothers and sisters, as I said, I know I have not arrived; but there’s one thing I am doing: I’m leaving my old life behind, putting everything on the line for this mission.Philippians 3:13 (The Voice)

Our mission statement is still: Love people and invite them to join us in a growing relationship with Jesus. We believe God wants us to focus on the second half of the statement this year: “us, in a growing relationship with Jesus.”

Relentlessly pursue Jesus

This year we are going to lean more into a growing relationship with Jesus.

No matter how old we are, or how long we’ve walked with Jesus, he has more growth he wants for us. How can we make sure our spiritual growth really is life-long? In 2024 we’ll explore some habits, practices and rhythms of life to invest in our relationship with him.

Along the way we don’t want to lose sight of opportunities to invite others to join. We’ll be ready to welcome people with warm hospitality and to introduce them to Jesus.

Make time for friendship

This year we are going to spend more time together, building healthy relationships.

The social fabric of our church is thinner than ever before. People are isolated, lonely and disconnected, but many aren’t even aware of this, or how negatively it is affecting them. In 2024 we want to fight the trend towards loneliness by weaving ourselves together into healthy friendships and communities.

Some of the challenges in this will be creating time, lowering walls we’ve put up to people and being willing to walk with the wounded.

While some of our sermons, services and programs will help us move forward in these areas, this isn’t something ‘the church’ can do for you. Relentlessly pursuing Jesus and making time for friendship is something we all need to take seriously and take steps towards in our everyday lives.

Will you go all in this year? All in on Jesus and all in on community?

As part of relentlessly pursing Jesus, we are introducing The Transformation Trek

After hearing about our church’s focus for the year, what’s one thing you’re looking forward to?Read and reflect on Philippians 3:13. Here it is in The Voice translation, and you may like to compare it with another translation of the Bible,“Brothers and sisters, as I said, I know I have not arrived; but there’s one thing I am doing: I’m leaving my old life behind, putting everything on the line for this mission.”What does putting everything on the line for Jesus mean to you personally?Share about a time in your life that you remember growing a lot in your relationship with Jesus. What habits, practices, or rhythms of life do you already have that help you relentlessly pursue Jesus? When have you felt most connected to church community? How can you create time for friendship in your busy life? As we kick off the Advent series, we’ll explore the role of John the Baptist in preparing the way for Jesus. Just as John paved the path for Christ’s arrival, we’ll explore how we can prepare our hearts to receive the King. What does it mean for us to be modern-day John the Baptists, clearing away distractions and making room for the presence of Jesus in our lives?

Join us in December for a transformative journey through the Christmas story. In this four-part series we will explore the rich themes of expectation, anticipation, and fulfilment that surround the coming King. Each week we’ll uncover how meaningful Jesus’ birth still is today, and be challenged to shape our whole lives around him again.

Philippians 4.

The Apostle Paul writes his letter to the Philippians from prison. And even thought there is a lot he could complain about, his life and letter are full of joy. Philippians is the most encouraging and joyful letter in the whole Bible. Paul ’s struggles have become his greatest teachers. He has learned to depend on the one who gives him strength. He has learned to have joy and contentment, no matter what he is facing. And, most of all, he has learnt to model his life after the example, teaching and love of Jesus Christ.

In this series we’ll learn how we can have our attitudes and entire lives transformed by Jesus. No matter what you are facing, no matter what pressure you’re under, no matter how divided your loyalties are, you’ll be encouraged, inspired and challenged to live for Christ. Join us on Sundays for this five week series and journal along as we read Philippians together.

In this series we invite you to take a ’S.O.A.P.’ journal and dig deeper into Philippians during the week. SOAP is a simple way of writing down a ‘Scripture’ that stands out to you from the passage, an ‘Observation’ of what God is saying to you from that passage, an ‘Application’ of how you can apply it today and a ‘Prayer’ asking God to help you use what you’ve learned. You can find a digital journal and group discussion questions here: https://thelakes.org.au/2023/10/06/philippians-series-2023/

The third thing might be the toughest to grasp—we’ll all face judgment, but who does the judging, and what will we be judged on? Your afterlife is dependent on the life you live now. From the earliest days the Restoration Movement saw equality and autonomy between Christians and between leadership roles. The ‘priesthood of all believers’ became a mark of Churches of Christ, in stark contrast to other movements that emphasised clear hierarchies with special roles and privileges. The independence of churches also became a distinguishing feature, in contrast to denominational control in other movements. Two of the more bizarre stories from the early days of Churches of Christ are connected to one of the founders, Barton Stone. Stone was a young Presbyterian minister who left behind the divisions of denominations to help launch the Restoration Movement. As Churches of Christ sought to restore the church to its New Testament origins they removed many manmade barriers to faith. They had a serious devotion to the Bible and did their best to remove any emphasis on other books or on manmade creeds. As Churches of Christ sought to restore the church to its New Testament origins, they focused on practices of practical care and communion. A Sabbath day of rest is a gift from God to humanity.Do you treat it like a blessing or a burden?

Often we are so focused on honouring God by following rules that we miss God’s real, deeper purpose in giving the Sabbath.

Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.” -Mark 2:27

The best way to honour God with the Sabbath is using his gift in a way that blesses you. Because that was always God’s intention.

Sabbath = rest. Here are 4 other words to help you practice Sabbath in a way that blesses you. * Control (let go of it) * Worship (do it) * Fun (have it) * Freedom (explore it)

In a world that is insanely burned out, Sabbath is a desperately needed gift. God knew you couldn’t thrive without it, and Jesus taught us how to make use of it in ways that bless us.

In Mark 7 Jesus challenged the Pharisees about their empty rituals and pointless religion. We can do all the right things and say all the right things, and those things are good. But Jesus is asking us to check our motives.

Often we go through the motions of faith, but our hearts aren’t in it. It ends up being lip service only. We can’t just do things to earn browny points with God because that’s not what faith is about. And there are no brownie points anyway. God wants our hearts first and foremost, not the things we do.

Ask yourself: “What am I doing that is just lip service to God?” “How can I change my heart so I am truly loving God and those around me as I practice my faith?”

If you were at the foot of the cross on Good Friday, there was nothing good about the day at all. The first Good Friday wasn’t just the death of Jesus. It felt like the death of hope and the death of life itself.

And while it’s impossible for us to really understand what the first Good Friday was like for the disciples, we can understand a bit because we also have times in our lives when it seems like sin and death and failure completely overwhelm us.

These times help us understand what it would have felt like to watch all of your hopes be nailed to a cross. And they also help us understand the reason why Jesus had to die.

Good Friday is a vital part of the story. A necessary part. In dying, Jesus took on death, sin, failure, hopelessness, brokenness, evil, hurt, grief and loss. All of the stuff that overwhelms us and threatens to destroy us.

Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit. (1 Peter 3:18 NLT)

Jesus took on sin – all of it – in the whole world, when he died on the cross. So that he could bring you safely home to God. That makes Friday incredibly GOOD!

What if Jesus was coming back today? What would you want to do differently if you knew he’d be here in just a few hours?

In Romans 13 Paul encourages us to not live as if it was nighttime, as people of darkness. Instead he says we should live as people of the daytime, as people of light.

What personal things would you add under each of these headings from Romans 13 & 14 about how to live in the light?

  1. Respect authority (Romans 13:1)

  2. Give what is owed (Romans 13:7, 1 John 4:11)

  3. Love others (Romans 13:8-10)

  4. Live in the light (Romans 13:12)

In chapter 12 of Romans, Paul makes a turning point from shifting our THINKING about God and each other, to shifting our BEHAVIOUR towards God and towards each other.

1 Worship God, with everything

2 Have humility, depend on each other

3 Serve each other, with God’s help

4 Don’t just pretend to love

To help guide your reading, journalling and discussing this week, Geoff also shared these tips on some of the big questions Paul raises in chapter 11 of Romans.

Do we choose God or does God choose us?

  1. This section is written to help Jews & Gentiles in the first century get along with each other.2. Don’t make conclusions about God without considering other passages and most importantly the life and teaching of Jesus – who is the full expression of God.3. The most important thing is to not be proud about ourselves.‘I want you to understand this mystery, dear brothers and sisters, so that you will not feel proud about yourselves.’ Romans 11:25

What about the nation-state of Israel today?

  1. This section is written to help Jews & Gentiles in the first century get along with each other.2. At the very least Jewish people must be equally valued and loved.3. This may not be a problem to solve, but a mystery to hold.‘Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! For who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to give him advice?’ Romans 11:33-34

What is the Gospel (Good News) about Jesus that we must hear and have faith in? We can’t get to God, so God came to us. Jesus restores our relationship with God because we can’t do it by ourselves.

The next question is often , ‘how?’ How does Jesus do this? The answer to the ‘how’ question is a wide variety of ‘atonement theories’ that we should explore and hold to, but which we don’t have to agree on.

The Gospel: Jesus restores your relationship with God

Atonement theories:1. Victory: Jesus is victorious over sin and death.2. Moral Influence: Jesus is our example and inspiration of sacrificial love.3. Satisfaction: Jesus paid our debt, satisfying God’s justice.4. Penal Substitution: Jesus took our punishment from God and died in our place.5. Governmental: Jesus paid a penalty for sin and this demonstrates God’s justice.6. Ransom: Jesus paid the ransom to free us and restore us to God.

There is no shame in following Jesus because he will never let you down. Accepting God’s grace is for everyone. I need him as much as you do. The point of Paul pointing out God’s judgement about sin is not to convict the obvious sinners, but to get us off our high horses of thinking we are better than others.

In this series we invite you to take a ’S.O.A.P.’ journal and dig deeper into Romans during the week. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. God chose to send his one and only Son in an act of sacrificial love. Today we still benefit from this gift because Jesus grew up to show the ultimate act of love on the cross. We can give each other the gift of sacrificial love instead of selfishness.

At Christmas time we often exchange gifts that don’t last. They are eaten up, worn out and used, sometimes even before the end of Christmas Day. In the first Christmas story we discover gifts that keep on giving. Not the gold, frankincense and myrrh, but other actions and attitudes that resound through the centuries. The shepherds gave the gift of curiosity, Mary and Joseph gave the gift of courage and God gave the gift of love in sending his Son.

This Christmas let’s give thanks for these gifts that keep on giving, even to our benefit today. Let’s also challenge each other about how we can give curiosity, courage and love for the sake of the people in our lives.

James shows us that our struggles often come from our own selfish nature. God doesn’t tempt us but he has made a plan to rescue us. Jesus’ work on the cross enables us to stand against temptation. We often think of suffering as something that happens to stop God’s good plans for us, but the beginning of the book of James paints suffering as part of Gods redemption plan. How can our painful trials produce growth within us and how can trust in God enable us to make it through these difficult times? Why is life so hard at the moment? Why can’t it be easier? In the New Testament book of James we find incredible wisdom The post When you suffer (When life gets tough) appeared first on The Lakes Church Cairns.

When we read the Old Testament it can seem like God is a completely different person – like he changed his personality when Jesus arrived. But the apostles and teachers of the early church relied on the Old Testament to understand God and to understand Jesus as the Messiah. When Jesus came he wasn’t what most people were expecting. Even today Jesus isn’t the kind of Messiah that we might expect. He didn’t fight or win or become powerful, but instead died as a criminal. The apostles and teachers in the early church looked back at the Old Testament and were able to better understand Jesus as God’s promised Messiah. Over the past five weeks, we have been learning about building relationships. This week to wrap it all up, we focus on our relationship with God, taking a look at how God’s design for the best relationships with each other is modelled after how he desires to relate to us.

Our lives are full of relationships – best friends, spouses, exes, neighbours, co-workers – and those relationships can be complicated. Relationships are messy, and love can be hard. So how do we have good ones? And get over bad ones? During this series, we’ll talk about how to develop strong and thriving relationships in every area of your life.

Crazy Stupid Love comes with a discussion guide for small groups to use each week. This series was inspired by Pastor Gene Appel at Eastside Christian Church in Los Angeles.

You can join us in-person next Sunday and connect with us anytime at https://www.thelakes.church

DISCUSSION GUIDE

When in your life have you felt your relationship with God be the strongest?

We will often feel something in us that will spur is into wanting to get to KNOW God. Can you describe such an experience in your own life?

In John 14:5-6, Jesus explained that he is “The Way” to God; to know God and get close to him is through Jesus. Have you ever felt like Thomas, doubting or wondering if you know the way?

Later on, Thomas stated that he wouldn’t believe or TRUST that Jesus was back until he saw and felt it for himself. And Jesus delivered on that, meeting Thomas where he was at to get him to trust Jesus at his word. Have you ever needed, like Thomas did, just a little bit more proof from Jesus to trust in him?

There is a difference between trusting and relying on God. Relying on God is a deeper level of the relationship. When Jesus returned to the disciples after rising again, he met with them and showed them, allowing Thomas to touch his hands. Jesus was demonstrating to Thomas, you cannot only trust me, but you can also RELY on me that what I say will come to pass. You can put your faith in me. Have you had experiences where you felt God was making himself known to you, giving you that proof you can rely on him?

Once Jesus met Thomas where he was at and went the extra mile to show Thomas that Jesus is who he claimed to be the whole time, Thomas COMMITTED himself to Jesus. It was undeniable who Jesus truly is. Have someone read Romans 10:9. Have you ever taken the next step to commit yourself to Jesus?

When we have put our faith in the cross and the work Jesus completed, we physically (TOUCH) express our faith through baptism. The physical act says, “I have committed my life to following Jesus.”

APPLICATION

Have you seen yourself engage in each area of the R.A.M. (Relationship Attachment Model) with God? Spend a few minutes thinking through each step, assessing where you are in relation to God.

Do you KNOW God?Do you TRUST God?Do you RELY on God?Have you COMMITTED to God?Have you engaged in the TOUCH of baptism?

PRAYER

Break into groups of 2-3 and pray that God would reveal which of the steps you need to strengthen to be able to progress to the next step. If you have a step that God is calling you to engage more in, pray about that and ask him to meet you where you are at. Maybe talk to someone in your group about ideas on how to grow in those areas.

There is a life-giving power that happens with human touch. Of course, we are talking about healthy, appropriate touching. Whether it is a simple high-five, a pat on the arm, a hug, a kiss, or sexual intimacy, it affects us. God wired us this way. There is also a bond-building power to sexual touch.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

What is your favourite memory of your parents? Why?

Can you give an example of being affected in a positive way by a friendly (non-sexual) touch?

Jesus engaged in the power of life-giving touch with his disciples. The Apostle Paul instructed believers to greet each other with a “holy kiss” to create an atmosphere of warmth and welcome. In this modern time, we don’t engage in “holy kisses,” but do you think it is important to have welcomers to greet people at The Lakes Church either by a hug or a handshake? Why?

There is a bond-building power from sexual touch. Human sexuality is a gift from God. Have someone read Genesis 1:27-29. God not only created sex and commanded it, but also created in us the ability and desire to engage in it. That makes our sexuality good, not evil. Does that statement challenge any previous opinions you’ve had or observed of sex or sexuality?

The Bible tells us that there should be boundaries involved with engaging in sex. Read Hebrews 13:4 and 1 Corinthians 16:16-18. Boundaries are important because they keep your body and soul protected. God did this to save us from pain and consequences as time goes on. What do you think or feel about these boundaries?

Some important tips for married couples:

It can be better.Build an atmosphere of affection.Increase your commitment to communication.Maintain an attitude of giving.

If you are married, what ideas along these lines come to mind that you can you do to make your relationship better?

If the Touch scale on the R.A.M chart is low in your marriage, can you think of what you and your spouse need to work on regarding the other scales that would invite improvement in this one?

APPLICATION

God created physical touch to be life-giving and bond-building between people at the right time. Whether it’s between family members, friends, acquaintances, people you are meeting for the first time — is there a relationship you are involved in where you can appropriately show more life-giving touch to create a space of welcome and warmth?

PRAYER

Break into groups of 2-3 and pray that God would reveal any relationships where you need to set some boundaries. Or for God to open your heart to be more warm and comforting to friends when the time is right to share some caring touch. Pray for healing and cleansing for all who might be seeking it in this area of life.

A theme that is prevalent in our culture is “life is all about you…you are the centre of the universe.” As a result, the idea of dying to myself, having the “same mindset as Jesus” and being totally committed to another person and his or her wellbeing is likely to be perplexing and difficult for us. In every relationship we have a choice. Love is a verb; to commit is an action you choose to do.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

Who do you consider to be a close friend and why?

Have someone read Philippians 2:3-4. Would your current relationships look different if you were to approach your relationships with this mindset?

The word commit is used in the Bible as an active word. It is continual; not a one-time “I’m all in” sort of thing. The meaning implies we continue getting to know the other person. In an age of social media and superficial connections, it is easy to forget that deep friendships and great marriages take work and time. Share the greatest barrier you are currently facing that keeps you from fully investing in your relationships.

Have someone read Proverbs 20:6. Beth Moore said, “Faithfulness is resting in God’s certainty, persuaded by his honesty, trusting in his reality, being won over by his sincerity, being sure that he’s sure, and believing he’s worth believing.” Is there a place or relationship in your life where you feel you need to be more faithful or loyal?

Have someone read Psalm 89:1-2, 8. The foundation of faithfulness is our relationship with God. Are we faithful in our relationship with Him, investing our time to know him and learn what the scriptures tell us his will is? How about our other relationships? Share how you see the correlation of your current relationship with God with how your human relationships are going.

Faithfulness is persisting even when feel like we want to quit. Mature, Spirit-led people live by their commitments, not their emotions. This is different from the motto of going with how you feel in the moment. Emotions come and go. They can be valuable as a tool, an indicator of what’s going on that needs attention, but that is not the same as letting your emotions rule your decisions. Faithfulness is intentional persisting, doing the right thing, even when you don’t feel like it. Maybe you have overcommitted, but the fact is you made those commitments. Do you recognise patterns in your life where in challenging moments, you want to quit or bail? Talk about a choice or change you could make in your current situation to avoid those patterns kicking in.

Have someone read James 1:3-4. It is those moments — when you’re in those pressure situations where you feel like quitting — that the Holy Spirit can do His best work in perfecting faithfulness in your character. Share a time when you experienced God meeting you in the midst of a situation when you turned to Him for help, choosing to keep moving forward and persisting.

If you’re comfortable doing so, share a time when someone broke a significant promise to you. How do you restore the capacity to trust after trust has been shattered?

Have someone read Proverbs 20:7. Where do you need to apply this principle in your life?

APPLICATION

Share where you need to commit. Spend time this week thinking over the following questions:

Do you show up?Do you keep your promises? Is your word good? Can people trust what you say?Can your friend trust you?Do your parents trust what you’re telling them? Can your spouse, your family count on you?Do your kids know that you are absolutely committed to them? Can your kids ‘take your word to the bank’?

PRAYER

Break into groups of 2-3 and pray that God would give you the courage to honestly look at your life and relationships. Pray that you would choose to commit, looking to and trusting God to help you as you move forward.

God created people to be interdependent – relying on each other. We can discover how God has shaped us and how we can work together to make a difference in the world.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

What’s the biggest risk you’ve taken?

Have someone read Romans 12:5. In a life of extreme independence, this passage goes against what culture tells us. It seems as though we are created to be in community, especially with other believers. Is there a time when you’ve experienced this kind of connection to another believer?

You’ll only find God’s purpose for your life through dependence on him and healthy interdependence with others. God created us to be in relationship and togetherness with him and others around us to help us find our place in this world. Even Jesus, creator of the universe, displayed the importance of letting people in and relying on others. Do you have a few people in your life whom you have created healthy relationship and togetherness with? How did that connection become so strong?

Read 1 Corinthians 12:12-13. This passage shares that God has fitted us together to rely on each other. It gives us an insight into God’s intention for his church: that it would be a place of unity and where people would be able to be used according to their gifts and abilities. If you know how God has shaped you, are you currently serving in a place to be used and help further the Kingdom of God? If you don’t know how God has shaped you yet, we encourage you to find out! Conversation with your small group or with a pastor will help. You can also see the teams we have around our church at www.thelakes.church/team

Read Ecclesiastes 4:10. Whether you’re married or single, this passage applies to everyone. If you’re married, do some reflection and try to identify if there is a healthy amount of reliance between the two of you. If you’re single, think of your friendships and reflect and identify a few people whom you can rely on no matter what. We need to learn to rely and be reliable ourselves because, as we know, relationships are two-way streets.

APPLICATION

Look at the circle of people you have included in your life; do you think you can rely on them when the going gets tough? Do they challenge you and make you a better person? If you don’t have those people, start looking to where you might be able to find them.

PRAYER

Break into groups of 2-3 and pray that God would help and show you how to build a level of trust in your relationships to where you can learn to rely on them. And if you are struggling with loneliness, pray that God would deliver you by bringing people into your life with whom you could build godly relationships.

Learning who we can trust is an important skill to develop. Learning how to build trust and restore trust is even more important.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

How did you learn the most important lesson in your life?

Benjamin Franklin said, “Before marriage, keep your eyes wide open; but afterwards, half shut.” Is there a relationship that you can think of where during the first few months, you were totally “lovestruck” and were blind to all of the “red flags”? What were the red flags, and how did you come to notice them?

Have someone read Proverbs 25:14. If there’s a person in your life that talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk, that’s a red flag, and that person probably isn’t too trustworthy. A person’s character is important to examine when building relationships. Are they a man or woman of their word? This is when it’s important to have open eyes, so we can keep a lookout for red flags. Is there a relationship you need to open or reopen your eyes to?

Half of all relationships end in the first 90 days. Why? Because they find out some new information about this person that forces them to take a second look. Investing in the three T’s (talking and togetherness over time) is important to learn a person’s character and get to know them to be able to begin to build trust.

Have someone read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. Once we take the next step and trust people, we have to remind ourselves, they’re human just like me. This means they aren’t perfect and will eventually mess up. Paul wrote this passage to show how to sustain trust. Because once we have trusted and built that love, it will prompt a deeper trust, forgiveness and healing. Trust feelings grow out of the qualities you choose to focus on. So, if you are focusing on all the shortcomings and weaknesses of the other person, that is all you will see, and you will begin to lose trust. Is there a relationship in your life where you need to reposition your perspective and put the focus on the other person’s strengths rather than their weaknesses?

When rebuilding trust that has been broken, we need to be quick to forgive but slow to trust. Have someone read Ephesians 4:32. Jesus is the perfect example of forgiveness, by becoming the ultimate sacrifice for me and you. Share this reminder with your group: – Forgiveness is past oriented… Trust is future oriented. – Forgiveness means letting go… Trust means holding on. – Forgiveness is undeserved… Trust is earned.

Let your trust be seasoned with grace. This means that when someone lets us down, we don’t immediately write them off; we approach with grace and understanding. Depending on their response, it’ll give you more insight if they’re ready to be trusted again. Little by little you will see the trust begin to be rebuilt. Is there someone in your life you need to forgive? Or is there someone God is calling you to slow your trust with?

APPLICATION

What relationship is God calling you to either slow your trust and get to know this person better, refocus your view of someone, or extend some forgiveness and grace?

PRAYER

Break into groups of 2-3 and pray that God would help you in your relationships by opening your eyes to what level of trust you are in and where you may need to slow down and get to know another better, refocus and prioritise the good, or forgive.

We need to take the time to get to know someone before we trust them. Our relationship with God is also like that. For us to wholeheartedly trust him, we need to know him.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

What is the funniest, craziest advice on relationships you have been given? Have someone read Philippians 2:5-8.

Why is it so important to our relationships to have the same mindset as Jesus?

Have someone read Psalm 139. This week we talked about the need to know someone before we trust them. Our relationship with God is also like that. For us to wholeheartedly trust him, we need to know him.

Tim Keller said, “To be loved but not know is comforting but superficial. To be known and not loved is our greatest fear. But to be fully known and truly loved is, well, a lot like being loved by God. It is what we need more than anything.”

Share a time in your life that relied on someone, putting your trust in them before you knew them. What was the outcome?

Have someone read 1 Samuel 16:7. If we want to grow in our relationships, we’ve got to know them. Time is the only way we can discover someone’s character, integrity, spiritual commitment, and heart. To get to know someone well enough to see these traits, we need to invest the time and say no to the distractions. Share what do you need to say no to right now to strengthen relationships in your life?

Have someone read Matthew 25:31-40. The second step to knowing someone is to act on what you know. If you want to be like Jesus, you need to act like him. Identify a step or area to work on in a relationship in your life. What action would make a difference?

Have someone read Ephesians 3:19. The last step to knowing someone is to know where your identity comes from. God desires you to know him deeply and intimately. Our spiritual growth happens within us and influences our relationship. What actions can you take to grow in your relationship with God?

APPLICATION

What relationship is God calling you to develop and strengthen?

PRAYER

Break into groups of 2-3 and pray that God would help you to love the people in your life and honour them in your words and actions this week.

We live in a world that has always been shaped by stories. Jesus knew this, and told life-giving stories that contained deep truths. In this series we’ll explore how these parables shine a light on God’s character, change our perspective, and give us practical direction.

The religious people were highly critical that Jesus was spending his time with the people they called ‘sinnners’, and so Jesus responded with two stories. We recognise that those who are lost, are those who are separated from their relationship with God, and this can happen for many reasons. But whatever the reason, Jesus sees their value and wants everyone to know that the lost are worth the effort.

The Parable of the Unjust Judge has something to say to us about prayer and how we approach God.  Is God like the judge and are we like the widow or is there something else going on?  We’ll explore ideas of prayer, persistence and justice as we unpack this parable together and discover that we can keep praying and never give up.

What is God’s vision for our church? After several months of exploring this question we are ready to move ahead with clarity and purpose. In this series we will unpack our vision: “to be a church that is devoted to lifelong growth, healthy relationships, warm hospitality, walking with the wounded and introducing people to Jesus.” In each message we’ll explore the biblical basis for this vision statement and we’ll invite people to consider what this means for them and for our church community as we pursue God’s future together.

Introducing people to Jesus

We introduce people to Jesus by being a church that welcomes those with no church background or who have become disconnected from church. We remove barriers and base our lives on the teaching of Jesus and the New Testament. We invite people to give our church community a try, confident that they can encounter Jesus with us. We are persistent and expectant in prayer for people who don’t know Jesus and give clear invitations for them to follow him.

If you’d like to respond by giving to the vision God has given us, you can do that at www.thelakes.church/give

The disciples would have known the religious routine of prayer, yet they asked Jesus to teach them. They saw in him something that they’d never experienced before. And they wanted it.
