More than 36 million adults in America can not read or write at the most basic level. More than 60 million lack basic math skills necessary to work a cash register or understand a bus schedule. Every year , one in three young adults drop out of high school. Nearly half of the U.S. workforce today, approximately 52 million adults, has only a high school education or less, while 25 million workers aged 18 to 64 lack even a high school diploma or GED.
This is an important conversation with Ryan Breisch. Adult Education is needed NOW.
The Literacy Council of Berks County is taking part of the movement of sharing good things to read for the residents of Berks County by building a Bird House Little Free Library right at the Literacy Council. Take a book - share it - return it. This Little Free Library project is inspiring children to foster their love of reading! Listen as Ryan talks about the importance of the Little Free Library.
ESL student - Hong Lin has been with the Literacy Council for 2 years. She has been in the U.S. for 10 years and believes that she needs to learn English for her children as well as building her own confidence and sense of independence! The Literacy Council is doing great work that matters!
Thao Huynh has only been in the United States for 10 months! She is an aspiring Interpreter and is learning English as an ESL student with the Literacy Council!
Ryan talks to Lourdes, an ESL student, about her reasons for wanting and needing to learn English. She has been in the U.S. for seven years and has spent one year with the Literacy Council - doing great work.
