The Beast is back! This time it’s GenCon 2025, a 72,000 attendee roleplaying game convention held annually in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Beast and Jason were on staff at the R Talsorian booth, helping to sell Cyberpunk RED and getting Mike Pondsmith to meetings with other RPG companies. It was a fun six days and while not much GIJoe’ing happened, it was still a blast.

Mark Gerwig, of Mark2Design, is designing and printing the entire custom class kit and Brian Sauer, of Codename Iowa (ARMOR and Assembly Required) is crafting a beautiful Retro Cardback for the custom class.
These three all return to Order of Battle to talk with Joel and Jason about JE Russell’s (Alyosha) run as the JoeCon/JoeFest custom class master, collaborating with each other, Ed, and others to bring ideas to life. And, as usual for these three, chaos reigns and the conversation goes all over the place, including friendly jabs.

It’s a lovely conversation that digs into the process of being an archivist, building relationships, and bringing out all these production level details.

Josh Blaylock joined Roger and Josh of After Action Report at JoeFest 2023! It was his first time at a Joe specific show since approximately 2008. Roger, Josh, and Josh Blaylock all took time to sit down with Jason and record the traditional JoeFest/AAR conversation.
Josh Blaylock is the founder of Devil’s Due Publishing. He brought the GIJoe comic back in the early 2000’s, including a Larry Hama title. His work helped continue the first generation of GIJoe comic kids, of which he was one, and introduce GIJoe to a new generation. It was a joy for Jason to meet him and for everyone at JoeFest to see him back in the community.
Roger and Josh had a lot to celebrate. Command Files was released from Kickstarter purgatory and funded! They are already working on the International and Merchandise issues. And the Newsstand Edition of After Action Report vol 1 kickstarter is already funded but still has 23 days left to go.
The boys all recorded in an out of the way hallway and outside by the pool before heading back in to be social until 3 in the morning. JoeFest is just like that.

Order of Battle Podcast special episode Operation Recall - Lilith
Back in December, Jason and Ian Stoops sat down to discuss a 60’s Joe scar totting paratrooper named Lilith. She was wave 4 figure 3 in the Operation Recall campaign and funded during the initial phase over the summer. Ian’s on the younger side of our community but with no Dark Age, he’s been collecting since playing.
He and Jason talk about being a broad collector of GIJoe, 1964 to current and the Action Man line. The genesis of Lilith (pun intended) and several details that he imbued her with and hopes shine through in the final product. There’s a lot of fun to Ian’s concepts and he is actively writing fanfic for the whole Operation Recall team while waiting to see what Larry and crew come up with!

Volume three goes to Kickstarter on 1 November. It’s an IDW Larry Hama 155.5 to 300 focused issue with the standard tons of extras, interviews, tidbits, and updates on the previous volumes. The team has slightly changed. Roger is writing less but still managing the format. Skinny Joefan and Brian Sauer have also provided details to the book.
But volume three isn’t the only bit of news! Greg has joined the AAR team with his Command Files project, brining 40 years of various dossiers and files into a combined portfolio of over 200 Joes. He and Josh are announcing the project in preparation for a January Kickstarter. The art and style looks great.

Order of Battle Podcast special episode Operation Recall - Night Raid and Ozzie
Jason was in Atlanta for Joelanta, a second show for the spring held Toylanta main show. While there he was able to gather the dream team of Chris Scott, Los Castigadores (IG: @the_punisher_magfed), Don Koehne (IG: @elitecobra2000), and Mark Gerwing of Mark2Design Toys (IG: @mark2design).
At 2am in the hotel lobby, while Jason was making sure another collector was ok, this dream team interviewed returning guest JE Russell. Russell’s character concept, Night Raid and Ozzie, was selected as one of the original 16 Operation Recall designs by the Legendary Design team. Ron Rudat himself has been working on the ideations to bring this character to life.
Chris, John, and crew, in Jason’s absence, discussed Oswald, the best of buddies, how Night Raid gives off serious Oktober Guard vibes, and their enjoyment of the Operation Recall project. Russell is no stranger to toy design, as the co-owner of Chicken Fried Toys, the company that produces a beautiful western themed 4” modern action figure line: Dime Novel Legends. He’s also familiar with ideating from real people and their thoughts on design. You may have seen Keone Young, the voice of Storm Shadow, at shows tabling with CFT this summer.
This turned out to be a fun conversation and a doozy for Jason to edit. Thanks to everyone who made it happen over beers, yawns, a lot of laughter, and inappropriate jokes.

This 2’ x 4’ x 1’ headquarters is scaled for 3.75 and 4” GI Joe, or other 1:18 action figures. It comes with sticker sheets to flesh out your base. This enormous structure can be used as is for play or some serious display. You can also hit up the several amazing 1:18 custom builders to add desks, gun racks, computer terminals and more. This base is cool. Very cool.

We’re back with another great update from JoeFest, a Real Augusta Toy Show!
None other than our community’s own Mark Pennington is going to be a guest at JoeFest this June! Mark is a previous Hasbro designer having worked on the GI Joe toy line in the late 80’s.
If you aren’t sure who Mark designed, grab whatever your favorite figure was in 88 and 89 and chances are, he’s your guy! Mark’s character designs started showing up in 1987 and he was prolific through 1990. Personally some of my favorites are Hit & Run, Iron Grenadier, v2 Destro, and Hydro-Viper. But honestly, that’s barely scratching the surface!
And I’m not even bringing up everything he’s done outside of GI Joe...
Bring your comics and file cards to be signed and let him know how much we love his era of GI Joe. I’m hoping he brought some original art and I’ll be begging him to do a piece for me. Who would I ask him to do? Secto-Viper? Techno-Viper? Scoop? V2 Rock N Roll? Oh no… this is too hard.
