Welcome to destination next, a monthly podcast hosted by me, Chris Hall and brought to you by STYRKR.

In this episode I chat with Sam, a gravel racer, fixed gear king and talented photographer, not to forget a lovely human. We talk all about his plans for this year in racing around the world.

Follow Sam here: https://www.instagram.com/swilliamandrews/ and here: https://www.instagram.com/sam.w.andrews/

This podcast will serve as a platform to share the highs and lows of those at the forefront of endurance sport.

We celebrate stories from across the globe of ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Personal missions achieved without global recognition or glory. Feats of suffering without the fanfare.

STYRKR is committed to giving everyday athletes and professionals alike the strength to go further.

We understand we are one small part of an athlete’s arsenal. Going beyond your limits is a test of mind, body, and soul. Let’s celebrate the suffering alongside some trusted experts.

I remember seeing Hayley on the podium at the commonwealth games coming third in the time trial and tenth in the road race back in 2018. Hayley has been a dominant force in the UK TT scene with multiple National Championship medals and also has won the National Hill Climb Championship in 2019. She knows a thing or two about what it takes to race at the highest level and offers some incredible tips to get into racing, whether that's on the road, TTs or on Zwift, where she races for Movistar's E-Team. I hope you enjoy this episode!

We since then became mates and cycled together at points during Badlands 2021. Adam early this year headed out to Rwanda to tackle The Race Around Rwanda, a race that has been high on my list to try out. I hope you enjoy this one!

One of my favourite memories of Darren was at the National 24 hour TT in 2019 where he was the person who grabbed my bike at the end whilst I collapsed to the floor post race. Darren is one of the most accomplished ultra distance cyclists I know having tackled The TCR, TransAm Bike Race, Paris Brest Paris and London Edinburgh London to name a few. He is also someone who doesn't like to limit himself to one category and can be found racing in the Masters Crits in London. Darren is also the Co-Founder at Velomatch, a digital cycling marketplace which unbundles advising from selling. By disrupting the market in this way we offer more choice, better advice and greater convenience.

The first time I met Luke, he made me an incredible sandwich, featuring fantastic sourdough, cheese, apple and Outdoor Provisions' Almond, Date and Sea Salt Nut Butter. I still vouch for it being one of the best Sandwiches I have ever eaten.

Luke founded Outdoor Provisions with Christian 3 years back now, whilst out on a bike-packing trip and they have been slowly and steadily growing from their base in Manchester.

Between them they have also created the Second City Divide ride, a bike-packing route between Glasgow and Manchester. You can read more about it here: https://www.secondcitydivide.cc/

LASTLY, they are very kindly offering listeners 20% off their order! Head to https://outdoorprovisions.co.uk/ and use the code 'ZEROLEMON' (valid for 1 month from this episode going live)

I first met Christian back at Badlands where we just kept passing each other in the race. We had brief moments of conversation about anything and everything, then ended up finishing pretty close to each other and the conversation continued. Christian was in the process of testing the final products he, Leon and his team had been developing and testing for years prior to the race and Badlands became a true test ground for them. Spring forward, I'm incredibly pleased to share that Styrkr will be fuelling my challenges for 2022 and onwards. I've been testing the range for a while and really pleased with how it not only agrees with me but helps with my performance. I thought hell we should do a podcast about how Styrkr started and a bit of a breakdown of fuelling for your rides, challenges and races.

As part of that, Christian and Leon have kindly offered listeners of this podcast the opportunity to test their range! Simply head to https://styrkr.com/collections/products/products/test-pilot-kit and enter the discount code 'HALLSTESTKIT' to get the test pilot kit for free. If you want to add anything else, I'm a big fan of the GEL30 Nitro+ too!

When Cervélo bought out the Caledonia it got a huge amount of attention left, right and centre, and rightly so!

The Caledonia is the bike many keep reaching for when they know the odometer’s going well past the triple-digit mark. Long rides invariably have some smooth tarmac, some junk pavement over backroads, a cutty singletrack connector, and maybe even your own local Strade Bianche sector. So Cervélo built a bike that could take on all of them, do it well, and fit fenders in case the ominous clouds turn into a downpour 130km into your day.

The Caledonia-5 was developed in collaboration with  World Tour riders to satisfy the need for a dedicated cobbles bike. Faster handling isn’t necessarily better— they engineered the handling based on the specific use-case. In this case, it’s Roubaix. Roubaix is harder on bikes than any other race on the calendar, and there’s zero margin for error. Cervélo increased the rear center, lowered the BB, and increased the trail. The handling is still fast, but they've added stability.

Modern road riders are looking for bikes to handle long-distance, high pace, no limits, and offer maximum fun. By placing lower modulus carbon in key areas to mitigate the brittleness of hi-mod fiber—the Caledonia delivers performance, comfort, and speed. Oh, and you can fit a 34mm tire in there. Or 31mm with fenders.

Something I have always been somewhat perplexed by. What the f**k is CBD? There is so many different options out there and it's a bit of a confusing market. Anyway step in Jacek, my mate who started LevelOut. They make CBD + Nootropics for an active lifestyle. This one was a bit of a tough race for me. Badlands is a 750-kilometre (466-mile) gravel race taking in three of the deserts in Spain: the Sierra Navada, Gorafe and Tabernas. These are considered officially to be the only desert in Europe.

The race is mainly off-road on gravel, beaches and singletrack, with rocky climbs and descents. Temperatures in this area range from 25-50 degrees Celsius and extreme weather conditions do occur from the odd rare flash floods to extreme heat. This year some of the best racers internationally lined up such as Christian Meier, two times Olympic Gold Medalist Alistair Brownlee and former pro (and eventual winner) Mattia De Marchi to name a few.

Badlands is a race that would suit either a gravel bike or a MTB, with racers battling needing to race self supported, finding their own food, water and also repairing everything themselves if they have any issues.

For me, the goal of this race was about finishing it and enjoying the experience. It certainly became type 2 fun, with temperatures hitting the high 40s and low 50s! I went into this race struggling to recover from an injury so I was under no expectation that it was going to be tough but, I maybe was not quite sure just how tough it would be. Like I mentioned before, the heat became a huge factor on this race.

When I reached the end I was, to be frank incredibly emotional, exhausted and relieved. I went into this race with no expectations and I was so pleased to have finished.

In this episode, Emily from Attacus and I discuss everything that happened during the race and also some bikepacking tips and hacks I have learnt over the years.

So this episode is a little different to some of the previous episodes I have recorded but I wanted to offer you an insight into Cervélo's newest bike launched this week, the NEW R5!

In episode 61 of the podcast I chat with good friend Phil Spearman, Global Product Marketing Manager at Cervélo to give a deep dive breakdown of the new R5. Phil and myself chat regularly as we record an internal podcast as well for Cervélo and thought why not do something similar for you all to listen to about this exciting new bike!

R5 has one job—get to the top, fast. But for all the glory and fanfare that comes with a summit finish, they’re rarely the only climb of the day. And while a race isn’t usually won on a descent, they can certainly be lost. A climbing bike that can’t carve a hairpin is a bit like a cup of decaf coffee. This is the fourth iteration of the R5, and while weight and stiffness have varied over the years, the handling, poise, and unmatched prowess on a descent have been consistent since day one.

Phil and myself chat regularly as we record an internal podcast as well for Cervélo and thought why not do something similar for you all to listen to about this exciting new bike!

Flat-out. That’s how Áspero debuted under the characters of the Wednesday Night Rough Club two years ago, and that’s how it’s stayed. And since, at Cervélo, they know that flat out doesn’t stay flat out for long without a little help from science, they've come back from the drawing board with a new Áspero. A faster Áspero, a lighter Áspero, and—dare we say it—an even better looking Áspero.

Every now and then in life you meet incredibly kind, generous and genuine people who stand out to you. Kofi is one of these individuals. He set up Ride for Unity last summer.

Established in June 2020 following the murder of George Floyd, Ride For Unity is a Global Cycling Community that celebrates the unity & diversity within cycling.

Their aim is to use representation as a tool to encourage people of all shades, sexes, sizes and sexual orientation to participate in cycling.

Everyone is welcome no matter who you are, no matter where you are, together we ride. In August, with the support of their amazing ambassadors, they rode together in LA, London, South Africa, New York, Yorkshire and Edinburgh.

Gareth Winter, probably one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. Gareth has worked with Sky for many years, having been deeply involved when they sponsored the now named Ineos Grenadiers. He comes from a family of cyclists, all the way back to his grandparents. One of the thing I love about Gareth is his commitment to himself both physically and mentally. We discuss very openly the hardships of training and the pressures from other people to 'look' a certain way as a 'cyclist'.

This episode, Gareth talks through a series of photos so it may be worth watching on my. YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChrisHallRides

Cycling's biggest problem: eating disorders. Sam Woodfield and myself discussed this in episode 43 of the podcast very openly discussing the effects of it to both of us throughout our lives. Sam, very openly talks about his battles with his weight and his own mental health. A bit of a serious one to be honest with you but hopefully the message comes across clearly and we can help some other people who may be struggling.

Sam runs a cycling team called UpShift Nutrition RT, an Elite UK based cycling team with a passion about racing & riders well-being.

Thank you, Sam for talking so openly.
