What does it mean to be queer in 2020? Author and journalist Amelia Abraham leads this week's look back at WOW London earlier this year with a fascinating panel discussion featuring model and activist Munroe Bergdorf, Executive Editor of VICE UK Zing Tsjeng and campaigner Owl Fisher. Today, the options and freedoms available to LGBTQ+ people living in the West are greater than ever before. But at what cost does this acceptance come? Is same-sex marriage, improved media visibility and corporate endorsement all it’s cracked up to be?

Following the extract from the festival, Jude Kelly caught up in lockdown with Amelia to hear how Covid-19 has affected queer people, from facing isolation to watching trans rights being rolled back in the US.

Plus, don't miss a short interview with Mishcon de Reya's Emma Woollcott who founded the firm's Pride Network and was celebrated as one of the Telegraph's LGBT Top 50 Executives two years running.

And there's a performance by Emel Mathlouthi of 'Everywhere We Looked Was Burning.' Emel's song Kelmti Horra (My Word is Free) generated millions of views during the 2011 Tunisian Revolution. The song served as the anthem for the Arab Spring and she performed it at the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize Concert. Listen to more of her work here

She's joined by 19-year-old Favour Chukwugolum from Nigeria's Girls Voices Initative, a nonprofit that works to educate adolescent girls and women about their rights in law. Featuring Jordan Stephens, a discussion on how to bring up boys and a performance by Hope Masike

This episode features an insightful and candid interview with long-time WOW supporter and speaker Jordan Stephens, a writer and one half of music duo Rizzle Kicks. Speaking to Jude Kelly just before lockdown, they discuss the idea of toxic masculinity, race, and men's responsibility to check in on each other's behaviour.

First up though, we look back to WOW London in March 2020 to ask 'Are we giving boys the tools they need to contribute to a gender-equal world?' in a discussion on Bringing up Boys. This fascinating conversation features Ellen Bird of Mums Like Us (a network for disabled mums), writer and Black Ballard Editor Jendella Benson, Koen Dedoncker, from Belgium's Men Engage Network, and Aceil Haddad from Pregnant Then Screwed.

Plus, hear from Mishcon de Reya's Elliot Moss about how they support women at their firm and a performance by Hope Masike, a singer, songwriter, Mbira-player and author from Zimbabwe. Her desire is to push the traditional mbira, an instrument labelled 'demonic' during Zimbabwe's colonial era, into new and contemporary spaces. She recently started a fibroid awareness and support campaign inspired by how (contrary to the handling they are given) they are affecting a lot of Black women's livelihoods in her country, including herself. In this special bonus episode, listen to Layla Saad's interview at WOW London in 2020 about her ground-breaking book Me and White Supremacy.

What exactly is white supremacy? Are you able to recognise your privilege but unsure of how to challenge it? Do you want to speak up but feel you haven't got the tools to do so? Back in March, Jude Kelly interviewed anti-racism educator Layla to find out more about her journey from the #MeandWhiteSupremacy viral Instagram challenge to writing her now best-selling workbook that challenges white people to understand their white privilege and the ways in which they are complicit in upholding white supremacy.

At this time in history, more than ever before, people are asking what they can do to help dismantle white supremacy and where to begin. Find out more in this episode and at https://www.meandwhitesupremacybook.com/
