NZPETeachercast is a podcast focusing on educators and teachers from New Zealand and around the world. We hear about the challenges and successes they are having while engaging in their passion of teaching.
Getting to record podcast interviews in person are so much more enjoyable than over Skype. Even better than that though, are interviews that take place outside of New Zealand!
For the penultimate episode of the year, #NZPETeachercast is broadcasting from St Kilda in Melbourne! A group of teachers and Directors of Sport have been on a travel scholarship to some outstanding schools who are doing innovative things with their ADP. While it is really hard to paint a picture of how these schools are implementing these programmes, we do our best to explain some of the key features and take aways from our observations.
I am joined by the one and only Celia Fleck who featured on the podcast way back at episode 7 and took over as interviewer with episode 17! Also joining us for this session is Matthew Cleaver who is Head of Physical Education and Health and New Plymouth Boys High School.

In today's episode we hear from an individual who is about to start his teaching career. Jack Stewart will be working at Rongotai College next year and we have a brief chat about some of his experiences of education growing up, what his teacher training was like, and what he is looking forward to most next year.
In 6 months time we are going to revisit some of his thoughts and ideas and see how he is progressing in his new career!
In this weeks episode I get to sit down with Design Thinking fan Ximena Aitken from Island Bay Primary School. I am still amazed when I talk to some of our outstanding Primary educators to hear hear how committed and passionate they are, and also how different the learning is from when I went through Primary school 30 (ish) years ago.
Ximena is a bit of a Design Thinking Process pro so we spend most of our time talking about that, but we also touch on a prototype she has developed which helps gamify professional learning.

On a fairly calm and quiet Halloween evening, I was fortunate enough to have Dave Meaclem (Rongotai College first XV coach), open his home to share a beer to two while talking leadership.
I have enjoyed watching Dave not just develop and educate our students, but also empowering them to take up leadership roles and make positive decisions. Throughout this episode we get to hear how he fosters leadership among his athletes, but we also get insight and wisdom from a coach who has spent 32 years fine tuning his craft.

Earlier this month I was extremely lucky to find myself in the Middle East of all places! As a masterclass presenter at the Connected PE Conference I was able to share my knowledge around gamification and flipped learning.
One of the highlights of the trip was being able to sit down with and ex-pat Kiwi who has recently made the move to Dubai with his family to teach. Being in the United Arab Emirates is definitely an eye opener, and Greg Thurlow describes some of the challenges he and his family face on a day to day basis as well as some of the great experiences this opportunity affords. A great listen if teaching internationally is something in your short to medium term plan!
In this weeks episode of NZPETeachercast I have the pleasure of sitting down with Australia's most entertaining Science teacher (an unofficial title I have given him) - Pete Whiting! I love teachers who game, and Pete is a die hard gamer from way back. We spend a good amount of time discussing the implementation of gamification with his classes but we also delve into his passion for flipped learning and touch on his success using a Genius Hour approach with his students.

Today we welcome Dale Sidebottom, an enthusiastic primary and secondary trained teacher who travels around the world hosting active learning workshops to primary and secondary students with his company Energetic Education. He also runs a successful personal training company that focuses on creating engaging training contexts and environments. Dale is an amazing bloke who loves a good yarn and you're going to hear a lot about what drives him to motivate others in this episode.

Today we welcome Stephen McConnachie from Middleton Grange School onto the podcast. With a passion for all things technology, Stephen has successfully managed to embed exciting tools and e-learning approaches within his classroom. He also role models his use of technology by leading a wide variety of professional development opportunities for Mathematics educators around Christchurch and New Zealand.
It's fitting that for Episode 20 we get to hear from the amazing Andy Milne! A passionate Health teacher that gives SO much to the Health and PE community, Andy was this year awarded National Health Teacher of the Year. He is truly a global educator if ever I have met one, and we spend quite a bit of time discussing what this means among a variety of other very cool things Andy has achieved in his career. It was a real honour speaking with him.

Today I get to speak with a former colleague who has been all over the media recently, for the changes around compulsory Te reo Maori at Auckland Grammar. Neitana Lobb is a passionate educator who has been teaching for about four years now and is doing great things motivating our young people and advocating for Maori culture in education.
In episode 18 of the NZPETeachercast, we have a passionate senior leader from Sacred Heart Girls' College in New Plymouth. We spend a lot the episode talking about how the school wide inquiry came about, with an emphasis on the HOF group that helped co-construct the process. Due to some unfortunate weather, there is a bit of clipping throughout - apologies in advance.
A while back it was suggested that maybe someone should interview me on NZPETeachercast.. I thought nothing much of it until a very respected colleague of mine (Celia Fleck) emailed me through some interview questions - now I know how all these people feel when I randomly ask them to appear on the podcast! Celia asked some great questions and we spend some time focusing on the past, present and future, linking in with the theme from this years PENZ conference. We cover a range of things: my sporting background, flipped learning, growth mindset, My Study Series, the future of PE and a few other things. I hope you learn a little more about me!
Todays episode is a unique one, because we put a request out for questions on Twitter and have presented them to a beginning teacher (actually in her second year). I must admit we received some really good questions!
Mallory is a fantastic Health and PE teacher from Kings College who has been innovating since she started her career 18 months ago. She is a big proponent of social media and co hosts the NZBT chat on Twitter with Georgia Dougherty. Mallory (and Georgia) were also awarded the Outstanding New Professional at the recent PENZ conference, recognition that was well deserved for both of them!
Every so often you come across a teacher who is gifted with an amazing talent and ability to inspire the tamariki of NZ like no other. In the very brief time I have known him, Julian Reid falls into that category of educator - and I am blown away by his passion and enthusiasm for making a change. I have listened to this episode three times already and I regret only asking Julian 10 questions!
kickstarting new episodes of NZPETeachercast with a great interview with Jeremy Cumming, a seconded Secondary Advisor at the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch from Catholic Cathedral College. We have a fantastic discussion about the flipped classroom, with a bit of an emphasis on how it can impact relationships with our students.
To kick of 2017, we're having a focus on elite athletes and coaches who are also educators.
Todays guest is Zico Coronel from Rongotai College. Zico is an exceptional teacher and basketball coach. He has been the Assistant Head Coach of the Wellington Saints for a number of years, has coached in many schools around New Zealand, won a variety of championships with his current junior basketball team, and more recently was named Head Coach of the New Zealand U16 Boys team.
I love the way Zico infuses his passion for basketball within all aspects of his teaching!
In the final episode of the NZPETeachercast for 2016, I get to interview a beginning teacher from Tamaki College in Auckland, NZ. Georgia Dougherty is a Health and PE teacher who is just wrapping up her first year in the profession. She is a teacher who is very reflective, has spent a considerable amount of time seeking to learn and develop her own practice, and in less than a year, is already considered a role model for those of us trying to be more innovative with our students. Throughout this episode we pull apart Georgia's first year as a teacher and consider some of the successes and challenges she has faced over the last 12 months.

In the penultimate episode of the NZPETeachercast for 2016, I am extremely privileged to interview an ex student of mine. I taught Troy Ruhe during my time at Wellington High School, where he demonstrated success in everything he put his mind to. But even more impressive than his constant success in the classroom, was his willingness to be a role model for other Māori and Pasifika students throughout the school. He had mana, or an influence about him that had significant influence on many students and teachers that came in contact with him. Troy and I discuss a range of factors relating to his educational success as a Māori student.
In the 10th episode of the NZPETeachercast we have Andrew O'neill from Middleton Grange School. I met Andrew at PENZ conference earlier in the year and we bumped into each other again at the PENZ Inspired Leadership Programme here in Wellington. Andrew and his team are having huge success using a Sport Education approach with 1.4. We talk about this authentic approach to learning as well as discuss a few small successes as we move into the second year of a report format of PE Scholarship.
Today the NZPETeachercast has its first international guest in the one and only PE Geek, Jarrod Robinson. Jarrod develops and builds apps to support PE teachers in the classroom and contributes significantly to the professional development of teachers around the world. We talk across a range of topics including where he started from, Connected PE conference and community, emerging technologies in PE and his latest app, Monsuta Fitness.
In todays episode we hear from Cam Smith from Scots College as he discusses socio-critical thought and its practical applications in junior and senior PE. We also spend some time talking about his Masters in Education as well as making some bold predication's about the All Blacks.
In this episode we get to hear from Celia Fleck who is the current Curriculum Facilitator for Play.Sport. We discuss a range of topics including the Sport in Education Programme, her role with Play.Sport and the upcoming #WellyHPE Workshop Series.
In episode 6 of the NZPETeachercast we have Rachael Dixon joining us to talk health consultation. Despite being such a crucial part of our curriculum development, it's a process that seems to lack a lot of understanding as well as carry quite a few myths with it. Rachael addresses some of those myths and gives some great ideas about how we might prepare and plan for this process.
A throw back to PENZ Conference 2016 where I had my very first podcast interview with the one and only Garry Carnachan, Executive Director of the NZ Secondary Schools Sports Council. We talk about the Sport in Education programme, whats driving our youth away from physical activity and a brief discussion about a project called The Teachers Games.
In episode 4 of NZPETeachercast, we talk senior courses with Matt Lambert. Matt is the head of department of Physical Education and is taking a really unique approach to course design.
I'll be sharing a recent challenge, success and a new app I find useful in my teaching. Today I discuss the challenges of parent teacher evenings, a recent success meeting with a Board of Trustees representative and I talk about the application School Report Writer.
In episode 2 of NZPETeachercast, we have our first guest with Kelly Ross from Tarawera High School. Kelly is the Curriculum Leader of Health and PE and is doing amazing work within a modern learning environment thanks to a $14 million rebuild.
