Author Robert Cowley has been very busy indeed - he's penned some fabulous children’s books all under the banner of the "Manx Bedtime Story" series. His books are much more than just fairytales though… and book no.2, "RED: Rufus the Manx Dragon" illustrates this perfectly.
Christy DeHaven spoke with Robert and also Steven Downward from charity Isle Listen, who are benefitting from sales of the book.
There is a book launch at the Family Library on Saturday 12th Feb from 10.30am into the afternoon. Called the Dragon, Princess and Knight extravaganza, there will be dragons everywhere as well as fancy dress, face painting, crafts and games. Young illustrator Karmen St John Cain and author Robert will be signing copies of the book and Isle Listen will be there as well supporting the event.

'The Spark Documentary', sponsored by the IoM Arts Council, is a mini-series that aims to give hope and help to sufferers of depression and those who support and care for them.
Masterminded by Jenny Derbyshire and produced by Dark Avenue Film, the Spark has interviews with people from all walks of life - therapists, professionals and fellow sufferers as well as quotes that may be helpful or inspiring. The music played within the documentary has been created by local artists, some of whom have struggled with depression themselves.
Christy DeHaven caught up with Patrick and Bethany from Dark Avenue Films and Jenny herself, whose hope for the documentary is that it encourages people to discuss their mental health and to shine a light on the help and support available on the Isle of Man. Aside from having made a name for himself cooking up amazing dishes in the back of his very own food truck on TV Channel Dave, rapper and television personality "Big Zuu" has previously worked as a mentor for young people. Recently, he has teamed up with the Co-Op on their own support schemes within their Young Members' Group as a new study, looking at the attitudes and aspirations of young people around the UK, has found that Children as young as 10 think the pandemic will affect their chances in the future.
Christy caught up with Big Zuu to find out more - and also discovered that his cookery talents have taken him to some pretty special places...

October 18th is World Menopause Day, raising awareness of the challenges, treatments and support available to women approaching or experiencing the menopause. Christy caught up with two experts in the field - Dr Ella Russell, a highly experienced Private GP with specialist expertise in menopausal and peri-menopausal health and Dr Paula Briggs, Chair Elect of the British Menopause Society. Both shared excellent advice and suggested various groups, online applications and personal approaches that could make that menopause that bit more manageable.
Tanya gets her no dig beds ready for Spring planting and takes us into her kitchen, to share her process of rooting cuttings and creating plants for free.

Christy catches up with Pippa Lovell from foraging restaurant 'Versa' - winner of the San Pellegrino Young Chef Sustainability award for Europe and Forbes 30 Under 30. She is creating a new art hub and community space which launches in July and opens very soon in the South of the Island. It's an exhibition space for artists, workshops, henna art on Sundays, kids can come in and rent easels, there’s vegan snacks, a library of different loose leaf teas (like a pick and mix) fair-trade coffees and British cocoa. Dark Avenue Film had only been in business for about a year when the Pandemic struck. But Isle of Man filmmakers Bethany White and Patrick Crellin didn't let Covid-19 stop them - in fact, they worked out a way to turn Lockdown to their advantage.. They came up with an innovative way to shoot their short 'Endless Summer' which has led to numerous international festival successes for them already. Their recent shortlisting for New York's Socially Relevant Festival, with patrons Martin Sheen and Erin Brokovich, also gives them a World Premiere in March. Christy catches up with Mike Kewley, Mindfulness Teacher and Adam Denard, Ecologist FOr Manx Wildlife Trust and project officer for Wild Wellbeing. The two have been running a 'Mindfulness in Wild Places' project on the Isle of Man, which has recently been supported by fell runner Jim Reid; Jim has just completed a challenge to run the equivalent of the Pennine Way here on the Isle, to raise funds for the project.
On World Kindness Day (Friday 13th Nov) Christy caught up with child psychologist Dr Sam Wass, known for his work on Channel 4's "Secret Life of 4, 5, 6 Year Olds", to find out what kindness means to kids and how programmes like My Little Pony - Pony Life can help them develop social skills. The Cooil Hall Annual Fairtrade Sale and Lunches is a shopping experience unlike any other. It all began when two Manxies randomly happened across each other some years ago in a little place called Tanzania and since then, Malcolm and Margie Newton's dedication and passion for ethical retail has played a major part in the IOM being named a Fair Trade Island. 37 years after the first sale took place in the family living room, the Newtons will continue the tradition this weekend (Oct 29th to 31st), this despite the sudden and unexpected passing of Malcolm earlier this year. Christy found out more about the event and got a sneak preview of what's on sale with daughter Katie.

The Oakwood was a very special project : hundreds of oak trees planted by Manx schoolchildren to mark the Millennium. Sadly, many of the trees struggled to grow and although the park is well used, the paths have seen much better days.
