Christmas has become rife with rampant excess. And the truth is most of us have no intention of doing less. So, how can we get our focus back on Christmas...the real and unvarnished story of Christmas? Recently, I saw a commercial on television that got me thinking about about a simple but powerful solution.

This episode was sparked by witnessing the destruction and suffering that had been experienced in the southeast following hurricane Helene. Perhaps more accurately, this episode attempts to delve into the appropriate response, for people of faith, when we witness the suffering of others.

As I was watching the interaction between Trump and his followers, I noticed a religious-like fervor. Then I asked, "Is this a cult?" After a lot of research, the final answer ultimately led me someplace new that was surprising and, to me at least, quite convincing.

I have heard and read a lot of words offered as proof of Jesus' tendency towards liberalism or love of conservatism. I think, as of late, Christians are less and less a people who try to reflect the teachings of Jesus in our daily lives, and more and more we seem to be a people who want Jesus to reflect our own cultural and political favorites.
So I decided to ask the question myself is Jesus a liberal of conservative?

In response to my most recent two episodes, I have had quite a few people ask: Is Trump is the antichrist? Others have been more certain: They are absolutely sure he is. This episode looks at what the Bible says about the antichrist, what the modern expectation are, and why I think the answer to the question is absolutely clear.

When Donald Trump calls upon Christians and tells them that, if he wins, they will never vote again, should we believe him or dismiss his promise as silly hyperbole? This video examines the convergence of his bold promises, his use of Christian Nationalism, and the beliefs of many the Christians who support him. I am a life-long Christian and I want to be clear: I am against the way he is co-opting the Christian faith and I think is it bad for both Christianity and for America.

There’s a new movement in the world of conservative Christianity. It is relatively opaque and unknown, but its power and influence is growing, and if you are unaware of the NAR, it is time you learn about them, because they are on a path to change Christianity, politics, and culture in the United States. It’s not hyperbole in the slightest to say that, if they succeed, politics, religion, and culture will be dramatically - and more worrisome - perhaps permanently changed.

There is word, a single word, in the Bible that has been woefully and tragically misunderstood. One interpretation of this word leads to harmony and abundant living, the other interpretation could quite possibly lead to the ruin of humanity. So, what is the word and why do so many Christians choose the interpretation that could lead to our destruction? This episode answers both questions.

The Bible contains 66 books. Of the 27 books that comprise the New Testament, only four are dedicated to telling the story of Jesus's earthly ministry; these are the Gospels. The Gospels each tell the story of Easter morning and the discovery of Jesus's empty tomb, but there is surprising variation between them. This episode highlights the differences and offers explanation as to why these differences exist.

I have heard and read so much recently from Christians who espouse their belief that God is on the side of their political candidate. After watching so much contantious debate, it seemed less than wise to venture into those hostile waters with an opinion. And yet... I decided, "what the heck?" And so in this episode, I endevour to answer what is, in all likelyhood, an unanswerable question: If Jesus were asked who he woudl vote for, what would he say?

I recently came across a quote from Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross that caught my attention. She bluntly said there is a life choice that is so important, if you don’t choose it, you are a "prostitute" and "you will not have a pleasant death."
This episode offers two opposing life choices. One is proposed by Dr. Kubler-Ross. Other is a movie quote, but it is said by none other than Morgan Freeman, who may not be God, but has played the Almighty in a movie.

In 1965, Charles Schultz, the creator of the Peanuts comic strip, released the television show A Charlie Brown Christmas. Most of the show was about Charlie Brown feeling out of sync with the rest of the world around him during the Christmas season and his trying to figure out what “Christmas is really all about. “ In the end, he comes to a breaking point, and literally yells, Isn't there anyone who can tell me what Christmas is all about? “ To which his friend Linus replies, sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you. Linus then famously recites the Christmas story from the gospel of Luke. And though the gospel of Luke does indeed point Charlie Brown to the original Christmas narrative, it, perhaps does not do what Charlie Brown asked for. He doesn't ask for the Christmas story, but instead asks a very specific question: What is Christmas all about? This episode takes the original Christmas story and looks at what Christmas is really all about.

If you live in the United States, like I do (even if you didn't grow up religious) you probably feel like you have a pretty good mastery of the Christmas story. And yet, there are elements of the story that we learned as children, that are assumed as factual, but which some Biblical scholars now argue may not be correct. None of these challenges the core of the Christian faith, but some of these are genuinely surprising.

This episode presents 5 popular and well-known elements of the Christmas story that may be wrong.

This episode was sparked by quotes from two famous people. One is Steve Jobs, the billionaire entrepreneur. The other is Brandon Saunderson, the prolific fantasy author. The first quote was said by Steve Jobs at a college commencement as he shared his thoughts about the best way to approach every day in life. The other quote was written by Sanderson but not spoken by him. It was spoken by a character named Denth in one of his novels.
In the end, this episode attempts to answer the question as to who our daily motivation should...and should not be.

An incantation is the performance of words that are believed to have a magical effect when spoken or sung. A prayer, on the other hand,  is an invocation or act that seeks to activate a rapport with an object of worship through deliberate communication. But,  are these two descriptions really saying the same thing...or are they something quite different?
And, is there any overlap between the two?

We Christians share the Ten Commandments with Judaism.  Except they call them something different., they don’t have all the same commandments that we do,  and they interpret them differently, also.  And, wait until you hear how they understand the commandments were written on the stone tablets!  Once you listen to this episode,  you may be thinking about the commandments in totally new ways.

Ever wondered to yourself if there is any overlap between an Orson Wells movie and what we call Jesus? No?
Okay, how about this: have you ever wondered about the things within Christianity that are so commonly said  we cease to think about where they came from or what they originally meant? No again? huh.
Well...listen to this podcast anyway. Things are not at all what they seem.

The idea for this episode came as I was writing the podcast on being silly.  It dawned on me that,  in all the stories we have about him, Jesus never laughs.  I'm not saying that Jesus never laughed.  I assume that he did.  But, it is disappointing, to me, that scripture never mentions it.
That got me thinking about other thing that are not in the Bible, but I wish they were.

When interpreting the Constitution, there is a great deal of discussion around the original intent of our Founding Fathers. So it seems appropriate to look at their personal beliefs when we attempt to answer the question: Was our country founded as a Christian nation?
So, lets begin this journey with Benjamin Franklin.

For many many generations there has been a widely know list of the seven deadly sins:  lust, gluttony, greed , sloth, wrath, envy and pride.  But, if the list is so ancient, that raises several questions: is it from the Bible? if not, where did it come from?  and, what purpose does it serve us today?

A number of times, in my ministry, I have run an errand on Ash Wednesday having forgotten that I still have ashes on my forehead. On these occasions I will invariably have someone kindly say, "um,.. you have a smudge on your forehead." This will lead to an interesting conversation in which I tell them about the use of ashes on Ash Wednesday and they ask something like, "why would you do that?"

This episode answers some of the the question I have been asked over the years.

A stray gummy bear, several unfinished kid's books, and three strangers from the east come together to create the theme for this episode. So, are the three kings from the Bible or are they just a story that was added to the narrative of Christ and then embellished down through the ages? The forth of July can be experienced in many ways by many people...this year it led me to ask this question.
This seems like such a strange question for a podcast, but as we make our way through life expressing our thankfulness, it might be worth pausing to ponder: is this really thankfulness?
And yet, why is this question even important?
How can I tell the difference between what is real and what is not?

The impetus for this episode came while cruising the internet and stumbling across an article that drew me in.  That article, in turn, revealed something I had never known: the impetus that caused Andrew Lloyd Weber to write Jesus Christ Superstar.
Then...following through to discover more about his inspiration, I was led  to think about the world we live in today and ask the question:
Is God on Your Side?

This is a question that has been wondered by anyone who has spent any time pondering their relationship with their creator.  And there are certainly those amongst us who would not only answer yes, but go on to say we should all quit trying to be the decider in our own lives... Let God make all the decisions!

In this episode, I let you know what I think the answer to this question is.  And I even back it up with a story from Jesus.

I should be honest  before you begin this podcast - there isn't a definitive answer to this question. So, this isn't really one of those where I intend to prove something - but instead, this is far more in the "what if" category. Having said that, this is something I just recently thought of and it offers a "what if" that may well change the way to read one of scripture's most well-know stories

Dan Brown's novel is a quick-paced and exciting tale. It tells a story of Jesus having married Mary Magdalene, had children, and then the hidden society that arose to protect the secret of their bloodline.
Interestingly, the novel makes this claim in the forward:
“All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate.”
It that really true?
This episode answers that question.

If you have ever spent any time studying the Bible, then you are probably aware of the concept that we are made in the image of God; which is surprisingly both well known and little understood.
It is stated clearly in Genesis 1:27 and yet most people who are aware of this verse would have a difficult time describing what it means to be "made in the image of God."  This episode explores the meaning behind this well know, yet little understood Bible verse.

Mark Twain was an author, humorist, and a courageous voice of change in a tumultuous time in our nation’s history. With as often as he spoke on the contentious subjects of the day, it would be easy to see him as a man who lived without fear regarding the consequence of his words.  But there was one story that he wrote that was considered so potentially incendiary he chose to not publish it for fear of the public’s reaction. This episode is the reading of that story.

In 1950, after a friend experienced the death of a family member, Albert Einstein wrote him a letter of condolence and comfort. In the letter, Einstein described a particular singular focus as being the "one issue of true religion”. One can't help but pay attention when Einstein implies that either a religion deals with this particular issue, or it is a false religion.

The title of this episode is the opposite of click-bait.  We tend to shy away from the unfamiliar - preferring to seek out experiences that are comfortable and familiar, and except to a very few of us, this name is VERY unfamiliar.

And yet, Wa-ThooHuk is someone you have very likely heard of...just by another name.

This episode tells about his story, ventures into  a very famous part of his story, and then includes a not-so-famous detail that is truly inspiring.

This is the first in a three part series:

# 75 Who Is this Guy? ( the story of Josephus)

# 76 What Is so Special about 70?

#77  Who were the Pharisees?

One of the most important dates in Judeo-Christian history is 70 AD.  The events that occurred that year would dramatically change Judaism forever, and profoundly affect  the way we approach Christian biblical scholarship. What we know of those important event comes almost exclusively from a single individual.  He is known by most scholars simply as Josephus. This episode tells his strange journey towards becoming the historian who everyone references, but no one fully trusts.

I recently saw a post on Facebook.  It expressed the poster's desire to win the lottery and finally be able to make the world a better place.  I was struck by this post because I myself have also purchased lottery tickets while quietly made plans to make the world a better place.

And so, this episode was born.  It asks the question: can winning the lottery really help me become more generous?

It is easy to be dazzled by spectacle, and the Bible is no different. Jesus can walk on water or restore sight to the blind, and suddenly we find ourselves awestruck - incapable of seeing anything by his really amazing miracle. But, often the spectacle is actually keeping us from seeing a more important lesson within the story.
This podcast looks at the miracle of feeding the 5000, attempts to look beyond the obvious, and discover a lesson we might have missed.

The question for this episode was taken from a Reddit group. It caught my attention because it is a question caught between the traditional theological response on one hand, and the observations of everyday believers on the other. Any first-year theology student knows what the answer to this question is supposed to be – if you are following in line with tradition. But as is often the case, the customary answer feels a little too formulaic, and leads me to believe this question is worth a fresh look.

There are those who believe that science is the enemy of faith, and those in the science community who believe that faith is the very antithesis of their chosen field. I have always loved studying science AND theology, and I don’t see my passion for both as needing to be reconciled, but, rather, that they actually compliment each other.

There certainly are differences between the two, but where is the intersection? This episode answers that question.

There are lots of similes and metaphors for the love of God.  This podcast offers three: One taken years ago from our son's preschool classroom, another from a retreat I attended in my early ministry, and the third is my favorite (and of course, my own creation).

This podcast combines a terrifying passage from scripture, another passage we don't talk about very much (concerning the way Jesus died), and some scripture passages that probably get far too much attention. It is an attempt to deal with the Bible openly,  honestly, and reverently, while endeavoring to make sure that everyone is seen as beautiful children of God.

The hymn I Sing a Son of the Saints of God says,
"You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea,
in church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea;
for the saints of God are just folk like me,
and I mean to be one too."
But...what makes someone a saint?  This episode tells the story of a mentor of mine who exhibited what I believe to be an essential trait of anyone who is trying to live a holy or saint-like life.

Paul's letter to the Galatians says that God's followers will display the following traits: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness,  gentleness, and self-control."  Episodes of this podcast have given a lot of attention to love, but perhaps it is time to take a look at the rest of the list.  This episode explores our elusive quest for joy.  It looks at why it is so difficult to achieve joy and it gives a surprisingly easy practice for living a more joy-filled life.

We have all heard it said. Until recently, it was a seemingly kind and hopeful thing to say. In recent years, it has been used a lot in response to quite a few national crises. Now it is frequently seen as a meaningless phrase that is filled with the singular intent of doing nothing. This episode looks at the phrase "thoughts and prayers," and seeks to discern if it should be destined for the linguistic scrapheap or is it, perhaps, worth another look?

For hundreds of years, Double Predestination has been a theological position held by many notable Christians. John Calvin (1509-1564), the reformer, is the person most often associated with this idea. This episode examines what it is, where it came from, and most importantly, why I think it isn’t true.

God forgives sins, but are there any that God won't forgive? If we listen to the words of Jesus from scripture, there is an unforgivable sin. Although the scripture passage is fairly concise in its description, interpreting that passage is not as simple nor as straightforward as we might hope. This episode looks at scripture, tells us what it means, and helps us understand what God hopes will come from it.

Why do some people see God at work in their lives and the world . . . while others never have any experience in which they become aware of God at work? Is this some sort of measure of our level of faith? No, it is simply a result of a psychological phenomenon called "Inattentional Blindness."
This podcast explains what it is, how is was discovered, and offers a simple way to overcome it.

Given the amount of hate that exists in the world today, it seems to be a fundamental part of the human existence. But, what is the role of hate?  Obviously,  at times it is a hurtful and destructive force, but are the exceptions? Are there times when hate is actually godly and righteous? This podcast seeks to answer that question.

The very first miracle performed by Jesus -- that is recorded in the Bible -- revolved around food. After Jesus died and rose again on Easter, he appeared multiple times, and in different settings, to the disciples. At least three of those appearances involved food. Obviously, food played a major role in the ministry of Jesus, and yet there is one moment in his ministry in which that role becomes more important than all the others. This podcast talks about Maundy Thursday and the night Jesus and the disciples had the most important meal of their lives.

Palm Sunday is the day we remember Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Surely it was the pinnacle of success -- at least in terms of his earthly ministry. The disciples surely thought so.  Lurking within this day of fame and adoration for Jesus, is a shadow that reveals something about those of us who follow and proclaim the Christ.  It requires our attention and seeks an answer to a question.

It is a term that perfectly reflects the zeitgeist of our time.  The word is "G.O.A.T.", which is an acronym for "Greatest Of All Time". Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent for Christians . . . in truth, for some Christians. In reality, there are plenty of active, faithful Christians across the globe who don't observe Ash Wednesday. Because of this, there are many people (Christians and non-Christians alike) who have no idea what this holy day is all about. This episode explores the ashes of Ash Wednesday: what they are made of, how they are used, and what they mean.

I recently heard an Elvis Presley song on the radio that I had heard countless times before, and yet, it became obvious that I had never really payed attention to the words. This time around, as I listened, I realized something: the entire song was about the Bible.  Each of the three verses tells a different Bible story.

This episode takes the verses of Hard Headed Woman  - as sung by Elvis - and checks them against scripture, and then explains why this process might be more important than we think.

We recently had a family movie night with our granddaughter during which we watched Soul.  The bad news was that it turned out to be considerably too sophisticated for a 10 year old. On the other hand, the good news was that it turned out to offer a very interesting and powerful lesson at the end of the movie. This podcast explores that lesson and the important message it has for us - particularly now.

Humanity was given some remarkable instincts for survival. Our modern ability to manage various external dangers has all but eliminated some of our most dangerous threats.

Yet, we still have these built-in mechanisms telling us to perceive many non-threatening life experiences as needing drastic action. Can we begin to see our lives as framed by joy and hope rather then danger? This podcast investigates these tenancies and offers  an alternative strategy.

It seems that all the news recently is filled with flags: from the American flag to the wide range of flags carried by the rioters who invaded the U.S. Capitol.

Recently I saw a picture in the news of the American flag being flown upside down.  "Why is someone flying the flag upside down?" I wondered. So I looked into it. Although the story didn't turn out to be particularly interesting, the investigative journey was.

This episode dives into rules regarding the flag, and then uses this conversion as a starting point to talk about the events of January 6th and what God thinks our appropriate reaction should be.

We have been telling the story of Jesus' birth for almost 2000 years, and you would think, by this time, we would know every aspect of the story. And yet, we are easily distracted and so often emphasize the wrong aspects of the story while totally ignoring the most important, radical and, in truth, scandalous aspect of the Christmas narrative. This episode helps us to recapture the scandal of Christmas and reminds us why it is so very important.

The calendar is filled with many holidays:  Christmas, New Year's Day,  Halloween, Easter, and others. But most of them are old and have an origin story far older than the country in which I currently live. Thanksgiving is distinctly American in its origin, but its creation story is shrouded more in myth than in reality. This episode poses a strange question:  Who owns Thanksgiving? And then the episode proceeds to explain why this question is so very important when we talk about this distinctly American holiday.
