I think, as of late, Christians are less and less a people who try to reflect the teachings of Jesus in our daily lives, and more and more we seem to be a people who want Jesus to reflect our own cultural and political favorites.

When Donald Trump calls upon Christians and tells them that, if he wins, they will never vote again, should we believe him or dismiss his promise as silly hyperbole? In 1965, Charles Schultz, the creator of the Peanuts comic strip, released the television show A Charlie Brown Christmas. Most of the show was about Charlie Brown feeling out of sync with the rest of the world around him during the Christmas season and his trying to figure out what “Christmas is really all about. “ In the end, he comes to a breaking point, and literally yells, Isn't there anyone who can tell me what Christmas is all about? “ To which his friend Linus replies, sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you. Linus then famously recites the Christmas story from the gospel of Luke. And though the gospel of Luke does indeed point Charlie Brown to the original Christmas narrative, it, perhaps does not do what Charlie Brown asked for. He doesn't ask for the Christmas story, but instead asks a very specific question: What is Christmas all about? This episode takes the original Christmas story and looks at what Christmas is really all about.

On these occasions I will invariably have someone kindly say, "um,.. you have a smudge on your forehead." In 1950, after a friend experienced the death of a family member, Albert Einstein wrote him a letter of condolence and comfort. In the letter, Einstein described a particular singular focus as being the "one issue of true religion”. One can't help but pay attention when Einstein implies that either a religion deals with this particular issue, or it is a false religion.
This episode shares the quote, reveals the problems with some of his phrasing, and points out why - all in all - he was more right than wrong.

The very first miracle performed by Jesus -- that is recorded in the Bible -- revolved around food. After Jesus died and rose again on Easter, he appeared multiple times, and in different settings, to the disciples. At least three of those appearances involved food. Obviously, food played a major role in the ministry of Jesus, and yet there is one moment in his ministry in which that role becomes more important than all the others. Palm Sunday is the day we remember Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Surely it was the pinnacle of success -- at least in terms of his earthly ministry. The disciples surely thought so. Lurking within this day of fame and adoration for Jesus, is a shadow that reveals something about those of us who follow and proclaim the Christ. It requires our attention and seeks an answer to a question.
There is a term that, although recently added to the English lexicon, can suddenly be heard almost everywhere. It is a term that perfectly reflects the zeitgeist of our time. The word is "G.O.A.T.", which is an acronym for "Greatest Of All Time". This podcast searches for its origin, explains why it is troublesome, and offers an alternative that comes with a LOT less pressure.

We recently had a family movie night with our granddaughter during which we watched Soul. The bad news was that it turned out to be considerably too sophisticated for a 10 year old. On the other hand, the good news was that it turned out to offer a very interesting and powerful lesson at the end of the movie. This podcast explores that lesson and the important message it has for us - particularly now.
Humanity was given some remarkable instincts for survival. Our modern ability to manage various external dangers has all but eliminated some of our most dangerous threats.
Yet, we still have these built-in mechanisms telling us to perceive many non-threatening life experiences as needing drastic action. Can we begin to see our lives as framed by joy and hope rather then danger? This podcast investigates these tenancies and offers an alternative strategy.

It seems that all the news recently is filled with flags: from the American flag to the wide range of flags carried by the rioters who invaded the U.S. Capitol.
Recently I saw a picture in the news of the American flag being flown upside down. "Why is someone flying the flag upside down?" I wondered. So I looked into it. Although the story didn't turn out to be particularly interesting, the investigative journey was.
This episode dives into rules regarding the flag, and then uses this conversion as a starting point to talk about the events of January 6th and what God thinks our appropriate reaction should be.

Albert Einstein died 65 years ago, but his influence continues to be felt -- not just in the field of science -- but as a pop-icon. His picture is found in every corner of the internet as well as adorning dorm walls in universities across the globe.
