AIT Decoded Podcast
Welcome to our podcast series, AIT Decoded. Our goal is to demystify third-level education, enabling you, the student, to make the right CAO choice for you. Over the course of the series, we chat to faculty and support staff, current students and alumni about all of the important topics: researching a college course, students supports, scholarships, sports facilities, accommodation and so much more. New episodes are added regularly, so make sure to check back in.
On episode 56 of our podcast series AIT Decoded we are joined by third year Quantity Surveying student Faye. Faye talks to us about her transition to third level, how supportive her lecturers are and how beneficial the modules she has completed has impacted her work placement. Faye is currently undertaking her placement and encourages everyone to consider working in the construction industry!
On episode 55 on our AIT Decoded Podcast series we are joined by Dr Aisling Keenan who talks to us about the brand new MSc in Digital Marketing which commences in September 2021. This programme will be delivered over a 12-month period.

On episode 40 of our AIT Decoded Podcast series we are joined by work placement coordinator Pat Hannon to talk about this level 7 course. Pat talks about the employment opportunities both in Ireland and abroad and the opportunity for a student to take a work placement overseas.
On episode 39 we are joined by Course Coordinator Miriam O'Connor who gave us a comprehensive description of the level 6 course and discussed how this course can open up to a world of opportunity in the Dental Nursing sector both in Ireland and abroad. Miriam talks about the multidisciplinary skills that will play a key role in dental practices.
On this episode of AIT Decoded, we are joined Tom Bennett to talk about all things Mobile Apps and Connected here in AIT. Tom talks us through the modules a student will cover, the course structure and the different projects and group work students will participate in.
On episode 37, we are joined by Niamh Dunne who talks us through our International Business (with a mandatory language) level 8 course. She gives us an insight into the course and the unique aspects to this programme. Niamh talks about students opportunities to undertake a semester or a year abroad and also the benefits of a 20 week work placement.
Exercise & Health Science Lecturer, Mairead Cantell joined us for episode 36 to discuss the level 7 course. Mairead talks about what a student will experience and the unique job opportunities a graduate of this programme might lead too.
Joe O'Toole, Civil Engineering lecturer joins us for episode 35. Joe provides indepth information both the level 7 and 8 course in AIT. The course content, the structure of the programme, career prospects and lots more.
Bar Supervision lecturer Madeleine Murtagh joined us for episode 34 to provide to detailed overview of this level 6 course and discussed the unique opportunities graduates from this programme have. She talks about the incredible career prospects both here and abroad and how the facilities in AIT equip students with the necessary skill set when seeking employment.
For episode 33 we are joined by Anne Cooney and John Larkin to discuss our General Nursing level 8 course. Both Anne and John provided us with a detailed overview of the course and discussed the course content, the clinical placement throughout the programme and lots more.
On episode 32 Eoin Heffernan talks us through our Graphic Design courses in AIT. He gives an in-depth insight into the assessment requirements our future applicants and the various different types of content a student through the array of modules and the type of job opportunities a graduate will have.
On episode 41 of our podcast series AIT Decoded we are joined by Joe who gave us a comprehensive description of this 4-year programme and its course content, he talks us through the modules and what students will experience. A student will participate in two Work Placement in Year 2 and Year 3. In Year 3 a student is expected to travel overseas.

Quantity Surveying lecturer Alan Duffy joined us for episode 26, he spoke in depth about the modules, the benefits of work placement and the incredible career prospects as a graduate of this programme. He talks about the vast employment opportunities both in Ireland and abroad.
Animation lecturer Yvonne Hennessy talks us through the portfolio requirements for BA (Hons) in Animation and Illustration applicants. Candidates are expected to submit original work, drawings of established cartoon characters and work copied from books should not be included. Yvonne talks us through the types and range of material a applicant should include.

In this episode, lecturer John Benton discusses assessment requirements for graphic design applicants. Candidates must submit their work electronically. He gives his advice on the pieces of work applicants need to submit and reiterates the importance of that work representing the best ability/personality of the applicant. John also talks in detail about the Virtual Project Day which applicants can choose as an alternative mode of assessment.

Patrick McGrath talks us through how he began his studies at 21 and how this was the grounding for his career going forward. He talks about how his work placement brought him to Killarney the hospitality capital of Ireland and this is where he began his blossoming career. He talks about the opportunities of working abroad as he spent a year in Australia and returned to his current role as Operations Manager in the Killarney Plaza.
Accounting graduate Aaron Darcy talks about his experiences of being a student in Athlone Institute of Technology, the transition to third level education and the reason he choose to study at AIT. He talks about modules, the benefits of work placement and what a day in the life of an accountant is like.

Mechanical and Polymer Graduate Cathal McGrath talks about life since graduating in 2019. He speaks about the incredible employment opportunities in a sector that is booming in particular within the medical device sector. He talks about his role as a Design Engineer in CISD, and gives advice to any prospective students hoping to pursue a similar career pathway to himself.
Culinary Arts Graduate David talks to us about the opportunities he has had both academically and professionally since he graduated in 2006. He talks about how he returned to AIT to pursue further studies over the years, including completing a Masters in Business Studies. Professionally he has worked in numerous roles over the years in particular in 5* hotels including the well known Lyrath in Kilkenny, Ballyfin in Laois and Adare Manor in Limerick.
Graduate of our Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Business talks about transferring to Athlone Institute of Technology, the incredible student supports available here and the opportunities he has received as a graduate of this programme. He talks about his current role in Finance at Fidelity International and how the knowledge and skills gained through AIT was a huge benefit when looking for employment.
Business graduate Dermot discusses studying at AIT, the influence his parents had on his CAO application process and his love of sport. He talks about his role of a graduate ambassador within the Marketing and Communications Dept at AIT and how his degree has secured him employment in Australia.
General Nursing graduate Shauna talks us through moving from Connemara to Athlone to pursue her dream of being a nurse, she discusses the benefits of the work placements and the typical day in the life of a nurse in University Hospital Galway. She speaks of the opportunities after completing her Nursing Degree including how she has gone on to further study in Athlone Institute of Technology in a Masters by Research and how the general role of a nurse has changed over the last number of years.
Sports Science with Exercise Physiology graduate Thomas talks about life since graduating in 2018, the different broad array of modules and knowledge he gained through studying this degree. He talks about his placement at Cycling Ireland in 3rd Year and how the theory he learned through the course was applied within the placement! He talks about how the modules and opportunities he received from his undergraduate degree benefited him as he went on to pursue a Masters in Physiotherapy in Edinburgh where he has just started a new job in the NHS.
General Nursing graduate Sinead talks about benefits of work placement, and how this was a highlight for her over the four years. She tells us how the placement gives you the opportunity to experience the different departments and the advantages this has going into your career. As a theatre nurse she tells us for normal daily routine and the gives advice to any prospective students hoping to pursue a career in Nursing!
Pharmacy Technician graduate Eadaoine talked about the move from Dublin to the Midlands, the incredible memories she made in Athlone Institute of Technology and how she wished to relive them all again. She speaks about how the applied practical learning gave her the foundation to secure employment in St James Hospital in Dublin.
Meet Karl, a 4th year Sport Science with Exercise Physiology student from Dublin and also one of our amazing student ambassadors. Karl returned to higher education 4 years ago when he decided to pursue the the four-year BSc (Hons) in Sports Science with Exercise Physiology with us at Athlone Institute of Technology. Listen to his story, as he talks about overcoming his initials fears of making the transition back to education after working in construction for many years. Karl highlights the important role his lecturers played in growing his confidence and instilling the belief that he could achieve what he set to.
