In this reunion episode, we dive deep into their journey from initial experiment to proven practice. Drawing on a decade of experience across industries, cultures, and continents, Sandy and David share how self-selection has evolved to meet modern workplace challenges. What you'll learn: Why trust, ownership, and vision are the three rivers that power successful self-selection How the practice adapted from in-person to remote/hybrid environments What traditional banks and cutting-edge startups have in common when it comes to team formation Where self-selection is headed in an era of AI and fluid team structures Practical steps to start your own self-selection journey Whether you're a seasoned agilist or new to the concept, this episode offers fresh insights into how organizations thrive when people choose their teams. (And yes, we'll answer that burning question: "But what if people make the wrong choice?") As our summer break continues, we are bringing back a classic episode, too good to not bring back!   Join Brad Stokes and Christopher Avery as they discuss The Responsibility Process®. When Christopher Avery was a management consultant, this was his driving question: Why are so many smart people unhappy at work? 20 years ago, Christopher realized that the most useful skills he was teaching his smart, ambitious, professional clients were coping skills. They needed coping skills because they were stuck in a suffocating culture that systematically disempowered and controlled them. An insidious control cycle kept well-meaning, high-performing leaders and key contributors at all levels from doing their best, taking risks, learning, and operating with freedom, power and choice for the organizations’ best interests.   His own career trajectory changed forever when Christopher began working with an emerging behavioral science framework — The Responsibility Process®. This powerful framework is the world's first proven how-to approach for understanding, teaching, and taking personal responsibility. It helps us apply our innate leadership ability to face and overcome any challenge. Operating in freedom, power, and choice, we encourage and support those we lead to do likewise.  Links and Contact Details Twitter:  Facebook:   Website:  LinkedIn:     Join the conversation at  Support the Agile Uprising by making a contribution via

In this episode of the Agile Uprising podcast, host Troy Lightfoot chat with Prateek Singh author of Scaling Simplified and the new course for Product Management "Accelerating Product Value" about taking your product management career to the next level with Probablisitc Thinking and Flow. Troy's Next Product Value Class: "AgileUprising" for 20% off! The episode is rich with insights, making it a valuable listen for anyone involved in organizational change. Probabilistic vs. Deterministic Thinking in Product Management: The discussion highlighted the importance of probabilistic thinking, where multiple future outcomes are considered, rather than deterministic thinking, which often leads to rigid and potentially inaccurate expectations. Challenges with Traditional Product Prioritization: Traditional methods of product prioritization, such as backlog management, are seen as potentially obsolete the moment they are established due to the dynamic nature of market and development realities. Advantages of Rapid Experimentation: Getting ideas to production swiftly and with minimal initial investment allows for direct testing with customers, providing real feedback and reducing the risk of significant investment in unproven ideas. Financial Impact of Flow and Learning: Faster realization of product value through improved flow can significantly enhance ROI, by reducing the costs associated with delays and increasing the effectiveness of learning from the market. The Role of Flow Metrics in Learning Systems: Flow metrics like cycle time and throughput are vital for transforming product development and operations into learning systems, where the speed of learning and adaptation is critical. Concept of Thinking in Bets: The podcast also touched on using the concept of “Thinking in Bets” (from Annie Duke’s work) to manage investment in product development. This approach advocates for small, incremental bets to minimize losses while exploring the potential success of new ideas. In this episode of the Agile Uprising podcast, host Andy Cleff chats with guest Lennie Noiles about the importance of coaching and supervision for agile coaches. They explore the idea of coaching supervision, which focuses on helping coaches reflect on their own practices and improve their coaching skills. Lennie emphasizes the need for coaches to have their own coaches and the benefits of group coaching supervision. The Essence of Coaching Supervision: "Supervision is different, where coaching is partnering, supervision is co-creating... It's a lot of reflection. What did you do in your last session? What was your expectation? How did you intervene? Why did you intervene that way?" — Lennie Noiles [05:27 → 08:47] They also delve into the concept of nature-based coaching, where conversations take place during walks away from distractions, and how this approach can lead to deeper self-awareness and reflection. Lennie shares his journey from agile project manager to leadership coach and discusses the common misconception that teams are the problem when often it's the system they operate within. The Misconception of Agile Coaching: "I kept getting asked this question by people in leadership positions, 'Will you come and fix my team?' And so it's like, okay, well, let me go talk to your team. And more often than not, the conversation that I would have is I spoke with your team. We need to have a different conversation." — Lennie Noiles [01:38 → 02:45] The conversation also touches on the impact of the pandemic on coaching practices and the shift towards a new normal in the business world. Every great man has a great enemy, every great movement a great antagonist. For "agile" that antagonist is typically attributed to Frederick Winslow Taylor, and his book Scientific Management...but SHOULD he be? This week we host a discussion between two people who actually took the time to READ the book, to try and answer the question: "Is the problem Taylorism...or how we're taught to INTERPRET it?" Enjoy!

Discord members Niklas Kari, Mike Caddell, and Janel Lanza welcome fellow agilist Christiaan Verwijs to discuss his recent article on a data-driven approach to discussing SAFe. It's everyone's favorite framework to bash and blame for the issues in our work, and often the arguments are based on anecdotal evidence.

So, when someone decided to do some extensive research on the topic, it got our attention and we wanted to hear more.

Verwijs outlined the research method, how the questions were adapted over time to respond to research participants, and how it's been received so far in the community. Team autonomy is a big part of the data set, as is the reception and reaction of the C-suite.

We're not really sure if the data proves one way or another that SAFe is truly bad. Ultimately, it will likely confirm whatever opinion you have. However, it is vitally important to base impressions on various frameworks on more than emotional evidence. This was an interesting discussion of how.

In a blog post last year, AU board member Chris Murman wrote about loneliness and his experience with the topic in his professional journey. Because they are gluttons for punishment and love discussing their own misery, Jay Hrcsko, and Andrew Leff joined Murman to start the new year off with an emotional blood-letting.

Along the way, the three discuss:

  • How comfortable we all are with the topic.
  • The difference between loneliness and being alone.
  • Is it possible to tell if someone is lonely?
  • What do we say when we see it in ourselves and others?
  • Some ways to turn loneliness into an opportunity to connect with others.

It was a fantastic chat because the more we destigmatize the topic (like others in the past 20 years), the easier it is to bring up loneliness to others in our lives. As we begin 2023 anew, please share this episode with others because you never know who it could have a positive impact on. This is Murman speaking here, and I'm so thankful to have these two gentlemen in my life to walk through the challenging stuff. If it didn't come out enough in the pod, I wouldn't be the person I am today without friends like them.

Not long ago, Chris Murman and Jay Hrcsko recorded a podcast about some of the mistakes or failures Murman has made in his agile journey. Perhaps it wasn't an outright fail, but definitely coaching he wished he could have a do-over. It is part of a larger conversation we have been having at AU for quite some time. We even wish we could host a conference devoted solely to failure bows.

It definitely become a fiery topic since the pandemic to realize the ways of working most held dear weren’t always the case anymore. And yet we hold them as always true. So Murm put the call out on Twitter for someone else to join me in the conversation. Treasured peer and friend Paul Tevis answered the Bat Signal, and we thank him for his bravery.

Join Murman and Tevis as they discuss why it's so tough to discuss failure in an industry that claims to embrace it. What were some moments we wish we could do over again, and why it's important to find those moments? Recognizing the opportunity to use regret is the key to taking huge leaps forward together.

And what about firmware, which is a niche few talk about? How do you get agile firmware between agile software and agile hardware? This week we sit down with esteemed author David Bishop to discuss his book Metagility, where he unpacks all the above and more!

During this special (belated) Valentine's Day episode Lyssa Adkins, Debbie Madden, Brad Stokes, Troy Lightfoot and Andy Cleff have a lively panel discussion on how they use their agile mindsets, those values, and beliefs - in their daily lives:

  • With their partners
  • Their children
  • On Thanksgiving and Christmas
  • But, alas not with their pets. (Would have given agility training for fido a whole new meaning!)

Nothing was off the table… well, maybe some things… they kept the episode SFW as they took Software Development out of the Manifesto...

And shared how they apply the guiding principles outside of the team room.

Often our community speaks of the work Robert Greenleaf did over 50 years ago in hushed tones. Servant Leadership is something prevalent in most training classes, conference presentations, and blogs across the globe. Do we really know what it means, and understand all the challenges that prevent its ability to thrive?

Join AU board member Chris Murman, AU community members Jon Schneider and Stephen Kellogg as we debate what servant leadership is and is not, the environment needed for leaders to serve people they lead, and in the end decide: is this really a thing?

You can't trip and fall in Enterprise IT these days without someone mentioning the "C" word...and we're not talking about croissants. In the 2021 State of Agile Coaching Report, experienced coaches were twice as likely to be external to organizations. Meaning they were consultants versus hiring a full-time employee. It raised some interesting questions to explore about the state of the field and what the future of agile coaching was:

  • What are the reasons why a coach would want to stay an FTE versus becoming a consultant?
  • Are there varied benefits to having both internal coaches as well as external consultants working in your organization?
  • What exactly are the differences in both?
  • Did the pandemic and quarantine specifically impact the agile coaching profession?
  • If I'm looking to become an agile coach, what are the various paths I could take in order to get there?

Join host Chris Murman and a motley crew of people willing to take his verbal abuse to discuss this topic: Jon Schneider, Todd Thrash, and Stephen Kellogg as well as fellow AU board members James Gifford and Jay Horsecantspellhisnamecorrectly. It's an irreverent and uncensored conversation that lays open the challenges the agile coaching profession faces today as well as some hope for the future.

Vasco Duarte, Brad Stokes and James Gifford discuss how the Scrum Master role will change the world of work.

Scrum Masters are people who care about improving the world of work (they do that with their teams every day) and are committed to that mission. Unfortunately some reason, people feel “ashamed” of being called Scrum Master, and quickly change to Agile Coach in their title. However, they should be proud of their work as Scrum Masters! The three delve into the world of collaboration and creating cooperative, creative workplaces.

Vasco is organising an event for Scrum Masters (specifically for that role): http://scrummastersummit.org/, and with the goal to help Scrum Masters be proud of their role and actively contribute to improving the world of work.

Vasco recently wrote about the vision of the transformation he sees coming in the article named: "Scrum Masters are the future CEO’s”, and would like to have the opportunity to share this message, as well as promote the event to your audience. https://scrum-master-toolbox.org/2021/01/blog/scrum-masters-are-the-future-ceos-and-a-podcast-by-the-lean-enterprise-institute/

Staying sane during Covid? Kinda over-rated.

It's been over 5 months of lockdown for all of us and dealing with situations we never ever considered we'd have to live thru.

In this episode, we chat about maintaining at least a facade of doing ok - as extroverts and introverts.

Self-care strategies to get through each and every day, like Jay's roller skates.

Might be NSFW due to adult language.

This week's episode is all FLOW, FLOW, FLOW!  Andy Cleff and Jay Hrcsko are joined by fellow agile coach Jeff Pray to discuss two of the concepts he uses while coaching the concept of flow in the enterprise.  His Flow Manifesto is a re-imagining of the Agile Manifesto but specific to the concept of flow, and his white-paper on Flow-based Leadership is how Jeff escapes teaching leaders and executives all the agile jargon by simply teaching them why "flow" is important to them.  Enjoy!
