In today's scripture Jesus challenges the religious leaders to step into true freedom. In order to do that, they need to step out of self-deception, be honest with Jesus, and then let Him set them free.

Jesus was very passionate about the temple being a place of holiness. He displayed huge amounts of emotion, and was driven to purify His Father's temple. In his letter to the church in Sardis, Jesus urges the christians to wake up. They had a great start, but slowly let their light die out. If they don't burn again, He'll remove their names from the book of life!

This week's passage is the second letter from Jesus in Revelation. He holds nothing against this church, but at first glance the letter seems fairly grim.
Jesus presents the Church in Smyrna with an interesting path to follow. They've remained faithful during the storms, but a bigger storm is on the horizon. He calls them to trust in him for a short while longer, and their reward will be the crown of life. Are we willing to build our faith before the storm comes? Do we believe that Jesus is good even when times are tough?

As we venture into one of the final episodes of Season 3 of the Uncommon Truth, we realize how similar we are to the disciples. After Jesus' death and resurrection his disciples still had their mind on their own kingdoms. Jesus, however, had a different plan in mind.

When it comes to the topic of forgiveness, many Christians resemble children playing on the playground; we want people to share it with us, but we don’t want to have to share it with them. Often, the same theme holds up when it comes to our own forgiveness.
In the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant, a man is forgiven a great debt. Yet just a few verses later, the same debt is put back on him when he fails to forgive someone in the same way. It’s called Refuse Ordinary, it’s hosted by Tamara Loewen, and it dives into some of the wisdom she’s gleaned during her time at the Father’s House School of Transformation. It’s called Refuse Ordinary because it’s all about rejecting a lifeless and distant faith in favor of the real, radical and vibrant relationship with Jesus that he desires to have with us.

In the third chapter of the book of John, Jesus is met by man named Nicodemus. Nicodemus is seeking the Kingdom of Heaven, but can’t see it. He knows Jesus is his best shot at finding this Kingdom, but the answer he gets shocks him.
The term “Born Again,” is one that is often used to describe certain groups or individuals in Christianity today. But when was the last time you took a look at what that term actually means? Or, more importantly, what it would look like if you were to experience this new birth? Yet this is the exact thing Jesus says must happen for us to be able to even see His Kingdom.

In the Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids (Matthew 25), Jesus tells the story of ten bridesmaids awaiting the arrival of the groom so they can all enter the wedding feast that’s being prepared. The bridesmaids who planned ahead met the groom with lit lamps and entered the feast, while those who were not ready missed out.
What does that mean for us today? Does simply knowing Jesus is on His way qualify us to enter into this wedding feast? Or do we have to actually plan how we are going to continue loving and following Him?

In Jesus’ parable about two sons asked to go work in their father’s vineyard, we learn a lot about what is valuable in the Kingdom of Heaven. Here Jesus confronts the religious leaders of His day with a question: “Which son did the will of his father?”

The parables of Jesus are some of the most memorable and often-quoted passages of His teachings. It was very common for Jesus to express some of the most critical concepts using simple stories and examples. But do we always get the point?

In this episode we’re joined by Murray and Ash Smith, lead pastors at Catch The Fire in Raleigh-Durham North Carolina. The Smiths joined The Uncommon Truth as part of their visit to Oroville where they were guest teaching at the School of Transformation. Murray and Ash have a passion for the Holy Spirit and love to help lead people into the freedom of who Jesus created them to be.
Freedom is one of the big selling points of a life spent following Jesus. In Galatians, Paul writes, “It is for freedom the Christ has set us free.” So what is this freedom, and how do we experience it in real life?

Pastor Tony Kim joined the Uncommon Truth after spending time guest speaking at the School of Transformation. Tony and his wife Jessica are the leaders at Renaissance church in Bakersfield, California. Tony is the US National Director at Harvest International Ministry (HIM) and the founder and leader of Roar Collective and Roar Academy.
The Kim’s journey to Bakersfield mirrors Steve and Vicki’s in many ways. Bakersfield, like Oroville, has a notorious reputation for poverty, crime and hopelessness. For the past two decades, however, God has been using Tony & Jessica’s “yes” to transform the city, and the impact has been worldwide. In this episode, Tony shares some stories about following Jesus through some incredible circumstances. He asks the question, “If we’re not risking anything, are we following the right Jesus?”

In Christianity, we focus a lot on the moment we first met Jesus. We also look forward to eternal life after we die. But when it comes to our lives on earth, here and now, what’s the purpose?

When you think about the word “authority,” what comes to mind? Odds are, it’s not positive. Why is that? As Christians, we all want to be part of a church or a movement that is accomplishing God’s will, but we’re less excited when it comes to following someone else’s vision to fulfill it.

When it comes to the idea of salvation, the New Testament is pretty clear. Unfortunately, within the Church itself, there seems to be a fair bit of confusion. When we talk about salvation, and what it takes to be saved, what do we even mean?
Is simply being a good person enough to guarantee your ticket to Heaven when you die? Or is it all about finding financial security and worldly success in this life? If the Bible is true, we’re going to need to know what it takes to be saved.

Forgiveness is simultaneously a beautiful and terrifying word in Christianity. Most of us recognize and embrace our own forgiveness; but when it comes to forgiving those who hurt or offend us, most of us are not so eager.

Talking about thankfulness around this time of year may feel a little cliché, but in 2020 of all years, it is important to practice gratitude. It certainly has been a difficult year so far, but the practice of thanksgiving can actually unlock a multitude of blessing.
Our enemy the devil certainly does not want followers of Jesus to experience the abundant life that Jesus promised, and that is why giving thanks can sometimes feel like a battle. The act of remembering all that we’ve been blessed with––instead of focusing on what we lack––is the key to victory.

It shouldn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out the meaning of the word, “love.” At least that is what we think. But odds are the word has probably lost its meaning to us. We use the term to refer to vastly different things; how can they all have the same meaning?
The truth is there’s actually a difference between the love for coffee and sunsets and the love that we show our children or parents. So what does it mean when we say we love God? For that matter, what does He mean when He says that He loves us?

A quick reading through the New Testament reveals dozens of warnings against false teachers and their “new gospels.” In many places where Jesus’ disciples shared His good news, false teachers were quick to try to get these new believers to trust in something else.
Today is not so different. In present day Christianity, there are a lot of things competing for our trust. We are quick to put our trust in money, education, or the government, and we often save the real good news of Jesus for last. What would it look like to put our trust entirely in Jesus and His true gospel?

As Christians, how should we approach life’s inevitable troubles and disappointments? From everyday struggles to catastrophic loss, life can definitely be disappointing at times. Do we hope these troubles won’t happen to us, or pretend everything is fine? Or do we let them derail our faith and cast doubt on what we believe?
When it comes to dealing with disappointment, we can learn a lot from the life of Jesus. He Himself faced the rejection of His own people, betrayal by close friends, and an excruciating death. If we can adopt His perspective on disappointment, a whole new life opens up to us.

“Whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do.” These are Jesus’ words to His disciples before His death and resurrection. Do we believe them? What do they mean for us today?

Christianity is all about relationships. It’s not about what you know, but who you know. When it comes to relating to God as our Heavenly Father, however, a lot of us have a hard time.
We all have different experiences with fathering––some are good, some are not so good. Yet Jesus made it clear that we are to act as if we have a real Father in Heaven. We are expected to look to Him for protection and provision, and as we grow, join in his family business as sons and daughters. How can we make God our Father when our understanding is so different?

Studies show that, in various important categories, Christian relationships are not that distinguishable from the rest of the culture. From divorce rates and pornography use to views on premarital sex and cohabitation; the numbers are almost identical to those of our neighbors.
If our lives as Christians need to reflect Jesus, then shouldn't our romantic relationships represent Jesus too? If Jesus is supposed to change and renew every aspect of our individual lives, shouldn't our relationship exemplify this as well? So why is that so often not the case, and how can we change it?

COVID-19, protests, rioting and economic collapse; with everything going on so far in 2020, does the Church have a voice and a message that the world needs right now?
In Matthew 23, Jesus rebuked the Pharisees with several "woes." His main criticism of the religious leaders of the day was that they were in danger of missing out on the Kingdom of God. Not only that, Jesus said, but they were actively preventing their people from entering the Kingdom as well.
Fast forward to today, and the warning is just as applicable to Christians today. Are we leading people closer to Jesus or further away? Are we trusting in Jesus or something else like politics, economics or social standing? As Jesus' conversation with the Pharisees shows, there is a lot on the line.

The topic of forgiveness is not a very popular one, even within Christianity. Most of us are eager to accept forgiveness, but we rarely focus on those whom we need to forgive. So what does Jesus have to say about it?

It doesn't take a statistician or sociologist to figure out that the institutions of Christianity are on the decline in the Western world. Falling numbers, decreasing cultural relevance, and lessening political voice all paint a picture of a religion in decline. More and more people are leaving organized religion, and even casual knowledge of the Bible is uncommon.
So how do we interpret this as Christians? Is it all doom and gloom, or is there an opportunity to seize the cultural moment? If the early Church could succeed, against all odds, without any of the advantages we have today, what must we do? Do we isolate ourselves, accommodate the world around us, or choose a new way?

A couple episodes ago, Max and Steve discussed the epidemic that is the culture of victimhood in the West. This week, Max is joined by TFHC pastor Lisa Bowers who shares about something she calls the orphan-victim-martyr cycle and how to combat it.
Lisa points out that, as Christians, we are not immune from flawed thinking. When we get stuck in a mindset that puts too much focus on what we lack, it can quickly spiral in our lives. Operating out of isolation and unhealthy independence is a symptom of an orphan spirit at work. This often leads to feelings of victimhood, and eventually, the outlook that makes our sacrifices for the Kingdom all about ourselves. This is not what Jesus exemplified in His own life, death and resurrection.

This week is a special episode for the Uncommon Truth. For the first time, Max sits down with Steve Orsillo and his wife, Vicki, to have a discussion about faith in the midst of difficult times. Steve and Vicki founded The Father’s House Church in Oroville over twenty years ago. Though they display joy and peace in private and public, their lives have been far from easy. This past week, the Orsillos lost their granddaughter, Avalynn Hope Wallace, to her fight with leukemia. They have lost businesses and watched fire take their house, and each time their faith has increased. Together, they share stories of how their faith has grown in each difficult circumstance.
In the West, difficulties and suffering are often seen as indictments of our faith. We tend to take tough circumstances as a sign that God is not with us, or that we are walking outside His will. Yet, Jesus never promised His followers would have easy lives. He promised His Spirit would be with them, giving them His strength, comfort, and authority. The Orsillos have made it their goal to live in a way that makes this obvious.

Accountability is a commonly heard buzz word in Christian circles, but defining what it looks like can be difficult. Most of us know that following Christ is not something that we can do in isolation, but beyond that, there is not much that is agreed upon. Generally speaking, being open and honest with personal struggles is not something that comes easy to Christians in the West, and the news is littered with tales of leaders who have fallen without accountability.

In recent years, Western society has become enmeshed in a narrative that defines a person or group's value based on their perceived victim status. We find ourselves in a cultural moment that seems to elevate how much someone has been oppressed, slighted or marginalized. The consequence seems to be a heightened sense of individual entitlement, bitterness and selfishness.
In contrast, Jesus and the Christians of the early Church represent quite the opposite. Despite real persecution, none of these played the "victim card." Christians, by definition, are followers of Christ. One of the ways the Jesus described Himself was as Truth embodied; He is the way, the truth and the life. We might not realize it, but this is a radical claim. Claiming to be the incarnation of Truth is a big deal.
Yet today, the more radical part of this claim might be the assertion that something called truth actually exists. We live in a culture and time that has left truth behind. Feelings, relativism and opinions are more important than ever. After all, as the saying goes, "Just because it's true for you doesn't mean it's true for me."
Sarah Budd has a keen mind and a unique perspective on how our worldview in the West has shaped our view of Jesus and truth in particular. She joins the show to share some of her wisdom.

In today's day and age, Christianity is increasingly seen as easy, simple and undemanding. In a world that prioritizes selfishness and ease, the Christian faith in the West is gradually becoming more self-centered while asking less of its adherents. However, all it takes is a quick glance through the New Testament to see that we have taken a wrong turn somewhere. We all want to grow in our faith and take hold of eternal life, but are we willing to give up something to get them?
Jesus called those who would follow Him to lay down their lives, pick up crosses and sacrifice for others. Those who knew Jesus best ran headlong into suffering and persecution with joy, and they changed the world. How do we go about changing the world in the midst of a culture that makes it all about ourselves? Steve shares wisdom about how to combat our worldview, grow in faith and change our hearts in pursuit of Jesus.

Recently, a listener left a review for the show that was less than glowing. This listener was concerned that the subject matter of The Uncommon Truth was focused more on, "Doing" rather than, "Being." In other words, too much discussion of what we should be doing for Jesus and not enough talk of resting in Jesus.
Instead of speaking less of what believers need to be working towards, Steve's view is that Christians should be focusing more and more on manifesting the work Jesus did on earth. However, this work needs to be motivated by what Jesus has accomplished for us, not as a way to earn our way to Him. As Steve often says, "I am owed nothing, I deserve nothing. I owe Him everything, and I get to work for Jesus."

The focus of the Uncommon Truth has always been a diligent search for Christianity authentically lived out. Nothing fits that description better than the lives of Geordie and Stefanie Mumby. Since The Uncommon Truth debuted in April, Geordie has been a regular co-host of the show. It was around that same time that he received a dire cancer diagnosis.
Rather than sink into despair or victimhood, both Geordie and Stefanie have focused on serving and loving Jesus. It is a recognition that authentic Christianity has very little to do with what Jesus can offer them, and much more to do with how they can bring glory and honor to Jesus. It is easy to talk about these things in abstract, as is usually the case on the show. Watching a whole family walk it out daily is a different story.

Wrapping up a loose series on the uncomfortable sayings of Jesus, Max is joined by Chloe Wellsand to discuss the sometimes overlooked topic of forgiveness. Chloe comes from near Cardiff in Wales, UK and is on pastoral staff at The Father’s House. Her work includes prayer ministry and teaching in the School of Transformation, and her hometown—The Vale of Glamorgan—is also the hometown of some of the elves from the Lord of the Rings (probably).
Max and Chloe talk about how the topic of forgiveness has been overlooked, or at least misunderstood, in the Church in general. While the idea of receiving Christ’s forgiveness is probably pretty familiar to most Christians, what Jesus says about our role in forgiving others is not quite as common. What does Jesus mean when He says, “Forgive and you shall be forgiven?” As His followers, how are we supposed to respond?

The Uncommon Truth got off the ground in the beginning when Max pitched the idea of a podcast to Danielle Devine in the business office at The Father's House Church. Now, a few months later, Danielle joins to share some stories about her time in the ministry. As Steve and Vicki Orsillo's youngest daughter, Danielle has been involved in the ministry since the age of 4, so she's seen it all.
After setting California state scoring records in high school basketball, Danielle went on to become an all-Pac 10 player at Arizona State University. She married Derek, an aspiring NFL quarterback, and was projected to be drafted in the first round of the WNBA draft. On the podcast Danielle discusses several, "moments of insanity," where she said yes to Jesus despite how crazy it seemed. The world might think following Jesus makes no sense. Yet when looking back, so much of what happens at The Father's House can be tracked back to Danielle just saying yes to Jesus.

In a new segment, Max welcomes School of Transformation teacher and alum Jessica Zeppi to talk about her experience in the school and her journey at The Father's House. She shares about meeting SOT director (and podcast guest) Geordie Mumby in Toronto and knowing there was something different about The Father's House. In the six years since, Jessica has gotten married, began helping with the school and has joined the church's pastoral staff.
In the main part of the episode, Steve is back from a cruise he was actually paid to go on! He talks about sailing to Alaska and reminisces about the Apollo 11 moon landing which happened 50 years ago this past weekend. Continuing the theme of the uncomfortable sayings of Jesus, Steve and Max discuss what Jesus actually says about how the Kingdom of God will make its way to Earth. Sometimes we can become frustrated when the promised Kingdom doesn't seem to be getting any closer, both in our own lives and in the communities around us. Are we just supposed to be patient and wait, or do we have a role to play as individual believers in making it happen?

Max is joined in studio by special guest Johnny Bowers. Johnny shares about how he found Jesus at The Father's House and the School of Transformation after years as the frontman for a heavy metal band. The discussion centers around the ways in which we often mischaracterize Jesus in the West. The commonplace view of Jesus is as a passive, inoffensive teacher who never crossed anyone. However, reading the New Testament shows a much different picture.
How does our view of Jesus effect how we live our lives? Do misconceptions surrounding Jesus harm our relationship with Him? Is Jesus just a nice guy you can choose to listen to or ignore? If He's more just the fluffy caricature our culture portrays Him as, we need to know. Johnny points out that a great way to get to know the real Jesus, and therefore God as well, is to read the gospels.

In the final episode the series on discipleship, Max and Steve explore the cost of following Jesus. Many Christians have found themselves following Jesus without ever being warned of what that entails. Steve points out that the life of discipleship is not just for “super Christians”; discipleship is actually just regular Christianity.
When considering what it takes to follow Jesus, the obvious verses about carrying your cross and leaving your family are often cited. Steve goes beyond the obvious, however. He makes the point that the cost of following Jesus is paid in almost every aspect of your life. Hypocrisy, selfishness and double lives are no longer options for disciples. Every little detail of your life needs to reflect your imitation of Christ if you want to be His disciple. This is the cost Jesus asks us to add up before we commit to following Him.

In his final moments on earth, Jesus commanded his followers to engage in the practice of making disciples. This command is what we like to call, “the great commission,” today, and most of us could even quote it verbatim. Yet a definition of terms is necessary to make sure our way of making disciples today matches with what Jesus had in mind.
In this episode, the first in a multi-part series on discipleship, Max and Steve start with the basics: what is the definition of a disciple? Is a disciple just the title given to someone who has believed in Jesus? When we look at that through our 21st Century, Western worldview that does not seem like anything to be concerned about. After his resurrection, Jesus promised to send his disciples His Holy Spirit. He actually commanded them to wait for this before doing anything else. Fast forward to the present day and believers still have access to the same Spirit, however, do we depend on Him?
While we are familiar with some of what the Spirit does, many in the Western Church have a hard time identifying the reason why Jesus sent us his Spirit in the first place. Is the Holy Spirit meant to be our sidekick, helping us accomplish whatever we put our minds to? Is there a bigger purpose to his presence within us?

How does our understanding of salvation impact the way we live? This week on The Uncommon Truth, Max is joined by a special guest, Geordie Mumby, to discuss that question. Geordie is an associate pastor at The Father's House and the director of the church's School of Transformation.
Max and Geordie build on last week's conversation about a biblically consistent salvation theology, which is not very common in the Western Church. They talk about the outcomes of living that out in a believer's life, and in the Church in general. Geordie brings examples from his life growing up and the contrast he found after encountering Jesus.
