I love Mission Impossible and only saw them for the first time 2 years ago. Mission Impossible movies are remarkable for a reason. Disney's The Little Mermaid (2023) | Worth the Watch? - Episode 175
The Little Mermaid has been a Disney classic for decades, and in the age of live action remakes this was one that was inevitable. However, Halle Bailey's casting was sadly surrounded in controversy. But this movie has it all for Disney's live action age - new "real" CGI, new songs, song remakes, new actors, and giant budget.
So, the question is - is it worth the watch?
The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. With mermaids forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

Suzume | Animation Hall of Fav Volume 3
Makoto Shinkai is a director whose work I have come to love. It is hard to explain the excitement a new release from him brings me. But I was nervous after my disappointment with Weathering With you I didn't want to be let down again. So I went in with caution, and that caution was quickly forgotten as I was amazed by this film.
Suzume is a real depiction of our collective emotional vulnerabilities even if we don't want to admit it. We are feeling the changes of the world and want to preserve all that is good. Suzume tackles those feeling with it's amazing characters and story, with beautiful animation and an incredibly talented voice cast.
In short - I loved it.

Suzume, 17, lost her mother as a little girl. On her way to school, she meets a mysterious young man. But her curiosity unleashes a calamity that endangers the entire population of Japan, and so Suzume embarks on a journey to set things right.

Animation Hall of Fav cannot happen without interruptions. When this year's season was delayed, I thought that would be enough - but it wasn't so here is a second attempt to start it up again.

Now an Academy Award Winner!!
I love stop motion, and I was expecting this to be the winner of Animation Hall of Fav, but now I'm not so sure. It is remarkable animation, a impressive and compelling adaptation of a classic story that tells a powerful message - these are all the things I love talking about on The Basement Binge, but something didn't quite click - until it did (about the end of the episode).

Creed | Creed 3 - Episode 165
This has been my most anticipated film of the first part of the year. Creed blew me away and I couldn't wait to see what Michael B. Jordan would do with it as a first-time director. Additionally, Jonathan Majors has been taking over my mind as a new Hollywood powerhouse. All to say, Creed 3 was looking quite promising.
I was giddy anticipating 3.3.23 and the day finally came, I was blown away. Ecstatic to review this, and then sneak out to go see it again. Here are my thoughts on the marvelous 🙃 Creed III

Creed | Creed 2 - Episode 164
I have been looking forward to this "binge" for a long time. I loved the first Creed and Creed 3 has been one of my most anticipated films of the year. To say I was excited to finally see Creed 2 would be to understate it. But as I revisited the first film and was reminded of its greatness, doubt began to creep in. I wasn't sure if they would be able to repeat something so great, especially without Ryan Coogler. Suddenly rating percentages and star averages started to make me question the potential.
It finally came to watch Creed 2, just in time to catch my show time for Creed 3. And while I'm fighting to hold my tongue about Creed 3, I am happy to be talking about Creed 2.

Creed | Creed 1 - Episode 163
Rocky has meant a lot to me for a long time, but for some reason Creed went under my radar for too long. When I finally did see Creed I knew it was something remarkably special, I couldn't wait to review it on the podcast as I knew I would have some things to say about its impactful emotional scenes.

Dark of the Moon, a ridiculous title that is also accurate, this film is darker and one that I remember the least. In this generally poor regarded film, were we able to find anything worthy praising, or are well all just rotten?
The Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and to learn its secrets.

When I was in film school, I felt my appreciation for Transformers and Michael Bay's filmmaking was invalid, as it was lacking in "artistic substance". That was how the Basement Binge started. So I am stoked to finally be binging Transformers.
The Autobots must stop a colossal planet consuming robot who goes after the Autobot Matrix of Leadership. At the same time, they must defend themselves against an all-out attack from the Decepticons.

I've been looking forward to this series for a while, a new character with a different spirit than what we've seen in the MCU. While school took me away from a weekly review, I couldn't leave the series alone and loved it every week.
Kamala is a superhero fan with an imagination, particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel; Kamala feels like she doesn't fit in at school and sometimes even at home, that is until she gets superpowers like the heroes she's looked up to.

Lupin III, you either know who that is and why this is a fun film, or you have no idea. Kind of like the Japanese James Bond, since his inception by Monkey Punch in 1967 by Monkey Punch, Lupin III has had a world of adventures in all his animated adaptations. But never in 3DCG. Lupin III: The First as it is appropriately named is his first adventure in new animation, and it's wicked good.
Lupin III goes on a grand adventure to uncover the secrets of the Bresson Diary, which is tied to the legacy of his famous grandfather.

Kung Fu Panda, I was not expecting to have this much to say. But when a film is this visually stunning and thematically rich there is a lot worth mentioning. It's funny, has a great voice cast, is stuffed with saturated sunsets, and tells a heartfelt story - Kung Fu Panda, in the words of Po "IS AWESOME!"
To everyone's surprise, including his own, Po, an overweight, clumsy panda, is chosen as protector of the Valley of Peace. His suitability will soon be tested as the valley's arch-enemy is on his way.

Interstella 5555:The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem - the first film of 2022 and the start of "Animation Hall of FAV #2" or Animation Season 2.
I can not think of a better way to start this year. The animated House Musical for Daft Punk's second album Discovery and created in collaboration with legendary Animation Director/Writer Leiji Matsumoto. A beautiful combination of music, story and animation to craft a film unlike anything else and full of love for the format of animation.
It's basically a Sci-Fi Daft Punk Anime.
A continuation of the story told in the Daft Punk music videos "One More Time," "Aerodynamic," "Digital Love," and "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger."

For Peter Parker, life is busy. Between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen Stacy, high school graduation cannot come quickly enough. Peter has not forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away, but that is a promise he cannot keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro, emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

The Amazing Spider-Man; too soon Sony? Probably, this is a moderately competent Spider-Man film with some fantastic elements mostly ruined by how quickly it came after some as solid as Sam Rami's trilogy.
After Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically altered spider, he gains newfound, spider-like powers and ventures out to save the city from the machinations of a mysterious reptilian foe.

West Side Story (2021) is one of the most anticipated films for the last 2 years for me. On a Friday night, I sat in a theater with about 15 other people (sad) and this is what I thought.
Long story short, it is excpetionally crafted and you should go see it.
An adaptation of the 1957 musical, West Side Story explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. Directed by Steven Spielberg.

Coraline - the movie I was most excited for with this 'Halloween Binge' because, after Kubo, I'm a lifelong fan of Laika so I've been very excited to see the film that it all started with. Dune - as I was driving to the theater I told my wife "this still doesn't feel real that we are about to see the movie." I've been waiting for years to finally get this. Denis Villeneuve is my favorite director and 3 years ago I heard about Dune so I read Frank Herbert's book and fell in love. "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas" has been a film I've had questions about for years! Is it a Christmas or Halloween movie? Why do people love this movie so much? To the point that Jack Skellington is basically his own brand of clothing and merch. What about this strange and dark holiday movie is so endearing that just about everyone knows about it, and would name it when asked for Halloween movies?
All these questions could not be answered on my own. So huge thank you to Ali for joining me early in the morning all the way from Iran. His love for the film and insights about it made this a really fun episode to record and changed my opinion of the film!

Venom: Let There Be Carnage - What a weird concept of characters and stories and ideas. Comic books, and their ideas at some of the weirdest. So Andy Serkis and Tom Hardy decide to let it be that and to make it happen in under 100 minutes without wasting time for the unessential.
It just isn't for. I've got nothing against it, just not what I am interested in. But if you are interested in Venom or Carnage as characters/ideas you will probably love this.

Real Steel has got some serious realness to it. One of those films that always wanted to see as a kid, and last year I finally did. It totally lived up to the excitement of Robot Boxing, but surprised me with the level of heart it had and how much I was emotionally touched by the film. These characters feel like people, have relatable experiences, not characters. It's something that allows the film to last much longer than you would think.
It's cliché and totally predictable, but that's a good thing, because in this underdog story - the underdog is someone who you really want to win.
So let's talk about what makes Real Steel so real!

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Probably the film I had the least amount of expectations for. I was looking forward to it (because I like new movies in the theater) but I wouldn't say I was super excited about it. Wow I was wrong. This is a blast to watch, and everyone should go see it. It's funny, has great action, and adds fantastic characters to an already rich MCU. Can't wait for more of the Ten Rings.

Cruella, a film that I hadn't given much thought to, but purchased tickets anyway, just to see Emma Stone and Cruella. Being back in a theater delivered on that premise 110% and gave me so much more to love! Here is why I think this might be one of the most entertaining films I have seen this year!

How can I even begin to talk about Your Name (Kimi no Na wa)? For the longest time, it has felt like an insurmountable task. Too much too good to ever be able to provide any justice to this amazing film. How can I convey the jaw-dropping beauty of the 2D animation or the emotional heart of the incredible score from RADWIMPS, let alone trying to express anything coherent of the power that this story tells? But I couldn't let this "Unintentional Animation Season" come to its end without getting to a film as great as Your Name.
This is something special, even magical, and more people need to see it. Beyond that, I just need to get these thoughts out of my head, because it's keeping me up at night. Something THIS good deserves to be talked about nonstop! It is a simple idea but told with just perfection, and heart that you fall right in love with the rest of the characters.

Continuing on with this unintentional animation Binge, we have - Missing Link from Laika Studios. I've heard some pretty sad things about this film, especially considering it lost about $80 Million Dollars at the Box office. It was on Hulu so I streamed it, hoping to find some great reason to call it a Hidden Gem.
After that first watch, I was quite harsh. But a second watch with my nephew, I came around. So this is what I thought!

For years I have been seeing that dumb ad on IMDb claiming that Chaos Walking was "unreleasable" just to get a great trailer and a release date in March 2021 during a global Pandemic. My love for Daisy Ridley was something that made me want this project to finally happen. Then to learn Doug Liman was directing, I was genuinely excited. He may not be the best working director, but he has skills for fun popcorn flicks with great action and awesome world-building. Add the always great Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland and it seemed pretty good. Like I said I really liked that trailer. So this past weekend, my wife and I got our tickets and a full popcorn bucket and saw Chaos walking.
Here are my thoughts completely spoiler-free, if this is something you are deciding to see or not. If you have seen it and want to hear more, I do get into a bit of spoiler talk in the last few segments.
In the not-too-distant future, Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland) discovers Viola (Daisy Ridley), a mysterious girl who crash lands on his planet, where all the women have disappeared and the men are afflicted by "the Noise" - a force that puts all their thoughts on display. In this dangerous landscape, Viola's life is threatened - and as Todd vows to protect her, he will have to discover his own inner power and unlock the planet's dark secrets. Kubo and the Two Strings from Laika, come onto my radar quite a while ago, as I was browsing through the Wikipedia page of Travis Knight (Director) because of his Director position with Bumblebee. It was a time in my life when I was beginning to be exposed to a lot more than just blockbusters. Nonetheless, Kubo remained a low priority on my watch list, because I never wanted to pay money to rent it.
With this recent fix I have had on watching these animated films that have been on my watchlist for far too long, Kubo finally earned its turn. I am so glad that it did, and that I decided to watch it for The Basement Binge. It is already one of my new favorites and is just about perfect for the segments of the Basement Binge. So lets FALL IN.

Fantastic Mr. Fox was the first in a long list of Blu Rays on my shelf I could not wait to get to. Having been recommended it by a great friend with a similar sense of humor years ago, I couldn't wait. But it had to wait for the podcast schedule.
The time finally came, and after watching, I realized that as much as I loved it I wasn't really sure what to think. Some acclimation was definitely needed. (Since recording I have rewatched it and for sure love it).
Here is my review of Fantastic Mr. Fox
This is the story of Mr. Fox (George Clooney) and his wild-ways of hen heckling, turkey taking, and cider sipping, nocturnal, instinctive adventures. He has to put his wild days behind him and do what fathers do best: be responsible. He is too rebellious. He is too wild. He is going to try "just one more raid" on the three nastiest, meanest farmers that are Walter Boggis (Robin Hurlstone), Nathan Bunce (Hugo Guinness), and Franklin Bean (Sir Michael Gambon). It is a tale of crossing the line of family responsibilities and midnight adventure and the friendships and awakenings of this country life that is inhabited by Fantastic Mr. Fox and his friends.
Written and Directed by the great Wes Anderson, this wacky animated classic is great for everyone in the whole family, and not just in the dumb kids' movie tagline kind of way. It has is beautiful to look at, with an amazing cast, hilarious deadpan jokes, and a very important message.

SO WHAT EVEN HAPPENED THIS MONTH?
January has flown by and February already seems to be moving even faster. But 2021 is looking out to be a slightly improved 2020. At least in the world of film releases. Warner Brothers may have figured something out with this new HBO Max and theater release, doing well at the Box Office (in Covid terms) and with HBO subscribers. The rest of the studios are still figuring it out as we get a repeat of last year with way too many film release dates delayed (again).
But hey! Disney+ has some great things coming through the pipeline!

The Kid Who Would Be King is a film perfectly described as a "Hidden Gem." Dumped with a bad release in January of 2018, I spent too many cold mornings staring at the poor poster waiting for the bus. I instantly judged it, sadly to later realize this is one of those special releases that deserve to be treasured.
The re-telling of the classic epic of King Arthur and the Sword in the Stone, from the experience of brave 12-year-olds. Full of adventures, and heart, battles against demons and firey undead knights, and a hilarious young Merlin. It is packed with so much to enjoy, and an incredible meaningful message of hope, I am sure you will love it!
Old school magic meets the modern world in this epic adventure. Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) thinks he's just another nobody, until he stumbles upon the mythical sword in the stone, Excalibur. Now, he must unite his friends and enemies into a band of knights and, together with the legendary wizard Merlin (Sir Patrick Stewart), take on the wicked enchantress Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson). With the future at stake, Alex must become the great leader he never dreamed he could be.
Written and Directed by the great Joe Cornish, this fun kids adventure is something for all of us. Currently streaming on HBO Max and VOD.

One of the films have looked most forward to this year is Monster Hunter. Knowing nothing of the word of Paul W. S. Anderson, I was a little nervous as reviews of his work only revealed it could be hit or miss. But I think Milla Jovovich is a total boss and as a HUGE fan of the game (logging over 5000+ hours in MH3U alone) I was excited to give it a chance - in good faith. So Saturday morning my brother and I headed to our local Cinemark - and had a great time!
So should you go see it? That is up to you to decide!

Warner Brothers announced that for the entire year of 2021 they would release their films day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max at no additional cost to subscribers.

[#51] Studio Ghibli and more specifically Hayao Miyazaki are quickly becoming a personal favorite among movies and animation! Each film they produce is so fun and touching and after Spirited Away I was a life long fan! So moving onto the next in my collection of Blu Rays is "Howl's Moving Castle".
After Spirited Away blew everyone away there were a lot of English actors ready to be a part of the next amazing piece from Miyazaki. Namely Christian Bale. Also packed in this ensemble cast is Emily Mortimer, Jean Simmons, Lauren Bell (who wanted to mary Miyazaki), and Billy Crystal.
Based on the book by Diana Wynne Jones of the same title released in 1986, Howl's Moving Castle is the story of an unconfident young woman who is cursed with an old body by a spiteful witch, her only chance of breaking the spell lies with a self-indulgent yet insecure young wizard and his companions in his legged, walking castle.
Like the author said herself, it is a touching story about how "if you love someone enough all sorts of extraordinary other things happen in your surrounds as well, and you can achieve great things even if the world falls to pieces around you."

The Second-Ever Basement Binge "Monthly Update". Probably the most tired and scatterbrained I have ever been when sitting down to record. Between being busy with work, the election, and trying to find some inner peace, it feels like time has flown right by and I have no idea what has been happening. So as scatterbrained as I feel. It was good to sit down and talk about things that excite me.

SO WHAT EVEN HAPPENED THIS MONTH? AND DO WE HAVE ANYTHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO?
The bad news first. Sadly we lost the great Sean Connery at the age of 90, probably most famous for his role as the first on-screen James Bond. Some other sad news about the loved Jeff Bridges and his new battle against lymphoma. Lastly, for this sad news - Wonder Woman 1984 currently set for a December 25th release date this year might just be moved again.
So onto some more positives (maybe just to distract us). We got the Mandalorian Season 2 on Disney+ and a few new film announcements:

Unrelated to Disney+ we got a super exciting trailer and release date for the new "Monster Hunter" movie with husband & wife team Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich. A videogame series I have loved for years I can't wait to finally see this grace the big screen. Hoping the December release date can stick.
Marvel Studios finding some ways to work on upcoming films with Christian Bale and Natalie Portman arriving in Australia to film. The Doctor Strange 2 crew arriving in London. Most excitingly Oscar Issac was cast as Marc Spector for the new Moon Knight series.
TENET is finally getting an at-home release, this year December 15th.
Also sadly discussing some great trailers that got me excited for 2020 before it turned into a dumpster fire for us all.

A while back I saw my first ever Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki movie: Princess Mononoke. It absolutely blew me away! I was in a trance for days and couldn't wait to experience more. So the next time I was at Best Buy I bought Spirited Away blind. Just because of all the amazing things I had heard about his specific film. I had specifically been saving it for episode 50. It was so glad it was finally here!
I'm not really sure what my expectations were but after the credits finished, I wasn't very impressed. Besides the beautiful animation, I didn't have many positive things to say. Because I was still processing, but as I gave myself time to think, the more I realized the power in this story. Hayao Miyazaki is a master artist and I am very grateful for the impact this film has had on me over the last few days/weeks! Let me tell you all about it!

I recently heard for the first time ever, the phrase - "Lightning in a Bottle" - which I was instantly tantalized by! But if there was ever a perfect idea to express the greatness of the John Krasinksi Horror film A QUIET PLACE, it would be "Lightning in a Bottle". I am a total wimp when it comes to all things horror, but a film this good (and some motivation from my wife) can always get me to eventually press play!
A horror film made on a budget of just $13 million, no less by a first time director, most famous for his role in The Office. HOW DOES THAT FILM EXCELL THIS WELL!? Like the Abbot's themselves, the result of amazingly talented people working together. Let me tell you all about it!

Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy + Oblivion) has been a long time favorite Director of mine, so it was finally to visit his "based on a true story" film about the Granite Mountain Hotshots. On top of being a very moving and emotional film stacked with an amazing cast, it is also further proof of Kosinski's incredible talent!
Only The Brave is a 2017 film Directed by Joseph Kosinski, written by Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer. Staring an A-List cast including Josh Brolin, Miles Teller, Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Connelly, and James Badge Dale.

After being let down by Mulan (2020) I was really in the mood for a great Wuxia film. Shadow has been sitting on my shelf for far too long and it was finally time! What a great surprise this was! A beautiful and stylized masterpiece. This looks like nothing else! It may follow some typical beats of wuxia, but it adds B L A D E U M B R E L L A S what more is there to say!? What a treat this was!

A lot has changed here at The Basement Binge, and for the most part, it has been really good! It has given me a chance to go a little bit unscheduled and just watch what I want, so this episodde: Oblivion! Been a long time favorite of mine. Joseph Kosinksi teams up with Tom Cruise to bring a great visiual sci-fi. If you know me at all, all of this is right up my alley. Sometimes you don't want to try and have some analysis or complex thought, you just want to watch what you want just because.
That was the intent until I saw something negative and got a little defensive. So maybe it is all off track, but it was fun either way!!

What a great way to come back to the cinema? And back into the podcast!!
Sorry for the long intermission. But The Basement Binge is back with a spoiler-free review of Christopher Nolan's new film TENET.
TENET what an experience this was! Christopher Nolan set out to remake the experience of seeing a Bond film for the first time. This film does not disappoint. Filled with great work from John David Washington as The Protagonist, Robert Pattinson as Neil, and Elizabeth Debicki as Kat. A pounding score by Ludwig Goransson. Beautiful visuals by Hoyte van Hoytema and the whole production team!
TENET was a great time in the theater (despite missing most of the dialogue) but coming how was a bit of a mess with the two opposing responses. So after a bit of time if finally planted myself firmly in my own subjective opinion.

Bumble the transformers reboot/sequel of 2018 was a hit that came out of nowhere and has become a hit to re-visit. Matt and I sit down together (virtually) to go over our love for this movie.
But before we could do any of that I took the opportunity to pick at Matt's brain about his love and excitement for movies. It was a fun conversation to share our love for movies! - Matt, thank you again -
But then we got on to Bumblebee. A film that shocked us all, staring: Hailee Steinfeld, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., and John Cena. Directed by Travis Knight. This was a Transformers movie that came out of nowhere and charmed us all. So much love, so much to love.

Finally back at it BINGIN the MCU! Picking up where we left off with 'Phase 3' of the Infinity Saga starting with Captain America: Civil War. It's a divisive film full of conflict. Quite honestly we have been waiting to finally hear why Kelton hates Cap so much. But he came around and we all had a good laugh.

Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker.

Alright, #MCU fans we are back it with Iron Man 3 the start of Phase 2. It was very different coming back to this film after the exciting break with some great styled films. But we had fun! Tron: Legacy! Harrison has been looking forward to this with great excitement. A film that he watches once a year, it had to happen sooner or later. Perks of watching a film so much, there ends up being a lot to enjoy and talk about.
Tron: Legacy is a sci-fi action drama that has a lot to say about humanity. We talked about it all. The style, the unbeatable score by Daft Punk, the fun acting, the great actions scene, the AMAZING visual effects. This film is a lot of fun to enjoy with friends. Week 2/3 of our MCU break! Harrison showed Kelton and Kade one of his favorite movies. This movie is chock-full of references and "Binge Points", but there is a lot more to it than just that. We have our fun laughing and joking, enjoying the eye-popping masterpiece this film is. As always we end our show finding the deeper meaning of a silly movie about VR.

Taking a break from our MCU marathon we watched one of Harrison's personal favorites, Alita: Battle Angel. This was a "First Watch" for both Kade and Kelton. What a fun movie to enjoy with your friends. Huge congratulations to both James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez, making a successful live-action anime adaptation. Thank you to the incredible Alita Fanbase #AlitaArmy that was so much fun to discuss and get involved with. You guys are great.
