On this episode, we are joined by Georgia State Representative David Huddleston. Rep. Huddleston is a fifth-generation farmer from Carrollton and runs a cow-calf operation alongside his family. Before being elected to office, Huddleston participated in NCBA’s Young Cattlemen’s Conference (YCC) where he came to Washington, D.C. to advocate for the cattle industry. That experience encouraged Huddleston to step up and run for public office to be an even strong voice for cattle farmers and ranchers. Today, Rep. Huddleston is the Secretary of the Georgia House Committee on Agriculture and Consumer Affairs and serves on the Georgia House Committees on Energy, Utilities, and Telecommunications; Interstate Cooperation; Natural Resources and Environment; and the Special Committee on Resource Management. Huddleston shares his story about standing up to be an advocate for the cattle industry.

NCBA is calling for the U.S. to halt Brazilian beef imports due to Brazil’s concerning history of failing to report animal health issues in a timely manner. Bacus also explains why NCBA supports President Trump’s tariffs on Brazil but wants to see the Trump administration take further action to hold Brazil accountable.

Especially in the West, old federal survey techniques have resulted in some variation between the legal boundaries based on modern technology and historic boundary markers between private land and federal lands. These administrative discrepancies should be easy to resolve, but some have resulted in a burdensome legal process for private landowners. Senator Rounds’ bill would create a mediation process to resolve these kinds of boundary disputes and support private landowners.
On this episode, NCBA Executive Director of Government Affairs Kent Bacus joins to provide an update on the preliminary injunction that has temporarily halted filing requirements under the Corporate Transparency Act and disaster tax legislation that recently passed the Senate. The Corporate Transparency Act has raised concerns for cattle producers due to complex filing requirements and high penalties. Bacus also discusses the passage of the Federal Disaster Tax Relief Act, which was strongly supported by NCBA. Updated every five years, the Dietary Guidelines inform federal policies on everything from school lunches to chronic disease prevention. The tick is extremely mobile, reproduces quickly, and is smaller than a sesame seed, making it difficult to detect. While emissions calculation would likely be inaccurate at best, it would also place unreasonable and undue legal risk on individual producers. Current HOS rules allow for 11 hours of drive time, 14 hours of on-duty time and then require 10 consecutive hours of rest. When transporting livestock, there is a real need for further flexibility. Clint’s message is clear – hauling live cattle is different than hauling other commodities. Without flexibilities from HOS requirements, family farmers and ranchers are alienated from competitive markets. When you’re hauling live cattle, you cannot pull the truck over when you’ve hit your maximum number of hours. Additional flexibility for livestock haulers is critical for the health and safety of cattle as well as a resilient food supply chain.
