The Chinese call the Belt and Road Initiative as just an infrastructural development initiative but it is more than that. The BRI will allow Chinese to impose their policies, their trade rules (if they have any), economic style and human capital to all countries through which this passes.

Till now as any rule abiding democratic country would do, we Indians relied on diplomacy and economic boycott to ensure China comes to the meeting table.
