This week, we’re honored to spotlight the launch of Shelter Movers Regina, led by the incredible Lisa Williams. As the 11th chapter of Shelter Movers in Canada, this life-saving service is opening a path to safety for women and children fleeing abuse—right here in our community.
Shelter Movers began in Toronto in 2016 with one father, Marc Hull-Jacquin, who was on parental leave when he realized the gap in support for survivors of domestic violence. Since then, it has grown into a national organization, offering free moving and storage so that women don’t have to choose between staying in danger or fleeing with nothing.
For moms escaping violence, it’s often not as simple as just leaving. Without this kind of help, many are forced to stay—or end up on the streets. Shelter Movers partners with local agencies to create a safe, coordinated exit, helping with logistics like moving dates, pet care, and essential resources.
What makes Shelter Movers different is their focus on dignity and autonomy. They offer secure storage so you can hold onto your children's favorite toys, your family photos, or furniture—your safe items. You might not have a place for them today, but when you're ready, they’ll be there.
This episode is a tribute to the brave mothers, women, and families who make the hardest choice—and to the compassionate hands that help carry them forward.

About Lisa Williams:
With her extensive experience in community outreach and deep commitment to supporting survivors of abuse, Lisa Williams is poised to lead the chapter in its mission to offer safe and dignified moving and storage to those in need. When asked about her new role in ensuring the successful launch of Shelter Movers services in Regina, Lisa says:
"Our community needs this service and the agencies that serve folks experiencing family violence are eager for a solution that will help save lives. Leaving a violent home is the worst day of their lives for women, their children and their pets. We support their brave choice to leave. Our unique organization will take care of their belongings and the move during an already stressful transition. I am honoured to bring this option to Regina this summer for families who need a safe moving option."

"The age I get the MOST phone calls for is seven-year-olds—but do you know what age comes in second? Nine. That’s right. Nine-year-olds are often underestimated and misunderstood, and today we’re diving deep into why this age is such a turning point."
In this episode, I unpack the beautiful complexity of parenting nine-year-olds—a stage that often sneaks up on us with its big emotions, growing independence, and surprising maturity. At nine, our kids are no longer the little ones tagging behind their toddler siblings, but they’re also not quite tweens.
We'll explore:
You’ll walk away with practical tools, compassionate insight, and a reminder that this age can be one of the most rewarding stages—if we learn to meet them where they are.
If you’ve ever thought, “I don’t know what happened to my sweet little kid!”—this one’s for you.
✨ Let’s make nine a year of growth, joy, and deeper connection. Press play.

Welcome back to Families Matter Most Podcast! This week, we're diving into a topic that's both common and challenging for many parents: why do our kids act up and let loose in unhealthy ways right after school? We'll explore the reasons behind this behavior and offer actionable tips to help you manage it without feeling overwhelmed.
Big Breath, Moms! Before we dive into our tips for the kids, here's a quick strategy for you, the parent: Set an alarm for 3 p.m. every day. Use this time for a 5-minute coffee break or a moment to yourself. This brief pause will help you stay calm and collected, ensuring you're at your best to support your kids through their after-school transition.
4 Tips to Help Your Kids Adjust After School:
Crunchy Snack Time: Encourage your child to have a crunchy snack when they get home. Crunchy foods can help them decompress and release some of the day's tension. Plus, it’s a great way to keep their energy levels steady.
Quiet Time: Give your child 10 to 15 minutes of quiet time right after school. This short break allows them to unwind from the hustle and bustle of the school day and helps them transition more smoothly into the home environment.
Move Their Body: Physical activity is crucial. Whether it's a quick run around the yard, a dance session, or a short bike ride, moving their body helps release pent-up energy and improves their mood.
Healthy Relationships: Ensure that the time immediately after school is reserved for healthy interactions. Avoid diving straight into difficult conversations or tasks. Instead, focus on positive and supportive engagement to foster a better mood and smoother transition.
Managing after-school behavior doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With these simple strategies—taking a calm moment for yourself, encouraging a crunchy snack, allowing quiet time, incorporating physical activity, and nurturing positive interactions—you can help your child adjust more easily and create a more harmonious end to the day.
Thanks for tuning in to this week’s episode of Families Matter Most! If you found these tips helpful, don’t forget to subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode with other parents who might benefit. Until next time, take care and keep nurturing those little ones with love and patience!

Sofia's House: Sofia's House is more than a shelter for women fleeing violence. They offer:
1st Stage - Emergency Care: Immediate support for women with no safe place to go. 2nd Stage - Self-Referral: Safe housing for women who are currently in a safe place but need somewhere stable to reside. 3rd Stage- Independence: Assistance for women who are regaining their independence but still require a safe environment.
Key Statistics: - Women are 2 1/2 to 3 times more likely to be victims of intimate partner violence than men. - Intimate partner abuse is the number one form of abuse in Saskatchewan.

Thought to Ponder: Consider the roots of abusive behavior. What trauma did the abuser experience that led them to seek control through violence?

Greg shares some personal stories and 'aha' moments of how the spotlight changed him, while he thought this was "normal." We all love to have that friend that tells us life is so hard, but do you have that person that will also challenge you? What if the problem really is you? It's easy to get inside our own heads and hyper-focus. Remember that song, “Hi, it’s me. I’m the problem, it’s me.” Ya, that song is a stab in the gut to admit, but often the truth.
We've all been there. We have all thought, "everybody has abandoned me, I’m the victim, why is everyone so awful to me?" BUT could this be a tell tale sign that it isn't them?
Before we spend long days around lots of people we may not "like" let's challenge ourselves with some truths. So we are mentally prepared for awkward moments.

Jenna has lost weight many times.
When she was younger she liked to workout and went to exercise classes. If she wanted to lose weight she could just give up carbs and sugar and the pounds would melt away. She lost 40 pounds doing the Keto Diet a few years ago, and she loved it, but she couldn’t maintain it and over time the weight crept back. Jenna wanted to lose the weight, but more than that, she wanted to have more energy and feel comfortable in her own skin. She was sick of feeling self-conscious and constantly pulling her shirt away from her body. Jenna did the work and has lost the weight, kept it off, and transformed the way she sees herself.

We dig into that, and I share some of my past and what I learned about my thoughts and feelings.

My husband Sean joins me in this podcast to talk about our journey to get to a great marriage where we can honestly say we’re best friends. .
How did Sean and I get from tolerating each other- to here?
If you’re ready to do the work to have a great marriage, here’s where to start.
The four predictors of divorce: criticism, defensiveness, stonewalling and contempt. Let's review what they are and how they hurt us, and then determine how to change. I know we all want a happy marriage, so let's figure this out! Even if you're doing well, this podcast will help you know what to look for and what you can do to make your marriage even better! Based on research by Dr John Gottman.
There are common pitfalls in marriage that trip us up.
Some of them are complicated, but some of them are just plain dumb.
The words we use to make our point can destroy relationships.
Too often, one person will make a statement that derails the whole point of the conversation and next thing we know there’s an argument about whether some particular wrongdoing happened on Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning. We’ve missed the point, and now we’re arguing about semantics. How about you never use these statements again ever? Well, try.
The great news is, with just a few tweaks to your verbiage you can make a huge difference in your marriage. Start noticing the words you speak today!
What is a lie? Why do kids do it? And how can we get them to stop?!! I get these questions a lot!
Usually parents are at their wits end- they’ve tried everything they know and nothing has worked. Seriously, lying is a difficult behavior to deal with (as you’ll hear in this podcast!)
Let’s talk about the difference between lying and storytelling, when to use consequences, and strategies to help your kids choose honesty. You haven’t ruined your kids! There’s lots of ways to help them learn to tell the truth. Keep trying to reach their heart!

I’d always wanted to be healthy, but I could never be successful long term. I’d have a few good days but I could never maintain it. I’d keep my morning routine for a few days and then fall apart. I’d lose weight but then gain it all back. It wasn’t until I turned 40 that it worked. If I reflect on it, the difference was that I COMMITTED to the goal.
