In this episode of the podcast, I speak with Paige Rien, a former HGTV home improvement star and current designer that helps people cultivate and love their homes! Her latest book is Revived & Renovated: Conversations on the Intersection of Home, Faith & Everything in Between. I had no idea how much Paige and I had in common when we started this conversation, but when you say "eating disorder" and "sobriety," I'm immediately gonna be your best friend. In this conversation, I talk to Paige about what it was like ascending to semi-fame on TV, her struggle with addictions, infertility and converting to Catholicism. I was fascinated by her adult conversion, her many, hard-won years of sobriety from alcohol and how she's built a better life for herself and her family through it all. Recent episodes:

In this episode, I speak with Krystal Parker, the President of the Florida Christian Chamber. She is passionate about integrating Christian faith into the workplace helping people make wise decisions about their careers and how they spend their money. Reminder: Most of spend 8-9 hours a day working. How could we even consider that our faith wouldn't factor in? God is MOVING in the professional workplace in big ways right now. I was fascinated by this conversation, where we discussed how God uses the career place to change hearts, minds and glorify Himself. Bonus fun: Krystal attended Harvard Business School and scaled the corporate ladder of a Fortune 200 publicly traded oil and gas company, where she became the youngest executive among a handful of women officers. She is also a single mom who is an inspiration to so many women. I have no doubt you'll love this conversation and be moved and inspired to incorporate your faith more deeply into your work. When I first heard about Katy Faust's organization, Them Before Us, I was intrigued. Childrens' rights? Aren't those built in? You would think so, but it's not truly the case in modern society. Them Before Us is a global movement defending children’s right to their mother and father. What does this mean though? It means that in all things -- from divorce to abortion to surrogacy to remarriage and more -- children deserve to be put first. As Katy deftly educates in her book, children who grow up in a family with married, biological parents fare the very best in all life circumstances. There are always outliers, but statistical majorities show this is true. In this episode we talk about:
How no-fault divorce led to horrible outcomes for children
How surrogacy & egg/sperm donation leave children with a primal trauma wound from birth
How children are harmed when there is either no father or no mother in the home
How the most dangerous person for a child is an unrelated family member living in the home (ie. mom's boyfriend)
What it would mean to truly put children FIRST instead of leading with adult sympathy and desires above all.
This is an important and fascinating conversation. I loved talking with Katy and share her heart for childrens' rights. Recent episodes:

In this episode, I'm speaking with my friend Elizabeth Rhyno. She is a worship pastor, mom of three (fresh adults!), and faith life coach for Christian women. Elizabeth is truly one of the kindest souls I've ever met and she has been an incredible friend to me over the past couple of years. Here, we speak about what it means to parent in uncertainty, how to find joy even things are going wrong and live in the moment God has put you in. Many unexpected things have happened to Elizabeth, as she and her husband, Scott, have been called to ministry in a variety of locations. It was fun to ask her a few questions about her view of Americans, as a Canadian! Elizabeth's husband pastors my home church and I've been so privileged to walk in their guidance. I love hearing about Elizabeth's dream of starting a respite and retreat center for women! Doesn't that sound incredible? Enjoy this conversation! Recent episodes:

Melissa Zaldivar is the author of the new & awesomely titled "What Cannot Be Lost: How Jesus Holds Us Together When Life is Falling Apart." I spoke with Melissa about her life in New England, the story of losing her best friend to cancer and what she learned through the grief and loss of that experience. Melissa is an incredible and insightful writer whose words are full of wisdom. At a time when loss has become familiar to all of us in some way, shape or form, her book and this interview speak to the emotions of so many. Whether is loss of a person, a dream or something else, you'll be sure to resonate with Melissa's experience. She also did the coolest thing, by weaving in the story of Little Women (which is set in the town she lives in!) and the loss of Beth in that story (which is true!), into her book. My friend Leah grew up in what she calls a "cult," a super-fundamentalist church setting where women were routinely put down, disrespected and where she never heard that God loved her. To her, this is just what Christianity was. As she says, "When you're in a cult, they don't tell you you're in a cult." It wasn't until years later, in young adulthood, that Leah attended a "normal" Christian church and began to recognize what had happened to her growing up. Thankfully, she encountered a healthy church community walked alongside her, even helping pay for years of therapy to overcome her past. It's been a long journey, but Leah has been able to emerge from this painful church history and thrive inside a healthy church body for several years now. Rather than running away from God, she got curious and began exploring what it looked like to be a. Christian in a place that was not abusive and that did value her as a woman. I share Leah's story in my upcoming book, "Reason to Return: Why Women Need the Church and the Church Needs Women." This is the first peek inside a few podcast episodes that will be dedicated to telling powerful stories of the church in the lives of women. Recent episodes:

Betsy Painter is a creative writer and conservation biologist, who is passionate about environmental care and its human dimensions. I spoke with Betsy about her new book, A Christian's Guide to Planet Earth: Why it Matters and How to Care For it. More and more Christians have been working and supportive of policies and actions to help protect the Earth in recent years. Climate change has become a big issue for many young Christians and its cool to see those who are making a difference. I thought it was really neat that Betsy studied Religion and Ecology -- what a neat combo. And to bring in a Biblical narrative to all of this is so important. When I think about Earth, my mind roams back to Eden and all the majestic creativity God put into forming this planet, it's many kinds of plants, animals, mountains, waters and mysteries. Is surrogacy bad news? Today, I’m talking with Jennifer Lahl, founder and president of The Center for Bioethics and Culture. She has written, commented and produced multiple films on the concerns and ethics of things like egg donors, surrogate pregnancy, sperm donation and the problems with the Big Fertility industry. Most people haven’t thought much abut these issues, but they are becoming more and more prevalent and are worth consideration, especially if you find yourself dealing with fertility issues. In this episode, we talk about:
How Big Fertility targets and exploits poor and vulnerable women
The trauma that comes with not knowing one’s biological parents
Lack of regulation in the fertility industry
The money & corruption inside the fertility industry
Coming trends like human cloning and more in-depth genetic prenatal testing
After going through IVF myself, I became wary of the fertility industry and now have even more concerns. People don’t want to think about what Jennifer brings to the table, but this stuff is cultivating the future and we have a generation of children without parents, children being brought into the world on purpose without a mom and a dad and much more. It’s worth paying attention to! Some of Jennifer’s films include:
Eggsploitation
Anonymous Father’s Day
Breeders: A Subclass of Women?

Christian sex advice has a bad rap. Sheila Gregoire is changing that. She's been making waves in the Christian world for several years now. Her latest book, The Great Sex Rescue, dives deep into the patriarchal culture of Christian sex "advice" and ideology over the years. On social media, and in her book, she calls out specific teachings and ideas that have been harmful to women and to Christian marriages specifically for decades. What I find fascinating is that both theologically conservative and theologically progressive Christians love her! As a conservative myself (and fan of Sheila's work), I wanted to dig deeper into what it is that appeals to Christians from across the spectrum. I spoke with Sheila and her daughter and co-author Rebecca Gregoire Lindenbach for an article I was writing, but I loved the audio so much I asked if I could share it! This episode may sound a little different than a typical one, but totally worth a listen -- as Sheila and Rebecca share their unfiltered opinions about what's gone wrong and how they are trying to fix it! Her own description is best here: "For those of us who have been called and crushed, loved and sometimes left, welcomed and wounded by the Church yet our anointing keeps us holding on." In honest, authentic fashion, Natalie talks about her childhood as a pastor's kid, becoming a pastor and what makes her stay even after hardship and heartache. Her message is for those who have stayed and wandered, those who understand that church is not just a building, but a people and the home and heart of Jesus. Anne Wilson is beautiful inside and out. The singer and songwriter from Kentucky has seen some of her songs rise to popularity quickly and her ability to create meaningful melody and lyrics are one-of-a-kind. I found her by accident, searching for songs about the Church. That's when I stumbled upon her song, "Sunday Sermons." I liked it so much, I decided to listen to her whole album on Pandora. Then, I was hooked! I rarely listen to a full album or get attached to one artist, but there was something about Anne that got me good. I was so excited when she agreed to come on the podcast and our conversation doesn't disappoint. Even as a 20-year-old, our conversation encouraged me as a Momma! When she talks about how her parents raised her, and her own faith journey before and after the death of her big brother, Jacob, I was moved and grateful. In this episode, we talk about:
Growing up in the church, but not always loving it
Anne's unexpected journey to singing (which began when she first sang publicly at her brother's funeral)
The art of songwriting and how her creativity works
Her heart for the Lord and why she'll always use music to reach them

Kelly Speck never dreamed her newborn son would be anything but perfect, but just after birth he was taken to the NICU and thus began "a nightmare journey.” She was told her son wouldn't live long, but he overcame the odds. Joni Earekson Tada is a name I've known for most of my life. I remember her book sitting on a bookshelf in my childhood church, her story of becoming a quadrapilegic at 17 years old after a diving accident. And yet, in the midst of this personal tragedy, she reached out to God and He has worked through her life in the most incredible ways. When I saw her new children's book, The Awesome Super Fantastic Forever Party Storybook, I knew I had to ask if I could interview her. Dr. Christina Francis is the Chairman of the Board of the American Association of Pro-Life OB-GYNs. I spoke with her for a story, but her answers were so incredible that I just had to deliver this interview as a podcast episode as well. In this episode, Dr. Francis answers questions about her reaction to Roe v. Wade possibly being overturned, and speaks to some of the myths that have been circulating since the news came out. We speak about: '
Could ectopic pregnancies and miscarriage somehow be criminalized? How is medical treatment different than abortion?
The dangers of the abortion pill and self-managed abortions at home (complications are 4x higher and she speaks to this.)
The abortion pill reversal program (they've seen over 3,000 babies delivered to women who changed their minds after taking their first abortion pill)
The truth behind 2nd & 3rd trimester abortions
How often do fetal anomalies make it "necessary" to have an abortion?
How does abortion harm women in ways beyond the actual procedure?
This is not easy subject matter, but I hope it's clear from this conversation that those of us who are pro-life are genuine and compassionate about our care for both women and children. Dr. Francis does an incredible job clarifying some information that I think gets clouded in media circles. I hope you'll consider what she has to say! Related episodes:

I first heard of Tsh years ago when she was working on her book about traveling around the world with her young family. I was fascinated and intrigued by her story and was so excited to have the opportunity to chat with Tsh about her new book, "Bitter and Sweet: A Journey Into Easter." Lent starts very soon (depending on when you listen to this!) so grab this book now. Also, even if you are listening off-season, grab it for the next Lent -- happens every year ;) She also has a great book on Advent if you are looking for other resources. Which is to say, when we see things how they really are, thanks to the good wisdom and creativity of our Maker." This episode is super short because I had a ton audio mishaps and then lost a big part of the interview. Rachel Marie Kang is a beautiful writer and the creator of Indelible Ink Writers—an online community of diverse creatives willing and wanting to bring forth bare words and brave art. She's got a book on creativity coming out this year and I gotta say, this conversation really nourished my soul. I didn't know Rachel before, but I felt we were kindred spirits as creatives and I think fellow Enneagram 4s and creatives will really enjoy this dive into writing, mothering and where the seeds of our inspiration come from. Sheila Gregoire talks about sex and it's earned her some exclusion in the Christian world, but for all the wrong reasons. She's been writing and speaking on sex within Christian marriage for years, but her latest book, "The Great Sex Rescue" taps new ground -- and it's fascinating. She's done intensive, comprehensive surveys of men and women -- and her discoveries fuel what she covers in this book. Namely, Christians (and culture generally) have often put women in the terrible position of "obligation sex" or doing things they aren't comfortable with because they think they "owe" it to their husbands. That's just one of the things we cover, but an important one. That is NOT a healthy view of sex and no woman should feel this way.
More episodes here Sheila is bold and unafraid to tackle popular Christian marriage books and authors. In fact, she often excerpts some of the worst lines and exposes just how toxic, abusive and insane some of them are. She's authentic, fun and standing up for healthy relationships in a way that's refreshing and essential If you can't tell, I absolutely loved speaking with her and highly recommend her work! If you are struggling with sex in your marriage, I also want to mention the work of Janna Denton-Howes, a woman I have worked with and found to be an incredible, empowering resource. Recent episodes:

Katie Scott is mom to three littles and God gave her a vision to show tired mommas how to "chase vibrance" in their everyday lives. She helps women find joy and purpose, even in the moments that feel mundane. Moms of little kids are tired and short on time -- and Katie knows that! She helps them live into their unique, God-given purpose even when things feel chaotic. Practical help, encouragement, community and empowerment are values you offers and she is so relatable! Elisha and Angela are friends who grew up together in a very conservative fundamentalist church environment. Hell and damnation were the regular vibe and spiritual abuse ran rampant. The guilt and misguided ways in which their pastors and spiritual leaders taught them made Christianity confusing -- and not at all the true way of Jesus. As they got older, both of then eventually found their way to new avenues of the Christian faith. Over time, they each saw how screwed up their fundamentalist backgrounds really were. Today, they've been able to make peace with God but the religious trauma from the past is still there, beneath the surface. In this conversation, I speak with them both about what they went through, how they reconciled it and where they are today with their faith. As we begin to talk more openly about spiritual abuse and deep church hurt in society, I think some will resonate with their experience. Recent Episodes:

Jessica Hottle is a Christian writer, podcast host, speaker, and coach for women. Her new book, "Face Off With Your Feelings: Break Up with the Lies of Your Past and Embrace the Truth For Your Future" is available for pre-order now on her website. According to her bio, she "hates rules, restrictions, and religious duties" and lives her life by putting God first, and living authentically, with integrity, and in freedom through Christ. After living through a past where she idolized her body and letting men or work be the source of her value, she made a dramatic change. Jessica was able to find freedom from the pain of her past by realizing that her worth was only determined by the love of Jesus going to the cross for her. Her perspective as a coach and author is one that encourages women to be wholistically health in spirit, soul AND body. She loves to help women find freedom from their pasts and healing in their bodies through faith-based fitness coaching, books, and speaking events to create long-term, sustainable results. I loved chatting with Jessica about her transformation and also about how she's built a very cool brand and self-published multiple books with major success. Don't miss this inspiring conversation. Amanda Waldron has a job title that's very new to the scene: Deconstruction Coach. But not just any Deconstruction Coach. She's the kind that helps folks rebuild their faith when they are seasons of doubt and distress. A trained social worker, Amanda started to hear more issues related to faith in her professional practice. It gave her the idea to help more folks struggling online. As many struggle with doubt, church hurt or overcoming past faith struggles, they are in need of guidance. Unfortunately, too many people offering that are leading people away from Christ rather than back to Him. Amanda helps people recover the authentic parts of their faith and discover a deeper way to believe. She exposes the parts of Christianity that were never meant to represent God and works with people to overcome myths or misinformation they may be carrying with them unnecessarily. One of her mantras if "curiosity" over "certainty." While I'm sure Amanda and I don't agree on every tactic, this was a fascinating conversation and I truly appreciate the work she is doing to capture those who need the freedom to explore and the space to come back when they are ready. When I read an article titled "Acidhead: God Took Me Higher" by Ashley Lande, I was totally enthralled. I hardly ever take the time to read an essay all the way through -- especially a long one. But Ashley's beautiful writing and incredible story drew me in. I immediately found her on social media and invited her on for this episode of the podcast. I love her story so much. She came from a life of drugs and partying -- and Jesus radically transformed both she and her husband. In this interview, Ashley gives me all the details how she got into using drugs and psychedelics, and how one day, God came crashing in. It's true -- the high of an authentic relationship with Jesus beats the high of any drug. Ashley knows. It's been years since she's done drugs, but her story is powerful. Read the article. Listen to the podcast. Follow this girl -- she is incredible. Recent episodes:

Jackie Aviles is one of my favorite new online friends. I began following her last year, but it took months to realize she had overcome an insane battle against cancer as the mother of two young children. She recently hit 5 years in remission and the way she tells this story had me in tears. Jackie is a "Hope Coach" with Go and Tell Gals, a writer working on her first book, and a pastor's wife at Christ Fellowship Church in Miami. Listening to this conversation, you'll be struck by Jackie's unshakable faith during one of the scariest times of her life, when she had to tell her little boys that she might soon be going to heaven. She had to grapple with that reality and it was certainly something that could have happened. By God's grace, she is alive and healthy today -- using her personal story as a way to bring hope and God's Truth to women around the nation. I was so honored to speak with Jackie -- and so incredibly encouraged by what she shared. You will feel empowered and inspired after hearing this episode. Recent episodes:

Amy Gannett does a lot of things. Being a church planter with her husband is no small task, but in addition to that -- she's an entrepreneur, Bible teacher, online leader and Mom to 1-year-old Emerson. I first discovered Amy through her company, Tiny Theologians, which makes theology cards for young children. You've heard me mention it before on the podcast because I love teaching my kids this stuff early. Amy has quickly become one of my favorite people to follow, precisely because she is so focused on injecting the deep things of God into everyday life. I recently signed up for her Bible Study membership, which includes all kinds of Bible studies with fellow, amazing female Bible teachers. I love Amy's commitment to learning and teaching the Word well, through her weekly "Theology Thursdays" videos on Instagram, monthly newsletter and -- very exciting -- her NEW BOOK, which releases very soon! "Fix Your Eyes: How Our Study of God Shapes Our Worship Of Him" (I pre-ordered!). Enjoy her wisdom in this episode and be inspired to dig into God's Word as you never have. Kristen Young is a lot of fun, but she's also got a lot to say about things that matter. By her own description, she's a "homemaker and a truth speaker" who is wants to encourage Christ followers to live out their faith boldly. She's a mom of 3 (and pregnant with #4) and has made a name for herself on Instagram in the past year. When Reels became popular, Kristen realized she had knack for capturing hard truths in short, simple statements inside of eye-catching reels. She expounds on the short messages in the caption and sometimes does longer videos and posts for more explanation. Kristen has spoken out about everything from mandated vaccines to masks to progressive Christianity. In this chat, she talks about how she was resistant to gettin involved in such sticky subjects, but felt God's call to speak out. After taking some time off of IG in late 2020, she heeded that calling and started making reels and videos as the ideas came to her. I've enjoyed her content and couldn't wait to hear what was behind her passion! Recent episodes:

In this episode of the podcast, I speak with Phylicia Masonheimer, an author and teacher I have come to love and respect so much in the past year. Phylicia makes learning the Bible and understanding hard issues according to a Biblical worldview accessible to everyone. She's a mom of three young kids who has written several books, including "Stop Calling Me Beautiful" and offers multiple online courses in theology basics and leadership. She hosts the popular "Verity" podcast and runs her business, "Every Woman a Theologian" with her husband and a small team of staff. I'm always fascinated at how much Phylicia does, but it's clear this is her calling and she's doing such a service for the everyday woman who wants to know God on a deeper level, but doesn't have time or calling for seminary. In this conversation, we talk a bit about how Phylicia stays balanced, taking regular month-long social media breaks and trusting in God to sustain her ministry as she cares for her family and her whole body health. There are so many gems of wisdom in this episode, including the conversation we have about the Church, why it matters and what Phylicia has to say to those who have been hurt or are thinking they don't need to church to have a thriving relationship with God. Ten years ago, Leah Wacek's pastor made a bold statement: You can't out-give God. She and her family put those audacious words to the test. They soon discovered the truth in the statement. "Each time we gave what seemed sacrificial," writes Leah, "We saw the gift somehow make its way back to us." It started with financial giving, but for their family, it's become a mission to build generosity into every part of their lives. From dedicating family days with her kids to service projects to saving money for fun, extravagant giving (like purchasing something someone in their community really needs), Leah has made generosity the focus of her faith and life. Her blog is called "A Generous Life" and she regularly gives away books, sticks $20 bills inside boxes of formula at the grocery store and makes a point to go above and beyond for those around her. It's not about how much you have, but what you do with what you've been blessed with. I also love that part of her giving method is time-related. They don't just give away money, but also DAYS -- because time and presence matter deeply as well. Her website is packed with helpful blog posts that can help you and your family start thinking generously on a daily basis. Highly recommend a listen and following her on Instagram! Recent episodes:

Rachel Pieh Jones has lived overseas for two decades -- and in Djbouti no less. She's American, but these days, more familiar with life in a very different place. In her new book, "Pillars: How Muslim Friends Led Me Closer to Jesus," she talks about all she has learned. It was neat to speak with Rachel on IG Live from around the world and to hear what her experiences have meant to her as a Christian. She is not a missionary, but has still had the opportunity to live out her faith and connect meaningfully with the many Muslim friends around her. So often, we see the meaningful religious rituals demonstrated in religions like Islam, yet don't have or activate similar kinds of rituals in our own lives. How could our faith grow were we to be as dedicated to Jesus as some are to their own faith? Rachel -- who is an incredible writer -- has learned a lot and we can all benefit from her wisdom. Claire Culwell is an abortion survivor. She was adopted as a baby and grew up with an incredible, loving family. As an adult, she was inspired to find her birth mother. Soon after that meeting, her birth mother revealed something shocking: she had nearly been aborted. Pregnant at 13, Claire's mother was unknowingly carrying twins. When she had an abortion, the procedure took the life of only one baby. In this episode, you'll hear for the child that survived. In her new book, "Survivor: An Abortion Survivor's Surprising Story of Choosing Forgiveness and Finding Redemption," Claire tells her beautiful story. MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) has been around for nearly 50 years and it has been such an important ministry to moms of little ones over the years. MOPS partners with local churches to bring moms together for fellowship, food and ministry -- usually while they get a few hours of childcare thrown in! Michelle Cowan started worked with MOPS just as COVID begin and has been part of the incredible adaptation the past year required. Despite the struggle of meeting in person, the program really took off online -- creating "Mama Meetup Groups" by topic and geography, as well as launching a few other new initiatives. In this conversation, Michelle shares her passion for getting the Gospel to moms. We talk about the unique ministry of reaching women who may be unchurched or dechurched in a way that isn't pushy or unhelpful. It's sometimes tough to reach demographics that aren't specifically looking for faith resources, but MOPS helps care for larger needs and in turn, can present Jesus to women in that way. Jennifer Maggio first became a single mom at the age of 17 years old. She had another child two years later and struggled as a young mom seeking guidance and support. She had been through trauma as a child and wasn't sure where to find what she needed. Though she left the Church for some time, her faith eventually led her back to a community of believers. Ultimately, she realized there was something missing: a ministry or support group for single moms. The vast majority fo single parent households in the United States are led by Moms and 67% or more of those families do not attend church. There are both logistical and personal reasons for this high number, but Jennifer knew there was so much women could gain from faithfully meeting with women who could understand their lives. Life of a Single Mom ministries began with a small group of women at her church and quickly grew to a huge group of women -- and Jennifer realized she was on to something. Now, this ministry has served over 400,000 women in the past 10 years! This ministry is so very important today, at a time when there are more single moms than ever before. The Church should be the one stepping up to ensure they know they are cared for, loved and supported. Follow Jennifer and LSM:

Alexandra Hoover is on fire right now. As an author, speaker, writer, ministry leader and Mom, she feels called by God to lead women with words and truth. Her regular writing on social media inspires women daily and cuts through the self-help lies to remind us we are only who we are through Jesus. She just announced a book deal for 2022 and recently released a devotional, as well as a regular IGLive show "Hard and Holy," as well as being a regular guest on other people's shows. I loved speaking with her about her passion for women and for the local church. We talk about why the imperfect church matters so much and how church hurt plays a part in keeping people away. Christie Dondero Bettwy is the Executive Director of Rock Recovery, a Christian organization that helps men and women find freedom from eating disorders for a lifetime. I've been a supporter of Rock Recovery for many years, because I know how important it is to find freedom from an eating disorder. I lived with one for over 10 years and never want anyone to feel like they can't overcome. In this conversation, Christie and I talk about our respective journies, how to get help, how to think about parenting in regards to EDs and the financial burden of treatment (it's a lot!), which is why organizations like Rock are such and important resource -- they have a sliding scale payment system and no one will be turned away. Laura Wifler is an author, podcaster and co-founder and Executive Director of Risen Motherhood. I chatted with her for this edition of the "Worth Your Time" podcast focused on Mommas. There's a lot of ground do cover in that topic, but we attempted to get to some of it! How can we apply to the Gospel to every aspect of our lives -- even the Bible doesn't have a verse specifically about potty training, temper tantrums or middle school woes? How can we approach our marriages with the right attitude and keep the larger pespective of God's redemption and forgiveness over our lives in the end? Laura's Godly wisdom was such a blessing to me today! I'm so inspired by she and her sister-in-law, Emily Jensen, and how they've built such a beautiful ministry. It's no wonder it's grown so quickly and become such a beloved resource for women acrosss the world. This convo seriously inspired to me to grab a couple of copies of their book: https://www.risenmotherhood.com/book Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Casper Ter Kuile's new book, "The Power of Ritual: Turning Everyday Activities Into Soulful Practices," is so timely. He's been researching community, ritual and connection for years -- and his work has become so popular that it really demanded book form! In today's interview, we talk about how things like SoulCycle and CrossFit became sort of "religious" in their followings. As people have left traditional religion, they have sought other ways of connecting. Unfortunately, many people haven't found those communities, but Casper hops to reinvigorate the search for community and finding sacredness in everyday life. While I still believe the Church is the very best form of community, it certainly isn't the only place to find relationship and support structure. In a nation severely disconnected -- and suffering extreme mental health woes and loss of faith because of it -- the ideas Casper promotes are more important than ever. Richella Parham is a mom of three, writer and author of the book, "Mythical Me: Finding Freedom From Constant Comparison." Throughout her life, Richella has struggle with comparison -- from appearance to achievements to personality traits. As an adult, she finally found a breakthrough and writes about the many cultural and spiritual myths so many women believe to their detriment. In today's interview, I chat with Richella about growing up with a rare skin condition that she felt set her apart, and how that contributed to her comparison mindset. We also talk about how she's dealt with the health conditions her children have endured and she was able to get through extremely tough moments as a Mom. Richella has a beautiful heart and a refreshing perspective that we can all learn from. I truly enjoyed this conversation and know you will take so much from it! Learn more about your ad choices. Mary DeMuth has written over 40 books and her recent "We Too: How the Church Can Respond Redemptively to the Sexual Abuse Crisis" -- took a lot out of her. Mary is still healing from wounds of sexual abuse in her past, as she many likely will be for a lifetime. As the #MeToo movement traveled across the country several years ago, the #ChurchToo movement followed close behind. There is abuse in the Church, beyond what was previously known, and there are those who would protect rather than preserve justice. Mary is a leading voice in helping churches choose differently and act justly. Churches have begun to change and address these things more recently, but it's simply not enough. There's a lot going on in the world but sexual assault and abuse is rampant and the time is always right for conversation. Mary's personal story is heartbreaking, but her personal redemption and heart for other victims is empowering. This work matters and I was privileged to have the opportunity to speak with her. My episode today is with Sharon Hodde Miller, author, speaker, church planter, mom -- and a very wise soul in my opinion. In Sharon's latest book, "Nice," she covers the concept of Christian "niceness" and how we've confused being "nice" with being a Christ follower. This episode was recorded just before COVID and definitely before the recent racial justice protests in our country, but I found so much of it extremely relevant to the current conversation. We have a responsibility as Christians to speak out for justice. We discuss how Jesus approach situations like the ones we are seeing today. It always helps to consider the age old question: What would Jesus do? Sharon enlightens me on why she values the Church s much -- and why it's so important for Christians to cherish it to -- even when they've been hurt or disappointed by it. I have long appreciated Sharon's thoughtful, nuanced commentary on social media and encourage you to give her a follow as well, Connect with Sharon:

K.J. Ramsey is a writer, therapist and person who suffers from chronic pain. In her new book, "This Too Shall Last," K.J. writes about living with faith in the midst of pain that may not end. She told me one of the worst things those suffering hear from well-meaning loved ones is, "This too shall pass." Thus, the name of her book. And, well, sometimes things don't. In today's interview, I speak with her about living with her condition for over a decade, how she manages and what she does to remember God's goodness in the midst of it. K.J. writes and speaks about the way community and pain are linked -- and how our brains process struggles of all kinds. Mark Sayers is a renowned author, pastor and speaker -- and I was so excited to get an interview with him for a bonus episode this week. His books, specifically "Disappearing Church" and "Reappearing Church," completely blew my mind with their incredible insight and analysis on the Western Christian church, post-Christian culture and what the history of the Church reveals about how God is moving RIGHT NOW. Mark's work came blasting into crazy relevancy with COVID-19 because he writes so beautifully about how God works in tragedy, crisis, transition and change -- all things we are experiencing worldwide right now. This episode is relevant to COVID, but also important for anyone who cares about faith, the future of the Church and wants some good news about what God's doing in the West, despite what the headlines or doomsday statistics may say. His books inspired my recent Wall Street Journal op/ed and his work has influenced the aim I'm taking in my next book. Jennifer Allwood is one of the most practical, inspirational women I've ever spoken to. She built her business from the ground up, with littles at home, and learned through time and practices how to grow a following and do it well. Today, she teaches thousands of women how to get their businesses off the ground, and keeps God front and center. There are a lot of business coaches these days, but Jennifer's focus on faith sets her apart from the masses. She's teaching women how to make money online by working smarter, not harder, and tapping into their God-given gifts. With a focus on intention, prayer, wisdom and goal setting, Jennifer is a master of her craft. Her new book, "Fear Is Not the Boss of You" is perfect for any woman with a dream and a laptop. Jennifer was so easy to talk to and you better believe I was seeking out some personal tips to take with me for the road -- and boy, she delivered! Alyson Premo found herself a single mom at rock bottom. She knew she had to stop drinking. And then, she knew she had to help other moms stop too. Today I speak with Alyson, the founder of Sober Mom Tribe, about her journey into and out of alcoholism. Today, Alyson is free from the chains of alcohol and works with hundreds of women across the country to become sober and re-create their lives without alcohol. Alyson created Sober Mom Tribe after realizing there weren't a ton of resources out there specifically for moms in recovery. Many sobriety programs and books are written by the childless or single, but moms face very unique challenges and they need a specific kind of support. I enjoyed speaking with Alyson and learning some of her tips for remaining calm and staying sober in the face of struggles, including right now during the Coronavirus pandemic. I recently gave up drinking and have found so many fabulous women and moms like Alyson who are empowering people to choose something better for their lives. You'll be amazed by her story. I spoke with with MaryKatharine Ham about parenting in crisis -- something she knows all too well. When Mary Katharine was 7 months pregnant and raising a 2-year-old, her husband, Jake, was tragically killed in a bicycling accident. In an instant, she was forced to become the parent she never thought she'd have to be. She resolved to be resilient and face life's challenges with goals in mind, hope at front of mind. She realized that many people are facing a similar, yet less tragic, dilemma right now. They don't believe they are the parent who can do this -- but they can. Her thoughts evolved into an IG video, then to a wonderful piece in The Atlantic called: "It's Okay to Be a Different Kind of Parent During a Pandemic:" https://www.theatlantic.com/…/what-losing-my-husban…/609607/ Take a listen to the invaluable lessons Mary Katharine shares with me here. Lauren Green McAfee has an infectious laugh and is so easy to talk to. You'd never guess the turmoil she's been through in the past year. The grand-daughter of David Green, the founder of Hobby Lobby, she was born into an incredible family. But when she and her husband decided to start a family, things didn't go as planned. They began with the process of adoption, having no idea it would take 7 years to meet their daughter. After so many years of dealing with the adoption process, they finally brought their daughter, Zion, home. Shockingly, within weeks, they discovered Zion had a rare, childhood cancer that would require immediate attention. Thankfully, Zion is now in remission, but the experience was shocking, scary and a whirlwind for Lauren, who has kept her spirits high and her faith in God's plan in tact. Today we talk about that whole journey, as well as the book Lauren wrote with her husband (they are both getting Ph.D's right now!) about the Bible and why people might need to give it another chance! Rachel Pieh Jones has a very cool life -- and it's almost hard to believe. The mom of three moved to Somalia years ago with her husband and three-year-old twins, for her husband's job at a university. Soon after, the family moved to Djbouti and Rachel gave birth to her third child in a pretty dangerous scenario where no healthcare would be available if anything went wrong. She ended up writing about that birthing experience for the New York Times and has since made a long, happy life in the Third World. From the Horn of Africa, Rachel has written an incredible book, run the Somalia marathon and started a running club for girls to encourage them to stay in school. She's raised her children and offered up valuable perspective on American Christianity and life overseas in publications like Christianity Today, Deadspin, Runner's World and more. In this interview, we talk about raising Third World kids, what it was like to write about the "Mother Theresa" of Somalia, Annalena Tonelli -- an incredible, Catholic woman who gave her life for impoverished Muslims. Rachel mentions, almost as a side note, that she is battling a non-aggressive cancer and honestly, that section of our conversation may have been the most inspiring of all to me. This lady has things to do and she isn't letting cancer get in the way! Connect with Rachel:

Gracy Olmstead is a beautiful writer, her pieces published regularly in the New York Times and many others. As someone who ingests thousands of words per week, I make a point never to miss hers. She's writes about culture, faith, politics, policy, farming, food and more -- and does so with a voice all her own. Her pieces are often focused on compromise, human dignity and life and she has a knack for luring in both sides of an issue and helping them hear one another. So important! Gracy is the mom of two little girls and grew up in rural Idaho. She's now in Virginia, where she gardens, bakes, writes and stays at home with her girls. In today's interview, we talk about the freelance writing lie and her process for coming up with ideas, as well as that tough mom-life balance when you are home with your kids and working. I loved what she had to say about why she loves working with the earth in gardening and how she approaches ideas about writing with such reverence. She wants every piece to be extremely thoughtful and honoring of the topic at hand, which usually means no breathless op/es within 24 hours of breaking news ;) She's got a new book coming out and recently started an amazing monthly newsletter that writers, book and culture lovers will want to subscribe too. Gracy counts writers she's loves to follow: Wendell Berry, Ross Douthat, Michael Brenda Dougherty, Elizabeth Bruenig, Emma Green & others. Manda Carpenter is 28 years old and has already been a foster mom for several years. It's a passion God put on her heart years go, in childhood, and she was just waiting for the opportunity to go for it. She met an incredible man, married him and the two set out on their foster journey. They even signed up to take on kids with significant psychological issues, those cases that not everyone might be willing to take on, She's an incredible advocate and a humble servant of Jesus. In the midst of motherhood, Manda is also thriving as a writer, speaker and leader. She recently came out with a devotional, "Space" and is working on her first full-length book. She has a couple of life mantras, including "Impressing is Exhausting" and "Get Too Attached" (in reference to being a foster parent). Honestly, it was so refreshing to speak with someone just letting God take the lead in life. She's got a platform, readers and followers, but Manda's heart is humble and pure. I never expected to be interviewing Rachel Barkley about one of the scariest moments of her life. Three weeks after giving birth to her first baby, Rachel woke up unable to feel her leg. In a whirlwind of events, she was soon rushed into surgery in attempt to remove a massive spinal tumor that had been growing for years. Not knowing if the tumor was cancerous or if doctors would be able to get it out, she went into surgery with the understanding of how grave the worst case scenario really was. Throughout it all, Rachel relied on her faith in God to get her through -- and the way she's handled it all has been nothing short of amazing. Thankfully, she came out of surgery with the best possible outcome, but that still meant a very long road ahead -- learning of how to walk again, regain function in other parts of her body and spending months in an in-patient rehab facility. All the while, she has a newborn baby Hudson who needed his Momma. In today's interview, I speak with Rachel about every part of her journey until today. She's still recovering and has a long way to go, but is thankful for the unexpected progress she's made. Even the doctors are amazed. It was an honor to hear Rachel's story and I know it's going to provide hope for others who are going through a dark time. What we talked about:

Nancy French is many things: writer, mother, wife, swimmer, survivor of sexual abuse. She's cultivated an incredible career as a ghostwriter of books for celebrities and political figures alike -- and written her own books, as well. Most recently, she wrote the biography of Alice Marie Johnson, the woman in prison for a non-violent drug offense -- famous for being released from prison due to advocacy from Kim Kardashian. Nancy interviewed Kim, who wrote the foreword of the book, as well. She's mom to three great kids -- one by adoption -- and wife to David French, a highly respected faith and culture writer who nearly ran for President on the Independent ticket in 2016. How did that play out for them? You'll find out. In today's interview, I speak with Nancy about everything from her young romance with David ( their love story that she recently wrote about in the Washington Post!) to adopting their daughter and what it was like that time she almost became a potential First Lady. We also talk about why she decided to speak out against President Donald Trump in 2016, revealing devastating sexual abuse she endured as a child. How did 2016 change her? Today’s episode of “Worth Your Time” is a real treat. I was honored when writer Shannan Martin agreed to speak with me, after becoming a HUGE fan of her writing.
Her two books — both incredible and worth buying — are “Falling Free: Rescued From the Life I Always Wanted” and “The Ministry of Ordinary Places” will convict you to your core the moment you crack them open.
Shannan’s story of building the life she wanted, complete with monetary security, good jobs, a great home, neighborhood and friends was turned upside down when she her husband Corey tuned into God’s call on their lives.
Shannan says:
It’s worth looking at the world through the lens of Jesus, that we can see beauty in hard places and we can see interruptions as our redemption.
They did a 180, moving to a place they never expected with their three children and striking up relationships with the most unlikely folks. They also ended up adopting their 4th child, a 19-year-old named Robert who brought unexpected blessing and joy to their new lives.
Shannan’s life is one example of how we can live a bit more like Jesus did here on earth. It’s a life that includes less money, lots of interruptions, reams of grace, humility you never thought you could muster and a true dependence on God for whatever may come with each day.
I was just as inspired and moved by hearing her in real life as I have been reading the words in her books. She’s got plenty to teach us all, but you can tell she doesn’t hold herself in any kind of high regard. She’s just listening to God and trying to love the people around her. It really is that simple.

Rita Soronen has been working on behalf of vulnerable children for decades and has been doing so for the Dave Thomas Foundation for many of those years. Today I spoke with her about why the work DTFA does is so vital right now — and what moves her to dedicate her life to this cause.
You’ve heard of Dave Thomas, the founder of Wendy’s restaurant? What you may not know is that he left a way more important legacy than hamburger’s when he died. The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is the only public nonprofit charity in the United States that is focused exclusively on foster care adoption.
It’s National Adoption Month and the reason I was so pumped to speak with Rita is because DTFA has found a way to get older kids adopted out of foster care at higher rates than in the past. This is an incredible accomplishment and so important for these kids, who too often linger in the system until adulthood, only to then suffer awful hardships like addiction, homelessness, depression and more.
To move the needle for this demographic is a massive accomplishment and we need to get the message out there. Through their “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids” program, they are truly making a difference. Listen in and see how you can be a part of this important change.

Bobbi McCormick is such a breath of fresh air! She lives up to her online persona, bringing joy and optimism into our conversation. We met years ago through the blogging world and I’ve followed her story through infertility, foster care, adoption and more.
I loved Bobbi’s perspective about “getting comfortable with being uncomfortable” and truly following God’s lead in those moments when we have no idea what to do.

Jess started an amazing company, “Headbands of Hope” when she was in college and it’s still thriving today, bringing style to many and plenty of headbands for children suffering from cancer. She’s got an amazing entrepreneurial story in today’s episode — one that makes you wonder how she had the gumption to keep going. But she did and the world is better for it.
Since founding her company, Jess has become a sought after speaker on the conference circuit. She’s built a career out of professional speaking jobs and is now training other women to do the same. I learned from Jess that people are dying to get more female speakers and we’ve got a gap to fill, friends. We’ve also got money to make in doing so, so don’t sell yourself short!
I really just enjoyed chatting with Jess today. She’s fun, genuine and truly encouraged me to keep reaching for those speaking goals I have.

Today’s interview got me thinking really hard. I wasn’t expecting to come with such profound revelations after speaking with author and pastor Stephanie Lobdell, but I surely did. You can see how part of that played out in my recent (vulnerability alert) Instagram post here.
Stephanie’s book, “Signs of Life: Resurrecting Hope out of Ordinary Losses” tackles some tough issues. While we love a good redemption story, most of us are not in the middle of extreme life traumas 24 hours a day. Most of us are dealing with the everyday battles: depression, negativity, infertility, self-image, busy-ness, stress, anxiety — you name it.
It’s nice to celebrate the Resurrection at Easter, but how about remembering why it matters everyday? Stephanie admits her book doesn’t necessarily cover the great tragedies of life, but the struggles that everyone can relate to. How do we get through when it feels so difficult? She gets honest about her battle with depression and her journey towards ministry leadership. I really appreciated Stephanie’s perspective and walked away with a load of things to consider.

There’s a tide turning in the United States. It’s not as loud as partisan media voices blasting from the TV, but it matters more. Briana Stensrud is helping make way for Christian women to embrace what it means to be fully pro-life, specifically as it relates to welcoming immigrants and refugees.
She helps lead Welcome, a community of women committed to creating a movement of Christ-like welcome in our country. It all goes back to loving the sojourner, Biblical hospitality, believing in the Imago Dei (every human created in God’s image), our call to be peacemakers and to continually invite the orphan, widow, marginalized and oppressed into love and safety.
It was interesting speaking with Briana about her work within the traditional pro-life space as it relates to ending abortion, and seeing how she transitioned to focusing on a larger, comprehensive pro-life ethic. I loved when she said, “You cannot scripturally justify prioritizing one vulnerable population over another.”
She has a Masters in Biblical and Theological studies from Dallas Theological Seminary so the woman knows what she’s talking about when it comes to scripture.

There are some interviews that make you step back and take a deep breath. That’s how I felt before picking up the phone to speak with Kelly Trent, the mother of Tyler Trent — a young man many became familiar with in 2018 when his battle with cancer went public. It wasn’t his plan to make it so, but his invigorating spirit and zest for life couldn’t be contained.
Tyler became known as a Purdue superfan, as he decked out for Purdue football games even as he was extremely sick with Osteosarcoma. The team took notice of him — but it wasn’t just the fandom. Tyler’s faith was a tangible part of his life, establishing his hope in something greater than this world. When he received a second diagnosis of cancer after being in remission for two years, he decided this time around would be worth something.
It was then he began a journey towards raising millions for cancer research, offering hope for others battling this awful disease and finding strength and resilience in the people around him, God and the things he loved most in life.
To say it was a privilege to speak with the incredible woman who raised Tyler would be an understatement. Kelly took the time to share her heart with me, walk listeners through Tyler’s cancer journey and talk to us about what it means even though he ultimately lost is life in early 2019.
It can be hard to comprehend how someone walks through the sickness and death of a child. It can be hard to understand how they continue to rely on God when everything feels like its falling apart. Listen is as Kelly talks about how her family — and Tyler — accomplished this even as death stood at their door.

Elaina Plott is the White House Correspondent for one of the best magazines in the country, The Atlantic. She’s a fantastic writer with the right sense of curiosity and detail to capture the unique essence of a story or pen a brilliant profile.
At only 26, she’s got bylines in places you may only dream of (GQ, Harpers Bazaar, etc.) and now finds herself on staff at a magazine freelancers are dying to get a their names inside of. She joins brilliant journalists from the past 100+ years in putting together this monthly publication covering politics, culture and humanity from the most interesting, thoughtful angles you will find.
I was fortunate enough to work with Elaina when we were both at National Review magazine and have followed her work ever since. It was incredible to speak with her today about her career trajectory, how her faith sustaints her, how she remains fair and balanced and some of her best-kept writing secrets. You know I indulged her a little in some of those more specific questions about finding the story, grabbing the right details and writing a beautiful lede.

Hospitality is making a comeback — or perhaps really trending for the first time in America. I have caught the bug, being inspired to love my neighbors (both literal and stranger) as a way to show kindness and God’s love. Leslie Verner has taken it up a notch — living out a life of hospitality in beautiful ways — taking from things she learned living 5 years overseas in China and traveling the world.
She’s not only tangibly living out love — by inviting refugee friends into her home, welcoming lonely mom friends to a group outing, making food and offering a place of rest to new church members (to name a few things) — she wrote about it all in her new book, “Invited: The Power of Hospitality an Age of Loneliness.”
The book is full of simple stories of welcome and kindness, and offers statistics and anecdotes about hospitality around the world. I found myself surprised at multiple bits and revved to ensure I don’t allow anyone I meet to feel unseen. Leslie is a gorgeous writer — and I can’t say that about every book I read. If you can appreciate a beautiful sentence with words in all the right places, almost singing a song with the way it is written, you will totally indulge in this book.
A mother of three young children, she also addresses how we can be there for others even when life is busy and chaotic. The reality is that we can’t afford not to be hospitable and there are a TON of ways to do it, things you probably don’t even realize. As Christians, I think this concept is one of the most important, especially as people become more isolated, depressed and lonely in a technological culture. Seriously, take some notes and get the book.
Leslie and I also chat about writing, the creative process, finding time and what it means to feel called to be a writer. Oh man, I could have chatted with her all day!

Lisa Graft’s vision and enthusiasm for leading women is infectious. In the beginning of our conversation, I knew her only from her movement, I Am Mother of the Year. By the end, I realized her passion, drive and goals reach far beyond local moms — she has a message for women across the country.
Aside from being amazed at everything Lisa accomplishes (and doing it while also prioritizing 9 hours of sleep!), I was incredibly moved by how she’s listened for and heard the voice of God guiding her in what she does. She’s recognized her calling and gone for it.
This isn’t about building a following for her. It’s about pursuing a dream God put in her heart to reach women — often moms specifically — about the lies they too often believe about themselves. In a world where Instagram perfection can be difficult for those of scrolling through everyday, Lisa has a different approach.

Amia Freeman had no idea when she went to an aerobics class many years ago, that it ultimately change her life in an incredible way. In the end, fitness helped her come to know God and get rid of the baggage she’d been carrying in her life for years.
In today’s episode, we discuss her childhood growing up with an alcoholic father, the rough years of early motherhood and the way God works through our issues when we move our bodies. As Amia put it in a recent post:
“Listen when you refuse to move your body you’ve decided to keep whatever is inside of you stuck.“
For years, Amia has been using and preaching the value and association of pairing fitness with faith. Then, she lost the use of her legs in a strange, stress-related incident related to some things she hadn’t overcome emotionally in her life. We talk about that and how she moved forward, walked again and then found Revelation Wellness, where she now works. It’s a pretty amazing story — and one that is certainly worth your time.

Nadine McGowan has energy, passion and drive I only wish I did. Two years into being a Mom, God gave her a vision of helping women find their purpose — and she followed that vision to the mountaintop without even knowing how she would would do it.
The end result was the creation of Purposeful Living, INC (the INC actually stands for “in Christ!”), where women in the Indianapolis area can find support groups, networking events, empowerment meetings, life coaching and more, at no cost for the most part. Of course this means, PLINC is a non-profit that requires many volunteers and generous donations, which is all part of what God has provided for Nadine to live out this mission.
In this episode, we discuss how Nadine was a trip to South Africa working with women there when she realized she needed to help women here when she got back. Women in the Hamilton County area aren’t physically poor, like those she met in South Africa, nor do they fit the “needy” stereotype you might expect a non-profit to serve. But, poverty comes mentally, emotionally and spiritually as well — and every woman can suffer in that way. I love what Nadine says here:
“By serving this demographic, because they have resources, because they are educated, when they can get ‘on purpose,’ they can impact the world so much more…and get out and do what they’re called to do.”
The materially privileged are those that have the means to make a huge world impact, but if they are off-kilter and unable to find their purpose, they may not be able to do everything their privilege would allow them to. We must serve everyone and Nadine has found this very specific, incredible purpose in serving this group.

It was honor to speak with Helen Raleigh for this week’s episode of the podcast. Helen is a immigrant to the United States from China. She came here with nothing but a dream of education and opportunity that her parents and grandparents never had. Her story is sure to inspire you.
In this episode, I talk to Helen about some of the unbelievable abuses she and her family suffered under Communism — and about why she believes America still offers the greatest opportunity for success in the world.
We discuss everything from China’s one-child policy to her thoughts on Presidential candidates presenting socialism as a viable option (and why she’s against it), as well as how she views white supremacy in this country today. She also tells about what’s going on in Hong Kong and why’s it’s so important we support the protestors there.

Rina Shah became a friend the moment I met her. We both have children ages 3 and 1 — and became moms after building our careers. It can be a hard transition, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Rina is a powerhouse in all the ways: She’s built a business, a non-profit, help run a campaign and is serious about bringing more women into leadership positions in politics and business. She’s also passionate about diversifying the Republican Party — as a woman of Indian decent — and values conversation, moderation and ideas.
She received some flack from pushing back against Trump 2016 and worked for the Independent candidate, Evan McMullin. We talk in this interview about valuing policies that work but keeping character in mind as well. She founded Women’s Public Leadership Network, something everyone should take note of!
She has an incredible family story — of where her parents came from and why she claims the title of “conservative” — and it’s worth tuning in just for that. Enjoy this conversation with Rina Shah!

Rachael Denhollander is a fierce light. That’s the first thing I thought after watching her testimony at the hearing against USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted of molesting hundreds of girls over decades.
Then, I got an early copy of her new book, “How Much is a Girl Worth?” and dug into the full story behind how Rachael became the face of the scandal that finally put Nassar behind bars.
I watched the HBO documentary, “Heart of Gold” and listened to the podcast, “Believed.” I saw Rachael speak at the Indiana National Prayer Breakfast and then, I got the opportunity to interview her for today’s episode.
Without Rachael’s courage and determination to see justice served for the hundreds of girls abused by Larry Nassar, the man may still be perpetrating abuse. As you’ll hear and read, she did it for the girls Nassar abused, but also for the whole the concept of justice as a whole and the girls to come who will suffer.
It’s not just about USA Gymnastics, but about “community protectionism” that exists within all kinds of organizational structures — churches, governments, families. The concept of justice has often been buried beneath important ideas like forgiveness and grace. Those things are certainly important, but in this situation, Rachael had to squarely focus on justice in order to ensure it would be rightly served.
Her thoughts on this deserver far wider broadcasting than this podcast can offer, but I hope you’ll take them to heart as you listen.

Brooke Martin’s story captivated me after I saw it shared on social media months ago. She’s a local news anchor in Indianapolis, so many people are used to seeing Brooke’s face and hearing her cheerful voice on TV. Most of us were not prepared for the news she shared about her personal life, when she and her husband published a video talking about a fatal diagnosis for their unborn baby girl.
Viewers watched the initial video and then followed Brooke’s pregnancy journey, as she continued working on TV nearing her due date. As you’ll hear in today’s episode, she already knew baby Emma wouldn’t survive long past birth, if at all. So how did she do it? How did Brooke share her journey so publicly, continue working and become a symbol of strength for so many women facing infant loss?
“What’s happened to us — Emma Noelle — has been my deliverance. She has taught me so much more than I could have ever learned without her.”
I was honored to speak with Brooke so candidly about her experience, what it was like getting the diagnosis, walking through pregnancy and how she relied on God’s strength to get her through each day. After baby Emma was born, Brooke held a Celebration of Life for her, and invited families in the community had experienced infant loss to join her there. The stories that came from that event were heartbreaking and healing at the same time.
This is a very hard thing to talk about, but Brooke’s beautiful spirit and her reliance on the Lord make it something worth hearing and sharing.

Trisha Lopez-Davis has the warmest voice and it was an honor to invite her into my kitchen for today’s interview. She’s the co-founder of Hope City Church in Carmel, Indiana — and also a speaker, author, marriage ministry leader and mom of 5.
In today’s interview, I speak with Trisha about her recent experience of adopting two children, after already raising three boys, and what it looks like to parent children of a different race who have seen a lot of trauma in their lives.
We also talk about when Trisha and her husband, Justin, walked through infidelity in their marriage, causing their marriage and position as pastors to come to a screeching halt. How did they overcome? She tell us — and how they ultimately began a marriage ministry because of it. Her humility and perspective is so beautiful here. One of my favorite quotes from this interview:
“Believe that if God has called something on your life — His love for you and belief in you isn’t circumstantial. If you try something and fail, it doesn’t change His love or perception of you. But try anyway.”
Trisha also speaks to me about a time recently when she experienced debilitating depression — and how she dealt with it when she didn’t want to tell anyone that she actually reached the the point of suicidal thoughts. She had so many words of wisdom and truths about God’s presence in our lives to share.
Though I recorded this weeks ago, I really cherished listening to it again and scooping up some of her advice once again. I know you will get that same feeling as you listen.

Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa is so compelling to listen to. Get her started about being a pro-life feminist and you’ll just want to keep asking questions — so I did (which is why this interview is so long!) She’s not your average pro-lifer. The girl balks at political Parties (she’s an Independent), doesn’t go to church (“agnostic”) and is pro-life from wombxa to tomb — focusing on everyone from the most vulnerable unborn babies to men on death row to the men, women and children in detainment camps in the border right now.
A few weeks ago, Destiny’s organization “New Wave Feminists” spearheaded an effort that brought together more than 50 pro-life groups to bring necessary personal hygiene and baby products to families being kept in detainment camps along the Southern borders. Widespread reports said families didn’t have enough diapers, toothbrushes, shampoo — and more.
Pro-lifers made it clear they stand for all life — be it the unborn or the mom and her child trying to find a better life in the United States. Destiny is my favorite spokeswoman for the pro-life cause because she expertly articulates the reason we are struggling with it so much these days:
Dehumanization is the root of every single societal ill that we have. Dehumanization breeds more dehumanization — and the only anecdote to that is to humanize others.
Destiny and her friends brought over $100,000 worth of items to the border, delivering their load alongside the pro-life Catholic nuns taking care of people nearby. They had no help from Members of Congress (these happened to be Democrats, but we’ve no doubt it would have been bipartisan busy-ness) standing around nearby, too involved in their own press opportunities to help out.
In this interview, we discuss what it means to be a pro-life feminist, to respect ALL life and how we can work towards a world where abortion is unnecessary and unthinkable. Listen in if you want a thoughtful conversation about what all that means.

Ryan Hampton spent nearly a decade addicted to opioids. He also worked for the Clinton White House, had a good family and education. He wasn’t the type of person you might expect to become addicted to drugs.
But what we’ve learned in the past few years is that addiction can affect anyone. It doesn’t matter your race, class, sexuality, background — addiction doesn’t discriminate and if you are wired for it, it’s nearly impossible to escape once it begins.
But Ryan did escape. And he did far more than that — he has built up a powerful movement of recovery advocacy that attempts to remove the stigma and shame associated with addiction, and put a face of humanity back on victims. Only four years sober, Ryan has already written a a critically acclaimed book, “American Fix,” endorsed by President Bill Clinton, former Speaker Newt Gingrich and other well known figures across the political spectrum.
Want to fix the drug problem? You can’t be partisan about it. Thankfully, finally it seems lawmakers across the board are coming together to combat this horrific epidemic — which killed 72,000 in 2017 alone. But, as Ryan shares in today’s episode, talk is cheap and not enough is being done yet. In addition to publishing his book, Ryan has massed a huge following on social media and implemented multiple advocacy programs urging victims and those in recovery to share their stories, vote and demand to be heard. I loved this graphic that Ryan shared:
I was riveted by Ryan’s book and experience. As I mother two young children, I can’t help but worry about how they will navigate this world inhabited by drugs. I’m invested in advocating for better prevention methods, especially, but also for the many other layers involved in solving this crisis. In today’s interview, Ryan explains why addition is a disease, how he thinks we can overcome as a society and addresses some misconceptions even I had.

You know when you meet someone you were destined to be friends with? That’s how I felt upon meeting Alexandra Hudson — Lexi to her friends. She’s got a creative spirit I vibe with and is a writer after my own heart, spending her days focused on the lost art of civility, conversation, discourse and more.
She’s writing a book on the subject, while at the same time writing and working for several other respectable places, landing plum fellowships and passing on her creative energy to anyone who crosses her path. Also, she’s published at places like The Wall Street Journal, the Hill, Quillette and many more. She went to the London School of Economics (wow!) and loves philosophy, the arts, world travel and jazz. She’s one of those people could talk with for hours about really important — or minute — topics and come away refreshed every time.
Lexi has been a huge encouragement to me in the past few months and I knew I had to get her on the podcast to talk with me about her book, her life mission and why she knew working for the federal government wasn’t life-giving for a creative spirit so invested in making a real difference in the world. Not that government doesn’t do good things — they do — but having been there myself, I can tell you it stifles a person who needs to write and breathe and express themselves creatively.

Bethany Mandel has been outspoken since I met her. She’s blunt, to the point and has a lot of strong opinions. She’s been able to make use of those as a freelance writer, publishing opinions on everything from vaccines to guns to privacy issues and more on impressive outlets like the New York Times, the Atlantic and the Washington Post. In today’s interview, we dig into the vaccine debate (she’s pro-vaxx) and a couple of other issues she’s written about.

S.E. Cupp is one of those people who rarely lets things go to her head. We met years ago, back in the days when hardly anyone had Twitter but us silly folks in the political world. Over that time, S.E. Cupp has gone from an already accomplished writer (she was at the New York Times way back when and published her first book in 2008) to become one of the most familiar faces on network television.
She’s co-hosted a few different shows on the CNN network, but it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that she picked up her own show, on their sister network, HLN. The show was so great, it was brought into the regular weekend CNN lineup. Now, she hosts “SE Cupp Unfiltered” on Saturday nights. She’s known as a moderate conservative who chose not to vote for President Trump and has no trouble pushing back where she finds the Right…in the wrong.
“I love to find common ground. I love to find solutions to problems big and small. I don’t want to gather people — who sound and talk like me — in a room and yell at the camera for an hour. I want to be the sort of a place you can breathe and actually hear people and have a conversation and maybe learn something.”S.E. Cupp
The girl is in her element on a debate panel and projects a confidence and intelligence I can only dream of. She’s charismatic as all get-out (would make an amazing politician, really) and is a grateful mother to one adorable 4-year-old, Jack. I was incredibly honored that she invited me on her show last year to discuss my book, “Leaving Cloud 9” — and she has always been the most kind, gracious person even as her name ID skyrocketed. Charlotte Pence has an attitude few can match. She’s kind, gracious and welcomes the criticism her family has dealt with serving in public life. She’s managed to find a beautiful balance between her personal life as a screenwriter and author and playing the role of Second Daughter, the middle child of Vice-President Mike Pence.
In her first non-fiction book, “Where You Go: Life Lessons From My Father,” Charlotte reveals her life story and a peek behind the scenes into the Pence family. She talks with me about her Dad’s encouragement to pursue her dreams and his ability to put his family first despite everything his job comes with.
“He will answer the phone if one of us is calling him, no matter what meeting he’s in or whoever he is with,” said Charlotte.
It was refreshing to hear about the way a family that is so public stays healthy mentally. The Vice-President previously served as governor of Indiana and was a Congressman for many years as well, so Charlotte has grown up in the spotlight a bit, but it’s clear her father has always ensured their family was never sacrificed for his political career.
I was curious how she handled some fo the criticism thrown at her Dad — and how he manages to remain so even-keeled, never uttering an upset word.
“Watching my dad treat others with kindness and grace even when they aren’t treating him that way has been really influential to me,” she said.
In this interview, we also talk about Charlotte’s unexpected conversation with Hillary Clinton on Inauguration Day 2017, the kind words Michelle Obama imparted to her — and what it was like visiting some of the most rural areas of the campaign trail throughout 2016.
On 2016: “There was a level of enthusiasm for that ticket that I’ve never seen in public life. We went to more rural areas of America and would see people lining up, waiting for us, making signs, people were excited about someone who wasn’t from Washington, DC . People just wanted something different. I’m not a political mind but from the people I met and saw, most were people who had never been involved in politics before. One lady said her father had never voted in an election, but he was going to vote for Donald Trump…[but] he passed away before the election, so their family came out to vote for him.”
On meeting President Trump: “He was very gracious and kind…he made time in his schedule to meet with me and have breakfast with my parents and I and get to know us. It was important to us, me being the only sibling available to be there to kind of give my opinion and my advice about it. I was able to meeting the siblings eventually and spent a lot of time with them on the campaign trail. It was cool to see their family interact in such a kind and meaningful way. They are ver supportive of each other and since we are so supportive of each other, it was cool to see.”
On meeting Hillary Clinton: “It was cool to see her, right on Inauguration Day….it was probably a weird day for her and she was there and she was really kind. She took time to talk to us and talk to us about what we were doing, talking about school and what I studied. It was very meaningful to me to see that…at the end of the day people are just people and she definitely understands what its like to have a kid in politics and raise a family [that way]. It was very interesting for me — and also fun to see people coming together, and not just being partisan. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Whitney Athayde dreams of eating and living fully off her farm, where she’s raising three kids (and about to give birth to her fourth ) — and her lifestyle is fascinating.
In today’s conversation, Whitney and I chat about homesteading (which she defines!), natural, home births, why she ultimately chose to live organically and how caring for the earth and her kids is how she lives out her faith. Whitney says:
“My husband and I both pray every day to be good stewards of the land, the children and the resources given to us. This is how we personally have chosen to glorify God…to show we are going to take really good care of this little corner of the earth we have been given and these children we have been giving. Stewarding is a really important part of my faith — being intention in general.”
We also dive into a conversation about grief and how Whitney processed the tragic death of her mother, who she was extremely close to. I was impressed and inspired by some of the resources and thoughts she mentioned. If you’ve ever had to deal with grief — and you certainly will if you haven’t — you’ll want to hear what she has to say. She mentions in this episode: “We’re called to grieve to differently and we have a hope and joy that will come for us.”
I respect Whitney’s beautiful approach to life and how she has shifted to ensure she’s living in a way that makes her proud and respects the foundational principles she holds as a human being. She’s eating eggs from her own backyard, cleaning with Thieves oil, trying her hand at bee-keeping and spending her days growing these amazing human beings — and you’re gonna love her personality to boot. Anna LeBaron is an incredible woman. She grew up the daughter of polygamous cult leader, Ervil LeBaron. She has dozens of siblings and lived through heartbreaking trauma and abuse as a child. Even after escaping the cult at the age of 13, Anna went through even more horrific circumstances no child should ever have to experience.
In today’s podcast episode, Anna recounts some of the stories from her past, drawing on her book, “The Polygamist’s Daughter.” I read the book cover to cover — and it was riveting and well-written. I was honored Anna took the time to speak with me today. She is a warm and friendly soul — and quite the book worm like myself. Anna says:
Your parents are going to do the best job they can. My mom did the best job she could with what she had. Forgiving and letting go of some of those grievances is so important…that frees you.
I met Anna last year when she led my book launch team. In fact, she is a professional book launcher these days, having led teams for Jen Hatmaker, Bob Goff and most recently, the best selling “Girl, Wash Your Face” by Rachel Hollis. Pretty impressive stuff! I love following her on social media, where she exhibits positive vibes and plenty of social media marketing wisdom. Oh yeah — and she loves CrossFit! — and of course we talked about that in this episode as well.
Anna proves the resilience of the human spirit and the power of redemption through faith in Christ. She’s now a Christian who has worked through the issues of her origin family, and she has shown that there is life after even the worst of trauma.

It wouldn’t be a complete convo without some book talk. We discuss our books and how we have dealt with some of the disappointment that can come with being a writer, even with a big accomplishment like that under your belt.
This is the most freely I’ve ever really talked politics (at least in audio form), so you can get a peek at what I really think, ha ha. Thanks for tuning in!

I’m so excited to speak today with Annie Grace, the founder of “This Naked Mind” — a book and a large community dedicated to helping people change their relationship with alcohol, or quit all together. I found Annie after I sought a resource for finding a healthier relationship with alcohol. Since I started drinking my senior year of high school, I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with the substance. And a substance it is — as Annie points out the major health downfalls of drinking. After quitting drinking, digging into the science behind the substance and realizing there were a lot of people out there who didn’t quite feel like a program like AA was for them, she started her 30-day challenge. The program has morphed into a massive Facebook group, live support groups, a yearly conference, training programs & more. Annie says:

The program has morphed into a massive Facebook group, live support groups, a yearly conference, training programs & more. Annie says:
“The thing I hear most is, why didn’t I do this sooner?”
I’m so impressed by how Annie turned this simple transformation in her own life into an entire career — and only because she was so enthusiastic about sharing how positively her life changed when she quit drinking. She also frequently tackles the dicey issue of the “mommy drinking culture,” where wine brands, memes and jokes tell moms they need alcohol to deal with the stress of parenthood.I did the 30-day challenge in December — and since then have cut my drinking back by probably 10 times. I had gotten to the point of drinking wine almost daily for stress relief and I was feeling gross, but struggling to stop. I thought of all the experiences I’ve had with alcohol over the years an realized the lies I’d been telling myself about why it was so great. I appreciate Annie’s approach and that she makes “normal” people like me realize we are not alone in feeling uncomfortable with relying on a substance for stress relief. Also for me, I felt it was a barrier to my relationship with God and ultimately increased anxiety in the long run.

I’ve watched Lila Rose, the president and founder of the impactful pro-life organization Live Action, from afar for man years. She was just arriving on the scene back when I first made my way in Washington, DC.
Lila started the organization when she was only 15 years old. At 30, she’s grown it into a very visible and powerful entity that is helping to change hearts and minds around the issue of abortion. Her commitment to the issue from such a young age and the reasons behind why she’s dedicated her life to this cause are admirable. Lila says:
“The ultimate antidote to abortion is people who are living lives of love.”
Abortion is a hard issue to tackle on a daily basis. She’s received death threats and plenty of hate mail, but Lila doesn’t waver on her belief that life is worth fighting for. With the recent controversy over abortion laws in New York, Alabama and Georgia, Lila has been very busy.
She has also been making the rounds in podcast world, her interview with Candace Owens last week receiving quite a bit of attention for discussing something you hear little about these days: chastity until marriage. Kind of refreshing in this day and age if you ask me!
She also launched her own podcast and recently announced her first pregnancy, so I can only imagine it makes the issue she cares most about even a little more significant.

I had no idea that women were making such big moves in the conservation space, but Gabriella Hoffman is one of them who is paving the way!
She’s an avid fisher (wo)man, likes hunting and dedicates her time to efforts that empower both men and women in the conservation field. In fact, she has a whole podcast and YouTube series about it! At the same time, Gabby runs her own marketing and consulting business — and her entrepreneurial spirit is incredibly inspiring and contagious!
Though Gabby and I met through our political connections in DC, I’ve become so interested in her hobbies, which she’s turned into ventures of their own. In this interview, we talk about being a woman in these male-dominated spaces, what’s its actually like to be a member of the NRA and why she loves what she does so much.
Her parents fled Lithuania as adults and she and her sister were born in California soon afterward. Because of her history, Gabby cares deeply about the freedom offered here in the United States. Like me, she enjoys the political scene, but has plenty of other things she is passionate about — and she shares it all in this episode.

I’ve been watching and listening to Shannon Bream on Fox News for years, so when I got the chance to hear her speak and meet her last summer, I was thrilled! Her career story was so inspiring — and then I found out she was writing a book!
That book, her first and only (as she will tell you!), is released today! I was lucky enough to interview Shannon for the podcast and since the book release just so happens to fall on a Tuesday, we got very lucky.
In our interview, Shannon reveals:
“I got fired from my first TV job..he said, ‘I don’t know why anyone ever put you on TV or thought that was a good idea. You’re the worst person I’ve ever seen on TV and you’re never going to make it in this business.”
Shannon is truly as sweet as she seems on TV, but also a serious lawyer lady who values truth! More importantly, she is a Christian who values her faith above all — and has used it in some pretty rough things life has thrown at her, including very serious health problems.
Things got so bad that Shannon even considered ending her own life at one point, something she writes about in the book and speaks to me about in this episode. I admit, I was surprised to hear that and to read about the extent of her issues. You would never know it watching this beautiful, talented woman on TV, but she has had to overcome so much.
It’s still a battle and like all of us, she is a work in progress, but Shannon’s awesome perspective on life and her incredible relationship with God is something to admire. I was so honored to share this time with her and I know you’ll be blessed by it too.

Faith Clarke’s son, Jaedon, was diagnosed with Autism at the age of 2. Since then, she’s been on a roller coaster of parenthood. But Faith isn’t the kind of person who just lets things happen. She armed herself with knowledge, awareness and resources — enough to go around to other parents who were unexpectedly living out the journey of Autism with their children.
After Jaedon was diagnosed, Faith eventually created the organization, Melody of Autism to provided resources, community and support for other families. She wrote the book “Parenting Like a Ninja” and has become a fierce advocate for children and parents in the Autism community.
In our interview, Faith speaks about how faith impacted her experience with a child with special needs and poignantly, how God showed her how her son was answering the prayers of many people. She felt God was giving her a responsibility and an opportunity to offer hope and help to others — and she took it. What I loved most about our conversation was when Faith told me why she called her organization “Melody of Autism.” She said this:
“Find the music, don’t be in conflict with it — but be in alignment with it. So many therapies were trying to stop Autism and trying to control it and I shifted to try and understand my son and be in sync with him. When you an come in sync with yourself…can we step into peace and harmony and flow WITH, not against, the life we have?”
Amen and amen! I think this applies to our lives in a multitude of ways and is wisdom for the ages. Faith is also a podcaster, a writer and has a new venture for entrepreneurial moms in the Autism space. Talk about an inspirational lady!

Annafi Wahed left a lucrative job in finance to join the 2016 Hillary Clinton campaign. She was unfulfilled by her career and wanted to do something to make a difference.
Like many people, helping out with a monumental Presidential campaign seemed like a good way to do that immediately. She was blindsided on Election Day 2016 when Donald Trump won the election — and admits, she shed more than a few tears in the days that followed. Annafi says:
“Even if you can’t change the world today, if you change your world — your small sphere of influence today — that could someday change the world.”
But she soon dried her tears and start having conversations with those she didn’t agree with. She didn’t like the vitriol coming from her fellow liberals and wondered if Trump voters were really the horrible, racist people those she knew cast them as.
Her curiosity led her to places she never expected and she eventually started The Flip Side, a daily newsletter than offer both sides of the political aisle on big issues of the day. She’s still a hardcore liberal, but has lost friends who don’t like her approach to respecting conservatives. The Flip Side has exploded in growth as people from both Parties and in between hunger to find common ground and courtesy once again.

Alex Perry has an infectious personality — cheerful and spirited — she is the kind of positive warrior everyone would like to have in their life. I’m guessing that’s why she’s so great at her job teaching people how to craft and share their stories through public speaking.
After starting her career working with individuals who were unable to speak — either from birth or a condition — as a speech therapist, she transitioned to started her own business, PS with Alex.
Alex says:
My basic underlying belief is that we all have a message to share and we owe it to those that an’t speak to speak well.
I got a taste of her skills last summer, when we met for coffee to discuss a few ideas for speaking I was doing for my upcoming book tour. Even spending one hour with Alex got my gears going. She truly knows how to bring the important messages to the surface. That’s partly why I was so excited she agreed to chat with me for today’s episode.
We’ve all heard that statistic that people fear public speaking more than death. In today’s episode, we tackle why that is — and get to the root of why Alex loves her job and how every single person has something worth sharing with the world.

The day I started this podcast, I knew I’d eventually interview my best friend, Michelle Cordero. She is kind, courageous and resilient, having overcome a childhood filled with domestic violence, depression and a broken home — I’ve always wondered how she managed not to dwell on the things that could have held her back.
Today she shares what she’s learned from her past, from the recent death of a close friend of cancer and how parenting her high-energy and uniquely sweet little boy, who is 5, taught her how to trust her gut even when teachers and experts told her something different. Spoiler alert: Her gut was right.
Michelle says this of her challenging few years raising a rambunctious boy:
“Trust your gut. You know your kid…you are your child’s only advocate and you have to stand up for them. Don’t let one teacher tell you what’s best. You know what’s best as their parent.”
Michelle is also mom to a 3-year-old girl and works full-time at the Heritage Foundation, commuting 1.5 hours both ways each day to Washington, DC from her home in the suburbs of Virginia. Despite her busy life, she manages to make time for bettering her marriage, taking care of herself through exercise at Orange Theory (we hear that a lot on this podcast!) and doing all kinds of really memorable things with her kids each weekend.
You’ll love her “list idea” for keeping yourself happy and on track — and she talks about how it’s helped her in her frequent struggles with depression. We also talk about about false stereotypes of conservative women and why would would both give our right leg to have a long, drawn out sit down dinner with one of our favorite writers, Elizabeth Gilbert.

Carrie Sheffield dreams really big. And she doesn’t just dream, she takes action. Her big, hair, audacious goal (some call it a “BHAG”) was creating a media empire in BOLD Media.
She’s getting there and it’s awesome to watch from pretty close by. I’ve known Carrie for many years on the DC media scene, but we only recently spoke more personally, and it’s been a treat. She’s a truly, genuine person to respect and quite the role model for young women today.
Carrie says:
“We exist because we want to build the beloved community that Martin Luther King spoke about….the concept of beloved community, we believe that exists here and now and it’s our responsibility to build that everyday.”
In today’s episode, we talk about how she went from a DC intern to writing op/eds for some of the nation’s most well-known newspapers, speaking to thousands and starting her own media company.
BOLD isn’t just any old platform. It seems to bring diverse minds together to talk about difficult issues in a civil and respectful way. You can find panels live on BOLD throughout everyday, featuring people of all colors and ideologies.
As the company partners with more publications, organizations and potentially TV networks, there’s no doubt you’ll be seeing BOLD on your screen in the near future if you haven’t already. Carrie is living out her dream beautifully — and psst, she was just featured in the Wall Street Journal column, “The Secrets of Wealthy Women.”

Picture yourself in the 7th grade cafeteria eating Fritos, drinking Sprite and complaining about having to go to gym class after lunch. Those are some of my first memories of Lynn Downey. I never would have imagined we’d be chatting it up on a podcast (those didn’t exist) gulp 20+ years later.
But here we are! Lynn followed her dreams of becoming a Hollywood actress after majoring in theater in college — and I ended up writing and communicating. I’m so happy we could merge these two crazy professions for an online conversation reunion. Even though we haven’t seen each other in years, Lynn’s fun personality and confidence shined through.
I loved when she talked about ego, self-awareness & how hard we can be on ourselves as professionals, saying this:
“I think that the ego is literally trying to save our life, physically and emotionally. Like, if you do that bad, then you’ll die!”
She’s been a working actress in LA for 14 years and yes, you may have seem her in a thing or two. What I loved about this conversation was connecting with Lynn as a creative. It reminded me that no matter which art you choose to practice, the creative process translates. We talked about learning to accept the process it takes to even BEGIN creating the thing. And that is part of accepting yourself, your passion all that it takes to get there.
She’s also been on a roller coaster of a spiritual journey and has finally accepted she may just stay out in crazy California for life (or maybe not!) This is a great convo and you creative peeps will most definitely get something out of it.

Kira Davis is an outspoken political writer, activist, actress, film writer and director, mom and podcast host. Yes, we’ve got another woman who keeps busy busy busy with her many passions, which means Kira and I get along great 🙂
Kira says:
“The real problem with race relations is the lack of grace. We can never have an honest conversation about race if each party is not willing to come to the table and say, I’m giving my right to be offended.”
You may recognize her from a couple of viral videos, her online conversation with President Barack Obama or hits on Fox News. But it’s not just her spicy takes on political issues that make Kira awesome — she’s the writer and director of a new film about Harriet Tubman, which was recently featured at the Toronto Black Film Festival.
I respect Kira’s courage in voicing opinions that aren’t always popular with those around her — and her willingness to be vulnerable and kind in all she does. When I met Jennifer Schubert-Akin, I thought she was one of the kindest, gracious women I’d ever encountered. Little did I know there was much more to her than that.
As the founder of the Steamboat Institute, a non-profit policy organization based in beautiful Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Jennifer has proven herself a determined and dedicated warrior for freedom, free speech and Constitutional principles.
Quote from Jennifer:
We believe the most important thing we can do right is attracting people from all ideologies — left, right and in between — to hear reasonable arguments where people don’t scream at each other. I like to say, it does not take much intellectual rigor to call someone stupid. It does, however, require intellectual rigor to think through your own arguments, if you have to debate someone on the facts.Jennifer Schubert-Akin
Not only that, she is an accomplished athlete who will completed her 25th Boston Marathon in a row this year and has run many 100-mile ultra-marathons, including the famous Leadville trail marathon multiple times.
It’s that grit and hard work that she puts into running races that took over 24 hours that gave her the tenacity it takes to found an organization, no small feat. But she didn’t just found Steamboat — it’s thriving. Now in its 11th year, the Steamboat Institute brings names like Steve Forbes, Carly Fiorina, Ben Sasse and Ryan Zinke to the mountains for its annual Freedom Conference.
Though Jennifer is conservative, she aims to foster robust debate on issues that matter from both sides of the aisle — bringing in both liberals and conservatives to debate hot issues in their “Campus Liberty” debate series. Civil dialogue is key and boy, do we need more of that these days!
I loved talking with Jennifer about how hard work in one aspect of life translates to other parts of your life. I can see that so much in her and admire all that she’s done to build this growing & inspiring organization. She is certainly a female role model to all you ladies out there!

I first heard today’s guest, Linda Znachko, unexpectedly at an event several months ago. She had me in tears within a few minutes of telling her story. The same could be said of our interview today, where Linda joined me at my house to talk about her beautiful ministry, He Knows Your Name.
Simply put, this organization gives abandoned babies dignity in death. When a baby is abandoned outdoors or at the hospital in some kind of tragic circumstance, Linda is the one who comes to that baby’s side, taking custody of the child, giving them a name, a funeral and a headstone.
Her ministry extends beyond just babies, and she’s been given the opportunity to help women mourning stillbirths, abo rtions and even the deaths of older children. There are so many families in need who cannot afford funerals or headstones. I’d never considered the importance of a headstone until reading her book, which showcases how beautifully families have been able to find closure through this simple gesture.
The circumstances Linda encounters everyday are heartbreaking, but she has taken up this task with humility and courage. The friendships forged across many lines and the ability to share the love of Christ with people dealing with the hardest thing they may ever experience are priceless. I was truly honored to have Linda in my home to share her stories.

Today’s guest on on “Worth Your Time” is Erin Hawley, an inspiring momma who has just moved her crew of two young boys to Washington, DC to support her husband, Josh, the newest Senator from Missouri.

It all comes from what she’s learned about love from being a mom.
Erin’s pathway to successful career woman began humbly on a farm in New Mexico, which she tells listeners about. Ever felt like you were going crazy when political issues get hot? I feel ya. So does today’s podcast guest, Audrey Scagnelli.
Bipartisanship and civility is kind of her middle name.
She’s the founder of Sanity Media, a new online hangout for moderates, liberals, conservatives – and some non-politicals, too. Her group is united by a common belief in the importance of listening to each other, and in the possibilities of pragmatism and collaboration.
It’s possible — and Audrey has found a ton of folks who are on board with the idea of conversation, moderation, respect and civility. She’s partnered with and interviewed a co-founder of MoveOn.org, representatives from the Bipartisan Policy Center and many who have embraced the idea of bipartisan dinner parties in order to strike up relationships with those across the aisle.
It’s our shared humanity that has been lost in the online bickering and Audrey aims to bring us all back together. Trillia Newbell has a voice that radiates joy. You’ll hear that in today’s episode, when I speak with her about her career as a writer, her love of the gospel and about important topics like racial diversity, Christians in the age of Trump and a hope greater than this world.
Trillia is the author of many books, most recently a bible study on Romans, but her book “United: Captured by God’s Vision for Diversity” is where I first read her words.
After getting the chance to meet her at the Gospel Coalition Conference last year, I was thrilled when she accepted the invitation to chat with me on “Worth Your Time.” Trillia’s wise words about staying joyful, hopeful and embracing the neighbors and friends God has put into our lives were a breath of fresh air. You can tell she knows how to preach!
At one point in our conversation, I told her I hoped we wouldn’t be dealing with the same racial divisions and issues we are today in 25 years — wondering how I could raise my children to the ones who change this. She reminded me of something that’s hard to swallow, but true:
“Until Jesus returns and all things are made new, we are going to be in that already-but-not-yet waiting season…. it can get better, but it will not end until Jesus returns.”
This is a fallen world and it’s important to remember that we will never solve all the problems here on earth. It doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do our best, but we must recognize that sinners will always be sinners.
This mentality always reminds me of Lauren Daigle’s “O Lord,” which I have listened on repeat many times while dealing with tough issues that seem to have no solution:

Jessica Hulsey Nickel’s first advocacy project came when she was in elementary school — and she hasn’t stopped educating others about addiction and prevention since then. It’s been 20 years –and since then she founded the Addiction Policy Center.
As a little girl, her parents both suffered from drug-use disorders and she spent long stints in foster care and living with grandparents as her parents navigated their way through grueling addictions.
Her tough beginnings led her to a life of passionate advocacy, rather than becoming a statistic of the drug epidemic herself. She found herself at Princeton University and not long after, working with every President from Bill Clinton to Donald Trump.
She’s re-creating the conversation around addiction, cultivating attitudes and approaches to drug–use disorders centered around the science behind addiction, the humanity of those affected and the tangible ways we can combat this crisis one person at a time.
I’ve been so inspired by her work and measured approach. She’s helping teach us all how to be better friends, neighbors, parents and siblings. I loved when she said, “There’s nothing more powerful than a well-informed mother.”
It reminded me of the article I wrote recently expressing the power that moms have to transform this addiction crisis and get those death toll numbers down significantly.

Intuitive eating sounds vague, mysterious even — but it’s simpler than you think. Also, did you know the way to stop feeling guilty about eating is to eat MORE of what you love?
Dietitian Lauren Rieker, who specializes in eating disorders and founded Renovate Your Plate, is a different kind of nutritionist. She says “emotional eating” can be a good thing — and gets into the meat and potatoes (no pun intended) of WHY we binge or restrict — or just feel plain bad about what we eat.
“Diet culture tell us what we shouldn’t trust our bodies, that we should put our nutrition into an app and have an app tell you what to eat, versus listening to your hunger and fullness cues…once you make peace with food and remove that judgment, then you can start talking about nutrition and how it can benefit your body.” Lauren Reiker, Renovate Your Plate
Intuitive Eating — Not Diets
She doesn’t believe in diets and her words of wisdom on this topic are like a warm blanket on a cold day. You don’t have to start 2019 with restriction. In fact, if you do — you’re on a mission to failure.
I spoke with Lauren on Facebook Live on January 1st as well here.
90% of women are either currently dieting or diet often, and 1 in 4 of those women go on to develop an eating disorders. We don’t have to live this way. As a survivor of an eating disorder, I’ve read a lot of material about this but Lauren’s perspective is new and refreshing. Don’t miss it.

Beverly Hallberg really is a boss babe. She started her own media training and public speaking company — District Media Group — 10 years ago. This week on “Worth Your Time,” I speak with her about that entrepreneur life.
It hasn’t been easy, but Beverly has built an incredibly successful company and has spent hours (for example!) teaching and training some very high profile clients how to speak on television. We’re not naming any names, but let’s just say she’s the big time.
She’s become a great friend over the past several years — and I hired her to help train me for several public speaking gigs this year. The girl knows her stuff — and is truly genuine, seriously hardworking and such a sweet friend.
It’s always fascinating to learn from the pros. You may recognize her from her own regular appearances for analysis on network news as well. Enjoy this interview with Beverly Hallberg!

Laura Skladzinksi is a total rockstar. I first discovered Laura through our shared love of blogging and running — and we’ve remained online friends for years. Luckily, we’ve had the chance to meet in person multiple times as well.
I met Laura on her trek to run 50 full marathons — one in every state — by the age of 25. She easily surpassed her goal and now she’s actually run 107 full marathons (wowza!)
But that’s not the only impressive thing about Laura. She’s also a brand manager at Price Waterhouse Coopers, where she jets around the country training brands and loving her job. She used to live smack dab in the middle of New York City and one day just picked up and moved out to beautiful Colorado. That’s inspiring in and of itself!
Last but not least, Laura forged her way into politics this year, running for office in her town of Superior, Colorado. While this interview was recorded before Election Day, I’ll let you in on a little secret — she won! Laura is a fanatastically positive, independent woman that I would want as a role for my own daughter, and has plenty of invaluable advice to offer.

Words have such power. That’s why ‘Kicheko,’ a social good jewelry business founded by Sarah Bayot, elicits happiness. It means “laughter” in Swahili and was born out of Sarah’s love for the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is there, in Uvira, that over 30 orphaned children live and eat and go to school. (Check out the trip I took there with Sarah in these posts: here, here, here and here.) Sarah has visited the DRC seven times and has invested her time, money, prayers and business into the lives of these kids who have grown up with her as a friend and mentor. Without mothers and fathers, the children are reliant on adult figures who love and care for them to procure wisdom, protection and unconditional love. Sarah’s passion for Congo combined with her creative spirit and mind for business led to the creation of a business that is now going over three years strong. She’s grown into an inspirational entrepreneur, starting from scratch and Googling “how-tos,” building a gorgeous website and online presence and hacking the world of online shopping. I think everyone has a pocket dream — to create something out of nothing. And for people that actually do it, there’s a lot of admiration, support, curiosity when you watch someone else do it. It can be fuel for yourself to keep going for yourself. While Kicheko is a for-profit, business, it is also a social good brand. They give back with every piece of jewelry sold, specifically sending money toward the Mango Tree School the orphans are educated at. So plug in your headphones and listen in our conversation about living a life that matters and doing what your heart — and God — has called you to do.

You might recognize Kelsey Harkness from her weekly appearances on Fox News and Fox Business. Or maybe from her popular podcast, “Problematic Women” — or from the incredible documentaries she produces for The Daily Signal. “[I] want to point out that women’s empowerment and women’s voices are important and there are ways for us to unite…there is a need for women to speak up and say, nothing is more empowering than thinking independently.” — Kelsey Harkness Kelsey began her career in New York City, working for Fox News, but quickly decided she wanted to be more ingrained in the political scene and moved to Washington, DC to do just that. One of her first assignments was to cover the tumultuous battle going on about same-sex marriage and religious liberty at the Supreme Court. In today’s episode, we discuss Kelsey’s perspective on covering controversial issues during this very divisive, political time in history. We also talk about what it means to be an empowered woman and how conservatives can be feminists too. Kelsey isn’t shy about her ideas on what it means for women to think for themselves — or her opinions on the Women’s March and the #MeToo movement (not one in the same, btw!) You hear her passion and commitment in this interview — and you’ll walk away with a greater understanding of what draws people to journalism and politics, even when it’s a difficult time to do so. Kelly Clemente is one of the sweetest, most genuine people I’ve ever met — and her story is incredible. You don’t often hear from birth moms, the women who put their babies up for adoption after an unexpected pregnancy. Today, you’ll hear from one. Kelly became pregnant at 18 and knew she wasn’t ready to be a mother or provide her son with what he needed. In the podcast episode, we talk about the tough decisions Kelly had to make, pressure she faced while pregnant, and the beautiful story she has of giving birth to her son, Alex and maintaining a thriving relationship with he and his adoptive family. Kelly talks about what it was like to choose a mother for her son, and you hear how that choice came full circle for her 10 years later. We also talk about Kelly’s latest venture, Chaste After, a ministry she’s creating to promote abstinence and more. Kelly’s rock solid faith is very apparent in our interview and her compassion for women in facing unexpected pregnancy is palpable. I was moved and inspired by her story — and I know you will be too. Britney Cooper is my hair stylist, but I’m glad to say she’s also my friend. As I was sitting her chair one day, I felt compelled to let her know what a bada** chick I thought she was. She’s an entrepreneur with two adorable little girls that she is raising as a single mom and absolutely killing it in life and business. “You can either claw your way out of this uncomfortable place…or you can literally sit down in it and get yourself comfortable in the cold and dirt and darkness — and learn every single thing you can while you are in the pit and know that when you get the opportunity to walk out, that you are walking out of it with gold in your hands.” After I told her how inspiring I thought she was, she went ahead and spit out some mad wisdom about how she stays positive and keeps going, even in the face of loss, grief and hardship. I knew, in that second, I needed to get her on the podcast. In this episode, we talk about Britney’s life and some of the hard things she’s gone through — like divorce and losing her sister to a tragic car accident two years ago. I could have spoken with her for hours — and think we’ll definitely need a Britney Part 2 at some point. You will walk about inspired and rejuvenated — it’s most definitely worth your time. For the first episode of “Worth Your Time,” I speak with my sister, Lindsey Hein — host of the “I’ll Have Another” podcast. We talk about all things podcasting, motherhood, entrepreneurship and a few non-traditional philosophies Lindsey has about life. “I don’t believe in mom guilt.” — Lindsey Hein, entrepreneur mother of 4 boys ages 6 and under This episode will be especially notable to those interested in the podcasting world — but also for moms trying to live their dreams and balance those out with babies, husbands, social lives and a little trash TV watching too. It’s important that your kids don’t define your entire identity — and that you put one foot in front of the other when it comes to accomplishing what’s on your heart. In the chaos of toddlerhood and the sweetness of mothering, we are still women with a lot of soul and passion. Not everyone chooses to live out more professional goals when their kids are small — and that’s okay — but Lindsey is doing that and it’s incredibly fulfilling for her. With a supportive husband and a lot of hustle, she’s living the life she created and is dreaming big for what’s to come — as a mom and an entrepreneur with a podcast that’s actually making her a living.
Here are a few of the things we mentioned in the episode:
