A who’s who of GAA, racing, sports and TV stars were in Carlow’s county grounds as Paudie Clifford, Rachael Blackmore, Ursula Jacob, Paul McGrath, Miriam O’Callaghan, Michael Duignan and Barry Geraghty featured among those lending a hand as selectors, commentators, side-line officials, umpires and maor uisce. Cyrill Farrell and former All-Ireland referee Dickie Murphy were the men in charge, though some would say they forgot to bring out the whistles.

Sunday sees two of Kilkenny’s most successful clubs go head-to-head once more in the Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship final as Ballyhale Shamrocks take on James Stephens.
The Shamrocks are going in search of their fifth consecutive title with their old rivals standing in their way of a record-equalling 20th county championship.
James Stephens have turned their early season form around with victories over Lisdowney, Bennettsbridge and Dicksboro meaning they are one victory away from lifting the Tom Walsh Cup for the first time since 2011.

It is a big weekend in the JJ Kavanagh and Sons Carlow Senior Hurling Championship as the semi-finals take place in Netwatch Cullen Park.
First up at 2.15pm, county champions Mount Leinster Rangers will be firm favourites to advance to yet another decider when they take on Bagenalstown Gaels in the day’s opener.
The second semi-final pits Ballinkillen against St Mullins at 4pm in Carlow town.
2020 finalists Ballinkillen were victorious when the teams met in the league campaign but the 2021 runners up St Mullins will have hopes of righting that wrong.

Goffs Thyestes Day is in the rearview mirror for 2021 as the race that stops a county went ahead behind closed doors for the first time in a long time.
While the atmosphere in the air was subdued, the action on the Gowran Park track proved exciting, in particular for trainers Mouse Morris and Gordon Elliot, the latter seeing a 1-2 finishing in the feature Goffs Thyestes Chase.
