Ross County Sheriff George Lavender and Chief Deputy T.J. Hollis talk about the successful D.A.R.E. golf outing which raised $5,000 for the program, celebrating graduations responsibly and staying safe on the roadways for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. A deputy was injured over the weekend inside the jail, but Hollis says the assailant was subdued and the deputy is recovering. They also seized drugs before they reached the Law Enforcement Complex this weekend. Hollis says the in house drug dog has made a definite impact at the LEC.

Local Minister Dave Magill and Chillicothe Police Detective Bud Lytle have combined efforts for a revival on the Ross County Court House steps, June 19-24. There will be resources available for those fighting substance abuse and other addictions. Lytle says combining the civil service and faith communities can only be a positive for the continuing fight and healing. Magill says there will be special singing and speakers nightly at 6:30pm and Saturday's activities begin at 12pm lasting into the evening hours.
Chillicothe Correctional Institution & Southern Ohio Survivors partner for the CCI-SOS Walk-A-Thon. The event begins with a cancer awareness ceremony. Inmate Willie was one three who shared their story of cancer survival. Six years ago, Willie was diagnosed with prostate cancer, which later spread to his bones. He tells more of his story in this interview with iHeartMedia Chillicothe's Dan Ramey, who is a board member with SOS a local cancer survivor advocacy group. The Walk-A-Thon is a collaborative work between prison officials and the inmate Jaycee Chapter. The Chapter regularly makes a donation to SOS for their efforts. It's been more than 20 years, but rally cars have returned to Chillicothe. Brent Short and Jeremiah Johnson tell us what to expect with the Southern Ohio Forest Rally this weekend. Johnson says the cars are street legal so they can travel to the roadways to the designated courses, but once they're ready to race, they pack a punch. Some of the cars resemble those seen in the "Fast & Furious" movie series. The Rally will take to the course in Zaleski State Forest Friday and through Scioto Trails State Forest Saturday, culminating in side-by-side competition at the Ross County Fairgrounds, something not done here before. The only admission price is at the fairgrounds, $5 per person, but ages 12 and under are admitted free. There will be designated stations for spectator viewing in the State Forests, simply follow the signs. Captain Ron Meyers of the Chillicothe Police Department remembers the five CPD officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The first was Officer George Wall in 1891. Wall and the others are memorialized on a monument at the Law Enforcement Complex. Others include Officers Daniel Garrett (1926), Edwin Waldon (1928), Phillip Steinbrook (1979) and Larry Cox (2005). The board approved the purchase of the former Chillicothe Telephone building on Orange Street for its new location for the Transportation Department. The current property near Riverside Drive is being sold to the City of Chillicothe. Saxton also discussed some of the demonstrations performed by students for the school board from the STEAM program. Early site planning has begun for the construction of the elementary buildings. Saxton believes workers will begin turning dirt by Monday. The Athletic Committee also met to discuss replacing the scoreboards in Hatton Gymnasium, the softball and baseball fields and at The Obadiah Harris Athletic Complex. The latter is the same scoreboard repurposed from before renovation to the complex to fit the large video screen in 2013.

US Congressman Brad Wenstrup (R Ohio 2nd District) visited the studios following his trip to Asia. Wenstrup discusses health care, national security and other concerns. Wenstrup serves as the Chair of the VA Health Care Sub Committee and also on the Armed Services and Intelligence Committees. Wenstrup talks about visiting Japan and other points in Asia while North Korea was sabre rattling in the region. He also talks about the strain and struggles of working on a health care plan and tax reform, two areas President Trump wanted solved early in his term.
Ross County Health District Director Ben Avery and District Board Member Chad Walters state their case for the upcoming May 2nd election, looking for support of their Levy. Avery says the language for the levy can appear misleading. The ballot requests a 1 mill levy which is what the District has operated on since 1992. However, because the levy failed in November, the wording of "additional levy" has to be included to what voters will see at the ballot. Avery says "It's essentially the same millage we've (voters) have been paying for years and years, just at today's accessed tax value." For a $100,000 home owner, that could be less than a bottle of water costs each month. Walters says the momentum of the current business climate runs the risk of slowing if the levy fails. Because the services of the Health District are state mandated, if the levy fails, the burden falls upon the City of Chillicothe and the townships of Ross County. Ross County Auditor Tom Spetnagel, Jr. says it could cost Chillicothe $250,000 to $300,000 that simply isn't in the city's budget.

Chillicothe High School Principal Dr. Jeffrey Fisher says as the Cavs get ready for their prom April 29th, the Teen Institute is staging a mock crash at the corner of Yoctangee Parkway and North Street. Fisher says the Chillicothe Police and Fire Departments will stage the crash with student actors all to address the issues of distracted driving with the hopes the students will have a safe prom. Fisher adds the intent is the message will be one to help the students in their decision making far beyond this Spring's prom.

Union-Scioto Schools Treasurer John Rose and Levy Campaign Co-chair Mark Anderson talk about the quarter percent, 30 year permanent improvement income tax levy facing voters May 2nd. The levy would replace the existing 45 year old 1,100 seat gymnasium with the multipurpose Sherman Community Center. Anderson says seating capacity would expand to 1,800 with potential for more seating. Rose says the proposal is in response to a community-wide survey. Rose says the district has created changes within its budget with the new facility in mind as part of permanent improvement. Rose notes the levy will handle more than the Community Center, including technology needs and ongoing maintenance needs. He says the existing half-mill building maintenance which will end in the 2022 and the 1.4 mill bond issue that paid for the 1999 improvements will also come to an end. The Chillicothe Gazette series The Overdose Dilemma has run in this weeks paper. Written by Enterprise Reporter Jona Ison, the articles feature some of the local people impacted by addiction. Those featured will participate in "Voices A Town Hall" Monday April 10th at the Ross County Service Center from 6pm-8pm. The forum is coordinated by the Heroin Partnership Project. Ison says the night will feature open discussion by those impacted by addiction with hopes those in attendance will find answers for healing and helping others impacted by the addiction.
A visit with Ross-Pike Education Service Center Special Education Supervisor Heidi Gray and Director Lori Lowe (pictured) talk about their service to the school districts in Ross and Pike Counties.Lowe says RPESC extends their services to the rural school districts in all aspects. Gray and Lowe say their services help districts that may not be able to staff personnel to assist students in need of special education. During the month of April, autism is their main focus. Ultramarathon Runner Dr. Reggie O'Hara will be in this weekend's 150 mile race, The Buck Fifty. The race features 38 teams of 10 persons each running the relay of 150 miles over a 24 hour period, beginning at 2:30pm Friday from OUC. O'Hara and his wife Keri, his co-pilot, will begin their trek a day earlier, Thursday.

Brad Catron's mission of sanitary water continues April 22nd with the Water-Can Walk at 9am in Yoctangee Park. The day brings awareness to the need for clean water in remote areas worldwide, specifically Kenya where Catron's Foothold International Missions has helped with water filtration. Catron and his wife Cherie founded the Chillicothe based Foothold International in 2012. Catron says 780-million people do not have access to clean water. In the Kenyan village Catron visits, villagers can walk 5-7 miles to get the water they need daily. 40 pounds of water, carried either atop their heads or on backs can be a day long process. Meanwhile, with the bio sand filtration units (which cost about $35) can clean that water in the time it takes to pour 5 gallons of water through the unit. From the courts of Logan, Ohio to becoming a Buckeye and playing on the world stage as an olympian, Katie Smith has been a lifelong ambassador for the game of basketball. Smith will be the keynote speaker for the Ohio State University Alumni Club of Ross County Thursday March 23rd at the Chillicothe Country Club. Smith is a three-time medalist with Team USA, a seven-time All-Star with the WNBA wining championships with the Detroit Shock and two ABL titles with the Columbus Quest. Smith is also the first female athlete to have her number retired by The Ohio State University. Debbie Bettendorf with Chillicothe High School's Keys to Success program (K2S) and Greg Phillips a CHS faculty member and point man for the Drug Free Clubs of America (DFCA) at the school. Keys to Success was a combined effort of CHS alumni Gary VonKennel, Bill Herrnstein and City Schools administrators. The program requirements for students include voluntary random drug testing, maintaining good grades and staying out of trouble with the law. The program was expanded to include all high school grades. In spring of 2017, a brand new Dodge Dart will be awarded to a student. More students have signed up to participate in the incentive program in its second year. The K2S and DFCA program combined this summer and Phillips says the membership has risen above 50% of the CHS student body. They share details on the Positivity, Behavior, Intervention & Support (PBIS) program at ZTMS. Flannagan says the program was introduced in the school system for two years. The directive is to help those in their early teens how to conduct themselves while unsupervised by adults. All three agree they've seen marked improvement among the student body.
