You have the CrossFit Games with it's 10 in-person qualifying events along with the in-affiliate Semifinals happening over 9 weeks. The World Fitness Project tour stop one is also smack dab in the middle of that. Then you have the CrossFit Games and the World Fitness Project Event 2 in August. Plus the Rogue Invitational, the World Fitness Project Finals and Wodapalooza between Halloween and the end of January.

That's a lot of CrossFit in 2025. It's also going to be a challenge for athletes to know when and how much to compete.

I take a look at the logistics and timelines of what some athletes could be looking at this season. From three competitions a year, to potentially three in a month.

For the 2025 CrossFit Games season, the top 1% of athletes from the CrossFit Open will be eligible to advance to the In-Affiliate Semifinals. 12 men and 12 women will advance from the In-Affiliate Semifinals to the CrossFit Games. Everyone in CrossFit, the athletes, the fans and the coaches want it to be the right 12 people.

What if instead of taking the top 1%, it's the top 1% who finish the workouts faster that a minimum qualifying time. We dive into that idea on this episode of the Fran Lung Show.

The details of the 2025 CrossFit Games are still a little slim, but we know a few things.

  1. There will be a minimum of 30 men and women competing at the 2025 CrossFit Games.
  2. There are 9 Sanctional events, who will qualify 16 men and women to the Games.

This implies that at least 14 athletes will qualify from the CrossFit Games from the new online Semifinal.

Based on this information, who would have qualified for the Games in 2024 with the 2025 rules in place?

The 2023 Madrid Championship and the Northern California Classic went off this weekend, with some familiar names on top of the podium Karin Freyova and Lazar Dukic won in Madrid, while Sean Sweeney and Brittany Weiss won in NorCal. Each of them took home a pretty substantial prize purse. Both Dukic and Freyova won more in Madrid than they did in the CrossFit Games, which is impressive considering both athletes finished in the top 15 at the CrossFit Games. Weiss earned as much at NorCal as she did as part of the Fittest Team on Earth, CrossFit Invictus. Sean Sweeney won more at NorCal than BKG did at the CrossFit Games.

We have thrown this idea around but when Dani Speegle  brought it up on a Kettlebells and Cocktails  podcast we decided we wanted to flush out what a Pro Card Status could look like.

Dave breaks down why we think it would be a good idea for the sport of CrossFit and the elite athletes at the beginning.  At about 3:45 he gets into the criteria that we would use and the athletes that would be on those lists.

A Lifetime, 3 Year, 2 Year and 1 Year Pro Athlete status in Crossfit would get an athlete a direct to Semifinals invite. This status could also be used for offseason competitions to remove the need for Pro athletes to do qualifiers and allow competition organizers some lists to choose from when selecting athletes to invite to their compeitions.

Looking ahead to the weekend of August 26th, we have The Iron Games.  A couple notable athletes to watch are Kloie Wilson and Logan Ewing.

In other Off-Season competition news, the Madrid Championship released their elite confirmed athletes.  Favorites for the men’s title are Lazar Dukic, Jonne Koski, Travis Mayer, while on the women’s side the battle for the top spot will be between Jacqueline Dahlstron and Anikha Greer.

The Dubai Fitness Championship confirmed they have sent invites out this year to 30 men and 30 women.

The 2023 CrossFit Games are complete. The Fittest Man and Women on earth have been crowned. After watching the Fittest on Earth be crowned, we had 5 interesting points to highlight from the Men’s field at the 2023 CrossFit Games.

  1. What separates the best CrossFitters from the rest? One area of the CrossFit Venn diagram (Gymnastics, Weightlifting, Monostructural) stood out as the differentiators of the top 10 male athletes at the Games
  2. Want to win the CrossFit Games, then you need to have flawless execution. Jeffrey Adler in 2023, Roman Khrennikov in 2023 and 2022, Justin Medeiros in 2022 and 2021 were all incredibly hard to beat.
  3. CrossFit Training Camps were a hot topic with the rise of PRVN, HWPO, CrossFit Mayhem, and Brute Strength among others. But did it help you make the top 10 of the CrossFit Games
  4. The Career CrossFit athlete is here. The sport of fitness has matured to the point where athletes can have a long career. With Jeffrey Adler reaching the podium for the first time at 29, Patrick Vellner on the podium at 33, and Jelle Hoste being a rookie at 28, there is lots of opportunity to excel in CrossFit. It also gives rising stars like Dallin Pepper an opportunity to be in the top 10 for the next 10 years.
  5. No flash. While we saw lots of outstanding performances, Justin Medeiros, Sam Kwant, Jayson Hopper and Cole Sager lacked the flash we expected.

Dave and Katharine did not look at the CrossFit Athlete Rankings until they hit record on this episode. Starts as a bit of a slow roll but at the end there are some pretty big surprises of how athletes ended up ranked.

We were looking at the rankings https://games.crossfit.com/article/2023-crossfit-games-season-worldwide-rankings as well as our athlete data at franlung.com

CrossFit dropped the algorithm on how athlete rankings will be calculated so we did what we do and calculated out the athlete rankings as best as we could.  There are some assumptions in our data based on the lack of a worldwide quarterfinal leaderboard for 2021 but it still showed the trends by continent and gave us a platform that we could play through some scenarios.

CrossFit has since dropped their calculations applied to 2022 Quarterfinal athletes so this was recorded before hand but our thoughts don't change but some of the numbers will be a bit adjusted.

Laura Horvath is on of the top CrossFit athletes in the world.  She has been on the podium the last two years at the CrossFit Games, and has won multiple competitions the past two season.

That said, she finds her self consistently in the bottom of the standings of Handstand Push Up events.

We take a look at 7 events from the past few seasons, and see what the impact to her final spot on the leaderboard is had she had a better performance in the event.  The result, probably isn't what you would expect.
