Since last winter, vaccines have become the backbone of most of the developed countries fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. After a record-breaking development by a handful of companies backed by governments and it’s approval by regulators, the administration has paced up rapidly and by the second half of this year, most of Europeans and North-Americans are expected to be vaccinated.
However, most of the developing countries are still waiting for significant amounts of doses, leading the United States to propose waving patent rights for Covid vaccines in order to ease its production. George Chondrakis, associate professor of strategic management at Esade Business School, discusses with Carlos Serrano, associate professor of economics and business at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, on intellectual property rights and its role in boosting vaccines supply around the world.

By leaving the Paris agreement, the Trump administration dealt a huge blow to multilateral cooperation in the fight against climate change. Other actors took the lead, but our collective efforts are still falling well short. For all the pain it has brought, 2020 may have actually helped to reverse this trend: the Covid-19 pandemic has made us more aware of our inextricable dependence on our environment, and President-elect Joe Biden promised to get the US back into the Paris agreement as soon as he takes office. This commitment brings new hope, but how feasible is it to reduce emissions fast enough to avoid the worst consequences of climate change? Óscar Fernández and Marie Vandendriessche, senior researchers at EsadeGeo, discuss the most recent developments in climate change policy and diplomacy, and the opportunity Covid-19 relief funds offer to kick-start a “green recovery”.

Los buenos resultados preliminares de algunos ensayos de vacunas para la covid permiten vislumbrar, por primera vez en 2020, un horizonte para la política pública contra el virus. To achieve the SDGs we need to innovate, we need to do it at scale, and we need to do it fast, for the most vulnerable people, including refugees. To get there our organisations - big and small - will need to be collaborative, adaptable, but also rapidly radically open to cultural change. Using tech, using partnerships sometimes help with the how. We increasingly need to focus on diversity to make innovation more accessible, more sustainable, and more effective for those who need it.
What have we learned in 20 years about digital solutions? What do we need to develop to use them without losing the human factor? In order to facilitate vulnerable families an easy and bespoke access to essential services they need to find their own way out of poverty, at scale.
Living in a wealthy country does not mean that every person can live their best life. Whether you live in Barcelona or Bangladesh, the SDGs are for everyone. Social innovation is for everyone too. Interconnected and systemic challenges need solutions to match. So why does the social innovation community rarely use SDGs as a frame to drive discussion and action? How can we make sure the lessons and the experiences of the social innovation community benefit people outside of our own echo chamber? Louise will explore how foundations, businesses, universities, NGOs, and civil society organisations can all play a more systemic role in contributing to tackling the SDGs, and helping more people to live their best lives.
With the shifting of power and an increase access to resources, how can we as individuals and as collectives, as those under represented and as communities, leverage our ever growing extent of the most advance exponential technology, to change our mindset, our behaviors, our actions and our contributions for a better self and a better future?
