NY Giants 2020 Draft
The Giants took OT Andrew Thomas with the No. 4 overall pick. A pro-ready tackle who played mostly on the left side at Georgia. Someone to protect Daniel Jones' blindside for years to come.
Dave Gettleman said the Giants spent a lot of time on this. "We want to fix this offensive line once and for all!" Thomas is a step in the right direction.
The Giants became just the fourth team in the common draft era to select an offensive player with a top six pick in three consecutive drafts. Their offense needs to carry the team this season. They ranked 23rd in total offense last year.
The Giants first selection on day 2 was..
Alabama safety Xavier McKinney, who said the 4.63 at the combine was a "fake time” because of “Cramps”. He ran a 4.52 in training. Thought he would show that at Pro Day. The Giants also believe his playing speed is much faster than 4.53.
Mel Kiper Jr. had him as his 15th-ranked prospect. Productive and versatile safety. Only dropped into the second round because of the bad 40..
They like McKinney's versatility and believe he can play all over the field. McKinney classified himself as a DB, which means he can do it all. "Safety, FS, CB, slot, nickel. Anywhere! So I'm a versatile DB."
The Giants took Matt Peart (UConn) with the 99th overall pick. Picking for value at this point. Developmental tackle with talent, athleticism and size. Has great length. His 36 5/8-inch arms were the longest of all O-linemen at the combine.
The Giants took CB Darnay Holmes (UCLA) with the 110th overall pick near the top of the fourth round. He had eight career interceptions in three years. Aggressive but undersized man-coverage corner.
The Giants selected guard Shane Lemieux from Oregon with their fifth-round pick (No. 150 overall). He was a second-team All-American. Adds depth at the position.
The Giants grabbed LB Cam Brown with their sixth-round pick (No. 183 overall). The Penn State product has length and range at 6-5, 233 pounds. He had 15 tackles for a loss and 5.0 sacks in four seasons.
The Giants chose Minnesota LB Carter Coughlin in the seventh round (No. 218) of the draft. He had 22.5 sacks in four seasons. No relation to Tom Coughlin, ex-Giants coach.
The Giants selected South Carolina LB T.J. Brunson in the seventh round (No. 238) of the draft. Smallish linebacker who had six sacks in four seasons.
The Giants picked Minnesota CB Chris Williamson in the seventh round (No. 247) of the draft. He started just 10 games in four years. A nickel CB.
Mr. Irrelevant: Tae Crowder, LB, Georgia. He was taken with the final pick of the 2020 NFL draft, No. 255 overall.
The Giants have a major decision to make in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. Do they take their favorite offensive tackle to assure the protection of young QB Daniel Jones or do they pick versatile defensive playmaker Isaiah Simmons? Also, which players make sense as options for the G-Men to draft in the later rounds and how they could help out the team moving forward.
The debate inside the Giants over Clemson’s Isaiah Simmons — worthy of the No. 4 pick? — could be one of the most hotly contested in years. Simmons played 100 or more snaps at five different defensive positions in 2019.
But sources in rival organizations believe the Giants front office still is of the mindset that “position-less players” are too difficult to maximize when a stud is needed at No. 4.
Even with the possibility that Ohio State’s Jeff Okudah will be available at No. 4, the Giants understand the need to add a veteran. There is optimism that things clicked for DeAndre Baker — one of three first-round picks in 2019 — late in his rookie season. Other teams are not sure he has NFL cornerback speed.
The Giants’ pitch to free agent Byron Jones could include offensive coordinator Jason Garrett, Jones’ head coach with the Cowboys for the last five seasons. James Bradberry (Panthers) is another coveted option.
Great debate still rages on Giants quarterback Daniel Jones’ future.
Some insiders believe he was “just OK” as a rookie, with an 87.7 rating, 3,024 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a league-high 18 fumbles.
One team with a multiple-time Pro Bowl quarterback in his prime included Jones on its draft board last April because of the thought he might quickly grow to beat out the starter. The same team remains very high on Jones.
The Giants privately remain fully committed to Jones despite the way Judge and Dave Gettleman dodged questions. The belief is his fumbling problem is easily correctable and the quiet way he handled adversity — a nine-game losing streak, turnovers, the awkward dynamic with Eli Manning — was perfect for a pressure cooker.
Although the Giants have full confidence in Daniel Jones, he is not a one-man band. He needs a backup, and Alex Tanney remains in the running.
Tanney was under contract for 2020 and, not surprisingly, the Giants picked up his option for this season, The Post confirmed. Tanney will make $950,000 and count $1 million on the salary cap, if he makes the team. He signed a two-year deal worth $1.87 million before the 2019 season.
Expect the Giants to prioritize cornerback in free agency one year after mistakenly failing to do so, sources said.
Unrestricted in-house free agents
Leonard Williams, defensive lineman
Markus Golden, outside linebacker/defensive end
Mike Remmers, offensive tackle
David Mayo, inside linebacker
Michael Thomas, safety
Cody Latimer, wide receiver
Cody Core, wide receiver
Corey Coleman, wide receiver
Antonio Hamilton, defensive back
The key name for the Giants among their unrestricted free agents is Williams. After sending their 2020 third-round draft pick -- a top 70 pick overall -- in an already lost season -- for a contract-year defensive lineman -- all eyes will be on the next step for New York. Will Gettleman re-sign Williams to a long-term contract as one of the highest-paid defensive linemen in the NFL? Will the Giants assign Williams the transition tag (or franchise tag) and make him prove it in a new defensive system? Will they let him walk for nothing in free agency? We expect them to re-sign him long term, but the most prudent option would be to assign Williams the transition tag for the 2020 season.
Free agent Markus Golden lost his greatest ally when Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher was fired. They previously worked together with the Cardinals.
A source described how Bettcher “stood on a table” to convince Gettleman to look past injury history and two correlated unproductive seasons to sign Golden to a one-year, $4.75 million (bonus included) deal.
Golden (10 sacks) is expected to test the market. Bettcher is out of the NFL for now.
Patrick Mahomes in 2018. Lamar Jackson in 2019. Daniel Jones in 2020?
It is the era of the second-year quarterback. The last two league MVPs, Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes and Baltimore's Lamar Jackson, won the award in their sophomore campaigns. Mahomes, the 10th overall pick in 2017, sat for a year before breaking out in 2018. Lamar Jackson, the final pick in the first round in 2018, started the final seven games of his rookie year before he dominated the league this past season.
Could Daniel Jones, the sixth overall pick in 2019, be the next in line?
Who will the GMen take with the 4th pick on the draft.. experts say..
Mel Kiper Jr. (ESPN) picked Clemson OLB Isaiah Simmons: "An off-ball linebacker in the top five? Believe it -- Simmons is that good. He is the perfect run-and-cover linebacker for today's NFL, and he can do anything and play every down. Just look at his incredible stat line from 2019: 104 tackles, eight sacks, three interceptions and 16 total tackles for loss. The Giants have many needs, but Simmons is the type of defender who makes everyone around him better."
Jason McIntyre (FOX Sports) projected Ohio State CB Jeff Okudah: "It pains me as a Jets fan to say it, but the Giants are building something pretty impressive. They'll have two young corners, the makings of a good defensive line, and lots of skill position talent."
Joe Judge was very deliberate in the process and left no stone unturned, brought together nine coaches who arrived from other NFL teams, five who spent the 2019 season coaching collegiate football, and six who were with the Giants last year. The list includes former head coaches at every level.
Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett (Cowboys) and tight ends coach Freddie Kitchens (Browns) led NFL teams. Senior offensive assistant Derek Dooley (Tennessee, Louisiana Tech) and outside linebackers coach/senior assistant Bret Bielema (Wisconsin, Arkansas) have guided major college programs. Quarterbacks coach Jerry Schuplinski served as the head coach at Trinity High School in Ohio, and 10 years later, he was in the quarterbacks room with Tom Brady. Head coach was not a prerequisite to get a job on Judge's staff, but "that ended up being a plus."
Joe Judge’s coaching staff is just about done being built after the hiring of Freddie Kitchens as the new tight ends coach. We discuss our thoughts on how the staff will work out this upcoming season as well as a preview of Super Bowl LIV and what we expect from the big game.
Eli Manning, a two-time Super Bowl winner and most valuable player, will announce his retirement Friday, ending a 16-year career spent entirely with the team he joined in a draft-day trade in 2004.
Manning is one of the most accomplished players in the 95 seasons of Giants football. He is the only player in franchise history to suit up for 16 seasons and his 236 regular-season games (234 starts) and 248 total games are both Giants records.
From Nov. 21, 2004 through Nov. 23, 2017, Manning started 210 consecutive regular-season games, then the second-longest streak by a quarterback in NFL history (to Brett Favre's 297). After sitting out one game, he started the next 22 in a row, giving him 232 starts in 233 games – plus 12 postseason games. Manning never missed a game because of injury.
Manning led the Giants to victories against the New England Patriots in Super Bowls XLII (when they defeated a Patriots team that was 18-0) and XLVI. In each game, he led the Giants on a long fourth-quarter drive to erase a fourth-quarter deficit. On Feb. 3, 2008, it was a 12-play, 83-yard march highlighted by Dave Tyree's famous helmet catch and the 13-yard touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress with 35 seconds remaining that gave the Giants a 17-14 victory.
Four years later, the decisive series covered 88 yards in nine plays, most memorably a 38-yard sideline throw to Mario Manningham and Ahmad Bradshaw's seat-of-his-pants one-yard touchdown run for a 21-17 triumph.
Manning won the Rozelle Trophy as the game's most valuable player each time. He is the only Giants player to win the award twice and is one of just five players in NFL history to win multiple Super Bowl MVP awards. All of them are quarterbacks (Tom Brady, 4; Joe Montana, 3; Terry Bradshaw and Bart Starr, 2 apiece).
Manning is one of 21 quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl without losing one and one of 12 to win at least two Super Bowls.
Manning owns every significant Giants career passing record. He is sixth in NFL history with 8,119 attempts and seventh with 4,895 completions, 57,023 yards and 366 touchdown passes. Manning also has the franchise's highest career completion percentage (60.29). Manning holds the seven highest single-season completion totals and the four highest yardage totals (he threw for more than 4,000 yards seven times) and completion percentages. He was selected to four Pro Bowls.
Manning also excelled in the postseason, when he had an 8-4 record. He set Giants career playoff records with 400 passes, 242 completions, 2,815 yards and 18 touchdown passes.
Manning threw for 283 yards and two touchdowns in a 36-20 victory over the Dolphins and left the game to a long and loud ovation with 1:54 remaining. The victory evened his regular-season record at 117-117.
There is a lot to like about Jason Garrett being hired as the Giants OC. There are also reasons to be concerned.
Pros:
— Experience
— Asset to rookie HC
— Developed young QBs
— Has success as OC
Cons:
— Hasn’t called plays since 2012
— Too conservative
— Could leave next year for Head coach job, which could mean a third OC (and possibly system) in 3 years for Daniel Jones.
Marc Colombo will interview for the Giants OL opening this week, sources tell @toddarcher. Jason Garrett’s presence as offensive coordinator would seem to make this a natural connection. Cowboys pass protection greatly improved in 2019 and still had 5th-ranked run offense.
The Giants have hired former Falcons defensive passing game coordinator Jerome Henderson as their defensive backs coach, per source. Joe Judge’s staff is coming together.
Bret Bielema is expected to join the Giants staff, per source. Former Wisconsin and Arkansas coach has been with the Patriots for the past two years
@JordanRaanan My understanding on Freddie Kitchens is that, while it may happen, at this time nothing is finalized with him joining the Giants and Joe Judge’s staff.
Anthony Blevins, who spent past 2 seasons as Giants asst STs coach, is expected to return in still to be determined role, per source. Blevins is well regarded by players. Has also coached DBs and has connection to Joe Judge. They were graduate assistants together at Miss St.
Super Bowl LIV is slated for Feb. 2 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Patrick Mahomes (35) and Jimmy Garoppolo (28) have combined for 63 career starts (regular & postseason combined) -- that will be the fewest career starts entering a Super Bowl matchup by the starting QBs.
The Chiefs kicked off the season as the consensus favorites to win the Super Bowl, overcame a midseason knee injury to quarterback Patrick Mahomes and mounted consecutive playoff comebacks in wins over the Houston Texans and Tennessee Titans to reach the franchise's first Super Bowl since the 1969 season.
The 49ers were considered middle-of-the-pack contenders to start the season, with 40-1 Super Bowl odds at Caesars Sportsbook. They secured their spot in Miami with a 37-20 win over the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game. The favored team has won 34 of 53 Super Bowls. However, favorites of three points or less are 8-7.
