When the dancers of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater came back to the studio in September 2020 after the Covid-19 shutdown, everyone knew there was a lot of work to be done to get the dancers back into performance shape. In the year leading up to their first in-person season since the start of the pandemic, the dancers engaged in various forms of cross-training curated by artistic staff, the physical therapy department and others in the Ailey community. In the fall of 2021, there was one more big push to get the dancers ready for stage. Listen as Mr. Matthew Rushing, Dr. Sheyi Ojofeitimi, Dr. Marissa Schaeffer, Andrew Schaeffer and Antoine Simmons detail that final push and discuss the logistics, challenges and triumphs of packing cross-training into a busy season.

During the pandemic, Registered Dietitian Kristin Koskinen has found that many dancers are interested in learning how they can help combat some of the stress and anxiety in our current world climate with the foods or eating behaviors they choose. In this episode, Kristin explains some of the ways that food influences our mood, and how these affects may vary depending on an individual’s preferences, genetics, or past experiences. We caution again obsessive thinking surrounding food and mood, and we discuss a fan favorite topic: what should you eat before a show?

All people experience a range of emotions in life, including dancers. However, training and professional practice often ask dancers to be hardworking, perseverant, and positive—sometimes even demanding that they smile no matter how they feel. As Kate Wilson LICSW and Miriam Rowan PsyD explain, dancers can become emotionally disoriented when they don’t acknowledge their true feelings. Our guests explain the risks that come from repressing difficult feelings, and they offer insights on how to reconnect to your emotional compass.

Historically, screenings were a method of gate keeping, and in many places today, they still are. Early selection for flexibility and certain proportions were used to determine who could dance at the Kirov and who could not, for example. In this already exclusive field, how many potentially great careers were dismissed too early on in a screening process? How many creative, innovations of dusty traditions were discouraged? In addition to thinking about who gets to wear pointe shoes, our guest, Jacqui Greene Haas, also touches on who constitutes a “Dance Educator”, and of course, the missing data in screenings, the importance of lower leg strength and a lot more that you may or may not expect!!

In January 2021, Mirriam-Webster Dictionary added a handful of new words to its pages. Among them was the new definition for the word 'bubble.' Thanks to the pandemic, a bubble can be 'an area within which sports teams stay isolated from the general public... so as to prevent exposure to disease and that includes accommodations, amenities, and the location at which the games are held'.

Bubbles, and the generous foundations and donors who support them, have been partially responsible for keeping dance companies creating and dancing. Logistically, there's a lot that goes into forming a bubble and to keeping it air-tight. On this episode of DanceWell Podcast, we invited Alison Deleget, MS, ATC and Will Zinser, MS, ATC of NYU Langone's Harkness Center for Dance Injuries to tell us all about what it takes to form a successful bubble.

Senior career counselor Patch Schwadron says that, prior to covid, dancers used to come in to her office at the Career Center at the Actors Fund only after getting the idea in their head that it was time to move on from dance. Now though, the pandemic has given her a chance to change that paradigm. She wants dancers to come in at all stages of their career, not to think about moving on, but instead to think about how they can expand their function within the art form.

Get in touch with Patch at: pschwadron@actorsfund.org

Dancers interested in taking advantage of The Career Center programs should start by registering for and attending a Career Center Orientation, offered on Mondays https://actorsfund.org/workshops/career-center-orientation-et and Thursdays: https://actorsfund.org/workshops/career-center-orientation-pt-1. Also available to dancers is a bi-monthly National Dancer Info Session: https://actorsfund.org/workshops/national-dancer-info-session

Dancers can access The Dancers’ Resource Center at The Actors Fund, led by social worker and former performer Mario Ismael Espinoza (they, them, theirs), mespinoza@actorsfund.org , who helps dancers navigate the range of health, financial, and housing challenges they are facing at this time.

Also, New York area dancers should know about Dr. Joey Fernandez (he. him, his), joey.fernancez@mtsinai.org , who has recently joined The Friedman Health Center, located in mid-town Manhattan. Before going into medicine, Dr. Fernandez studied music and dance, and has since developed his specialty in sports and performing arts medicine.

More information about the range of programs and service can be found on The Actors Fund website, www.actorsfund.org

Effective attention and focus are known components of a successful artistic performance. As audience members, we know how powerful it can be to see a dancer who is supremely focused in the present moment. And as dancers, we know that an inability to maintain our attention on the task at hand can result in poor performance or even yield disastrous outcomes. In Episode 77: Attention and Focus, Clare Guss-West explains more about this important topic. She shares a bit of the existing research on attentional focus and explains the many ways in which certain attentional strategies enhance performance as well as offering practical ideas for improving attentional focus.

As the world shut down in the wake of COVD-19, the performing arts world changed. Shows were cancelled, rehearsals suspended and training took on a different form. Many began dancing - and even rehearsing - indoors. Hallways became dance floors, mantle pieces became ballet barres, and somehow we kept going. Due to space constraints, hard floors and a multitude of other factors, many were unable to train as vigorously as they had pre-pandemic. Now as dance studios, schools and companies begin to open their doors once more, we need to prepare our bodies for the challenges dance presents us. Join us in this episode as athletic trainer and strength and conditioning specialist Will Zinser talks about how to prepare to return to the studio.

Finding the right pointe shoe is a dynamic process that depends on a number of factors. Former dancer, Dr. Jason Lam, is the Crichton Dance Medicine Fellow at The Australian Ballet, where a top-notch medical team develops, researches, and promotes the non-surgical care of dance injuries. It’s been shown in a smattering of conditions that healthy individuals have access to a greater variety of movement patterns and have superior control of their bodies. As conditioning specialists and health care professionals it should therefore be our duty to coach movement variety. Yet when it comes down to it, we often find ourselves looking for movement that is just so. Is it possible that in our quest for wellness and ‘good’ movement we over-coach movement patterns and limit our pupil’s variety? In doing so, do we run the risk of instilling a fear of moving ‘poorly’? Join us on episode 57 as physical therapist Daan van den Akker discusses ‘good’ versus ‘bad’ movement and the importance of movement choices.

Janine Cappello-Bryant's PhD has focused on the aging process and how it affects dancers' spinal range of motion. In many dance forms, physical contact is considered an essential part of the experience and consent to touch is often assumed rather than explicitly given. However, consent is nuanced and without an open dialogue, dancers risk getting involved in more than feels comfortable or safe. But unfortunately, an open dialogue often isn’t part of dance classes, rehearsals, or auditions. While teaching a partnering class in the midst of the MeToo movement, Sarah Wilcoxon and Brittney Banaei set out to explore and challenge these dance norms. The result? We’ve all used fitness trackers like Fitbits, iPhone step counters, and Nike Fuel bands to count our steps and to get a general idea of our overall activity for the day. Maybe we’ve even used this type of wearable to track our sleep cycles so we can gleam whether or not we are well-rested. But at the end of the day, how are these tidbits of information really impacting our health and wellness? And more specifically, how can they help dancers?

Tune in to this episode of DanceWell Podcast to hear to Dr. Phillip Bauman MD, FAAOS and Mr. Doug Jamison of Hale.Life and Michelle Fleet and Dr. Madelyn Ho MD of Paul Taylor Dance Company discuss a study that is taking fitness tracking - using the Whoop wearable device - to a whole new level.

Aerial techniques, from trapeze to silks, were once relegated to circus acts but are becoming more mainstream in dance. As Emily Scherb, DPT, explains in this episode, a ballet dancer might be asked to take flight to fulfill a piece in the company's repertoire, or a freelancer might train in aerial arts to expand and diversify their skill set. However, moving off the ground involves unique mechanics and requires exceptional strength, particularly in the upper extremity. Dr. Scherb describes how dancers can prepare themselves for this exciting genre as well as what healthcare providers should consider when treating aerial artists.
