We see a common theme when it comes to the Paul’s epistles is that when he is writing his letters he gives doctrine and practical application. In chapters 1-3 of Ephesians we get the doctrinal part and in chapters 4-6 we get the practical application. Doctrinal means teaching or theology. This is theological teachings of the church. The technical terms are called orthodoxy (right understanding) and orthopraxy (right behavior or conduct). My conduct or my practice is informed by my belief. I am going to do what I know. My theology informs my conduct or behavior.

Intertestamental Period Part 2- A part of the Forerunner series.

Now that we have discussed the comparison between the First and Second Temple Judaism eras, we will turn our attention to the literature of Second Temple Judaism era. Most Christians are surprised to learn that the literature (that informed Jews in the times of Jesus and His Apostles) can be found today in many more sources besides the (Protestant) New Testament Scriptures.

This teaching is a Summary of the Intertestamental Period.

This allowed us to understand that what we know as the dark ages or silent years wasn't so silent. It was very active and eventful during this period. But it was a dark moment for the people of Israel. God’s people who were supposed to influence the world with the teachings of God were now being influenced by the world. We see this pattern constantly in their history and we see the same pattern for the church. This is why learning about the intertestamental period and the history of the Jews so we can understand their thought and pattern. Oddly enough looking at how religion of Christianity have infiltrated the church, we are repeating the same mistakes of Israel.

  • Learn more about the “Intertestamental” period

Many of used to think that the Old testament was not of importance and had no relevance but we are coming into understand that it is so important. We believe that since we are the church and we only need the Old Testament and that is erroneous. You can never understand the New Testament unless you look at and consider the progression, pattern, and unity of the Old Testament scripture. We have to get to a point where we are able to connect things in an appropriate way.

  • Learn the definition of Christology
  • Learn more about how the Church formed Christological doctrine from the patristic to reformation to modern periods of Church history (from 200-1790 AD)
  • Become more familiar with the background to the New Testament

Christology is the systematic doctrine or teaching concerning the Person of Jesus Christ. There are several sub-topics that fall under this branch of theology (i.e. pre-existence, eternality, OT prophecies, incarnation, divinity, humanity, death, resurrection, etc.). Almost from the beginning of the Church-age, a fierce debate began about the Person of Jesus Christ. In fact, the person of Jesus Christ is an essential element of what we (Church) believe to be the gospel of Jesus Christ. Scripture itself confirms this position through the writings of both the Pauline and general epistles.

The Chapter Analysis Method of Bible study picks up where the Book Survey Method of Biblestudy leaves off. You now have a reasonable grasp of the overall picture of the book, what it means, why it was written, etc. and you are now able to begin to examine the individual items making up the book. The best way of subdividing a book of the Bible is to use the chapter divisions, since these are generally accurate, and to study each chapter in detail. You will examine each paragraph, sentence, and word in a detailed and systematic manner.

The Chapter Analysis Method of Bible study is the second of three methods of Bible study that, together, will give you an extremely comprehensive view of each book of the Bible. These three methods will require the greatest effort on your part but will ultimately yield the best results. Each of the three emphasizes a different aspect of one overall process of study:

Survey (Method 9 - Book Survey Method) - obtain a detailed overview of a particular book of the Bible.

Analysis (Method 10 - Chapter Analysis Method) - study each chapter of the book in great detail.

Synthesis (Method 11 - Book Synthesis Method) - take what you learned in the previous two study stages and put it all back together, drawing conclusions as you go and gaining an appreciation of the whole of the book.

Lesson Objectives – At the end of this lesson, students will: * Learn about the Book Background Method of Bible study * Get “hands-on” practice on how to do a Book Background Method study

The Book Background Method of Bible Study involves gaining a better understanding of the biblical message by researching the background related to the passage, person, event, or topic being studied. This involves understanding the geography, historical events, culture, and political environment at the time a particular part of the Bible was written.

For people to gain a better sense of a passage in the Bible, they must know the biblical background of the time. The reason being is because since times had changed drastically from when these passages were written and it is harder for the reader to understand the importance of the history spoken if they do not have knowledge of the culture of the time.

Lesson Objectives – At the end of this lesson, students will: * Learn about the Book Background Method of Bible study * Get “hands-on” practice on how to do a Book Background Method study

Some of the Bible study methods we have discussed in this class may be used as students become more comfortable and fluent in their usage of them. Then there are some methods we will discuss that are really not optional. The Book Background Method is one of those non-negotiable strategies to Bible study. There should be not be any attempt to interpret the bible without doing a book background approach as part of the preliminary steps of studying the bible. Don’t attempt to think you know what the passage mean if you have not done a book background to some extent. You must understand background information.

A common mistake made by Bible students is to attempt to interpret and even apply biblical principles apart from their historical background context.

Lesson Objectives – At the end of this lesson, students will:

  • Learn about the Word Study Method of Bible study
  • Get “hands-on” practice on how to do a Word Study Method study

What does studying the original words of scripture do for us? Studying the original words of scripture is a step towards knowing the mind of God. Why do we need to move closer? To get to the truth to transform your life. Getting to the mind of God allow us to gain more power. It becomes potent. We need the right tools to get to the mind of God.

Some may say I don’t come to church for all this! And that is why many of us are in bondage because we have not submitted to His process and accepting the fact that it takes work.

The Word Study Method of Bible Study takes a microscopic look at the origin, definition, occurrences, and uses of a particular word, especially as it relates to the context of a passage of Scripture. The purpose is to learn as precisely and comprehensively as possible what the biblical writer meant by the word he used.

Lesson Objectives – At the end of this lesson, students will: * Be able to discuss the elements in the definition of “interpretation” * Learn about the Chapter Topical Method of Bible study * Get “hands-on” practice on how to do a Chapter Topical Method study

In its technical meaning, hermeneutics is often defined as the science and art of biblical interpretation. Hermeneutics is considered a science because it has rules and these rules can be classified in an orderly system.

We must be trained and adhere to the rules of interpretation.

It is considered an art because communication is flexible, and therefore a mechanical and rigid application of rules will sometimes distort the true meaning of communication. To be a good interpreter, one must learn the rules as well as the art of applying those rules.

How do you do that? By practice. You must get to a place where you can practice on your own. In your private and personal study.

The Topical Method of Bible Study involves selecting a biblical subject and tracing it through a single book, from either the Old or New Testament, or the entire Bible in order to discover what God says about the topic.

Lesson Objectives – At the end of this lesson, students will: * Be able to discuss the biblical elements of “inspiration” * Learn about the Chapter Summary Method of Bible study * Get “hands-on” practice on how to do a Chapter Summary Method study

Inspiration is God’s thoughts understood in human language; God breathed. Biblical Inspiration is the doctrine in Theology that states that the authors and editors of the Bible were led or influenced by God resulting in their writings being designated as “the Word of God.” When God’s revelation become in written form is inspiration.

God inspire people to put His thoughts in human language. This inner englightment happens to us today. Inspiration happens in results of writing of scripture. We use the word inspiration in another context today. We must separate our connotation from the theological expression. The process of inspiration is a miracle. A holy God took his thoughts and gave them to unholy men in order to give us His holy written word. It is prone to error because of human. But the Holy Spirit superintend this process. The bible did not just drop from heaven. The process of inspiration came over time. It comes through the Holy Spirit to man to the scriptures.

Lesson Objectives – At the end of this lesson, students will: * Be able to discuss the biblical elements of God’s “revelation” * Learn about the Devotional Method of Bible study * Learn about the seven dispensations. * Understand God’s Progressive Revelation

We live in a day in time when people say all types of things. We say God has revealed something to us. We must split hairs and come up with the right terminology.

We must never say the Bible teaches theological or historical error! But we need to recognize that not everything reported in the Bible may be in the exact correspondence with historical and scientific fact as we know it today.

What is the difference of Inspiration, Revelation, and Illumination?

I believe this point is very important for disciples to understand when studying the word of God. Many teachings of Jesus you will see that he is alluding or referencing OT scriptures.

In scriptures, God is revealing information to mankind about:

  • Himself- you cannot know God unless He reveals it. He inspired man to write about Him
  • His plan of salvation- we wouldn’t know that we need saving unless God had revealed it.

Everything about God is told, it is just a matter of the Holy Spirit illuminating and revealing it to us. From the Old testament, it was a progressive inclined movement of God revealing Himself to His people. When Jesus Christ came on the scene, the revelation began to plateau. Everything after revelation has been told.

“In many separate revelations [each of which set forth a portion of the Truth] and in different ways God spoke of old to [our] forefathers in and by the prophets, [But] in the last of these days He has spoken to us in [the person of a] Son, Whom He appointed Heir and lawful Owner of all things, also by and through Whom He created the worlds and the reaches of space and the ages of time [He made, produced, built, operated, and arranged them in order].” Hebrews 1:1-2

There are a number of ways you need to use to approach God’s word. If one approach is not helping you yield the results needed, then you may need to switch to another. When you begin to go deeper in God’s word, you may have to switch up your approach. If you want your interpretation to go deeper, then you must switch up the way you study. It is not telling you that your way is wrong, it is enhancing your results.

The use of these methods will enhance the student’s capacity to handle the Bible with more effectiveness by removing traditional barriers that have developed as a result of unbalance reliance on acquired knowledge
