The Kay Motsepe Schools Championship National Football Finals concluded today athe at the Bergsig Academy in Rustenburg – North West. The Madibaz partook in the Kowie prestigious University Boat Race in Port Alfred that begun on Thursday and concluded today, we catch up with them to see how the event went. Last year, the women’s crew finished eighth and the men ninth and the class of 2024 will be determined to go better.

St Mary's School Grade 12 pupil Ziyanda has earned herself a chance to represent the country and compete on an international stage U19 World Rowing Championships in St Catharine's, Canada, from 18-25 August 2024,
Ziyanda’s rowing journey began 5 years ago, and she had no idea the sport would become a large part of her life. In these subsequent years, she has been an integral part of the St Mary's Rowing Club. Ziyanda says “it’s been an honour and a privilege to have been part of a fantastic group of fun-loving, driven, supportive and dedicated rowers at St Mary's.”
In her years in the sport, she was selected for the 2022 South African Schools Rowing Union U16 Development Tour to the UK. 2023 she earned a spot on the Gauteng Provincial Squad. Has also represented South Africa at the 2023 African Beach Games in Tunisia, in the Beach Sprints event the team obtained a Silver medal in the Women's Double.

Sportlight Weekend Warrior: Soaring to Victory - High Jumper Sets New Record
The South African High School Nationals Track and Field Championship took place this past week saw Michaela Spocter, a Grade 10 learner from Curro Meridian Pinehurst in Durbanville, Cape Town, clinching gold in the Under 17 high jump category at reaching a height of 1.75 meters.
Having shattered the existing record with a breathtaking leap of 1.73 meters at the Western Cape High School Championship, this is not just a personal victory for Michaela, but sets her reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the world of athletics.
With breakdancing making its debut as an official Olympic sport at this year's summer Olympics, Courtnaé Paul, a 32-year-old breaker from Durban, is fighting for a spot in the global competition, and she will do whatever it takes to put her country and continent on the map.
Paul's journey into the world of dance began unexpectedly at the age of 11 during a church concert. Despite her initial focus on gymnastics and kickboxing, Paul discovered her talent for dance and soon joined the church's dance team.
"I realised I had a little bit of rhythm, you know, and then taking my gymnastic background, I would do these little tricks that are included in my dances without realising this would be the early making for becoming a B-Girl," she told News24.
For her, the opportunity to shine on the Olympic stage is not just about personal achievement but also about elevating Africa.
"[We] might not have as much access or whatever as the rest of the world, but we can still give them a run for their money. I think it's cool, man.
"It's opened doors, and I can see how the work that we're doing now kind of just opens further doors for the next generation to make sustainable careers off of this. That's a very important thing for me," she said.

Nicole Van Aswegen has her heart set on Europe to represent South Africa at the first-ever FIM Women’s Motorcycling World Championship. The championship will take place at six European tracks, including the United Kingdom, Italy, Portugal, Hungary, and Spain. Her racing number is #21!
Nicole has had an incredible career to date. She has a full-time job, so she spends her weekends training and racing wherever she can. She started competing in the sport in 2005. She has made waves in the South African Motorcycle industry as the first female motorcycle racer to ever compete in the 600cc South African National Championship in 2009.
Continuing to make history in 2015, Nicole became the first lady to ever podium in a National SuperSport race.
In 2023, she was appointed as the BMW South Africa Brand Ambassador and Motorsport South Africa Brand Ambassador and finished 4th overall in the Superbike 1000 class.
The challenges she has faced and overcome have paved the path for many young women who aspire to compete in the very male-dominated arena that is motorsport.
Nicole is ready to take on the challenges of the 2024 sporting season and this year is a major one for women’s motorsport. The inaugural FIM Women’s Motorcycling World Championship will see a major international super bike competition bring the world’s best together.
St Benedict’s ranked the top rowing school in SA for 30th consecutive year.
St Benedict’s College remains unbeaten, holding onto the coveted title of South Africa’s School Rowing Champions, for the 30th consecutive year. Despite fierce competition at the annual schools’ regatta, the Johannesburg boys’ school placed first in the lion’s share of the events, out rowing teams from the best of South Africa’s rowing schools.
The annual three-day regatta was held at Roodeplaat Dam with crews of rowers from 13 boys’ schools taking part. The event was alive with energy and the thrill of watching the teams give everything of themselves to finish first. All 751 boys who participated were striving for the top spot, eager to dethrone the champions. However, the remarkable dedication and countless hours of training, both on and off the water, solidified St Benedict’s victory and the fight to hold onto this coveted title unified the Bennies boys. For some of these boys, this was their last SA Champs so it was quite an emotional moment to bring to an end to their school rowing career.

While Ruth Boshoff and Debbi De Waal are preparing to put their legs to work to help fund a community food garden in the Western Cape (‘Greyton to Gardens’), in other parts of South Africa, Dayne Smith and Chad Markraaf have already set to the task of tekkies with their initiative ‘1000 Beyond Running’.
If the name rings a bell, Chad Markgraaf made headlines last year for running ‘100 marathons in 100 days’ to help a friend fight skin cancer’s financial challenge. It was a brilliant effort and one that has paved the way for Chad to get involved in more positive impact efforts in South Africa.
This year, Chad and Dayne have teamed up to tackle 10 kilometres for 100 days to raise funds to help underprivileged children along their educational journeys. At the end of the commitment, the two hope to have completed 1000 kilometres of effort for TeachBeyond—an education non-profit organisation!

Meet Philip Malan, a young, immensely talented figure skater with a sparkle in his eyes and ice beneath his feet. At just 12 years old, Philip, a Grade 7 learner at Curro Hazeldean Primary School in Pretoria, is set to represent Gauteng North as the region’s only male participant at the upcoming South African National Championships.
Selected as one of only eight South African children to attend the prestigious camp at IceLab in Bergamo, northeast of Milan, Philip's potential is undeniable. The IceLab, renowned for its innovative approach tailored to individual athletes, offers a comprehensive support system, including top-notch coaches, trainers, choreographers and mental coaches.
Philip's passion for ice skating began in November 2021 when his parents gifted him a pair of figure skates. Joining Evolution on Ice in Pretoria, he found himself captivated from the get-go. His progress was rapid, earning him his level 1 skills certificate by January 2023 and paving his way to competitions. With dedication and relentless hard work, Philip's commitment is unwavering – waking up at 4:00 each day to hit the ice rink by 5:00, balancing rigorous training sessions with school and extracurricular activities until late in the evening.
Philip's achievements are not confined to solo skating: he's also breaking barriers in pairs skating. Teaming up with Milané Gamberini since November 2022, they're South Africa's first pre-novice pair, showcasing exceptional talent and raising expectations for what's to come.
The IceLab Camp in Italy holds immense importance for Philip's development. His coach, Konrad Giering, stresses the necessity of professional coaching, especially given Philip's relatively late start compared to many skaters. This year’s runners-up on the final day of the three-day river event from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, Khwela and Mtolo, told The Witness at the finish in Durban’s Blue Lagoon that they knew it was going to be “totally impossible” to catch Andy Birkett and Matthew Fenn after they overtook them just before reaching the official day two stop — Inanda Dam.

Nthabii Mothutsi has decided to call time on her netball career. Reflecting on her journey with the Limpopo Baobabs since the age of 22, she tells gsport, “As captain, my only goal was to reign supreme. Achieving that last season, I’m very happy with leaving it at that.”
Her biggest highlight includes making people fall in love with the sport again, being sassy on the court, and winning the Telkom Netball League.
“Character sharpening. It’s taught me so much about myself,” she says, expressing gratitude for the losses that paved the way to her dream victory.
Now in Saudi Arabia for netball development, Mothutsi is focused on building herself outside the sport. She states, “I’m loving seeing myself in the young women that I’m meeting every day.”

In the heart of Masiphumelele informal settlement in Cape Town’s Deep South, a group of passionate individuals came together in 2009 to form what would later become the Warrick Wealth Masi Pumas, a rugby team that has not only defied the odds but has become a symbol of resilience, diversity, and a commitment to life beyond the rugby field.
The journey of the Masi Pumas began as a social club, with members driven by a shared love for the sport and a desire to create a positive impact in their community. In 2010, recognizing the potential to transform their passion into something greater, they took the official step of registering as a rugby team. The following year marked a significant milestone as the Masi Pumas officially joined the Western Province Rugby League, a testament to their determination and dedication. They were also able to set up their base at the Noordhoek Sports Fields, where they now run operations from.
From 2011 to 2015, the Masi Pumas experienced an impressive trajectory, earning promotions each year in the league. Their ascent through the ranks showcased not only their athletic prowess but also the indomitable spirit that characterized the team. However, the journey was not without its challenges, and in 2015, the team faced relegation to the C division.
Despite the setback, the Masi Pumas refused to be deterred. Rather than viewing relegation as a failure, the club saw it as an opportunity for growth and a chance to reevaluate their strategy. The adjudication committee of the Boxing SA (BSA) awards has four weeks to come up with ultimate winners in each of the 15 categories.
The last three nominees from each category were officially announced yesterday at a media briefing at Premier Hotel in Durban.
The awards ceremony will take place on June 30 at the Durban ICC.
BSA opened the process of voting on May 8 which ended on May 22. The period under review for nomination is April 1 2022 until March 31 2023.
About 2,000 nominations were received by BSA.
The last awards took place in 2019 for the period of 2018. Covid-19 then came and disrupted everything. Fighters like Ludumo Lamati will feel let down because his gallant performance when he won the IBO junior featherweight title against José Martín Estrada in 2021 during those trying circumstances could not be recognised.
The same happened to Prince Dlomo whose stunning sixth round knockout of Xolisani Ndongeni in 2020 could have easily won the gong in that year’s KO award.

Defending Comrades Marathon champions Tete Dijana and Alexandra Marazova will return to action at the 2023 edition of the race on June 11, race director Rowyn James said on Thursday morning.
All of the top 10 men and eight of the women from 2022 have signed up for the 87.701km ultra marathon.
With Gerda Steyn competing after missing last year’s race, there is a possibility that South Africans could win the men’s and women’s titles.
And with pundits expecting the best down times to be broken on the slightly shorter course from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, winners could pocket R1.2m each — R500,000 for the win, R500,000 for a best time and R200,000 for the first South African.

There are three disciplines, Speed, Lead and Boulder.
Mike climbs all three disciplines and has been selected for Speed.
Speed climbing is an extremely tough discipline that puts your body through enormous stress. The speed wall is 15meters high and needs to be climbed as fast as possible! The Youth record (last time I checked) is 5.8 seconds.
Mike started the Climbing team at Northcliff High at the beginning of last year and has grown the team from 3 members to 20! He is good, solid leader, reliable and a mentor to the younger team climbers. The experience and knowledge he will get from climbing in an International competition will greatly benefit NHS.

When Ernest Gwebani founded iThemba SportingSA in 2014, He set out to bring change to the livelihood of kids and young adults in the area. He invisioned that sports can provide sense of purpose to these young adults, keeping them away from criminality, drugs and other moral wrongs in life. As great Mandela once said "Sports can create hope where once there only despair"
This becomes ever more important during the current Corona virus crisis in which many of us lost jobs, livelihood and even our hope for a better future.
In this fundraiser we do not ask big sums of contributions even a small amount of donation can help us to keep going and hopefully create hope where there was only a despair.
I'm doing this for iThemba SportingSA project to buy the kiddies lunch boxes during the week training sessions as they coming from school and might not have any thing to eat at their home, and to pay for the league traveling fees , league registrations, playing cards for the team and referees officiating fees for the year.
Kids will be away on wrong doings and parents are having less stress when they are at work. Moreover it teaches the kids about life lessons and being the better people in life.

Jarrod Waberski heads to Oulton Park this weekend (7 – 10 April) for the first round of the 2023 GB3 championship. The South African single-seater talent has made the move up to GB3 this season, after finishing vice champion in the 2022 GB4 championship. A commendable feat in his debut season.
Despite the fact that Jarrod had never raced at any of the British circuits before, he achieved four race wins and multiple podium finishes during the season. Jarrod’s impressive performance also saw him being awarded South African Protea Colours earlier this year.
“I am truly proud to represent South Africa and was humbled to receive my national colours. I really have been inspired by the amount of support I have received from motorsport fans back home and sincerely thank all those who take the time to send me messages of support and encouragement,” expressed Jarrod.
Jarrod has also been selected to join the BRDC Rising Star programme. Founded in 1928, the British Racing Drivers’ Club is one of the most exclusive clubs in global sport with sought-after membership strictly reserved for motorsport's high achievers. Those selected as Rising Stars are effectively Junior Members of the Club as well as an integral part of its talent development programme.
"It is an honour to be selected into such a prestigious programme and it is certainly a proud moment in my motorsport career.”
This year, Jarrod will be racing as part of the Fortec Motorsport team and unlike last year, has had the opportunity to prepare for the upcoming season with hours of on track and simulator training. Given the physicality of the GB3 car, Jarrod has also been working on fitness and strength training during the off season.
“I am excited for the season opener at Oulton Park and am grateful for the opportunity to pursue my motorsport aspirations. I think the racing is going to be very close and I am honoured to be part of such a talented field. Brand-new, vibrant KAEM Ultra race will run together with the renowned KAEM Big Daddy, starting and finishing at Augrabies Falls National Park, South Africa.
South Africa, 1 May 2023 – Based on demand, the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon (KAEM) introduces a 5-day, supported, desert foot race that will cover a total distance of approximately 160km over 4 stages. The first of this exciting new event, named KAEM Ultra will start on 1 October 2023 with race briefing and medical checks. Early on Monday, 2 October the first participants to join this vibrant race will take on the challenge.
KAEM is well-known in international trail running circles for its “Big Daddy”, the 250km, 7-day, 6-stage, self-sufficient foot race that takes place annually in the Kalahari Desert. This year KAEM Big Daddy will kick off on 30 September, with KAEM Ultra joining the route that runs through Augrabies Falls National Park, adjacent private farmlands, and cultivated vineyards along the Orange River.
KAEM Ultra is in the format of a supported race where overnight bags will be transported for participants from camp to camp. Participants will receive goodie bags and will be allowed to pack up to 15kg that is to include all supplies required for the 5-day event, comprising a sleeping bag, mattress, clothing, food and supplements for the 5 days, and other required items. Participants will run or walk with a day pack that should include a minimum of 1.5L water, contained in bottles or a bladder, and compulsory survival gear for the stage. At the end of each stage, participants will collect their goodie bags, and in the morning prior to the start of the next stage, participants will hand in their bags for transportation.
Check Points on route are positioned every 8 to 10km and manned by a volunteer KAEM crew team. Participants receive 1.5L bottled Aquellé water at every Check Point, and 5L at the finish of each stage.
KAEM Ultra will share overnight camps with KAEM Big Daddy and “rough it up” in the same manner, offering KAEM Ultra participants a similar, magical Kalahari experience. At overnight camps, KAEM organisers provide stretch tents for cover and to sleep under as well as rudimentary toilet facilities.

With the growing popularity of basketball at school level, Sun International has stepped in to assist the Soweto Basketball Academy with a R200,000 sponsorship of 40 brand new sneakers, three Acer laptops and non-perishable food items to help the young players not only shoot the hoops, but shoot for the stars.
Founded in 2013, Soweto Basketball Academy has grown from seven children and one basketball to more than 350 players, across five different junior National Basketball Association (NBA) teams.
The Non-Profit Organisation provides a basketball programme to the children and youth of Soweto and surrounding areas, in form of recreation and life skill training. Inclusion is also a focus, with 45% of its players being female.

The Cross-Border U20 Club Competition fixtures have kicked off and a total of 64 round-robin matches is set to take place with the first round getting underway on 14 April. The competition features 21 teams from the Blue Bulls, Cheetahs, Pumas, Griquas, Valke, Leopards, and Western Province Rugby Unions, divided into three sections: North, South, and Central regions.
Last week, the Blue Bulls Rugby Union and UXi Sports International Rugby Institutes announced a newly formed partnership which created the Cross-Border U20 Club Competition.
According to Willem Strauss, President of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, "We hope that this competition will encourage more school leavers to join their local clubs and academies and that it will provide a pathway to professional rugby for players and coaches involved. This tournament will grow the game at the community level and create exposure opportunities for late developers and non-contracted junior players in South Africa. The Cross-Border U20 Club Competition is an important addition to the rugby calendar."

The polo.in.africa Season 2023-24 kicked off in March 2023 in Accra, Ghana with the Independence Cup and will traverse Africa ending in Lagos, Nigeria next year February 2024 with the NPA Lagos International Polo Tournament. Adaptive Surfing South Africa reached out to share the happy news that South Africa had placed 5th overall at the 2022 Pismo Beach World Para Surfing Championships which took place from the 7th-11th of December. Not only did we place 5th, but three of our incredible surfers earned podium places during the event.
Several organisations representing South Africa were at the event including Made for More, the Roxy Davis Foundation and Adaptive Surfing South Africa. South Africans played a vital part in getting the team to the USA. Through fundraising efforts run by the various organisations, a few of the team members got to travel overseas for the first time and compete in their first-ever international championship.

Not all of them can see. In fact, barely can they see. Yet, that doesn’t act as an impediment to their vision of playing like one, akin to a unifying spirit. There are Cricket teams that win. There are cricket teams that lose. And then, there’s the Blind Cricket South Africa; a team that stays true to the spirit of the Madiba-land.
A team that upholds the unwavering spirit of what is meant by the Protea Fire, going all out in the pursuit of excellence and in the demonstration of passion.
They did just that in a cricket tournament that deserved to make more headlines than it did in 2022: the T20 World Cup for the Blind.
Something that was quite evident all December 2022 from the onset of the moment where I stood next to the South African dugout at the Saket Sports complex in New Delhi.
Truth be told, it became a place that while being in midst of a live cricket match seemed like a musical congregation.
A place where live singing- not rabble rousing- took place in midst of a World Cup cricket match.
It was akin to an enthralling saga, albeit one ensuing during the contest against the mighty Australians, where prior to the match and after it, one thing didn’t change.
It was the singing of the closely-knit members of the Blind Cricket South Africa team that in a tone apparently Afrikaner rejoiced and cheered on in an apparent display of team spirit.

North Riding-based professional, young, talented and fearless boxer Kaine Fourie continues to dedicate his life to the sport.
Fourie, well known as K9, was born in Kempton Park and his father, Kobus Fourie, was a professional boxer. K9 said that he fell in love with boxing at a very young age.
“Since I was very young boxing was all over the TV, because my dad was a professional fighter as well. We always liked boxing and it was the only sport we watched basically. I told my dad I wanted to fight when I was 10 years old but he refused and said I must wait till I’m 16 or 17.”
Fourie dropped out of school in Grade 10 to pursue his boxing career. “To be honest, I wanted to leave school early maybe in Grade 8. I didn’t know how to tell my parents so I waited. Two years later, when I was in Grade 10, I decided it was time to let them know what I want to do. It was hard to explain to my mother but my dad asked me to show him that I want to do this. I told him I will jog the whole year from school to the gym, 8km every day and I did.”

At most times in our lives, at one point or another, we have come across a bully. Either when we were kids at school, or playing sport on the playground, or more surprisingly, corporate bullies in the workplace.
Bullies can break one down physically, emotionally, but, most importantly psychologically.
Roy Westfehling is no stranger to this scenario. As a kid he was bullied excessively in school. So much so that it started to dissuade him from wanting to continue going to school, as he faced each day in constant fear.
It was at this point that Roy's parents decided to enrol him in a Taekwondo class. Purely, so that Roy could learn some sort of self defense against the bullies at school. What his parents didn't know though, was that they were starting a love affair between Roy & Taekwondo that would go on to last for the rest of his life.
Taekwondo quickly went from mere self defense to a way of life for Roy. It instilled more than just the art of fighting in him, it instilled a new found passion, discipline, dedication & confidence that he hadn't found in himself before.

Sailing really is for everyone. This is the message of Durban’s Sail Africa Youth Development Foundation and its “Equity, Education, Environment” (EEE) programme which has won the Hollard Sport Industry Social & Environmental Impact Award for 2022.
This initiative encourages equity and gender empowerment within the sport of sailing. As an agent for social cohesion and through their aggressive transformation programme, the Foundation has changed the racial and gender profiles of sailors at regattas in Durban by encouraging equity and gender empowerment. Their internationally-profiled “Girls in Sailing” Programme has seen more females participating in sailing and improving their podium positions, and in the process given these young sailors valuable opportunities.
The Hollard Sport Industry Awards took place on Thursday 24 November. Billed as South Africa’s most prestigious awards ceremony for sport and business, these awards acknowledge the leaders and trailblazers within the business of sport. The Social and Environmental Award is open to any professional organisation either within the sport industry, or which uses sport as a vehicle to drive community, environmental, diversity and inclusion or broader social and sustainability benefits.
Sail Africa, a Non-Profit Public Benefit Organisation with Section 18 A status, registered with the Department of Social Development in September 2008. It was started with the objective of growing sailors, specifically young female sailors, from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Operating out of Boatman Lane, Durban Marina, the majority of sailing is done within the Harbour precinct.

All In, is the latest book from internationally renowned big wave surfer, ocean adventurer, multiple Guinness World Record holder, speaker and author, Chris Bertish, telling his harrowing tale of his 2017, 7500km solo SUP TransAtlantic Crossing from Morocco, Africa to Antigua in the Caribbean.
“The book tells the story of my 3months alone at sea and some of the gnarly adventures I went through to do what most people told me was completely impossible,” says Chris Bertish. “Some of the highlights include being targeted by a great white shark, towed by a giant sea squid, capsizing multiple times and surfing down 10-meter waves as challenging as anything I have faced in any Mavericks Big Wave Surfing Championships!”
Too many times, Bertish, found himself hanging on the edge of his modified SUP for dear life. He also become one with the elements, and ultimately succeeded in doing something everyone said was simply impossible.
This is the story of his incredible journey.
The book includes forwards from international ocean heavy weights Lewis Pugh and Kelly Slater, as well as Prof Tim Noakes.

Rosko Shane Specman, aka Speckmagic, born on 28 April 1989 in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, where I spent the majority of my childhood years with my parents, older sister and younger brother. I started school at George Dickerson Primary, went on to Mary Waters Secondary School, and finished my schooling at Kingswood College. School is where I discovered my love for sport. I participated in various sport codes, such as athletics, cricket, and rugby.

Tshepo Moreki was born in Natal Province, Durban.
The right-arm pacer graduated from Glenwood High School and made steady progress into the U-19 national team. As seam bowler from Glenwood High School - the same institution that produced international quick Stephen Jack - Tshepo Moreki has more than just pace.
From a young age, he showed the ability to attain late swing and land a devastating yorker.
Known for his ability to generate good pace, Moreki has a good outswinger as well as an accurate yorker.
He played in two Under-19 ODIs against England in the 2012-13 season, when he also made his first-class debut for Kwa-Zulu Natal. After two decent seasons for them, he was picked for South Africa's national academy in 2015. He toured Sri Lanka with the academy side and topped of the bowling averages in both the four-day and one-day matches. He toured Sri Lanka and had the best average in the four-day and one-day matches.
Moreki moved base from Dolphins to Cape Cobras after he was not given a contract by the former team the Dolphins, in the 2015-16. He played all the domestic one-day games, including the final and was the fifth highest wicket-taker in the tournament. The consistent performances led to him being picked in South Africa's T20 franchise league, he was snapped by Benoni Zalmi.
He currently plays for the Western Province cricket team, the WP Blitz.
As we speak, he is currently in Pretoria, playing a 4-day series against the Titans. He will be calling you from Pretoria.

Miah Nicke - now 18 years old - was diagnosed with diabetes in 2015 - 11 days after her 11th birthday. She started cycling in 2018 at the age of 14 and started doing so to create awareness because very few people actually know what Type 1 diabetes is - most people know more about type 2. She also started it because many people who themselves type 1 diabetes did not realize that they can do such sports because the challenge seems too big.

The “People’s Race” is one of the toughest events on the athletics calendar, and athletes will face many a hill as they chase for glory. The challenging route and soaring temperatures never deter the thousands who enter year after year. This year marks the 27th edition of the iconic Soweto Marathon. Soweto Marathon Trust Chairman Sello Khunou says the post-Covid return is long overdue and extends his condolences to people who lost loved ones to the pandemic. “We’re back with a bang. It’ll be a special edition and possibly our best race ever,” Khunou enthuses.An estimated 20 000 athletes from around the world will start and finish from FNB Stadium on Sunday, November 6.

She may have crossed the finish line of the 46km Cape Town Trail Marathon on her own, but winner - professional trail runner and mother-of-two Landie Greyling - says it takes a team to make her wins a reality. “When you have a family, being a mom and a professional athlete is definitely not a one-woman task. Only with a strong support structure can you achieve a goal like winning the Cape Town Trail Marathon,” Greyling said. Together with husband Christiaan, also a decorated elite trail runner, the super athlete duo are parents to one-year-old Anzel and four-year-old Christopher. “After Anzel was born, Christiaan and I decided we would not have any more kids. Then I knew I could start getting back to my best. I really wanted to go out there, use my talent and see what I could do at 38, but without spending a lot of time away from my kids.”
In what has always been considered a male-dominated sport, a 14-year-old female athlete is taking cycling in South Africa by storm. Lesego Matjila is a keen sportswoman and has started to pave the way for females in cycling. Her talents have not only been highlighted through her participation with Soweto Cycling Foundation, but have also caught the eye of potential sponsors, one being the well-known hair care brand, Gill, who has supported Lesego by kitting her out with a new bike and riding gear for the 94.7 Ride Joburg cycle race on 20 November. The talented Sowetan was discovered for her running abilities and was introduced to cycling for the first time by her coach, Lebogang Matona. When Matona suggested cycling to Lesego, she had never ridden a bike before but took to it naturally and has since become a strong contestant in cycling events. Talking about her passion for cycling, Lesego added: “This sport means a lot to me because it took me out from the streets and kept me away from things people do here in our location. Having a bike can also help build up my fitness, lead me to win road races and find myself racing in the Olympics.”

“The Amashova – South Africa’s oldest classic cycle race – has become a flagship event for the province and it will do a lot to address seasonality and getting people who wouldn’t otherwise take a trip at this time of the year to come to the region,” said Phindile Makwakwa, Acting Chief Executive of Tourism KwaZulu-Natal (TKZN). This promises higher occupancies for hotels and other accommodation facilities during what would normally be a quiet time, enabling the province “to build a lucrative tourism sector that will continue to create sustainable jobs for the people of KZN”, continued Makwakwa. The event was recently placed in the famous Gran Fondo World Tour series – a world cycling series that takes place over eight months across four continents, with the Amashova leg the final race of the season. South Africa Para Surfing Team Heading to World Para Surf Championships! Surfing is my medicine. It remains a privilege to share para surfing and surf therapy with thousands of surfers with disabilities and volunteers across the Western Cape through a formalised Para Surfing Programme that started in 2016. There are a particular group of surfers who, no matter their (dis)ability, come down to the beach, adapt, excel and have earned a spot at the World Para Surf Championships in Pismo Beach, California 4-11 December this year. For the FIRST time, South Africa will be sending a team of 9 male and 5 female para surfers and 6 support team members to the World Para Surf Championships. Each year the team grows in numbers, (dis)ability classifications and skills.

The oldest, annual, classic road-cycling race in South Africa enjoys full road closure, and this year, it has returned to follow the famous ‘Comrades’ route from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Apart from the race being one of the oldest, it’s also one of the prettiest with picturesque and challenging routes that will see cyclists young and old, from beginners to advanced, participate in the 38km, 65km and 106km routes. For Jacquin Hess, golf has become the pathway to success. At first, playing professionally was a boyhood dream, but now the 31-year-old travels the world, competes with the best and hopes to one day go up against some of the greatest players of his generation, including one of his sporting idols Tiger Woods. Jacquin, from Robertson in the Western Cape, learnt about golf from the pages of magazines like Compleat Golfer and Golf Digest, piquing his interest at an early age. His mother, a widow, worked at a golf estate on weekends when Jacquin was a boy. He was too young to be left home alone, so he reluctantly tagged along. It was here, whiling away the hours that Jacquin would come to read about the sport. Watching players on the course, he quickly became engrossed in the elegance of the game; one he’d find himself enjoying once he finally hit the green at age 15

South Africa Para Surfing Team Heading to World Para Surf Championships! Surfing is my medicine. It remains a privilege to share para surfing and surf therapy with thousands of surfers with disabilities and volunteers across the Western Cape through a formalised Para Surfing Programme that started in 2016. There are a particular group of surfers who, no matter their (dis)ability, come down to the beach, adapt, excel and have earned a spot at the World Para Surf Championships in Pismo Beach, California 4-11 December this year. For the FIRST time, South Africa will be sending a team of 9 male and 5 female para surfers and 6 support team members to the World Para Surf Championships. Each year the team grows in numbers, (dis)ability classifications and skills.

Tania and Jacques De Kock have set off on a journey from Cape Town to Mpumalanga, running over 1000km along the way to raise funds for CANSA. De Kock have set themselves a mammoth task of running 1000km to raise funds for CANSA, they are documenting their journey online and call themselves the “Running Turtles”.
In 2016, Jacques’ father passed away from throat cancer. The couple decided they wanted to do something that would honour “Pa Billy”. They started running, and used their running to raise awareness and try to make a difference. They set their goal and set off, determined.
South African powerlifting prodigy Nkosinathi Suhail Ntuli returned to Johannesburg on September 19 with a silver medal from the African Powerlifting Championships that were held in Morocco. Besides being crowned the second-strongest 93kg powerlifter on the continent, the medal is the culmination of a fairytale story that starts in Soweto with a little boy who had no idea he’d one day travel to represent his country in a power sport.
“I am naturally very excited - and a bit sore - but I am honoured to have represented my country in a sport I love, nevermind travel to another country to do what I love. About two months ago I didn’t think I would even be able to compete but then Zoom Fibre caught wind of my crowd-funding page, sponsored me, and the rest is history,” he says with a contagious smile.

Wach, who towered over the much smaller Lerena, tried to get some distance with his jab in the first round, but as soon as Lerena snapped the Polish fighter’s head back with a left hook-right uppercut from his southpaw stance, the pattern was set.

I took up archery in 2000 first buying a bow for hunting only. I am still a keen hunter and have harvested 13 big game species with the bow and in total I have hunted more 150 big game animals. I took up target archery in 2010 first entering the ABO 3D competitions. In my first year shooting ABO I won 2 of the three triple crowns and the National championships with a record score of 408 that still stand today. In 2011 I started target archery focusing on World archery events I really like the precision of outdoor target archery coupled with the adrenaline of the elimination matches.

We play competitions like, district leagues, Provincial leagues, social leagues, Twizza club development league and National Championship where the men's National sqad is being selected. In order for players to take part in leagues or national championship they need to belong to a team and be registered within their district and with Netball South Africa.
Men's netball it's growing at high rate compared to the past, we even now have a South Africa Senior men's netball team which won Men's International tournament that was held in Pretoria last year September 2021and this year we saw the introduction of men's under 23's at the National Championship.

Cerebral palsy, a rare disorder that affects the spinal cord, has not stopped Ronewa Mudzanani from taking to the court to exhibit his talent. The Limpopo tennis player reckons that he was born for greatness.
Wheelchair-bound Mudzanani’s breakthrough came in 2016 when he was nominated as one of the finalists in the Limpopo Sports Awards. He walked away with the top prize. He then captured the interest of Tennis South Africa, where he was selected to be part of the national side’s quad class.
As he progressed well into his tennis career, Mudzanani featured for the national team during the 2021 BNP Paribas World Team Cup, where Team South Africa won a bronze medal following a stellar perfomance.

She completed the swim in 2hours 12mins.The reason why I am sharing this swim is she did not only do this swim for herself. She teamed up with Two Ocean Aquarium Foundation to help raise funds for the rehabilitation of turtles. She is on a mission to raise 50k and we are halfway there.She has been interviewed by various radio stations and had newspaper articles done by our local paper.

Tegan Phillips loves to cycle, so much so that she uses her love of cycling to empower other women and uplift women in poorer communities. Her love of cycling is taking her on an adventure that will set a world record and see the South African flag fly high. Tegan plans to become the fastest woman to cycle from Cairo to Cape Town. Tegan started her love of cycling most comically; she entered a competition by submitting a comic and won an adventure bicycle. The win was such a life-changing one that she used the bike to cycle through Spain and drew cartoons about her experience.

Malawian-born and raised entrepreneur, Bongani Chinkanda, aims to put the spotlight on the realities of anxiety and depression as he attempts to cycle 160km on a gravel road from Hartbeespoort to Sun City in May this year.
Chinkanda, who was schooled in Harare, Zimbabwe before completing a degree at Rhodes University in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown) in the Eastern Cape, has launched his R160 000 in 160km Back A Buddy campaign, which he aims to achieve on Saturday 7 May 2022.
After suffering from acute depression and anxiety in 2015 and 2016, Chinkanda’s idea for the race attempt was born after he enlisted to undertake his first Ultra-marathon this year - which is 160km – in the Race to the Sun event.
"I thought why not cycle for R1000 per km, hence R160k in total. I am hoping the campaign will raise awareness around depression & anxiety especially for professional black males,” shares the cyclist and marathon enthusiast.
Having already raised R10 000 for the campaign, Chinkanda says that “every amount counts” and is appealing to the public to support this worthy cause.

Former South African tennis player, Annette du Plooy, received the ITF Award for Services to the Game during the Tuks International (ITF $60,000 World Tennis Tour) at TuksTennis, University of Pretoria on Sunday, 3 April 2022.
During the mid-1960s, du Plooy was ranked in the top ten female globally and in 1966 she won the French Open Mixed Doubles title with Frew McMillan, defeating Ann Haydon-Jones and Clark Graebner in three sets.
In 1972, her coaching career began after completing coaching courses offered through LTA while living in England. She completed further coaching certificates under Reeve Hudson and quickly reached Professional Coaching Level.
The 78-year-old successfully went on to coach players individually and managed national teams at international events.

The boys decided to collect second-hand sporting equipment that could be sent to underprivileged children, schools and sporting clubs. They started collecting takkies and sports shoes, racquets, bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs, gloves and balls.
Over the years, they have kitted out many teams, including Central Joburg Blind Cricket, Alexandra Hub Cricket Club, and many more! Ross’s mother, Alison Garrett, has played a vital role in managing where the donations go, connecting the collections with the people who need them most.

A large group, including Pritzen, got clear early along the fast M3 section but got whittled down as they ascended Chapman’s Peak and finally Suikerbossie. By the time they reached the top of Suikerbossie Pritzen, Weber, Kruger and early animator Byron Munton had got clear with the peloton already out of the running. It is rare that a pro breakaway succeeds on the relatively short Cycle Tour route.
In the final kilometre Munton opened up a tactical sprint and it was the tall figure of Pritzen that managed to pull through for a superb win.

Now 70 years of age, Louis ran his first Comrades in 1973 at the age of 22. Ever since, he has fostered a special relationship with the Comrades which has become an integral part of his life.

Brad – the son of 13-time Dakar participant and ex-KTM factory rider Alfie Cox – completed his first-ever Dakar Rally on Friday, 14 January, where he finished in a respectable 25th position overall and fifth in the GP-2 category. This has pushed him to third in the World Rally Championship rankings.

He grew up in the back seat of his father’s rally car. Raised in a motorsports family, it was only normal to see Schalk Buger on the start line of the Dakar. After years competing in the South-African rally championship he switched to off-road races. A crash during the Botswana 1000 could have cost him dearly. An injury to his hand forced him to take a one year break enabling him to come and visit the Dakar in Peru back in 2017. That’s when he saw the size of the event and realized he wasn’t quite ready for it. The initial goal was to take part in 2020 but an accident pushed back that objective. For his first Dakar, the South-African businessman will have his usual co-driver Henk Janse Van Vuuren at his side.

Rynfield resident and professional golfer Nicole Garcia (30) started playing golf at the age of 16 after realising her love for the sport when her mum took her for a lesson with Kerry van Welsen at the Benoni Lake Club.
“Golf is my job and it’s what I love, and travelling the world for my livelihood isn’t such a bad way to live,” she said.
“I enjoy it because it’s only you against the golf course. Even though this life can be hard, it also teaches you how to be strong.
“It’s only you out there; no one else can influence how you play.”
Matriculating in 2008 from St Dominic’s Catholic School for Girls in Boksburg, this professional had already been experiencing her love of golf and continued rising, reaching pro status in 2014, with many memorable moments along the way.
“I will never forget when I won the First Stage Q School in Morocco. I had lost my playing status in my rookie year and needed to re-qualify to get back onto the tour and then won the first stage by 13 shots and came second in the final stage,” she said.
Garcia also fondly remembers her first US Open.

Former archery player, Barbara Manning, is the first South African woman to be elected as one of the Federation of African Archery council members. Manning started her archery career in 1969 and has represented South Africa at several international competitions.
Following her husband’s death in 1997, she retired from shooting and took over an administrative role as means of giving back to the sport. In 2002, she was elected as the Secretary of South African Archery Association and was responsible for turning the federation into a professionally run body. She was also instrumental in setting up the High Performance for Target Archery in the country. From the inception of the Performance Squad to the archers competing in international competitions, Manning managed this squad.

Cricket SA (CSA) has confirmed the inbound tour of the West Indies against the Proteas in four Women’s One-Day Internationals (ODI) starting this month.

The Extreme Ice Fliers have done it, they have set the Guinness World Record for speed skating; the officials are now reviewing the record to make it official!
A group of talented skaters from all walks of life participated in the World Record attempt this past Sunday, the 17th of October 2021. Dave Draper explained that he was signed off to attempt the record last year; however, many members of the Northgate Speed Skating Club were under the age of 16, meaning they couldn’t take part. He reached out to the Evolution on Ice Skating School and Wolves Ice Hockey Club to help attempt this record.
With no other road cycling event held since 2019, the Amashova event will finally resume – albeit in a different format and is set to ‘shake things up’ for cyclists. Amashova Durban Classic race team made a welcome announcement that the popular event will take place again on October 24.
With support from the city of Durban, RTI, SAPS and Metro Police, the new ‘Shova Shake-up’ will offer cyclists the option to ride a 38km or an 80km route with full road-closure on the M13, instead of the usual R103 route.
This out and back ride, starting from outside Moses Mabhida Stadium to Shongweni and back again, will make for easier planning and logistics for cyclists wishing to participate in the longer distance.

The pace was a bit much and he unfortunately ended up being left behind. I messaged him and apologized, and we arranged to go out today. We went Camps Bay to Hout Bay over the suikerbossie hill. Man when we were about 13km in and chatting I asked him what his Pb was - and he told me 2:10. Looking at my watch I saw we were on target for ~ 2. I said to him, come today we are doing your PB. What I witnessed was such an inspiring show of grit and determination. Cruising up the suikerbossie hill at 5:50/km when that’s not your natural tempo is difficult enough, but we got to the top and had plenty of time to coast down into the bay and get a celebratory video ready (I have a new found respect for Cameramen) well done Dean, was an amazing run! Super proud of you!

Mass participation sport is back. The City of Cape Town will roll out the welcome mat for the second weekend in a row when the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon returns to the Mother City’s streets and mountain trails on 16 and 17 October.
The organisers have confirmed that they are ready to host the country’s first major marathon for 2021, and that they are on track with the final preparations, in accordance with their COVID-19 Risk Mitigation Plan.

Winning the 2021 Momentum gsport Awards SuperSport School Sport Star of the Year accolade has inspired Miyanda Maseti to continue striving for greatness.
Maseti, who is a three-time South African BMX Champion, two-time national champion and junior Protea colours recipient, was recognised for her outstanding achievements at the 16th edition of the awards ceremony took place on 31 August.
In her six years of riding, Maseti reveals that she never thought that she would win an award so early in her career but has welcomed the award as her biggest highlight to date.

When Ntando Mahlangu jumped 7.17 metres, setting a world record to win gold in the long jump at the Paralympic Games there, was a moment of shocked silence in a house 13 498km away from Tokyo.Neil Cornelius could not believe what he had witnessed. But the moment the result flashed on the television screen, he went berserk. It was with just reason. His athlete had won.
"I yelled. I think it might be the loudest yell ever. My wife rushed over to see if I was OK, explained Cornelius, who had been coaching Mahlangu via WhatsApp messages from the sitting room of his house in Elarduspark.

As the international paddling season continues, the South African stand-up paddling team is set to take part in the ICF SUP World Championships in Balatonfured, Hungary, that will be taking place from 9 - 12 September 2021.

They have urged people to support the initiative and will be providing details on their social media pages as to how this can be done.
“Those young girls who are at school who often miss large numbers of school days during the menstruation cycle can remain at school. Ultra swimmer Sarah Ferguson is taking on her toughest challenge yet ‒ a 1500km swim along the coast from Durban to Cape Town.
As the driving force behind conservation platform Breathe Conservation, Ferguson is focused on raising public awareness about the devastating impact plastic pollution in oceans and rivers is having on our planet.
Ferguson announced her bold plan to swim along the South African coastline at the Sublime World Ocean Day Swim.This week she told the Independent on Saturday that she would take on “the wildest coastline in the world” as she plans to swim the distance in stages.

Cricket South Africa’s interim board and decision-making members’ council say they have reached an agreement and “a crisis has been averted” after the government evoked a law to defund the federation and remove recognition for all the country’s national teams.
It would have meant that South Africa would not have been able to compete in international cricket while its national federation was stripped of its status.
The agreement between the interim board and members’ council was announced late Sunday night and two days after the minister of sport said he was exercising his powers to no longer recognize Cricket South Africa as the body in charge of the sport in South Africa.

Schoombie founded an NGO, the Carlstrong Foundation, after his brother, Carl, was murdered in 2015. He was dragged from a taxi, beaten and left in the street by his assailants. He died in hospital four days later.

It’s been 25 years since SA produced its first IBF heavyweight champion, and that was when charismatic Francois “White Buffalo” Botha defeated Germany’s Axel Schultz for the vacant title.
The fight took place today – December 9 – in 1995 in Stuttgart. The country had previously witnessed Gerrie “Bionic Hand” Coetzee write local boxing history by becoming the first ever African to fight for and win a world heavyweight title – the WBA – when he knocked out American Michael Dokes in the 10th round in 1983. Coetzee also became the first Caucasian world heavyweight champion in 23 years.

Brandon Valjalo stepped onto an old board found in the garage belonging to his brother at just 3 years of age. Cape Town, November 10th, 2020 – South African professional skateboarder and Olympic athlete, Jean-marc Johannes has officially broken the Guinness World Record of completing 30 consecutive Ollie 180’s in one minute. This event took place at The Shred Skate Park in Cape Town on November 7th, 2020.
A Frontside 180 Ollie is an Ollie with a 180-degree turn. The body and the board jump and turn together in a frontward motion exposing the front part of your body first, hence the name “Frontside”. This trick is a useful foundation and comes into play for a whole range of other tricks like FS Flips or BS Noseslides. The most Ollie 180’s completed in one minute is a total of 27, a previous Guinness World Record, set by Nicholas Whitehurst of the USA in 2014.

He made an impact at continental level for the first time at the age of 21, securing the bronze medal at the 2010 African Championships, and two years later he went one better by earning silver at the next edition of the biennial showpiece.
After sending the shot sailing beyond 20 metres for the first time in 2013, Cremona broke new ground in 2014, claiming the African title and taking fourth place at the Commonwealth Games. He went on to close out his campaign by finishing sixth at the Continental Cup.

Starting off under strict Health compliance regulations, all athletes and staff have entered into a bio bubble for the 23rd SuperSport Wheelchair Basketball Series – a four-month league campaign that will be played as a knock-out tournament over three days from the 23rd till 25th October 2020.
All games will be broadcast live by SuperSport and played at The Home of Wheelchair Basketball, the Vodacom Mandeville Indoor Sport Centre, which will host this prestigious spectacle.

Harris overcomes obstacles to break Race Across SA record Alex Harris fought through high temperatures and sleep deprivation to ultimately break the Race Across South Africa (RASA) record when he crossed the finish line in Wellington yesterday.
The 49-year-old completed the 2 150km challenge, which started in Pietermaritzburg, in nine days and 22 hours. The previous record was set by Martin Dreyer in 2017 and stood at 10 days and six hours.

Freestyle BMX rider Murray Loubser has been photographed many a time in his career by fellow South African Wayne Reiche. Over time both became intrigued about the interplay between the shapes, shadows and architecture that appeared in images Reiche shot of Loubser.
From this the idea, Shapes in the City was born. To produce a photo-led project that would capture the architecture and the geometric patterns that you find occurring in any city and showcase the way a BMX can be seen in these surroundings. Presently a record 20 SA players are plying their trade in foreign women’s leagues and that points to the growth of individual players.
Many have come through the country’s systems, which have been an integral part of Safa’s Vision 2022, a plan launched in 2014. The plan targets the fundamental rebuilding of structures at all levels to create the conditions to bring about international success for the national teams.
Women have had increased participation in the governance of local football. On the regional front, two women hold the positions of presidents, and a total of 52 serve as vice-presidents.

The Walking with Brandon Foundation who has as its co-founder/ambassador Brandon Beack. Brandon was involved in a gymnastics accident in 2012, leaving him quadriplegic. He has successfully beaten many odds and today represents South Africa all over the world as a Paralympian. He even drives his own car. He is a motivational speaker, and heads up the Peer Support Programme at their Therapy & Beyond Centre/Walking with Brandon Foundation. He also produced a series of videos over the last few months which people who are wheelchair-bound could use to stay active with exercises they could/can do during lockdown.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the income of three-time Comrades Marathon champion Bong'musa Mthembu. After both the 100km World Championships and Two Oceans Marathon were cancelled earlier in April, Mthembu has suffered a huge financial setback as Comrades Marathon has also followed suit.
This year's Comrades Marathon winners in the men's and women's races were set to bag whooping prize money of R570, 000.

Jean-Marc Johannes started skateboarding when he was 10-years-old.
"That's when I got my first board. I saw a lot of people doing it while in school and I struggled a lot with sports when I was younger and I discovered skateboarding. It looked like something positive and I wanted to be involved with it. A lot of the kids were doing it and I wanted to give it a try." After asking his parents if he could get his own board, he looked around the family garage and found an old skateboard which they used when they were younger.

Mthembu stumbled upon paddling when she went to Shongweni Dam with her friends and after she got involved she was hooked. She has become a trailblazer for black female paddlers having become the first black female to complete the Dusi Canoe Marathon in a K1 in 2019.
“I started paddling in 2013 and I thought it was a joke at first but then I fell in love with the sport.
“After a few months of paddling I started travelling to races and went to Cape Town and Gauteng to race which was exciting.”
The youngster who is currently completing matric will be in for an exciting few months as she juggles her school work and competing on the international stage.

As is the reality for all athletes around the world, the ongoing covid-19 pandemic has presented its unique challenges for South African cyclist Ashleigh Moolman Pasio.A pro rider with the CCC-Liv team, Moolman Pasio is currently based in Spain, and for good reason she says. “Being a cyclist in South Africa you have many challenges,” she says. “One of these is safety for a woman cyclist… which is unfortunately a reality. The traffic conditions are also not conducive for a relaxed training environment.”
“South Africa also does not have any pro cycling events – yes there are mass participation events with a pro-element, but that’s it,” she adds.

Ten years ago South Africa hosted the biggest sporting event in the form of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. The tournament’s opening game was between the host nation, Bafana Bafana and Mexico.

On 6 March 2018, Gwala was attacked on his pushbike by three men during a training ride before sunrise around Durban. The men pulled him from the bike and cut the calf of his right leg with a saw, damaging his muscles, nerves, and bone, then attacked his left leg. The attack continued even though he offered the attackers his wallet, mobile phone, and bike. The men departed and Gwala crawled to the road where he flagged down a car and was taken to a local hospital. Gwala said that the men spoke in a language he did not understand. Doctors were confident that his legs could be saved.

The postponement of this year’s Olympic Games, due to have started in late July, has had a massive effect on a multitude of athletes, among them star Madibaz swimmers Alaric and Alard Basson.

National assistant coach Dumisani Chauke and Proteas shooter Lenize Potgieter have led Netball South Africa’s charge on spreading the Covid-19 message, while offering online support to help players stay healthy.
Chauke uses her Twitter account for daily “Coaching From Home” posts for netballers to stay active during lockdown. Apart from the locally-based national squad members, Chauke is also reaching out to Proteas players who are in England, Australia and New Zealand where they have professional contracts.
