South African National Parks (SANParks) manages a system of parks which represents the indigenous fauna, flora, landscapes and associated cultural heritage of the country. Of all the national parks, most have overnight tourist facilities, with an unrivalled variety of accommodation in arid, coastal, mountain and bushveld habitats.
SANParks Podcasts focus on a range of sound recordings such as specific wildlife information (e.g. birding, trees, mammals, reptiles) as described by various internal and external experts; discussion panels introducing and debating various SANParks related issues; ranger stories; park descriptions; and podcasts of live activities such as walks and game drives.
Chris gives an overview of all the SANParks’ parks and contrasted their operation with parks in the United Kingdom. He makes special mention of Mapungubwe, because of the role a Welsh botanist, Illtyd Buller Pole-Evans played in its original establishment as a botanic reserve, and then spoke of the incredible discovery a decade later of the ruins of the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape that would lead to its proclamation as a national park and world heritage site some 60 odd years later. He also points that Kruger National Park, and the entire country of Wales are roughly the same size at approximately 20 000km².
