Hi everyone and welcome to Feed Me Serotonin, the motivation and self-awareness podcast aimed at tackling many of the issues faced by Gen Z today.

I started this podcast in the depths of the first covid-19 lockdown here in the UK and felt a huge decline in the mental well-being of many of my friends, and also me too.

So I wanted to open up discussions with my peers and experts in certain fields to educate, inspire, and encourage dialog surrounding mental health and all issues facing young people today. I want you to know that this podcast is as much a learning experience for me as it is for you, and I interview world-class guests every week to learn and discuss with them.

I upload every single Monday at 7 am London time, so be sure to subscribe and join me every Monday.

In this weeks episode, Alex unpacks social comparison and some of the benefits and drawbacks of comparing ourselves to each other.

Whether it’s by starting a new business, getting a 90 on your dissertation, or by being the strongest in the gym, we always find ourselves in pursuit of admiration from others. This can be a good thing because it drives us to be better and forces us to leap out of our comfort zone, but can also be a bad thing when seeing people more successful causes us to lose all hope. This is the issue laid out in this episode.

Some theories touched upon in this episode include Festinger's (1942) social comparison theory. Alex also reiterated Warren Buffet's Ovarian Lottery and Inner/Outer Scorecard.

EPISODE NOTES

In this episode, we discuss morning routines and how important they are for our emotional wellbeing. We also talk about the so-called “billionaire morning routine”, with examples from Warren Buffet, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk.

Steff (in his non-scientific opinion) also stresses the absolute necessity of including biscuits in our mental diets. In his own words, “we can’t talk about mental health without biscuits.” (I think this might become a pattern).

Welcome to our first episode!

In this episode, we introduce ourselves and share information about where we're from, what we're doing at the moment and how the pandemic has affected our motivation. We are both second-year university students, so we have dedicated this episode to how student life has changed over the course of the UK lockdown and how we are coping with the new ways of learning. We touch on our career goals and how isolation has changed our thinking about our ambitions, and we discuss how virtual learning has impacted us and our studies.

We introduce motivation and discuss how we motivate ourselves for our studies and in our daily lives. Motivation is at an all-time low, however as of the date this episode was recorded, plans have been announced for a slow return to normal life in the UK, so we discuss how motivated we have been over the past year and how this might change moving forward.

We hope you enjoy listening to our first episode. Be sure to stay tuned for more content on well-being and motivation in the coming weeks.
