This podcast started with a simple purpose: to explain in easy to understand terms information surrounding coronavirus as the news developed with hundreds of installments, it now serves as an audio diary of the pandemic as it happened. Its video partner is "A Doctor in The Pandemic" on YouTube is on the Dr Brian McDonough Channel as well as Spotify. The Dr. Brian McDonough Show was a natural evolution as it became apparent as pandemic turned endemic we needed distractions as well as critical information. Helpful advice will always remain but escapism is also good for our overall health.

The 2000 Convention was held in Philadelphia from July 31-August 3.
At the time I was medical reporter at the Fox affiliate in Philadelphia and (since we were the local Fox affiliate) we were given a prime position, incredible access and a key role in feeding video/content to the network. There was no reason for me to be at the convention, and I was anticipating an easy week. Early in the convention, former President Gerald R. Ford had a major health issue that led to his hospitalization. I spent the week at The First Union Center (now Wells Fargo Center). This was a time before significant social media and a time before cable networks realized they could get ratings with talking heads.
It was the only time I was ever involved covering any aspect of politics. However, I remember the rhetoric was tough and the stakes were high, but there seemed to be a discourse where people could voice opinions and others could voice theirs without vitriol. On the eve of the 2024 political convention season our nation is hurting and a former President came inches from losing his life. Call me naive, but I am hoping our politicians can cut down on the rhetoric and the talking heads in both cable and social media can stop trying to get ratings, followers and cash from stoking the flames of hatred. A quarter of a century ago I had a front row seat---things weren't perfect (democracy is imperfect) but it was civil.

It has been three years since the first Covid-19 case was reported in America. A look at the pandemic in real time.
In 1995 I was asked to prepare a five part series called "The Cost of Violence". I recently discovered three of the "air checks"--the actual segments that were shown to the Philadelphia audience. In one of the stories I featured a gunshot victim named Ilene Myers. She is just one of hundreds of people I had the honor of meeting and interviewing for hundreds of stories over the years. Many of the stories that I discover are so old that decades have gone by since I have seen them, but I remember the random nature of how this woman was shot and the courage that she displayed at the time of the interview. This is her story. Her story is one of great courage and optimism.
On June 17, 1994 the country was glued to their television sets watching a white Bronco traveling as normal speed along California Highway I-91 followed by dozens of police cars. The "Bronco Chase" is familiar to the vast majority of people in America and throughout the world. Back in 1994, I was working with the Fox Television affiliate in Philadelphia as a medical reporter on the 10:00 pm newscast. Police discovered the Bronco with OJ Simpson at 6:45 west coast time. The Philadelphia 10:00 news (east coast time) began as the chase was just beginning and the newscast did not end until OJ had turned himself in. I found myself reporting live on the air as events unfolded. Recently I discovered that I had a copy of the newscast. There have been many stories about the chase using real as well as "creative" footage. I felt it was important to re create the way it happened, the evening it happened.

My apologies for being blunt, but we still have a chance to save as many lives as possible.
According to my calculations the US has about 4.3% of the world's population and 26.68% of cases and 26.8% of deaths. What are we doing wrong?
The focus of Coronavirus Today (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) is shifting to staying healthy in the continuing COVID-19 environment and will include health issues like heart disease, cancer, diabetes etc. COVID-19 will still be featured prominently.
There are two major issues plaguing the world in 2020: COVID-19 and the fact that we as humans can't grasp the message that we are only as strong as the weakest among us. My fear is that in fifty years we will look back and have only solved one of the issues. I pray I am wrong, but we all can make that fear not become reality.
The votes are in: Coronavirus Today moves to three time per week (Saturday, Tuesday, Thursday)
