We’ve all been there! We finally want to tackle that photo organising project, we’re off to a good start and motivated and then we encounter the first roadblock which stops us in our tracks. Next thing we know: we are procrastinating and the project comes to a halt.

Here are some of the most common roadblocks we have encoutered:

  1. Not knowing where to start
  2. Too many photos and pictures everywhere
  3. Too many software options
  4. Deciding whether to scan photos vs negatives
  5. Which is the right scanning equipment?
  6. What to do after you have scanned photos - archive them in albums or boxes?
  7. Do I want my photos in books and in which order? Chronological or just done?
  8. Figuring out dates of undated photos
  9. Tell one person's story? Or integrate several chronologically?
  10. Time and place to work on a project without interruption

We discuss solutions to all those roadblocks and also invite you to listen to episodes 49 and 106 that are all about how to stop procrastination (see links in related episodes below)! And don’t forget to download our free e-guide about this very topic here!

This episode has to do with our Golden Rule 5 - Do something! What we mean is find means to bring your photos back into your life so you can enjoy them.

One beautiful way of doing so is creating a photo wall or a photo gallery in your home. We are excited to have our colleague and expert Haleh Shoa from Picturli back for this episode!

She not only shares some practical tips but actually shows us how she designs a photo wall using Canva. Hence, we strongly encourage you to watch this episode rather than listen. If you prefer to listen, click here to see the screenshots of the visuals she shared with us.

You don’t necessarily need Canva to design your photo wall, Haleh also shares some simple tips about how to tackle it without digital help.

We talk about

  • where in the home a photo wall can be,
  • what we can display - hint: not just photos!
  • pros and cons of using frames and what substrates photos can be printed on,
  • how to arrange the pictures and memorabilia
  • designing a picture wall with and without Canva

Again, please watch it here (and subscribe to the channel, we might add more videos in the future) and share with anybody who might be interested - thanks!

Are you expecting a baby? Then this episode is totally for you! Even if you have already welcomed your baby recently, we encourage to join us, we’re sure there is a tip or two for everyone with children.

When a new baby comes into our life, many things change and sometimes routines and habits simply fly out the window and life can get a bit chaotic. Before we know it, photo chaos has taken over and we are drowning in cute baby photos.

Listen in to hear some tips about how you can stay on top of things when it comes to your photo management. One key is preparation. Now is not the time to work through your backlog of thousands of photos. However, if you can, make sure that your backlog is backed up so it will be there once you are ready to curate that collection.

Nothing stops you from implementing a system if you haven’t got one yet. Regularly transfer your photos to your photo hub and back it up using the 3-2-1 method (more about that in our 5 Golden Rules episodes). Hone your skills before baby arrives and it will be so much easier for you.

This great new iPhone app to help clean up your camera roll isOllie. You can get it at a discounted rate using this link and the code DIYPHOTO20.

Also a great place to start is to take one of Miss Freddy’s courses, especially the Backup Bootcamp* or check out the many courses over at The Photo Managers Academy*** to find a suitable course.

Finally, we’ like to encourage you to be mindful about privacy when sharing photos. Refer to Episode 099 to learn more about this topic. You even might want to have a chat with relatives about it, too, so that nobody shares photos of your children if you’re not comfortable with it.

Are you good at procrastinating about your photos? Well, you are not alone!

Since Chantal is planning to run mini-classes / workshops soon she recently conducted a survey to find out what readers and listeners are interested in most. The clear winner was ‘How to Stop Procrastinating about my Photos’.

Interestingly, Fiona and Chantal have already created an e-guide (downloadable here) about that very topic.

Since it seems to be such a popular topic, we are re-visiting some of its content and are diving a bit deeper in some of the reasons why we tend to procrastinate when it comes to our photos and what we can do about it.

Possible and typical reasons are for example the lack of knowledge of how to do something, using goals that are too abstract or perfectionism.

Get our free e-guide to see more details here!

The big question is how we can overcome procrastination and, unsurprisingly, we recommend to become really clear about your Why, which is our Golden Rule 2.

Not only this, we are also talking about individual’s core values such as integrity, honesty, creativity and many more, and how these can influence our Why. As always, we are using practical examples that hopefully encourage you to getting started.

We are excited and honoured to welcome David Vaskevitch from Mylio Photos today.

Tune in to find out why he thinks of Mylio Photos not only as his second heart but also his second brain. He shares some of his personal stories that wonderfully show how a good photo management program can help us keep memories alive and also have fun with our photos.

We learn about various features Mylio Photos offers, such as:

  • importing photos, videos and documents from various sources
  • the event feature, which he calls the ‘Life Calendar’
  • the easy implementation of the 3-2-1 backup method we always promote (find out more in episode #002)
  • the fact that Mylio Photos works across all platforms. It doesn’t matter, whether you use an iPhone, an Android phone, a PC or a Mac. It simply works for every device.
  • the new deduplication and decluttering feature and
  • the shared albums option.

There are many more things to learn about Mylio Photos and as David said: “learning Mylio is a journey and you can start small”. He encourages us all to not shy away from it because it might look overwhelming at first glance. In his words: “if you learned to drive a car, you can easily learn Mylio!”

We encourage you to have a look at this program, especially if you don’t use another one yet and are looking for a solution to store and manage your memories. Check it out here. You can start with the free plan before making any decisions.

Mylio Photos also has a great support team that can help you if you have questions or find lots of tutorials over at their YouTube channel.

Before we start with the actual topic of this episode, Chantal would like to ask you for a favour. She is planning to offer short online classes in the future. She’d really appreciate if you could take a minute to fill in this survey for her so she can find out what you are most interested in.

Now on to our today’s topic:

Chantal just came back from Switzerland where she helped celebrate her mum’s 80th birthday. Of course, that involved some photo gifts.

Hence, today she can share with us what she created and how she went about it. It’s a real life case study, so to speak.

We are talking about four projects she did:

  • A printed A3 photo book of mum’s life
  • A Nixplay (digital photo frame) playlist with photos used in book, displayed during the celebrations
  • Peg line with fairy lights to decorate the room on the day of the celebration with printed photos of mum
  • A memory scrapbook using photos taken and printed on the day of the celebration with messages from visitors and guests

Chantal not only describes what the projects were but also how she tackled each of the projects. We discuss the process, the design steps including what the struggles and what the easy parts were.

There will also be one or two blog posts about that topic over at Photos In Order’s blog page.

We are thrilled to have Caroline Guntur from The Swedish Organizer back as our special guest to talk about the approach author Margareta Magnusson describes in her book The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning.

Caroline has recently written a blog post that drew our attention: Respectfully, This is the ONE Thing Swedish Death Cleaning Gets Completely Wrong. We could really relate to what she has written and wanted to hear and learn more about her take on The Swedish Death Cleaning approach.

Whilst we of course talk about photos and memories, Caroline also gives us an overview and explanation where The Swedish Death Cleaning comes from and how ingrained it is in her culture. How it’s about downsizing, minimising our footprint, consuming only what we need and pay it forward to others if we have too much.

It is a long-term approach and philosophy rather than a once-off big decluttering and organising project, and this episode is definitely one not to be missed!

Having said this, there is (as always) no wrong or right. However, approaching this method in a different order of operation - as Caroline suggests - makes sense to us and you also might be interested to learn more about it and to give it a go.

If you do need help for your photo management, we encourage you to check out Caroline’s courses*. They are very thorough and well structured and come highly recommended.

The short answer is: No, it seems it is not outdated!

Findings from a recent survey we conducted amongst our listeners showed that using a simple folder structure as opposed to a photo management program is not as out of fashion as we might have thought.

Listen in to find out

  • where people store their digital photos,
  • how they structure their folders of their photo collection and
  • which programs they use to manage them.

We also respond to some comments and questions such as what to do when running out of storage space on your computer, or if you’d rather not use the cloud and many more.

We were especially pleased to hear from multiple listeners that they have put the 3-2-1 backup system in place - bravo! If you haven’t got a system in place yet, check out our episode Episode 002 Golden Rule 1 - Backup.

Meet Libby from Momento in Sydney and discover how this Australian photo book printing company came into existence - as the second one in the world at the time - and how they are serving their clients in Australia and New Zealand today.

Momento is so much more than a printing company. The three founders, of which Libby is one, came from the world of digital media in the mid 1990s and met when working for a CD-ROM company.

They loved photography, travel and also family memories. Because they couldn’t find a printing company that suited their needs and fulfilled their printing quality requirements, they started their own business, offering exactly this! One of the main focus for them is accuracy in colour reproduction and quality at every level has been their defining feature. They even developed their own book designing software, which is accessible for free.

Interestingly, one of Libby’s first books was her dad’s memoirs, bringing together decades of photos. We can’t but agree when she shares how book creation is about story telling.

We are also talking about different formats and sizes of books, and how to choose the right one. There are different paper options, too, and Libby explains which one is good depending on the purpose and kind of book. She also shares many more practical tips that start long before the book design … namely, when taking photographs!

One of her favourite ways to pass on family history is through recipe books, for which Momento has developed various templates if you don’t want to create your own.

She says: ‘Making a photo book is not just about you, it is also for those people in the future who won’t be sitting beside you when they’re looking through it, who get to learn about you and through learning about you, they learn about themselves.’

Momento offers something for every taste: whether you want to design minimalistic photo books with lots of white space or are a scrapbooker who likes frames, embellishments, background and other decorative features, they’ve got you covered.

Libby encourages us to let the purpose of the book guide us and to turn a book from a record into a keepsake by adding stories.

If you need more inspiration go to https://www.momento.com.au/inspiration and don’t forget that they offer a special to our listeners with

25 % off your next Momento photo book(offer valid until 31 October 2023).

As we are organising photos, we usually like to know what happened when. There is a whole range of information we can gather during that process that can help us to date or place photos. This applies to printed and digital photos.

A great tool to help us gather that information that sometimes randomly comes up during the sorting is a timeline.

Some options to record a timeline are:

  • A simple note book
  • Index cards
  • One sheet per year in a binder
  • An Excel sheet
  • A bubble chart

Links mentioned in this episode:

Our freebie for you! Two simple timeline templates to choose from. Simply go to this link, download your favourite version and print it as often as you like.

The bubble-chart timeline can be found here.

We both have been fortunate enough to travel earlier this year. Like everybody else, we both took lots of photos during that time.

There are many different ways you can manage and also back up digital photos while travelling. However, today we are simply sharing what we both did. Some steps were the same, such as a daily purge in which we deleted the duds and other unwanted photos we took.

Others were a bit different because one used the phone only and the other also used a DSLR camera and had a notebook with her.

Another important part of documenting such wonderful adventures is writing down the stories - or at least some - that go with the photos. Don’t forget to check out Katie’s offering when it comes to that part of the process.

One of the most asked questions when it comes to photo management is: how can I share my photos with others?

As always, it depends on a lot of variables such as the photo management software and computer you are using. However, a great solution, which we have mentioned many times, is SmugMug - a cloud-based sharing software. Today, we talk with Kaydin Carlsen from SmugMug, who has been a passionate advocate for the photography industry for more than a decade and has been supporting and working with professional photo organisers on best practices and workflows for managing photo and video digital assets using SmugMug.

If you have wondered how to share your photos easily after you have managed your collection on your computer, we encourage you to try SmugMug. There is even the added bonus that it is an off-site backup!

Use this link here to get 25% off your first year of any SmugMug account level.

Here are some of the features we like about SmugMug:

  • It is software independent, i.e. it works on Windows PCs and Macs.
  • You can upload photos and videos. Space is unlimited.
  • It keeps metadata you have previously added intact.
  • The files are uploaded in full size. You decide who sees what, it can be totally private.
  • You can invite people to upload their photos to your account (very handy for events!).
  • You can upload an existing folder structure (6 levels).

These are only a few advantages. We invite you to try it out yourself - the first couple of weeks are free! If you want to keep it afterwards, don’t forget you get 25 % off your first year if you use this link to start with.

Also, don’t forget to check out the YouTube playlist How To SmugMug where you find lots of tutorials that will also give you a better visual of how SmugMug looks like.

We see the phone as a camera and we want to transfer new phone photos to a computer and our photo hub regularly. Not only to back them up, but to be able to curate them and our photo collection easily.Today, we are looking at how to transfer those photos from Android phones to a computer. We are sharing a variety of options with you, some require just a USB cable, others an internet / wifi connection or the cloud. One would think that transferring phone photos is easy. It usually is, but there are some things to be aware of. A typical stumbling block are phone settings. Also, many Samsung users are not aware that their phone has an SD card and an internal phone storage, hence photos might be stored in two different places. We cover all those details in this episode for Android users! From all the options, choose the one that seems easiest and most straight forward to you and giving it a go. If it’s not the right one for you, try another one. Once you’ve chosen, write down a step-by-step checklist for yourself. Here are some of the options we are sharing:* SD card (PC and Mac) * USB connection to a PC or a Mac * Using apps you already have on your computer * USB sticks (also listen to our episode 46) * Various apps * Cloud services

Decluttering and organising photos is hard. It can be a very overwhelming and time-consuming task and, naturally, photos belong to the very personal and sentimental belongings. Imagine how much harder it must be for a person who hoards.Unfortunately, there is quite a high part of our population with hoarding disorders, around 5%! However, there is help and we have the pleasure to learn from today’s podcast guests: Angela Esnouf and Wendy Hanes from Hoarding Home Solutions, who are internationally recognised experts in their field. They generously share how friends and family members of people with a hoarding disorder or chronic disorganisation can help and what should be avoided. Some of the tips are:* Leading with compassion and being patient. * Being aware that organising is not a linear process. * There needs to be a readiness for change, which can come and go. * Understanding that - especially for elderly loved ones - photos can be a catalyst to tell their story and that it can help them make sense of their life and their legacy. * Knowing that searching for the perfect solution can be paralysing.

They also share some practical strategies on how we can help a loved one. We believe these strategies work for anybody, not just for people who hoard. You can find more information on Wendy’s and Angela’s website over at: www.hoardinghomesolutions.com.au. There are some free resources for you to download, lots of blog posts to learn from and a directory ‘Find a Provider’ in which you can find a local, trained expert if you’d like further help. You can of course also sign up for one of their courses and dive deeper that way.Sources mentioned in this episode:* Institute for Challenging Disorganization: https://www.challengingdisorganization.org/ * Sandra Pankhurst, author of ‘The Trauma Cleaner’ * Dr Christopher Mogan, The Anxiety & OCD Clinic Melbourne

Do you have any slides in your photo collection? Chances are either you, or your parents, or your grandparents do. These are some of the formats you might have seen;* 120 * 35mm * 35mm Super * 35mm half-frame * 126 * 127 * 110 * Subminiature * Stereo Realist * View-Master Reel

....there are so many! The first slides came on the market in 1901, and there are still some formats in use today!A listener asked us what options are there when it comes to digitising slides. It is no secret that even a quick glance at just one photo and you can open the floodgates to hundreds of memories. We are also very mindful that organising years, and often multiple generations, of photos can inevitably open the floodgates to a whole range of emotions and feelings. In this episode we broach upon the sensitive topic of emotions. We talk about;* the types of photos that could trigger strong emotions, * a wonderful tool created by The Junto Institute called the Emotion & Feeling Wheel, * and most importantly, what you could do when these emotions come flooding in.

While some emotions could be challenging to navigate there are many others that give us the “fuzzies’, as our dear friend Katie mentions in Episode 57 “Story Jotting with Katie”.Listen in to our episode, Prepare for Emotions, to help you as you continue on your photo organising journey.Link mentioned in this week’s episodeThe Junto Institute - The Emotion Wheelhttps://www.thejuntoinstitute.com/emotion-wheels/Do you have a question you would like us to answer?
