That is what we have in Chapter 7, verses 1-12. -When we get to verses 13-28, we will meet with a great invitation, a great exhortation, a great demand, a great decision set before us.-But first, the main ideas are brought to a close.-What is the logical connection between what we've seen so far and these closing statements--I WOULD DESCRIBE IT LIKE THIS.-THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT CLOSES WITH WARNINGS AND GUIDANCE AGAINST HYPOCRISY IN THE REALM OF JUDGMENT -See verse 5-. -AND THE WARNINGS AND GUIDANCE THAT OUR LORD GIVES US WILL SERVE US WELL FOR THE APPLICATION OF THIS TEACHING.-What do we do with these truths that we have been hearing- What kinds of judgments do we form as a result of what we've been taught- -WE DO FORM JUDGMENTS AS WE ARE TAUGHT GOD'S WORD.-The sermon on the mount forces us not just to think about ourselves, but to think about everyone else.-GOD'S WORD FORCES ME TO THINK ABOUT MY OWN SPIRITUAL CONDITION, BUT I'M ALSO FORCED TO THINK ABOUT YOUR SPIRITUAL CONDITION.-THIS ACTUALLY POINTS US TO ANOTHER WAY IN WHICH GOD'S PEOPLE ARE DISTINCT. -GOD'S PEOPLE CARE ABOUT THE SPIRITUAL CONDITION OF OTHER PEOPLE.-BUT we care about others in a way that is LOVING.-It is not examination for the purpose of self-exaltation. It is an examination for the purpose of exhortation and investment. How can I encourage you, how can I help you--We are concerned that other people know the true God, know Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, are doing well spiritually, are in the truth. THIS MATTERS TO US.

Religious moralism and legalism are similar but differ slightly. Moralism tends to reduce the Bible to a manual for moral behavior focusing on proper external behavior and actions. Legalism tends to emphasize a system of rules and regulations from the Bible. But in practice, moralism will look much like legalism. When Christians forget or don't properly understand the Gospel and what Christ has done for them, they can fall prey to either or both of these dangerous, anti-faith, and anti-gospel attitudes and behaviors. How can Christians avoid this kind of error in their homes and churches- How can we be people that are not just heavy-handed on our children or even others when it comes to obeying God- How can parents rightly teach their children about God's character as they also teach His commandments-
Introduction--The sermon on the mount is a sermon full of contrasts. -In the beatitudes, our Lord declared what characterizes those who inherit the kingdom of God. He then goes on to describe the differences between those people and the rest of the world.-His main emphasis is on how they are different from the Jewish religious hypocrites.-But He also declares how they are different from Gentile pagans.-What He declares is the difference between genuine righteousness and empty religion.-That difference is manifested in several categories as you walk through the sermon on the mount.-Different in their relationships with people.-Different in their acts of worship.-Different in what they deem as their treasure.-Different in what they are truly devoted to - God's people serve God not money.-And now, in verse 25, He comes to another.-God's people are different in their trust.-The world of lost humanity doesn't know God and as a result doesn't trust God.-The world is full of worry, full of care, full of fear, full of anxiety, full of self-confidence and self-reliance. It is full of self-effort, self-protection, self-trust.-Not so with God's people.-ESV Psalm 9-10 And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you.-God's people trust our Father and look to Him as the one who takes care of us.-AS WE HAVE SEEN WITH EACH OF THE OTHER AREAS OF DISTINCTION, IT IS TRUE TO SAY THAT GOD'S PEOPLE WILL BE DIFFERENT, AND AT THE SAME TIME SAY, GOD'S PEOPLE MUST BE DIFFERENT.-WE ARE COMMANDED TO BE DIFFERENT-WE ARE TAUGHT TO BE DIFFERENT-WE HAVE THE CAPACITY TO BE DIFFERENT-WE MUST CHOOSE TO BE DIFFERENT.-THE TRUST THAT WE LIVE BY IS A T
Introduction--To live in a way that you don't waste your life requires salvation's sight - it requires healthy spiritual vision.-Look at what you are treasuring, and you find your treasure.-Look at what your treasure is, and you find where you heart has been.-Look at where your heart has been, and you discover the state of your spiritual vision.-That is what our Lord is teaching us here.-We saw the prohibition -vs.19--We saw the prescription -vs.20--We saw the promise -vs.21--And now we see a lesson by analogy in the realm of sight -vs.22-23-, and a lesson by analogy in the realm of service -vs.24-.-I. A LESSON BY ANALOGY IN THE REALM OF SIGHT -vs.22-23--The analogy is a simple one, but an important one. It begins with the body, but its lesson is for the soul.-Let's walk through the analogy.-A. THE HEALTHY EYE -vs.22--The healthy eye is the eye acts like a lamp. As a result, the entire body operates in the light.-Simple enough. The eye is the -lamp- only in the sense that it is by our eyes that light is perceived. If you have a healthy eye, you have vision. Your world is enlightened. The entire body, then, operates in the realm of light. Everything you do with your body is INFORMED by what you can see.-It is because you have a healthy eye that you can cross the street effectively. Move through a room effectively. Identify whom it is that speaks to you. Tell what time of day it is. Pick items and set them down in places where you want to leave them.

In this episode of the Straight Truth Podcast, host Dr. Josh Philpot says that there seems to be this renewed interest by some, who say that Christ ought to be preached from every Scripture. Some say that every verse is about Jesus in one way or another. In Luke 24-27, we read of a conversation Jesus has with two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, Jesus interprets the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures to them. The Psalms are included in these same interpretations when He appears to others in Jerusalem -verse 44 of the same chapter-. But does this mean that every text or verse of the Old Testament speaks about Christ- Dr. Philpot asks Dr. Richard Caldwell if this is how he understands it- He asks, is it important to preach and teach Christ from every text or verse of Scripture-- -Dr. Caldwell responds by saying that he thinks it is important to preach Christ from every part of Scripture. But, he would not agree with the idea that every verse of Scripture refers to Jesus. He believes that this is where preachers and teachers can get into dangerous territory. The Scripture gets allegorized, and the imagination gets preached instead of the actual text. Preachers and teachers need to be faithful to the Scriptures. They need to remind themselves that there is no one more interested in magnifying God's Son than God. God is the One who has given us the Scriptures. The Scriptures are God's self-revelation- they are His special revelation. In them, God has revealed and made Himself through His Word known to mankind. The crescendo of God's special revelation is God's Son. Consequently, it should not surprise us that as God

Introduction--Some of our greatest temptations to DO WRONG come to us when we KNOW we have been DONE WRONG.-The flesh desires to get even. -The flesh desires to respond to others in the way that we have been treated.-We said this morning that the scribes and Pharisees approached righteousness in a way - they read and applied Scripture in a way - that baptized worldliness into their religious system.-All the sins of their world, sinful anger, sexual immorality, a low view of marriage, and deceptive communication, were being excused in the name of God.-And so was the desire that the natural man has to seek his own vengeance.-Payback is what the natural man does.--I'm simply treating you the way you treated me.---If you don't like this, then maybe you should think about the way you're treating me.---I don't get mad, get even.---You better think twice, because you don't know who you're messing with.--You hear these kinds of responses from people.-ALL OF THEM SPEAK OF TIT FOR TAT. -Tit for tat - -An English saying meaning 'equivalent retaliation.'--Jesus addresses that attitude in our verses.-WE ARE REMINDED, BY THIS 5TH EXAMPLE, THAT RIGHTEOUSNESS IS NOT JUST DISTORTED BY A SUPERFICIAL READING OF SCRIPTURE, BY REDUCING THE DEMANDS OF SCRIPTURE, OR BY ADDING TO THE ALLOWANCES OF SCRIPTURE. -RIGHTEOUSNESS IS DISTORTED WHEN WE MISAPPLY THE SCRIPTURES.-Righteousness is distorted when we take a truth meant to be applied in one realm, and then WRONGLY apply it to another realm.-That is the kind of distortion represented in this 5th example.-The scribes and Pharisees used the misapplication of Scripture to justify sinful responses that characterize lost humanity.--I. WHAT THE PEOPLE
Introduction--The best interpreter of Scripture is Scripture. -Sometimes we come to a passage of Scripture that seems like a puzzle. If we take it at face value, based only on what we read in the immediate context, it seems to say something that is conflict with other portions of Scripture.-Whenever that happens, knowing what Scripture is - knowing that it does contradict itself - we begin thinking and comparing with Scripture to arrive at a legitimate understanding of what that puzzling section truly means.-In this case, at face value it seems that Jesus is disallowing ALL taking of vows, ALL swearing of oaths. But we know that Jesus did not come to contradict the Word of God. He is God in human flesh. It is HIS WORD.-He is not contradicting ANY portion of Scripture. -When you consider all of Scripture it is plain to see that there are legitimate uses of vows and oaths. We will see that today. Jesus cannot mean that He opposes that.-When you rule that out and pay careful attention to what Jesus is saying here, what becomes clear is that Jesus is dealing with THE MISUSE of vows. A misuse that involved WHEN a vow should be taken, and HOW a vow should be taken.-Yet even then, when we recognize THAT, I still don't believe that we have gotten to the heart of the issue.-WHAT JESUS TAKES ISSUE WITH IS NOT FIRST AND FOREMOST ABOUT VOWS. IT IS ABOUT SOMETHING THAT VOWS AND OATHS ARE CONCERNED WITH. -What Jesus is concerned with has to do with why people take a vow - why they declare an oath. JESUS IS CONCERNED ABOUT OUR ATTITUDE TOWARD TRUTHFULNESS.-What Jesus demonstrates is that true righteousness is concerned with the truth. -True righteousness is not dishonest.-True righteous

He shares that in the past, pastors have been fired from their congregations for plagiarizing. Yet today, it almost seems like this is a more acceptable thing to do. We are hearing of pastors agreeing with another pastor to share their sermons without telling their church. There is this borrowing, taking, and replicating, of the work and ideas of another pastor, then presenting it and representing it as their own. Is this appropriate- Is it ever a good idea to preach someone else's sermons- Have the men who are doing this or have done this disqualified themselves- Dr. Philpot tells us that Dr. Richard Caldwell has pastored for over 30 years now, working hard to prepare and deliver sermons from the Word of God. This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, Dr. Josh Philpot speaks of the heightened awareness of death that has surrounded us this last year or so. This overt awareness has come primarily due to Covid19 and the deaths associated with it. While it brings a reminder of death, and to some, great fear, we need to remember that death is an ongoing fact of this life, regardless of how or when it comes. As Christians, this is not something of which we are ignorant. The Bible clearly states that death is the result of sin, for the wages of sin is death -Romans 6-23-. As Believers in Christ, we should think differently than the world around us about the loss of life, the expiration of our physical earthly bodies. While we should not be preoccupied with death, we should be mindful of it- we should be prepared and ready, for it can come at any time. In thinking about death, Dr. Philpot asks Dr. Caldwell to share how he would help a church member, or anyone for that matter, to be prepared for death.

They want to know what Jesus means when He uses the word hate and says we cannot be a disciple unless we do so. Introduction--It is good for us to remember that when our Lord made His entrance into the world, there was a fervent zeal for the Messiah, but, for most people, it was misguided.-Many of the Jews in Jesus' time were not looking for a Messiah who would take away their sins, they were looking for a Messiah who would take away their enemies.-There is both biblical and historical evidence that the mindset of many Jews was that they wanted what amounted to a military deliverer. -They wanted someone who would take away the Roman yoke, who would usher in a glorious age of Jewish freedom, and supremacy.-It was not a new world of righteousness that they envisioned. It was the world as it is, with them at the top of the food chain.-THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND THEIR PROBLEM-THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND THEIR NEED-THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND GOD'S GRACE TO THEM AND TO THE WORLD WHEN JOHN THE BAPTIST INTRODUCED JESUS, AND JESUS BEGAN HIS PUBLIC MINISTRY.
Introduction--It is possible for NATURAL people to give great EFFORT in religious activity while they are still dead in their sins.-It is possible to be sincere, careful, exacting, disciplined, principled, consistent - and be far from God, and outside the kingdom of God. Blind to your true problem. Blind to the true solution. So how should we understand this- What is our place as individuals, and what is the Church's place or role regarding justice and righteousness in the culture-

But he has heard this verse from 1 Timothy 2-12 and wonders about it. His thoughts have prompted these questions.
