Frances Bowden Affandy is an anthropologist by academic training and is a marketing specialist in the hospitality industry by professional experience who now teaches Service Marketing courses in Institut Teknologi of Bandung. She has been in Indonesia since the 80s after having moved here from the US with her Indonesian husband. Her husband passed away nearly a decade ago and Frances continues to live in Bandung. She learned that Janda is a loaded terminology and carries many meaning, predominantly negative in context. Her suggestion is to do away from the term Janda, whether widows or divorcees, young or old. A Janda is no more than a single woman. Is it time to retire a term from the Indonesian lexicon? Should widows and divorcees reject the labeling? And advance apologies for Frances' video lag and blue glow. :)

My talk with Frances and our discussion is as follows:

00:00 - Janda is a term devised by men to control the sub-segment of women who are Widows & Divorcees

01:00 - Frances & Tania's anthropology and its uses 06:00 - What does Janda mean? Differences of Widows and Divorcees in Indonesia and in the US

10:06 - Divorce status carried stigmas in the US. Generational changes.

11:51 - Why use Janda at all?

14:00 - Frances: Does your relationships with friendschange being a Janda?

16:00 - Being a Janda is not an insult. Highlights of better role models.

19:00 - Female identities in Indonesia in the use of language, respect for seniority over gender.

21:00 - Indonesian obsession with wealth. What is "hidup berkecukupan?"

25:00 - What are the financial expectations from parents to children?

28:00 - Mothers: To Work or Not To Work? Women's need for continued financial independence

30:00 - Women need more encouragement.

33:00 - Economic disempowerment of married women have kept women in bad marriages for too long.

35:20 - Services Marketing - Marketing the intangibles, like a podcast. :)

Many jump into marriage from the hopes that good intentions alone can suffice to hold the relationship together. And societal pressures to wed, particularly in conservative society like Indonesia, reinforced our episode guest's decision to marry despite having no clear vision and desires from what her married life with her then husband would be. Broken down communication further made it hard for the young marriage to survive.

Our guest is none other than Indonesia's fashion designer Kleting, she is an emotionally conscientious person she delved deep and found meaning and revelations from her divorce and ultimately discovered forgiveness and unconditional love from her self healing.

https://jandabecanda.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Annette-Edit-Final.mp3

Today’s episode is our tribute to Earth Day and on the show we have a creative entrepreneur who founded the eco brand Ibu Bumi, which translates as Mother Earth.

Our guest, Annette Ratman, initially rolled out the brand out of frustration with how toxic modern options can be to care and clean for our bodies, households and even pets. So instead of complaining about it she researched the best traditional alternatives using local ingredients and created the ultra cool Bali-based Ibu Bumi label coupling the best of the old school ways with a modern twist.

Annette predicts for Indonesia the socio-economic impact of the national lockdown would be the return of village-based industries after the halt or disappearance of urban-centered jobs. She attributes this to the resilient nature of Indonesians to quickly adapt in the face of challenges and creatively respond.

This is our second to last show this season and we will take a break and pick up again in February 2020!

I am so excited for today’s guests because we welcome my 12-year-old daughter Paloma and 11-year-old niece Shakira who are aspiring Youtubers on their journey of growing their followers.

I wanted to put a finger on the pulse of what motivates them to dedicate their time on developing a social media presence. Apart from plain fun, they see the skills involved in growing a fan base as a necessity for their generation. Full of irreverent wit they mistakenly label anyone old as "Boomers," and sheds an interesting viewpoint that to the young, old is just old.*

Life is a blank slate for them and they are already making headway on developing their creativity, technological skills as well as plenty of self reflection on what truly makes them happy.

Without further ado I bring you Paloma and Shakira or as you will soon know them as Sushi Nooshie.

*NB: In case you're wondering, I'm no Boomer but definitively a minted Gen Xer, :)

It has become increasingly rare to find couples who stay content with their marriages and it is a delight to see my old friend stay in love with the woman in his life whom simultaneously he views as his girlfriend, wife and mother of his children. Such adoration and care he showed when speaking of his true partner in life and how she had claimed that "irreplaceable" spot in his heart.

He loves running and the running community loves him back for his easygoing and encouraging approach in connecting with other runners. Don't let the carefree approach fool you of the driven and ambitious man this former reporter has for his hobby of running which he pursues with deep commitment and develops into a second career following his retirement from journalism.

His ambition is for recreational sports to develop in Indonesia as part of sports tourism. Let's hear the story and vision of my dear friend Agus "Abah Ush" Hermawan.

I am always curious on how people end up in the profession that they’re in. Was it chance, destiny or pure dumb luck. Or all of them?

In this episode of Janda Becanda we look at one woman’s entrepreneurial journey from what began as a simple frustration wanting a simple catalog of readily available furniture choices for her home that turned into a full-fledged e-commerce business of well curated pieces from a range of international and local furniture brands.

Michelle Halim speaks plainly of her struggles starting the e-commerce store Jellyspace.co from zero to a robust and growing service in a short three years. Her charm is in her humble and quietly giddy approach to tackling the big and small problems.

The episode looks at the importance of role models and mentors particularly in the early stages of one’s career. Every bit beguiling and enchanting, Putri Minangsari shares her story of her pure love for dancing. She is a world performing Balinese dancer and teacher but ultimately a lifelong student of the arts.

She is a staunch advocate for the preservation of traditional Indonesian culture through dance, painting and fashion. The default poster girl for traditional chic in modern Indonesia.

Just as she wears traditional kebaya daily she lives her life with effortless ease. A disarming quality from a seemingly ambitious and driven character which adds to her charm.
