When it comes to purchasing tools for construction or anyother DIY projects, both discount tool retailers and big box stores have theiradvantages and disadvantages. Here's a comparison to help you decide whichoption might be better for your needs:
Discount Tool Retailers:
SpecializedSelection: Discount tool retailers often focus exclusively on tools andequipment, offering a wide range of products from various brands. They may havea more specialized selection compared to big box stores, which might bebeneficial if you're looking for specific or high-quality tools.
LowerPrices: As the name suggests, discount tool retailers typically offer lowerprices compared to big box stores. They may achieve these lower prices throughbulk purchasing, direct sourcing, or by operating with lower overhead costs.
KnowledgeableStaff: Some discount tool retailers employ staff who are knowledgeable abouttools and their uses. They can provide valuable advice and assistance inselecting the right tool for your needs.
Focus onProfessionals: Discount tool retailers often cater to professional contractorsand tradespeople, so they may carry a broader range of professional-grade toolsand equipment. This can be advantageous if you require tools for heavy-duty orcommercial use.
Big Box Stores:
Convenience:Big box stores like Home Depot, Lowe's, or Walmart are ubiquitous andconvenient to access. They typically have large, well-organized stores withample parking, making them convenient for quick tool purchases or browsing.
One-StopShopping: Big box stores offer a wide range of products beyond just tools, including building materials, home appliances, and home improvement supplies. This can be convenient if you need to purchase other items along with yourtools.
PriceMatching: Some big box stores offer price matching policies, where they matchor beat the prices of their competitors, including discount tool retailers. This can allow you to get competitive prices without sacrificing convenience.
Warrantyand Returns: Big box stores often have generous return policies and may offerextended warranties on certain products. This can provide peace of mind knowingthat you can easily return or exchange a tool if it doesn't meet yourexpectations.
In summary, if you're looking for specialized tools, lowerprices, and knowledgeable staff, a discount tool retailer may be the betteroption. On the other hand, if convenience, one-stop shopping, and flexiblereturn policies are important to you, then a big box store might be thepreferred choice. Ultimately, it depends on your specific needs, budget, andpreferences.

In this episode the Handyman Pros have a discussion aboutEvery Door Direct.
Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) is a service offered by theUnited States Postal Service (USPS) that allows businesses to send targetedmarketing materials to specific neighborhoods or ZIP codes without needing alist of addresses. Instead of addressing each piece individually, businessescan select postal routes and have their mail pieces delivered to everyhousehold along those routes.
Here's how the EDDM service generally works:
Targeting:Businesses can use USPS's online mapping tool to select specific postal routesbased on factors like demographics, household size, income, and age. Thisallows them to target the areas that are most likely to be interested in theirproducts or services.
Design:Once the desired postal routes are selected, businesses can design their mailpieces according to USPS specifications. These specifications include size, weight, and layout requirements. The USPS website provides templates andguidelines to ensure compliance.
Printing:After designing the mail pieces, businesses need to get them printed. Manyprinting companies offer EDDM services and can handle both the printing andmailing aspects of the campaign.
Preparation:Before mailing, the mail pieces need to be bundled and prepared according toUSPS regulations. This typically involves bundling them by postal route andcompleting the necessary paperwork.
Delivery:Once prepared, the mail pieces are delivered to the appropriate USPS facilityfor distribution. The USPS then delivers the mail to every household along theselected postal routes.
Cost: EDDMcan be a cost-effective way to reach a large number of potential customerssince it eliminates the need for purchasing mailing lists and allows fordiscounted postage rates.
Overall, EDDM is a convenient and affordable option forbusinesses looking to reach a targeted audience within a specific geographicarea. It's particularly popular among small businesses, local restaurants, realestate agents, and other entities that want to promote their products orservices to nearby residents.

The Handyman Pros have a discussion about putting business cards in someone's yard without their explicit permission and why it is generally not advisable; several reasons:
Intrusiveness:Placing business cards in someone's yard without their consent can be seen as intrusive and disrespectful of their property. It may be perceived as an unwelcome intrusion into their personal space, leading to negative feelingstowards your business.
Unsolicited Advertising: Many people consider unsolicited advertising materials, such asbusiness cards left in yards, to be spam-like behavior. This can create a negative impression of your business and may even result in complaints from homeowners or neighborhood associations.
EnvironmentalConcerns: Business cards left in yards can contribute to littering and environmental pollution if they are not disposed of properly. This goes againstprinciples of environmental responsibility and sustainability.
PotentialLegal Issues: Depending on local regulations, distributing advertising materials like business cards without permission may be prohibited or subject to fines. It's important to familiarize yourself with relevant laws and regulations before engaging in such practices.
Low Effectiveness: Placing business cards in yards is a passive and untargeted marketing approach. It relies on chance encounters rather than targetedoutreach to potential customers who are more likely to be interested in your products or services. As a result, the return on investment (ROI) for thismarketing tactic is often low.
Instead of placing business cards in yards withoutpermission, the Pros discuss how businesses should focus on more targeted and permission-based marketing strategies. This could include digital marketing, social media advertising, direct mail campaigns to targeted mailing lists, or networking within the community through events and local partnerships. These approaches are more likely to yield positive results and build a stronger, moreengaged customer base

The Handyman Pros came on several situations at jobs this week that needed to be addressed. Most of these situations had to do with contractors not thinking a job through.
An example is when floor tile is installed and the tile installer ends up tiling in the dishwasher (the tile raises the floor height, dishwasher cannot be removed without lifting the counter top off of the cabinets).
The Handyman Pros discuss this and other issues including plumbing and electrical locations, use cases, pedestal sinks and more.

The cost of running appliances in your home can vary depending on factors such as energy efficiency, usage patterns, and local utility rates. However, some appliances generally tend to consume more energy and can be more expensive to run. Here are some examples:
To reduce energy costs, consider investing in energy-efficient appliances, using appliances during off-peak hours, and practicing energy-saving habits such as turning off lights and unplugging electronics when not in use. Additionally, conducting a home energy audit can help identify specific areas where you can improve energy efficiency.

Larry spent a whole Sunday clearing a drain clog in a sewer line at a rental house. This is the story and how to prevent these types of problems.
Flushing certain items down the drain can lead to clogs, plumbing issues, and environmental problems. Here are the top five things that homeowners should avoid flushing down the drain:
1.Grease and Cooking Oils:
oPouring grease and cooking oils down the drain might seem convenient, but they can solidify and cause blockages in your pipes over time. Instead, let them cool and solidify in a container, then dispose of them in the trash.
2.Flushable Wipes:
oDespite the label "flushable," many wipes do not break down as easily as toilet paper and can contribute to blockages in sewage systems. It's better to dispose of them in the trash.
3.Paper Towels and Tissues:
oWhile toilet paper is designed to break down in water, paper towels and tissues are more durable and can cause clogs in pipes. Dispose of them in the trash rather than flushing them.
4.Medications:
oFlushing expired or unused medications down the drain can contribute to water pollution and harm aquatic ecosystems. Instead, participate in a medication take-back program or follow proper disposal guidelines provided by local authorities.
5.Dental Floss:
oDental floss is not biodegradable and can contribute to clogs. It can also wrap around and damage plumbing components. Dispose of dental floss in the trash.
Remember, the best way to prevent plumbing issues is to be mindful of what goes down the drain. If you're unsure about the flushability of an item, it's generally safer to dispose of it in the trash. Regular maintenance, such as using drain screens and scheduling professional inspections, can also help prevent costly plumbing problems.

I have a client whose child loves to study bugs. The problem is, he brings them into the house. I was asked to build aworkbench that could sit outside on the deck giving this young man a place to work. A build project was born
Building a children's workbench can be a fun and educational project that can provide your child with a creative space for various activities. This is a quick build and one that can easily be done as a last minute Christmas present.
Here are some tips tohelp you build a safe and functional children's workbench:
Safety First:
Use child-safe materials: Ensure that all materials used are non-toxic and free of sharp edges or harmful chemicals.
Rounded edges: Sand down and round off any sharp edges or corners to prevent accidents.
Appropriate Size:
Make the workbench at an appropriate height for your child, ensuring they can comfortably reach and work on it. A good rule of thumb is to make it about waist height for your child.
Consider your child's age and size when determining the dimensions of the workbench.
Simple Design:
Keepthe design simple and age-appropriate. A basic table or bench with a flat working surface is a good starting point.
As your child grows and gains more skills, you can add features like shelves, drawers, and tool racks.
Sturdy Construction:
Use strong and durable materials such as solid wood or plywood for the workbench to ensure stability.
Secure all joints and connections properly to prevent wobbling or collapsing.
Non-SlipSurface:
Usea non-slip surface for the workbench top, such as rubber or textured material,to help keep projects in place and reduce the risk of accidents.
Child-Sized Tools:
Provide your child with child-sized tools, such as a small hammer, screwdriver, and aset of safety goggles. These tools should be easy to handle and safe for children to use.
Organizationand Storage:
Include storage space or a pegboard for organizing tools and materials. This helps teach your child about keeping a tidy workspace.
Use clear containers for storing small parts and supplies so they can easily see and access their materials.
Personalization:
Allowyour child to personalize their workbench by painting or decorating it withtheir favorite colors and designs.
Supervision:
Alwayssupervise your child while they're using the workbench, especially if they areusing tools or materials that may pose a safety risk.
Teach Proper Usage:
Take the time to teach your child how to use tools safely and provide guidance on the specific projects they can work on.
Encourage Creativity:
Make the workbench a space for creativity, where your child can work on arts andcrafts, small woodworking projects, or any other hands-on activities.
Maintenance:
Periodically check the workbench for wear and tear, and make any necessary repairs or adjustments as your child continues to use it.
Remember that the primary goal of a children's workbench is to provide a safe and educational space for your child to explore their interests and develop theirskills. It's essential to tailor the workbench to your child's age and abilities, and to create a supportive environment for learning and creativity.

The term "McMansion" refers to a type of large, ostentatious, and often architecturally uninspired suburban home that became popular in the United States during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. These homes are typically characterized by their excessive size, gaudy design elements, and a lack of architectural coherence. The rise of McMansions can be attributed to several factors:
However, the popularity of McMansions has waned over the years for various reasons:
In recent years, there has been a shift towards more thoughtful and sustainable housing designs, with an emphasis on quality over quantity. As a result, the era of the McMansion has, to some extent, given way to a new emphasis on more modest and environmentally conscious home construction and design.

The Handyman Pros Radio Show has been asupporter of decreasing the trades gap. There's a massive shortage of qualified tradespeople. From truck drivers to phlebotomists, the U.S. faces a massive skills gap in the blue-collar jobs that make our economy function.
Classet was founded to improve the massive skills gap and the challenge to find true upward mobility in the blue collar space. We believe everyone should have access to a quality, economically sustainable, and rewarding career. We want to help make that a reality.
An Interview was born.
What is the trade skills gap?
The trade skills gap, also known as the skills gap in the trades or vocational skills gap, refers to a significant disparity between the skills and qualifications that job seekers possess and the skills that employers in various trade or vocational industries require. This gap arises when there are not enough individuals with the necessary skills and training to fill job openings in trades-related professions. These professions often include skilled trades suchas electricians, plumbers, carpenters, welders, HVAC technicians, and other technical or vocational roles.
Key features of the trade skills gap include:
To address the trade skills gap, various initiatives are often put in place. These can include vocational training programs, apprenticeships, education and industry partnerships, and efforts to attract and retain workers in trade-related careers. Encouraging individuals to pursue careers in the trades and providing them with the necessary training and support is essential for bridging the skills gap and ensuring a skilled workforce in these important sectors.

Whenit comes to your home, there's no denying that some parts age more gracefullythan others. While we'd all love for our homes to remain in pristine conditionindefinitely, the reality is that various components have finite lifespans.Understanding the expected lifespan of different home components can help youplan for maintenance, replacements, and renovations. Roofing:
o Expected lifespan: 20-30years (asphalt shingles), 50+ years (metal or tile)
The roof is yourhome's first line of defense against the elements. Asphalt shingles are themost common roofing material, and they typically last around 20-30 years. However, metal or tile roofs can far outlast this estimate, often exceeding 50years or more with proper care.
Tip: Regular roof inspectionsand maintenance can help identify and address issues early, prolonging yourroof's life.
Windows:
o Expected lifespan: 20-30years (vinyl), 30-50 years (wood)
