When you hear news of distant family or friends embroiled in disagreements how do you respond? Join me again with the apostle Paul in the great city of Ephesus in 55ad. As we saw yesterday Paul was experiencing both a wonderful response to his proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus in Ephesus, as well as great opposition from many people who rejected what Paul presented and they wanted Paul silenced! I explained to you yesterday that Ephesus was experiencing a great spiritual war as both Satan and Jesus battled for the soul of that city, one person at a time. Yesterday we met a man named Apollos. He was an intelligent scholar, well-grounded in Old Testament Scriptures and a remarkably gifted communicator. He had come to Ephesus from Alexandria, Egypt. (Acts 18:24) It appears it didn’t take long for him to earn both a hearing and a following. The problem was Apollos was only PARTIALLY right in his teachings about the Bible and especially about Jesus. While Apollos was evidently convinced that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah, he did not understand the full Gospel of salvation by faith in Jesus, nor the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians.(Click here to see full text, images and links)

We understand that each of us builds our personal reputation every day, right? So, when your name is mentioned, what reputation descriptive words come immediately into the minds of people? Will you be satisfied to leave your reputation as it is, or are there some changes you’d like to make in the remaining time you have to live? Of course, none of us knows when our time will run out and we’ve written the final words of our life story, right? That is why the apostle Paul was led by the Holy Spirit to write about this issue of personal reputation in the fourth chapter of his first letter to his Christian friends in the Macedonian city of Thessalonica.(Click here to see full text, images and links)

This is normally a special weekend of transition as our world enters the Christmas frenzy! For the next four weeks almost everything, almost everywhere, incessantly, will have a Christmas flavor and for the most part that will have little to do with Jesus Christ or God’s purpose in sending God the Son to earth! It will have everything to do with economics and the pursuit of personal happiness! (Click here to see full text, images and links)

For us in America, politics is an all too frequent hot topic, especially in recent months. The same is true in Israel, and yesterday I left you in a tragic political moment. The tribal elders had rejected Samuel’s sons and called Samuel to find them a human KING! Their words are historic and cataclysmic in significance: “We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations…” (1 Samuel 8:19,20) (Click here to see full text, images and links)

Leadership transitions are always delicate and potentially dangerous times, be it in a nation, a business, an organization or even a family. For the Israelites, the transition from Moses to Joshua was smooth and successful. Moses made it clear Joshua was God’s selection and Joshua stayed the course of Moses’ leadership style making sure he carefully discerned God’s direction, and then Joshua faithfully led the Israelites in obedience to God. On this the first Monday of 2025 the whole world wonders what this year will bring, to every nation, every city, every family, every person. World leaders, of course, are watching closely as two weeks from today a new American President and his leadership team assume responsibility to lead the free world. Debris piles everywhere… is what the pictures I have seen lately show me of North Carolina and Florida and Gaza and parts of Beirut and southern Lebanon and hundreds of cities in Ukraine. Death and destruction are happening in so many places around our world that it almost takes our breath away, doesn’t it? That’s how it seemed for people living in Israel 2700 years ago when the prophet Isaiah received and wrote down this brief, powerful message of HOPE from God: “Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor His ear too dull to hear.” (Is. 59:1)(Click here to see full text, images and links)

As you reflect back over your lifetime, what has been the most outrageous, hard to believe event that you’ve witnessed or even heard about? Was it a tragedy or a wonderful miracle of great good for many people? Come with me again, back to Jerusalem, about 701bc for one of the most amazing, hard to believe events of all time. If you’ve been on the journey with us recently you know King Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem had been taunted by a vast army and an arrogant Sennacherib, emperor of the Assyrian empire, who was intent on conquering Jerusalem and the southern kingdom of Judah. As you think back over your lifetime, you probably have some key events which are very significant for you. You remember exactly where you were when it happened. If you are of the “builder generation” perhaps it’s the news of Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, or maybe if you’re of the “boomer generation” it was the assassination of President John Kennedy, November 22, 1963? Or if you are a ‘millennial’ it is September 11, 2001 and the jet plane attacks of the Twin Towers in NYC and the Pentagon in Washington, DC? If you live in another country of the world there are probably major events in your country which have marked your life. Today, let’s return back to Jerusalem, Israel for a major event which shaped the lives of many people and Biblical history. (Click here to see full text, images and links)

We’ve all heard the phrase ‘separation of Church & State’. I wonder what it means to you, wherever you live in our world in 2024. Many countries in these days are experiencing national elections. Mexico has just elected their first woman president and did you know she has Jewish heritage? The Times of Israel reported of the new Mexican president: “Sheinbaum, a physicist turned politician, was born to Jewish immigrants from Lithuania and Bulgaria. She does not describe herself as Jewish but has said that both her parents were “of Jewish origin.” Like many Mexican Jews, she takes a secular approach to her faith.” https://www.timesofisrael.com/exit-polls-show-jewish-candidate-sheinbaum-set-to-become-mexicos-1st-woman-president/(Click here to see full text, images and links)

Have you ever found yourself in a ‘no-win’ situation? Did you look around at all the options you could imagine, yet it seemed they would all end in disaster? I think that’s exactly what Elisha and his servant might have felt that morning as they stepped out of their house early to greet a new day, only to discover they were surrounded on all sides by armed soldiers and chariots intent on harming them! There was no escape, no way out! (2 Kings 6:15) But then God gave His prophet Elisha miraculous spiritual vision which enabled him to see what was there but was invisible to normal human eyes. In fact in response to Elisha’s prayer, God gave the same miraculous, spiritual eyesight to Elisha’s servant and both of them stood there amazed that all around those enemy soldiers were horses and chariots of fire! I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “from bad to worse”. Perhaps you’ve watched it happen in a relationship or a business or the moral implosion of a nation. Let’s go back to Israel in about 870bc and let’s look closely at how the ‘northern kingdom’ Israel, under the leadership of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, ‘went from bad to worse’. Do you understand the power of ENCOURAGEMENT? Bullies have been a problem since the earliest days of neighborhoods and childhood playgrounds, and perhaps as you think back to your young years the word ‘bully’ brings up painful memories of some kid bigger than you picking on you. I don’t need to remind you that this is an election year in America. Last year the world was amazed as we watched the death of Queen Elizabeth and installation of Charles as King in England. Come with me again back to ancient Israel and let’s see how they handled leadership transitions and what we can learn from it today. In recent days in “Walking with Jesus” we’ve watched the united Kingdom of Israel, under the reigns of King David and then King Solomon, divide into two rival kingdoms. “Judah” was the name of the “southern kingdom” with its capital Jerusalem and “Israel” was the name of the “northern kingdom” with its capital Samaria. This division occurred at the death of King Solomon, when his son King Rehoboam assumed the throne of “Judah“; and his rival, King Jeroboam set up his throne over “Israel” in Samaria. Oh my so much has happened in our world during this month of April. History is being written every day isn’t it? In addition to wars and political turmoil, if you look at these past weeks from a religious or spiritual perspective, we have walked through RAMADAN (Muslim month of fasting & prayer) and EASTER (Christian celebration of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection) and PASSOVER (Jewish celebration of God’s deliverance of their ancestors from slavery in Egypt). More than 3 Billion people in the world have engaged in very significant religious traditions this month, while at the very same time, the place in the world, to which all three of these great religious events point, is embroiled in warfare… again! But even more exciting is to hear the life stories of the people we haven’t seen in so long. Would ‘transformation’ be a fair word to use as we contemplate how much we’ve changed in several decades? If you're about 30 years old or older, you remember the shock the world was in 22 years ago today, the 12 of September, right? Smoke was billowing up from New York City as both gigantic towers of the World Trade center had collapsed after being hit by two different commercial airplanes which had been hijacked. Thousands of people were dead, the global economic markets were in 'free fall', and a new word, "terrorist", was suddenly being heard on every news broadcast around the world. Also, names of places like Afghanistan and Pakistan, which most people of the world knew little about, were front page headline countries. Everything was changing so fast even 24-hour news organizations could not keep pace and feed the world accurate, fresh news. I wonder where you were when you first heard the news. What emotions did you feel? What thoughts did you have? How did it affect you that week, 22 years ago?

I've now been in Israel a full week with a group of friends, visiting a variety of Biblical sites. It's summertime here in Israel so the weather is warm, perhaps some would say hot, the sky is cloudless blue all day, the sun is bright and can give you a good burn in one day. The air is dry, rain is extremely rare this time of year. I was last here 10 years ago and I am amazed at the changes, the growth, the increase in everything! As I've walked the streets, ridden in the tour bus from place to place, visited many Biblical sites, there's a powerful Old Testament chapter of God's promises which I'm sure for centuries seemed ridiculous, outrageous, impossible... but I see it happening today, now in the land of Israel. God's promises are being fulfilled; I've seen it with my own eyes. And I'm recording this in Jerusalem, so if you hear buses or cars outside, it's an example of this!(Click here to see full text, images and links) Today's Scripture is Ezekiel 36. Every town and city have a history, would you agree? I wonder what you know about the story of your city. Of course, there's a business history, an educational history, and a political history for every town, but I'm asking about the SPIRITUAL history of your town. What has God done over the years, the decades, even the centuries of your city?
Today, I am awakening in Jerusalem, Israel, along with 44 other pilgrims and we are spending 10 days experiencing the places of the Bible together. I thought it might be interesting for us to take a break from Paul's letter to the Corinthians and allow me to invite you to join us in Israel, at least through "Walking with Jesus". Would you like that?

Through our childhood and growing up years we all had our favorite adults, didn't we? Our favorite teachers, favorite coaches, favorite adult relatives, favorite athletes or musicians, maybe even favorite spiritual leaders, be they Rabbi, Priest, Pastor or Imam. Is that true for you today as an adult? We are with the apostle Paul as he has begun writing his first of two letters to the Christians in Corinth in late 54ad. Paul is in Ephesus and word has come to him that there are some problems in Corinth among these Christians and one of the issues is division motivated by the people having different favorite spiritual leaders.

DISTRACTIONS are a very real part of my day, every day, how about you? It's the reality of the busy, noisy world in which we live, right? So, what do you do about them? What are some of your best practices for dealing with distractions so you can keep your mind clear, your eyes focused on the road ahead, your ears alert to what you need to hear, and your heart undivided. Do you remember David wrote this powerful verse which I repeat to myself often when I sense that I'm getting distracted: "Teach me Your way O LORD and I will walk in Your truth. Give me an undivided heart that I may fear Your name. I will glorify Your name forever." (Ps. 86:11)(Click here to see full text, images and links) Today's Scripture is Acts 16:16-18. Are you a person who loves water? I mean lakes or oceans or rivers type of water. This weekend I left you standing on the riverbank of a river outside the city of Philippi in the region of Macedonia, toward the beginning of the year 50ad. We weren't there alone, for we had followed the apostle Paul, Silas, Timothy and Dr. Luke. Why to a river? Because it was the Sabbath and normally Paul would always seek out the Synagogue of a new town on the Sabbath, seeking the opportunity to speak there as a former Pharisee and then introduce the Gospel of Jesus the Messiah. But for the first time, on this Paul's second missionary journey, Paul and his team had reached a large city, to which God had led them, but there was no Synagogue, or at least Paul had not yet found it. You and I live in a world which can be very difficult, challenging, disappointing and even painful, right? We all need to develop methods to protect our hearts and minds from deep discouragement or even despair. I wonder what works for you. We are surrounded by people who turn to drugs or alcohol or other addictive things to numb their pain, and we all see the ravaging effects which are destroying millions of lives, families and entire cities. No matter where you live in the world, no matter the type of government of your country, our world is increasingly a dysfunctional place to live, do you agree? May I begin with a question today? Have you ever received a message from God which seemed simply too good to be true and then life got more difficult for you? Join me again today on a barren hillside in the area today known as Saudi Arabia. Moses is there with his flock of sheep, about the year 1450bc. A bush is on fire and Moses is standing there, bare foot, having taken off his sandals for this sacred, amazing encounter with God. I say he's standing but considering what he is experiencing as the voice of God is speaking to Moses from that burning bush, perhaps Moses is kneeling by now or maybe laying prostrate, flat on his face.

I wonder how many of you have ever served as a lifeguard at the beach or a swimming pool? Or perhaps some of you have served as 'first responders', trained to be among the first people to come to the aid of someone whose life is at risk. In both cases often seconds count and both your words and actions are vital if you will save the person from death. Paul the apostle is nearing the end of the first of his many letters. This one, which we know as Galatians, Paul is writing to Gentile Christians in central Asia as confusion has come through the contrary teachings of some teachers who followed Paul after he left the towns he and Barnabas had visited. Word had come to Paul in Syrian Antioch that some of those who had believed Paul's Gospel and trusted in Jesus for their salvation, were now doubting the truthfulness of Paul's words and some were turning away from what they had believed.

May I invite you to return with me to Syrian Antioch and the little house where Paul is writing his first letter we today know as Galatians, in our Bible. I left you yesterday reflecting on one very, very powerful statement which Paul wrote: "When the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive the full rights of sons." (Gal. 4:4,5) Today let's dig into the last phrase of that powerful statement.

Do you know anyone with wild emotional swings depending on the circumstances of life? Do you also know people who are very constant, stable in their emotions? These days we're watching and listening as James the apostle is writing his letter of encouragement and exhortation to the first century Jewish Jesus followers scattered all across the Roman Empire. These dear people lived during a very difficult time of persecution and thus emotions were always in flux and sometimes explosive. Come on, let's join a few others who've gathered in James' little house in Jerusalem as he writes. He's in his fourth chapter as he picks up his stylus: "Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Come near to God and He will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded." (James 4:7,8)

For many of you today is a holiday from work and school. I hope it's a great day for you. The purpose of this holiday has long been forgotten as most people simply enjoy it as a great three-day weekend transitioning from summer to fall. But as you perhaps know, this day was declared a holiday to celebrate an important aspect of our God design as human beings. God designed humanity with the desire and even passion to WORK, to accomplish things, to improve things, and then the desire to work TOGETHER to accomplish more than we can alone! Now of course Labor Day has never been a religious holiday nor a day of worship. Organizers of this holiday have made it about celebrating the accomplishments of mankind through our hard work. But here and now I want to declare that Labor Day is fundamentally a celebration of what God did in the Garden of Eden when He created the first human Adam and put him in the garden. Genesis 2:15 says "The LORD God took the man [Adam] and put him in the Garden of Eden to WORK it and take care of it." Amen my friends, I hope that gives you a fresh perspective on this day called Labor Day!

I wonder how many of you have pets and how long you've worked at taming or training those animals? Perhaps we could apply the question even to children: how long and hard have we adults worked to train and even tame the behavior and mouths of our children or grandchildren? Welcome back to our time with the apostle James as he is writing the first letter going out from the apostles to the early Christians about 20 years after Jesus has left Jerusalem returning to heaven. James was a brother to Jesus, growing up in the same home, and yet James rejected the notion that Jesus was anything other than a normal older brother. It seemed preposterous to James that Jesus might somehow be God in the flesh, even when James began hearing of miracles and Jesus' powerful messages.

When you watch people interacting with each other, I wonder what convinces you that a person is married and that they love their spouse? Is it the ring on their finger? Do they have their marriage license framed and hanging on the wall of their home? Or is it the words they speak about their spouse when their spouse is NOT present, or the way they speak to their spouse when they are together in public? Or is it that they hold hands as they are walking in public places, or does the husband open the door for his wife and allow her to pass through the doorway first? Or is it that she prepares his meals and washes his clothes? So, what is it my friends? So, here's a bigger question: what is the evidence and the measurement of the love for and the relationship a person has with God?

Yesterday I left you sitting in a room with one of the apostles of Jesus named James. Perhaps you remember James and Jesus had a unique relationship... they were siblings! Yes, James was the son of Mary and Joseph, born sometime after Jesus, so everyone understood them to be brothers. From what we know James did NOT believe Jesus was who He claimed to be, nor did he evidently believe the preposterous stories his parents told him about Jesus' birth... at least not while Jesus was alive. But everything changed with Jesus' resurrection! James could not deny the clear evidence...

I wonder what you feel when you see someone being shown either favoritism or disrespect? Sadly, it happens all too often in every part of the world. A phrase that has been coined in the recent past is 'type casting'. You understand, don't you? It's when prejudice is evident in the manner a person is being treated and people presume it is because they appear to be of a particular ethnicity or socio-economic class, or they are dressed in a particular way, or they speak a particular language, or they have tattoos or piercings, or their hair is dyed a fluorescent color or is dreadlocks.

Our title, "Walking with Jesus" is rooted in my wondering what it would have been like to walk along those dusty roads with Jesus and His disciples. Or a few years later with Paul and his traveling companions. That's where we are today. Paul and Barnabas concluded their time on Cyprus Island where they had begun their courageous proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus even including a powerful blinding confrontation with Elymas the sorcerer who tried to turn Sergius Paulus the proconsul away from God's truth. A change of mind and heart can be a very important event, can't it? In our journey with Barnabas, Saul who had changed his name to Paul, and John Mark, we saw yesterday that the proconsul of Cyprus Island, Mr. Sergius Paulus changed his mind and accepted the Gospel as he heard it from them. We have no record of how that affected the growth of the Jesus movement on Cyprus Island, but we should assume it was significant.

Did you ever have the chance, as a teenager or young adult, of being invited by an adult you respected to travel on an adventure with them? If so, did you accept the invitation and how did that trip affect your life? Today, let's join an adventure exactly like that and see what happened, and what we can learn. Do you remember yesterday we watched the apostle Peter standing in a dark street at night, knocking on the door of a house, anxiously hoping an answer would come soon? Peter was frightened! In most periods of 'transition' into a new job or joining the military or other similar major life transitions, there is often an orientation process to help you learn a new culture, new value systems, sometimes even a new language. A fairly modern term for this is 'onboarding'. It means helping a newcomer fit as quickly as possible into their new group or assignment or location. Yesterday I left you with a large group of people experiencing all the adjustments of transition as they had trusted Jesus to be their Savior and were 'onboarding' into a rapidly expanding group of Jesus followers. In fact, they were the first wave in the "Jesus movement" which would sweep across the Roman empire in the first century and eventually all around the world... to where YOU live today! Dr. Luke gives us the record of those days in Acts 2.

As we are working our way through the famous prayer Jesus used as an example for His disciples when teaching them about the power and reality of PRAYER conversation with God Almighty, we've come to this statement: "And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil." (Matt. 6:13) Now I wonder what that means to you my friends, wherever you live in cities and towns all around our world? Since this prayer is being offered up TO God, does the first part of the statement seem strange? Would God ever lead us INTO temptation? If so, why? If not, was this just a poor choice of words by Jesus?

Sometimes people are famous for what they have accomplished, other times they are famous for what they said. Jesus Christ is famous for BOTH, would you agree? The past two days we've been eavesdropping in on one of the most famous conversations of all time. It was held at night, in an unexpected encounter between Jesus, a newcomer on the public stage, and Nicodemus, a high-ranking, well-known scholar and Jewish leader in Jerusalem. Their conversation is very famous and recorded for us in the Bible in John 3.

When you hear the word "FAMILY" I wonder what comes to your mind? How many generations do you think of when you hear the word "FAMILY"?
