Resurrection Sunday, or Easter, celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, three days after His crucifixion. This miraculous event is the cornerstone of Christian faith, symbolizing victory over sin and death and the promise of eternal life for believers. It is a day of joy, hope, and renewal for all.
Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem, where crowds greeted Him with palms and shouts of "Hosanna!" This day marks the beginning of Holy Week, symbolizing Jesus' acceptance of His path to the cross, as He enters the city as a king, yet humble, riding on a donkey. This week kicks off our Summer Speaker Series. Hear the word of God as it comes forth from Pastor Omar Barlow, the Community Outreach Pastor here at NCCOP!
The promise of the Father was realized on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples as they were in one place, on one accord. They received power to be witnesses of Jesus Christ, and devout men from every nation under heaven heard them speaking in a language that each of them could understand. The people who gathered in Jerusalem gathered and had understanding, in stark contrast to those who gathered to build the Tower of Babel. God confused their language and scattered them abroad (see Genesis 11:6-9)
May Pentecost fully come in our generation so that every nation under heaven can experience the power of God. Father we desire to see that which was spoken by the prophet Joel — But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream dreams. And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy. I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath: Blood and fire and vapor of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD. And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the LORD Shall be saved.’ Acts 2:16-21
We overcome the weakness of the flesh by walking in the Spirit. What does it mean to walk in the Spirit? It means to live a life (lifestyle) that is informed by the Spirit of God. This happens by conviction when we step into areas not approved by God. There will always be a constant struggle between the flesh and the Spirit because they are contrary to one another. The good news is that God has given us the victory through Jesus Christ our Lord!
For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. So I find this law at work: Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! Romans 7:19-25 (NIV)

Our best intentions acted upon in the flesh are doomed to miss the mark. Because God is a Spirit, and those who worship Him, must do so in spirit and in truth. Therefore, we must watch and pray as we present our bodies, as a living sacrifice; this is the only way our offerings to God are acceptable.
Let us offer to God our reasonable service today, and let us not conform to this world, but make today a day of transformation by the renewal of our minds.
Jesus suffered great injustice as he was mocked, spat upon and beaten all night before being delivered to Pilate the governor of Rome. He was delivered into the hands of the Roman government by the very people that He came to save. In the name of religion He was sent to be crucified under the tyranny of an unjust system.
The good news is that God had a plan, and He used the pain and suffering for our salvation. Jesus was and is more than the King of the Jews, He is the King of all the earth. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Because He was delivered to death, we have been granted eternal life in Him.
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21
Peter made the mistake of not hearing Jesus when he was foretold of the response he would have to the Lord’s arrest and crucifixion. His problem was the expression of what he thought of himself when he spoke contrary to what proceeded from the mouth of the Lord — Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And so said all the disciples. {Matthew 26:35}.
The lesson we all can learn from Peters experience is that the word of the Lord stands above our opinion of ourselves. If Peter would have had the discipline to “Hear Him”, he would have agreed with the word of the Lord and sought strength rather than proclaiming strength that he did not poses. Much grief and sorrow could have been avoided.
Yet, in all these things, the Lord Jesus expresses His love with an affirming gaze that caused Peter to repent through many tears. No matter our shortcomings, He is faithful to complete the work that He has begun in us, so let’s “Hear Him”.
The truth about the resurrection of Jesus Christ was covered up by a lie, or so the Chief Priest and Elders thought. Judas was paid 30 pieces of silver to turn the Lord Jesus over to the Roman soldiers, while the guards whom Pontius Pilate commissioned to secure the tomb at the request of the Elders, were paid a large sum of money.
Religion without the knowledge of Christ is both dangerous and corrupt. Dangerous in the sense that it keeps people from knowing the truth about salvation and the way of eternal life. Corrupt because money is used as a god to establish a counter narrative to the truth of the true and Living God.
The truth is that He is Risen! The grave could not hold him and many witnesses testified of this truth. As it is written in 1 Corinthians 15:3-7 — For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve. After that He was seen by over five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain to the present, but some have fallen asleep. After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time.
Abram took a tremendous risk of faith when he walked away from his traditions and way of life. In which his identity and that of his ancestors were formed. In his very first encounter with the true and living God, he was asked to leave his family and his fathers house, and go to a land which he did not know.
The Lord God promised him four things at the outset: I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing.
As a result of this encounter, the father of faith was born. God would change his name to Abraham — the father of many, in accordance with the promise.
Knowing God requires knowing His Son. Even the disciples struggled with the question Agur asked. Jesus confronted Philip in John 14:9-11 to reveal Himself; Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves. Jesus is the express image of God, and He is the fullness of the Godhead in bodily form.

We must stay in the faith because this race is not given to the swift, nor to the strong, but to the ones who endure until the end. Therefore, faith is a race of endurance, which must be run with patience, looking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.
Our faith becomes sight as we walk and move through life believing the word that is spoken from the mouth of God. Because faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God [Romans 10:17]. Our very faith is nourished and our lives are abundant when we walk by faith, and not by sight. This is how Jesus put it — But He answered and said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” Every word spoken from the mouth of God, instructs and shines light on our path; it is the spiritual illumination that corrects the errors of our ways.

When our faith is tested, we can rest assured that patience is working in us. The Lord wants us to know that the testing of our faith produces patience, so that we will count it all joy, as we are going through the refiners fire. Let patience have her perfect work in you, as you grow in faith, and in knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ!
To each one of us a measure of faith has been given as it is written in Romans 12:3 — For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. The capacity of our faith grows in accordance with our active use of the faith we are given, even if it is the size of a mustard seed.
Be encouraged to know that you already have enough faith.
Fear is the enemy of faith. It is therefore essential that we “fear not”. A clear pattern in scripture when an angel brings a heavenly message to earth, is the admonition to “fear not.” This is so fear does not drive out faith. The disciples were overcome with fear and understandably so given the violent storm that arose on the waters. The problem was that they did not cleave to the word that was spoken by Jesus, when he said “Let us cross over to the other side.”
May it be for you as it was for Paul when he was in peril — For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul; you must be brought before Caesar; and indeed God has granted you all those who sail with you.’ Therefore take heart, men, for I believe God that it will be just as it was told me. Acts 27:23-25
Although the storm had raged for fourteen days, of which they had not seen the sun. Yet the word of God gave Paul assurance, that he was able to impart to the others.
May others remain calm because of the faith they see in you!
Jesus was moved by the faith of the Canaanite woman. Although she did not immediately get a response from Jesus, other than silence; and the disciples opposed her and urged Jesus to send her away. She did not waiver — even when she was casted as an outsider who should not take bread from the children of Israel.
Her response to all of this, was worship. Simply because she knew that Jesus was worthy. From her initial conversation, she called him Lord and recognized Him as Messiah, when she called Him the son of David.
Her faith was tested, and she passed the test. My prayer for you is expressed in Job 13:15 — Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him. God is building great faith in you!
Prayer is necessary for us to endure hardship and not faint when difficulties persist even as we pray. We must continue in prayer and not lose heart, against all odds. We know that in our weakness the strength of God is made perfect. The widow represents the weakest in a patriarchal society where power, influence and prosperity came by association with men. If a woman did not have a husband or a son, then she was marginalized and at risk of falling into poverty. Her means of survival were quite limited.
Despite the long odds that the widow was faced with in the parable, she persisted in a way that reflected the elect (chosen) of God crying out to Him day and night. The fundamental question posed by Jesus is — although God will avenge His elect speedily — will He really find faith in the earth when He comes? In other words, will we trust God? Or, will we be consumed by hardship and faint?
Goodbye 2020! Hello 2021! We are thanking and praising God for seeing us through another year! Tonight we are joined by the Grammy Award Winning Le'Andria Johnson as we celebrate the dawning of a new year! Pastor Oliver speaks on Contending Earnestly for the Faith as we turn the corner into a new year!
Faith that is not cultivated is like a garden that is not tilled. If we do not pay attention to the garden, weeds will spring up. It takes work to keep a garden free from weeds. So it is with faith. Faith delivered must not be left idle or it will fade away. Therefore we must contend earnestly for the faith that was once delivered to the saints.
In 2021, build up your faith by praying in the Spirit; be compassionate to others; and pull those who defile themselves out of the fire. I pray that we would grow in the faith as we earnestly contend for our common salvation. Looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
As Jesus prepared His disciples for his departure. He gave them a new commandment to love one another; a word in season which they struggled to understand, as they just wanted to be with him, so it was hard to receive a word that suggested that he was going away and they could not come; and finally, he gave them a promise when he told them “I will come again”.
Never let your heart be troubled as you go through this life. Always remember the promise, and let it be a word in season as we obey the new commandment to love one another. Because love never fails, and love covers a multitude of sins and faults. Receive the promise today and be encouraged knowing that a place has been prepared especially for you!
Our Founding Pastor, Bishop C. Milton Grannum, shared a Christmas Sermon titled Christmas is About Jesus and You and Me and All of Us.
The word of God is true whether we believe it or not. Zacharias the priest heard a sure word from God delivered to him by Gabriel, an angel sent from the presence of God. Yet he did not initially believe, because he focused on his human frailty, rather than on the power of God — even though he prayed for a son.
Elizabeth his wife, Mary her cousin and Joseph the husband of Mary, all had their faith stretched, but they believed. The good news, is that in every case, including Zacharias, there was a fulfillment of the word that was spoken to them. Because God watches over His word to perform it.
Be encouraged today, and know that there will be a fulfillment of every word of God that has been spoken over your life!
Joshua sought to know whether the person in front of him was for or against him. We like Joshua also make binary choices as to our friends and foes. To Joshua’s amazement, he confronted the One who did not choose sides, but must be chosen in order to get the victory. Once Joshua got a revelation of who stood before him, he worshipped and took off his sandals. Just like Moses, he stood on holy ground in the presence of the Holy One. We should not expect the LORD to take up our cause, we should follow Him into battle. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. What is truth? And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” [John 8:32]

The truth does not always come in accordance with our human desire. We cannot frame truth to fit our hearts desire. Sometimes God has to correct us in a way that causes us to know that He is the LORD. Both King Nebuchadnezzar and King Zedechiah came to understand that it was neither human strength nor weakness that caused the captivity of God’s people as the LORD made it clear that He caused it — Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all who were carried away captive, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon. I pray that you will hear His voice and that you will know the truth, so that the truth shall make you free. May you never be in spiritual bondage all the days of your life.
The truth does not always sound pleasing to the ear. Although our response to the things that sound good and are perceived to be good for us, we too can say Amen. The prophet Jeremiah in response to the prophet Hananiah said “The prophets who have been before me and before you of old prophesied against many countries and great kingdoms—of war and disaster and pestilence. As for the prophet who prophesies of peace, when the word of the prophet comes to pass, the prophet will be known as one whom the LORD has truly sent." The will of God is that we hear truth, speak truth and know the truth. May the Spirit of truth abide with you forever so that you will never trust in a lie.
We are living in a time where repetitive speech is exalted above truth. If something is repeated enough through social media and other platforms, it becomes truth to many. Depending upon how many times one hears a message and the source information is received, most cannot discern between the truth and a lie. Mostly because of hyper tribalism, partisan politics and an ever intensifying culture war. It is therefore essential that we revisit the ancient question—what is truth? In this message we will examine what the Bible says about truth and how it applies to our world and individual lives.
Church doors are closed because of the affects of the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time many have taken to the streets to protest against racial injustice. Across many cities fire burns property while businesses are looted by bad actors. In all of this, the Spirit of God is flowing out from the altar into communities across the nations of the world. The Lord God is seeking those who will “get in the flow“ so that healing waters can cover the land. I want to encourage you to get in the flow!
During these times of uncertainty many of us seek counsel to navigate blind spots and peril. The risk is that we seek counsel in the wrong places as it is written in Psalm 1:1-2 — Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.
As believers we must seek the whole counsel of God. Especially, as we experience times that no one has experienced, which makes clear, the only one who knows the way through is God. He is a wonderful counselor.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused lockdowns and isolation around the globe. Here in the United States, it has led to an increase in anxiety and depression across demographics, including children, youth, young adults and seniors. The emotional distress that adversely effects children because of a lack of social interaction, at times leads to sadness and agitation. Suicide rates are higher than they have been in 50 years. We need coping mechanisms that are both biblical and practical. Fear of contracting the virus coupled with fatigue of sheltering in place, has unleashed risky behavior among young adults in particular. How do we endure this very real pandemic? It is good that one should hope and wait quietly For the salvation of the LORD. Lamentations 3:26
Dr. Gillian Grannum joins Pastor Oliver in conversation around this issue so that we can find joy even in this protracted pandemic, where surges seem to move across the country. As always we can take solace in the word of God as we live faithfully and responsibly.
