You Set The Tone is a podcast dedicated to all things coming out of County General! ER remains one of the greatest shows of the '90s and early '00s, and the time is right to delve deep into the goings on of the hardest working (and playing) group of doctors and nurses ever
And Now The Time Has Come,
To Bid Our Friends Farewell.
For Our Hiatus Has Finally Arrived,
Despite Many Stories Left To Tell.
Will Anna Return For Season Five?
Will Doug Ever Follow The Rules?
Are Lizzy And Benton Going To Be Endgame?
Will We Ever Know If Weaver's Anger Cools?
Fear Not, Dear Friends, It's Not The End,
And You Wont Have To Be Alone,
Because The Show Goes On With Stories To Tend,
And Remember - You Set The Tone

This Is The Week For Hearing Kids Yell,
Lizzy And Benton Have A Secret To Tell.
They Try To Be Sneaky, But It Doesn't Really Work -
Just Why Is Romano Donning That Insufferable Smirk?
Down In The ER, There's A New Face In Town,
Max Is Here, So Carter's Face Is Stuck In A Frown.
He's Staying With Anna, They Look Pretty Happy,
Whereas John Looks Like He Wants To Give Max A Wee Slappy.
Jeanie's Developed A Cough And Shortness Of Breath,
Our Hearts Catch In Our Throats - Does This Woman Have Any Luck Left?
Thankfully, She Does! Her X-Rays Give Her The All Clear,
She And Weaver Make Up - We've Been Waiting All Year!
Speaking Of Weaver, She's Teaming Up With Mark,
Neither Of Them Think Doug's Idea Will Hit A Spark.
He Wants A Peads Attenting Full-Time In The ER,
But After This Week - No One Knows What His Chances For The Future Really Are!

And Now Maggie's Back With Her Guns All A-Gleam.
Mark Has To Deliver Some Really Tough News,
To A Man Who's Walked In Carol Hathaway's Shoes.
Doug's Left Caring For A Baby Who's Coming Down,
While Anna's Ex-Flame Has Just Arrived In Town.
A Family Secret Is Uncovered By Kerry Weaver's Mistake,
While John Tries To See Just How Much Chance Can Take.
Romano Shoots His Shot With Corday, But Receives A Big Nay,
While Benton's Left Feeling Odd One Out On Reece's Big Day.

Now That Carter's Kicked Out On His Own,
He Needs The Bank To Approve A Loan,
Honestly Though, Things Look Grim,
At Least Doug's Going To Get Dinner For Him.
Peter's Pulled Up While Morgenstern Squirms,
Until David Makes The Choice To Leave On His Own Terms.
Weaver And Anna Deal With A Bomb's Fallout,
Though Both Have Feelings On What It's All About.
It's A Tough One For All, At The End Of The Day,
But At Least There's A Kiss For Benton And Corday

Another Day In County And Weaver's Mind Is Set,
There's No Way That Doug's Getting An Attending's Cheque.
The Chief Of Staff Has Lost His Nerve,
And Benton's Actions Throw The Staff A Curve.
Corday Supports Peter, Though Romano Tell It Like It Is,
It's One Word Against Another, And Peter's Still The New Kid.
Carol's Day Hits A Snag When The Gamma's Cheque Bounced,
So It's Up To Carter To Find Out What's Its Really About.
He May Be Cut Off From The Life That He Lived So Well,
But At Least He Finally Gets The Courage To Tell,
Anna How He Feels, Though After Drilling For Some Marrow,
But Her Boyfriend Is Back, No Matter How Much John's Eyes Narrow.
Mark Throws A Shindig As Sparse As His Hair,
So Jerry Saves The Day - And The Machine Eventually Gets There.
Back At The Hospital, It's Been A Long And Sad Day,
Jeanie Sits There With Scotty, The Decision's Made, It's Ok

Mark Hasn't Much To Do In The ER Today,
But He Might Have To Help Keep Romano At Bay.
Benton's Going Through It, With Both Porridge And Gas,
When His Issues With Lizzie Come Back To Bite Him In The Ass.
Carol Clinic Is The Scene Of A Story Disturbing And Sad,
When A Young Women Comes In With A Man Who Isn't Her Dad.
Kerry's Got To Babysit Morgenstern Today,
When He's Back To Work, But He's Not Ready To Play.
Anna's A Catholic It Seems, But It Won't Affect Her Calls,
Meanwhile Carter's Energy Is Failing, And His Hope For Chase's Recovery Stalls.
It Seems Like Corday Might Be Having The Day From Hell,
But Jeanie's Is Far Worse - Scotty's Cancer Is Back, And Things Are Not Looking Well.
That Could Have Been It, But There's A Chance That Doug Has Some Goss.
He's Applying For A New Role - Enter A New Pediatric Attending Doc. Douglas Ross.

It's A Week Of Trouble And A Shift Of Strife,
That Leaves More Than One Person Fighting For Life.
Mark Is The One Who Comes Out Most Unscathed,
Though No One Can Find That Man That Malik Went And Bathed.
Jeanie's Time Is Nearly Out With The Young Master Scott,
But That Doesn't Mean Their Friendship's Done - Sure The Tickets've Been Got.
Benton Accidentally Bumps Into His Sister,
Which Leaves Corday With An Awkward Spot Beside Her Romano-shaped Blister.
Anna Storms Through County General On A Mission,
But Her Well-Meaning Actions Only Serve To Cause Friction.
Maybe Her Day Will Get Better. Nope, Sorry, Do Not Pass Go,
Chase Carter's Wheeled In, The Curtain Coming Down On His Show.
John Tries To Draw Blood, Though There's Barely A Vein From Which Any To Take,
So He Makes A Big Call. Now Be Honest, Was It A Mistake?
In The Background Of All, Doug And Kerry Turn The ER Into A Fighting Pen,
But Really, They're All Fools. Doyle's Back, And She'll Kill Again.

Meanwhile Carter Didn't Reckon On A Patient Traffic Jam,
When The Most Difficult Appointment Is An Ophthalmic Exam.
When Weaver Is Down Carter Takes Point And Runs The Show,
Directing Anna, And Benton, Telling Everyone Which Way To Go.
Doug Started His Day Making Carol Feel Miffed,
But Things Get Focused When They're Trapped In A Lift.

So Benton's Going To Need To Get Her Debriefed Without Pause.
There's Stars Left Right Centre, There's Jerry And Randi,
And New Nurses And Faces So Keeping Names Might Be Handy,

It's time for the final farewell,
Of a character we love so well.
It's Susan's last day,
Greene's in dismay.
Doug's turned a new leaf,
Weaver finds an old beef.
Al's granting Jeannie a divorce
Carter's with Dr K of course
Carol is up for a fight
Benton can't get it right
Lydia becomes a bride
Doyle only sees one side.
But it's Greene's last chance
To ask Susan to metaphorically dance
He asks her to stay,
But she goes away.
We'll miss her so much,
She had the magic touch.

This week, just for a change Carter oversleeps AGAIN, but thankfully Gant was there to cover the ER for him, even if Benton was less than impressed. Morgenstern takes a bit more of a centre stage as the news comes in about whether County General is to close or not. Weaver and Greene join him at a very fateful meeting.
Jeanie has her appointment with the HIV clinic and her consultant is wonderfully supportive, although the shadow of cost and insurance rears its ugly head rapidly. Peter makes an unforgiveable move during a trauma. Elsewhere, Carol is struggling with debt and Doug is struggling with adulting.

Why oh why did Carter pick the Blue team? Things start out nicely enough and he meets a nice new friend on the team, Dennis Gant. But Benton hasn't changed at all and Carter quickly finds himself back in the ER, instead of up in surgery. Mark and Susan have a well deserved quiet week, though Doug regresses a bit with his choice of dates.
Carol is back in the ER, earning a little scorn from the rest of the Nurses, while Weaver has descended as the full-time Attending. Benton's day starts with a shock when Jeanie speaks to him about her diagnosis, followed by her receiving some stark advice from a fellow patient.

We have come to the close of ER's second season and there is both a gentle ending for some characters, others are just about to start facing true challenges. Benton is given pause for thought when Jeanie drops her bombshell on him, though this oddly leads to a tender moment between him and Carter. Carter, for his part, is finally graduating from Medical School, though in a welcome return to form, he misses his own ceremony to spend time with a patient.
Doug's frankly bizarre relationship with Karen is thrown into turmoil when she amends a prescription, while Mark gets some unpleasant news from Jen. And unpleasant news from Morgenstern. And even more unpleasant news from Susan. Basically, it's not Mark's best day!
Susan figures out her priorities while Carol struggles with reality. Shep...is Shep, and the reign of Weaver is just beginning...

Susan is stuck between a couch and a blank wall as she attempts to come to terms with the loss of Baby Suzie. Greene tries to help, but he's too swamped trying to handle Weaver's machinations to be of much use. Carter is on his paediatrics rotation, leading to a fateful encounter with a young girl who needs a liver transplant.
Shep is just about on everyone's last nerve at this point, with Carole finally beginning to see the truth about him. Benton bumps into Al Boulet, who has checked into the ER with a bombshell that will rock Jeanie forever...

This week it's all about Susan and the loop of hell she's stuck in, despite delivering some of her best medical care in weeks. Weaver remains skeptical of her ability to be chief resident while Mark is gung-ho. Speaking of Mark, he and Jen manage to hash out their differences, before complicating things further. Doug is playing a very strange game with Karen and Carol is finally beginning to see what Riley sees while stuck in a rig with Shep....
Benton, on the other hand, has a pretty wonderful week!

Oh dear. The episode opens with Shep and you better believe Sharan has some thoughts about that! Shep is struggling still in the wake of Raul's death, but no one is getting more flack for it than Riley. Benton eats a slice of humble pie when a patient he discharges without examining bounces back with a ruptured appendix, for which both Hicks and Jeanie soundly put him in his place.
Meanwhile Susan is going through the ringer with Chloe, while Weaver tries to 'help' with her patients. Mark confesses a deep secret to Doug, though he may wish he hadn't. Speaking of Doug, he can't find his Dad....but he does find his Dad's girlfriend....

Oh Carter. Carter, Carter, Carter. So preoccupied with his worry about matching in County General, Carter let's his excitement go to his head. This results in a rather embarrassing outcome when he has a little too much champagne on his lunch break. Elsewhere in the ER, Benton discovers that Ross accidentally misdiagnosed a young man several months' previously, which may lead to the patient losing a leg. Despite warnings from Greene and legal, Benton informs the boy's grandfather.
Shep is still reeling from the loss of Raul, which can be felt by all in the ER. Lewis can barely keep her cool when Chloe demands to see Little Susie, while Carol and Jeanie continue bashing heads on the hospital floor.

In a grim episode this week, the staff of County rush to save the lives of the victims of a house fire. Shep and Raul were first on the scene, but last to leave...
Doug is let down by Ray again, while Susan gets the most unpleasant shock of her year so far (and that's saying something). Benton offers a kind word to Carter, who struggles with a burn victim's injuries.
After the worst day in a long while, there's always a chair at Doc Magoos....

Babies! Babies everywhere! Thanks to a flood on the fourth floor, all of the ladies-in-labour find themselves giving birth in the ER. Mark is being closely watched by a miraculously present Coburn, while Harper worries she might end up as one of these women in nine months. She tries to talk to Carter about it, but he has an interview he has to prepare for.
Benton is feeling the fallout of his blow up with Count Vulcilich, though he seriously impresses the rest of the hospital with a marathon surgery. Susan deals with adoption agencies and Doug deals with absent fathers. At the end of it all, Connie is about to leave to have her baby....but maybe it's worth stopping for some soup in Doc Magoos...

Things come to a head this week when Benton decides to challenge Count Vucilich on the ethics behind his study. With very little support from those around him, Peter is faced with a difficult decision. Elsewhere, Mark and Susan raise eyebrows as they arrive on the L together, with rumours flying through the ER as quickly as Carter can share them.
Carter is having a rough week, with some truly unpleasant character traits coming to the surface. Can an encounter with Ruby set things straight for him again?

Mark is really having a day of it, but was coming into County General on his day off really a wise decision? Considering in the course of the day he is present for the death of a patient, gets called up to see Morgenstern and the lawyers and gets sued for full-custody of Rachael, maybe it would have been better to stay in bed.
Susan is having a different bit of stress: Stress, thy name is Weaver! With the Chief Resident position up for grabs, the two of them will have to work closely together. Far TOO closely, if you ask Susan.
Carter puts his foot in it with Harper, but he may have saved himself, Harper and even Benton from problems, as something definitely seems off about Vucilich....

Carter v Ruby. Sharan v Seán. We come to it at last!
Benton fears he's made a fool out of himself during surgery, but what does Dr. Vucilich feel? Jeanie does Benton a favour by accompanying him to a gala dinner, which causes him to do a double take when he sees her.
Elsewhere, Susan struggles to help a woman who doesn't want to be helped, while her daughter watches in anger. Things come to a head for Mark as Rachael demands to know when he's moving back home. Meanwhile, Doug's Dad won't stop calling the ER...

Our thoughts are with the family of Dearon 'Deezer D' Thompson, our favourite nurse, Malik, who passed away on January 7th, 2021.
This week, Shep and Raul bring in a small orphanage worth of children, as they are part of a team that rescues them from a down and out Mother. However, Shep puts his foot firmly in his mouth in front of Benton and Malik, leading to a rather tense confrontation.
Elsewhere in the ER, Mark receives a very unpleasant piece of mail from Jen, while Carter blurs the boundaries with a patient's husband (guest starring Red Buttons). Carol and Jeanie face off, while Al Boulet makes an unwelcome return to County General.
But hey, at least Susan gets some pizza in the end!

IT'S CHRISTMAS!!! The ER is ready to get in the holiday spirit this week and none moreso that Hathaway, who awakens to try and light her lovely new fireplace, while Shep quietly freezes in the bed. Carter meets a patient and her husband who will change his life (guest star Red Buttons) and Susan faces a Christmas with Cookie (no thank you!)
Mark faces his first holidays separated from Jen, and feels the struggle. However, he too meets a patient who helps him see the wood for the trees, and capture some of the meaning of Hanukkah. In other news, Benton smiles and the world almost collapses!

This has been a week and a bit for County General! Doug is the latest victim of the early rise, this time with Susan bringing little Suzie to see him. Despite her absence, Chloe still manages to make her presence felt as well. Carol and Shep discover a hidden feature in her new house, thanks to the advice given to her by a patient (guest star Adam Goldberg). Then, to top it all off, Mark gets a phone call that will change his life....

This week, Ross finds himself the centre of some unwanted attention in the ER, as news of his heroism is used as publicity for County General. It even sends him into such a tailspin that he almost comes to blows with Mark. Susan is looking for a babysitter and may have struck gold with an elderly patient in the ER, while Carter fears he may have misdiagnosed a patient...

Things get intense when Doug, down on his luck and ready to leave County General, gets a flat tyre while on the way to a gig. He's just about to throw in the towel when a kid bangs on the window. His brother is trapped in a storm drain and the tide is rising....

What a day in County General! And what a day for Doug Ross! By the end, will he even have a job? Mark is left in a very awkward position when he walks in on Ross and Harper in an extra-curricular activity, but what will poor Carter think? Meanwhile, Hathaway has problems of her own when her notary (guest star Robert Picardo) struggles to stay alive long enough for her to buy her house.
Benton and Lewis clash over treatment of a patient, while she is quickly overriden by a new surgeon - let's see how that goes!

Well it's full steam ahead with this episode! Returning guest star Lucy Liu means a bad day for Doug and Harper, which also leads to a run in with Mark in the ambulance bay. Peter is still recovering from his sprained finger, leading to a nasty pain when a patient squeezes his hand. That same patient wakes him up though when he is forced to see the dark underside of some relationships. Meanwhile, Susan is looking into adoption for little baby Suzie, while her parents redefine what 'helpful' really means!

Join us in County General this week as Shep tries to impress Hathaway (and gets a lot more than he bargained for!), while Susan continues to butt heads with Weaver. Things turn mean when Weaver walks in on Doug, Hathaway and Susan having a joke...about her crutch. Mark tries to manage it all, but he's already having his own issues at home (or rather, Doug's home!)
Carter finally gets to help Benton in a big way, even if it does cost Benton a surgery he wanted!

Hathaway is still out on the longest ridealong ever, rivalling Coburn's crawl to the delivery ward. Susan and Weaver look destined to be at odds forever, while Mark is very much caught in the middle. Guest star Lucy Liu stands out this week as the mother of a young boy, dying of AIDS. All the while, Carter is trying desperately to impress Harper - with deadly results...

Season two has properly kicked off and Carol attends the scene of a horrible shooting with the crew of the ambulance rig. Weaver joins County General and some feathers are definitely ruffled, although she proves herself to be an excellent Doctor all the same. Susan is having her usual good times, not helped in the least when Chloe....acts the way Chloe does!

This week, we are looking at the penultimate episode of ER's first season - Motherhood. Guest director Quentin Tarrantino, fresh off the high of making Pulp Fiction, brings his signature style to much of this episode's visuals.
Chloe and Susan face the trials of bringing baby Suzie into the world, while Doug and Diane face their own issues. Carol and Tag are still trying to make the wedding work and Benton receives a phone call that will change his life.

This week, in an episode that is a bit more upbeat than last week's, we see Tag and Carol struggle to find the time to get their vows written. On top of that, guest star Amy Ryan is a nun who may be pregnant, all while grappling with her faith. Carter has to make a choice between a Surgical sub-internship, or an ER sub-internship - and his choice may not please Benton.
Speaking of pleasing Benton, Jeanie Boulet returns this week!

Well, we all knew this episode was coming - this is one of the hardest days that Mark Greene has ever worked in County General, and we are right there with him for the duration! Guest stars Bradley Whitford and Colleen Flynn play Sean and Brodie O'Brien, and we learn to love them....until...

This week, join Ed, Sharan and Seán as we discuss the fifth episode of ER's first season - Long Day's Journey. Poor Susan really has been struggling, but something happens that'll change the way she looks at things in County General.
Ross deals with a young hustler who receives a crippling diagnoses, while also reeling from the latest in a long line of heartbreaks.
A very important character joins the roster at County General, one who will become a big part of Peter Benton's life...

Welcome back everyone and we hope you had a very Happy New Year! Dr. Lewis is in for a tough one as she has to deal with both Chloe AND Kayson, while Dr. Carter is getting increasingly worked up by a distracted Dr. Benton.
And Dr. Ross? Well someone thought it was a good idea to crash Nurse Hathaway's engagement party....Oh Doug.
