In this week's REPLAY, Karrie is joined by friend Tori Hein as they dive into the often overlooked topic of our relationship with our bodies within the context of faith.

They explore the history of the church, examining periods of body-centeredness and times when the body was neglected or abused. In the present era, where we are inundated with images of others' bodies, the hosts highlight the lack of engagement with this subject in the church and emphasize the importance of honoring our bodies as the dwelling place of God's presence. Karrie and Tori share their personal experiences and insights, revealing that true healing goes beyond focusing on food and sin issues.

They discuss the four types of eating—fueling, joyful indulgence, storm eating, and void eating—as reflections of deeper emotional and spiritual connections. Through practical guidance and deep exploration, listeners are encouraged to reclaim their bodies and find freedom and healing in their relationship with God and themselves.

Today's episode is a fun one! We decided to join forces with Cathy and Shara to have a fun Question and Answer time! Together they explore the idea that religion can be used to avoid dealing with personal issues and instead focus on external behaviors and approval. They also discuss the dangers of using religion as a way to earn God's love and belonging, rather than experiencing true healing and connection with God. Karrie, Cathy and Shara emphasize the importance of authenticity and self-awareness in one's faith journey and caution against using religion as a substitute for facing personal struggles. Their time together explores the topics of certainty and safety in the church, the impact of trauma on our attachment to God, and the use of alcohol to regulate emotions. It emphasizes the importance of doing our own internal work to understand our attachments and how they shape our relationship with God. It also highlights the need for healing and repair in our relationships, even if our families or spouses don't support our journey. The conversation encourages taking responsibility for our own healing and not expecting others to fix us.

Takeaways

  • Religion can be used as a form of self-medication and escape from reality, allowing individuals to avoid dealing with personal issues.
  • Using religion to earn approval and belonging can lead to a cycle of behavior modification and a lack of true healing and connection with God.
  • Authenticity and self-awareness are essential in one's faith journey, as they allow for genuine growth and transformation.
  • It is important to recognize the limitations of religious structures and seek a deeper, personal relationship with God. Certainty in the church can provide a false sense of security and lead to damage.
  • Our attachment styles and past traumas shape our relationship with God.
  • Doing our own internal work is essential for healing and repairing our relationships.
  • We can't expect others to fix us or change for us; we can only change ourselves.
  • It's important to create safe spaces in the church for processing and healing.

In this 3rd installment of their series, Karrie Garcia is joined again with sister Shara, where they explore the concept of shame and its role in shaping human behavior and beliefs. The discussion begins with Karrie using biblical references, such as the story of Peter's denial and the woman at the well, to illustrate how Jesus engaged with individuals and encouraged them to confront their shame and underlying beliefs.

Shara shares her personal experiences and struggles with shame, particularly in relation to isolation and feelings of inadequacy. Karrie guides Shara in identifying the narratives behind her behaviors and helps her recognize that understanding these narratives is key to moving beyond shame.

Why do we do what we do, when we do not do what we want to do?

Why is this? Why do we wrestle with what we want to do, what we DO NOT do, and then why we actually do what we do?

You might’ve found yourself not doing what you actually want to do because of areas in your story where you've learned a behavior from a trauma done from or to us. In today's episode Karrie helps us to actually take a look at our current behaviors and how they might be hindering us from doing the things we actually want to do.

We long to be deeply known...and we all have felt the risk of this. But what is the greater risk? Allowing ourselves to be fully known in community OR to be subject to the enemy's ploy in isolation?

Through life, we begin to gather data from experiences that can validate the enemy's lie that it is dangerous for us to reveal who we are to others and if we do "will I still be loved?". The good news, is that we can reframe this! This episode is for everyone, as we all have felt the heartache of being known before... and then rejected, yet all share a deep groaning to be loved as who God created us to be.

This week Karrie interviews author and speaker, Lisa Whittle, about her newest book/devotional, “The Hard Good,” and some of the stories in her life that shaped the tone and tenderness of each chapter.

Lisa shares honestly that hard things are a part of life, but they don’t have to have the final word. They can become the keys to our greatest usability in the kingdom of God—that is, if we let God make good of them, rather than running away and refusing the growth we truly crave.

Lisa Whittle is the best-selling author of 8 books and several Bible studies, including Jesus Over Everything and The Hard Good. She is a sought-out Bible teacher for her wit and bold, bottom-line approach. She is the founder of online communities: Ministry Strong for ministry leaders and Called Creatives for writers and speakers, and host of the popular Jesus Over Everything podcast. She’s a wife, mom, lover of laughter, good food, and The Bible, and a self-professed feisty work in progress.

Jesus is everything. It is the heart, the passion, and the leadership approach of author and speaker and podcast host, Lisa. Her love runs deep to see people pursue Jesus for life, grow deep roots of faith, and walk strong in the midst of a world that so often seems to have gone crazy.

This week Karrie interviews mental health advocate, Brittney Moses about how, as Christians, we can integrate the mental health conversation into the Church by engaging all the aspects of our humanity (mind, body and soul) that He created while keeping God and His word as the ultimate truth.

In the Church, we typically experience a lot of shame or even abstract talk around mental health and it is Brittney’s passion to bring many different practical tools to the Christian experience.

Brittney Moses is a mental health advocate encouraging the integration of faith, culture, and wellness. A mom and a Los Angeles native, Brittney walks the walk, holding to a faith-informed approach to mental health that is deeply steeped in personal experience and compassion for those she serves. From serving in churches over the past decade, formerly founding an international youth non-profit ministry and as a NAMI-certified support group facilitator and Crisis Textline counselor, Brittney has encountered a wide variety of mental health crises over the years, allowing her to distill theory into practical methodology.

When she’s not writing posts for her popular blog BrittneyMoses.com or hosting her Faith & Mental Wellness Podcast, Brittney can often be found hitting the California beaches and spending precious time with her Austin and fiance Jason.

This week Karrie and Shara uncover the goodness that is offered in the word and tradition of advent. Advent is a word we have likely all encountered but might not know the power that comes from it. Advent doesn’t take us into despair but instead allows us to name the weariness and heartache without losing the joy. Advent helps us hold the right now and the not yet. This Christmas season, we hope that this will help you engage advent and move from tradition into ritual because in the midst of darkness, hope will shine.

As a follow up to last week’s episode, this week Karrie shares about how it’s from the places of hurt that Hope rises. To hold Biblical Hope we must allow ourselves to name the places where we are in deep need — need for comfort, or care, or just the presence of God in our grief. Our pain without the comfort of Jesus produces destruction, but our pain in the hands of God produces freedom.

Join Karrie and Shara this week as they talk with the brilliant Tiffini Kilgore, author and founder of home décor company, House of Belonging! For Tiffini, the trauma and brokenness of her upbringing seemed to follow her into her own family home. The one steady constant amidst the hurt was the reassuring, capable voice of her Heavenly Father.

About her book Kilgore says, “I once thought rescue was a single event. Now I see it is a daily rescue. A daily coming to the table, letting him feed me gospel. Every single day. It’s beautiful. Simple. It’s enough.”

Tiffini’s book, “Misfit Table,” is a testament to this life-changing paradigm; readers will allow it to strengthen their personal relationships with a God of rescue and redemption, and find true belonging at the table of God, a ‘misfit table.’ — Get to know the amazing Tiffini Kilgore by following her on Instagram (@houseofbelonging) or checking out her website! **You can also purchase her book, “Misfit Table: Let Your Hunger Lead You to Where You Belong” on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2FKQP4Y
