Caring for a child with special needs can be incredibly rewarding, but it also comes with unique challenges that can lead to significant stress for parents.
A UNICEF report published in 2021, suggests that 240 million children worldwide live with disabilities, and that figure is increasing by the day .
Russ Solomon is a music therapist and a parent to a neurodiverse son with anger issues, sensory issues, and ADHD. He is also a wellness mentor who helps parents of children with special needs, to eliminate stress, deepen their connection with their kids in a peaceful way, create harmony at home, and ignite their children’s potential.
His motivation to help parents stems from his own experiences growing up with relatives who had cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and developmental delays. He witnessed his relatives struggling to cope with their family members, which inspired him to support other parents in similar situations.
We discussed the triggers that cause parents to struggle and feel overwhelmed, particularly when they believe they must sacrifice their careers to care for their neurotypical children.
Russ says parents need to become knowledgeable about their children’s condition to reduce anxiety. Additionally, he suggests that parents simplify and delegate daily routines, using adaptive technologies to assist in daily care and empower their neurotypical children. He emphasizes that parents should prioritize their own health and well-being by getting enough sleep, eating well, and finding time for activities they enjoy. He believes that having a positive mindset, focusing on the positives, and celebrating small victories can make a big difference in managing stress. He also advises seeking professional help when feeling overwhelmed and advocates for finding therapists and counsellors who can offer strategies to cope with stress and improve mental health, as well as accepting help from friends and family to lighten their care responsibilities.

Eric is one of many front-line military veterans who experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorders and Mental health breakdown after devoting their time and energy to serve in the military to save others.
Eric started his military career as a young 19 year old .
.As a college student he didn't fit in and he was really confused at the point of making decisions on what to do with his life when he was kicked out of college, he decided to join the military as a combat engineer !
Little did he know he would be clearing mine fields and searching for roadside bombs on a daily basis .
Initially deployed to Germany as that was one of his choice locations because of his German heritage , however he was later deployed to Baghdad in Iraq where he knew no one as part of the US military troupe sent to destroy Iraqi weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and end the dictatorial rule of Saddam Hussein .
He had to adjust and adapt fast to the environment going out sometimes riding on special army vehicles called Buffalo army Trucks going to landfills , on his first job his team discovered one hundred and twenty six roadside bombs ,they regularly found Improvised explosive devices (IED) also witnessed his colleagues having bombs detonated in their faces, even losing his military colleagues who he refereed to as brothers on Christmas day of 2006 when everyone else was celebrating.
They died on duty when giant cylinder bullet IED's , detonated on them ,no one was out to help them , even when they got back still processing the incident mentally they were asked to go back out again the next morning , he eventually left the military but had recurrent nightmares about these incidents until he wrote his book which he titled A Bomb Hunter's story -My life clearing the Roads of Iraq .
Eric's experience as a Combat engineer also left him with hearing loss , Post traumatic Stress disorder PTSD- He then had a mental breakdown !
He offers useful advice to other military veterans based on his learning curve and having to tow a long path rehabilitate into his community post military service.
With President Putins war ongoing in Ukraine I know there are thousands of Military and non -military volunteers at the war fronts daily ,and most will likely end up experiencing similar issues as Eric whilst going through post war rehabilitation into their communities , however I hope the advice given by Eric helps them through the difficult times ahead of them , I hope Eric's story inspires other military veterans to continue living a fulfilled life even after they leave the military service.

This episode concludes our love and relationship series , we feature Dr Aiman Zahoor a cosmetic surgeon and Pakistani Muslim .
We discussed Asian Muslim women in abusive relationships .
She shared some of her experience , and offered an insight into the dynamics of Muslim Asian marriages – she shared the fact that Muslim Asian women are not always able to talk openly about their emotions and that the women need more open spaces where they feel safe enough to be able to talk to other people especially when the women are being abused in their relationships
Dr Aiman also offered some suggestions on ways that Muslim Asian women can get through abuse in relationships and how they can sustain themselves when faced with abuse in their relationships.
We also discussed how abuse in Muslim Asian Communities can be minimised .
Marriage for Christians is a contractual agreement between two people, making a promise in the presence of God to love each other for the rest of their lives, the two people involved make a commitment to each other and agree to a life long bond which is supported and encouraged by religious authorities, however marriages sometimes breakdown for different reasons and religious authorities regard these breakdowns with sadness, apathy and segregation which results in conflicting emotions for those who are already feeling the pain of going through divorce .
Susan Tripi my guest on this episode shares her story of going through divorce due to irreconcilable differences after twenty years of being married to a man she still describes as a great guy.
She acknowledges that as a Christian she was stigmatised and ostracised and felt hurt by the reactions of people in the church even though the church is supposed to be a sanctuary especially when people are going through trying times ?
Susan coaches, supports and inspires other women to help them live a fulfilled purposeful life.
