Johana Orellana immigrated to this country when she was 9 years old from El Salvador. As a young girl she had aspirations of having a career in a leadership role. Becoming a young mom at 19, detoured her path but gave her a new perspective. She could be a great mom and show her daughter that she could still be successful in her career. She had the opportunity to start her Walmart career as a temporary associate supporting the Health and Wellness Center. Fast forward 7 years later, Johana is a senior project manager and has participated in various volunteer type roles that have become second nature. She currently co-leads the LatinX Network Connect Pillar for the 2nd year in a row. She also leads a cross-functional team of associates from Walmart Store Ops, Merchandising, and Technology.
Johana is currently back in school due to Walmart’s Live Better U program. Under the program, Walmart subsidizes the cost of higher education, beyond financial aid and an associate contribution equal to $1 a day, removing barriers to college enrollment and graduation. Walmart stands for the Hispanic pursuit of a better life by helping create a stable foundation and by removing obstacles from their path, demonstrating that we are #MejorContigo, we are truly better together. I am truly inspired by Johana’s drive and determination and look forward to sharing her journey with all of you.

Who has helped you become the person you are today? For me, it’s been Daniel E. Vargas. He served 20 years in the United States Air Force and served in Desert Storm. After retiring from the military, he transitioned into the nonprofit world and has dedicated himself to helping veterans. He found me two years after my injury and the rest is history. He was the first person in my life that made it okay for me to cry in front of someone else and be able to express to another man that I loved them. He has been the father figure, brother, role model and mentor I never had growing up. Dan has played a major role in many of the blessings I have today. I am honored to introduce you to my best friend.

Sam Morris is the Founder of Zen Warrior Training and has a powerful presence about himself that is unlike anything my wife and I have experienced. At the age of 24, Sam was in a car accident that was caused by a drunk driver which left him paraplegic. Sam used his breath to connect with his soul and overcome the feelings of guilt and regret from his injuries. Today, he teaches students Zen philosophy, meditation, and somatic disciplines that have personally healed his mind and his relationship to his body.
Key Takeaways
● Sam shares his story and the accident that ended up costing him the use of his legs.
● When Sam became lucid and realized he would never walk again, he began to take deep, deep breaths. Something changed.
● Sam came to the realization that: Breath is spirit.
● Despite being connected to his breath, it was still working to get out of bed every day. Sam still had grief.
● Sam can not afford to be careless with his body. Aging with a disability is no joke.
● Sam accumulated roughly 2 years over a 15 year period of being in and out of hospitals and operating rooms.
● It took Sam about 14 years to become a coach and to inspire others. It took him that long because he just didn’t feel ready.
● “Attitude is the most empowering thing people can learn”.
● J.R. shares an example of how a good attitude has served him well in life.
● Do you really have to project yourself as this super resilient human? There’s actually real value in being vulnerable.
● Show up with all your humanness.
● We often confuse what creates value in our culture. Your trophies, media appearances, and other accolades do not represent your true value.
● Sam had to forgive himself first before he could forgive the drunk driver.
● The accident was something Sam would have never chosen, but he can understand how his soul made a choice.
● We have to create a new map for ourselves and for our lives. A map that doesn’t rely on our past experiences, but instead a map that comes from our imagination.
● We can move forward in an intentional direction that feels right to us.

This conversation might be uncomfortable for some, but I encourage you to sit in this with me. Be uncomfortable with me. Breathe through this. This country is undergoing a very important dialogue and we can’t turn a blind eye to it. This isn’t a podcast about police bashing either, I can respect law enforcement but also acknowledge deep change is needed. This country has experienced years and years of racism and systemic oppression and we can no longer be silent to it.
