We recently had the marvelous opportunity to have Mr. Carl Hespe, of Special Touch Ministry, speak at my church.
Special Touch Ministry is focused on reaching disabled people with the message of hope, love and Good News. They are all about introducing Jesus to an entire group of people who the church spends very little effort or time on, if any.
When I heard Carl’s speak, I knew that I just had to have him on the show here, to share with you the same message he brought to the Lifespring! church in Riverside, CA. I think you’ll find him fascinating, and I think you’re about to have your eyes opened to a new way of thinking about the disabled.

Another packed show today! Some great new music, an “Ask Steve” question, catching up on the last few weeks, what’s in store for the Lifespring! family of show in 2008, and a bit more news!
The “Ask Steve” question from a listener is actually a multi-part question:
Why do the four Gospels have different accounts of Jesus’ ministry, like about His life, arrest and persecution? The scriptures certainly can not contradict itself.
The Bible of course does not teach reincarnation; Heb 9:29. Can you please explain these scriptures: Malachi 4:5 & 6 and Matt 11:10-14, and was John the Baptist Elijah?
What is the different between the Holy Spirit & the nine gifts of the Spirit, are the nine gifts the embodiment of the Holy Spirit? If a person has the Spirit of God (The Holy Spirit) does it means that the person also has the nine gifts of the Spirit of 1Cor 12:7-13? Listen to the show for my answers.

Mark Miller
Two Causes
It’s really rare for me to ask my listeners to financially support any specific “cause”, but today I have two.
The American Association For Lost Children
I recently met a new friend on MySpace that I want you to meet.
The story of the AAFLC has been in Reader’s Digest, Woman’s World, Biography Magazine, and other magazines. Mark has been on Hard Copy, 48 Hours, CNN’s Larry King Live, Inside Edition (three times), and several other TV shows.
Mark Miller’s story is perfect for the Christmas time of year, and with our Going Deeper theme. I spoke with Mark last week for a little over a half hour and found him to be genuinely passionate about what God has called him to do.
For the past twenty years, he’s been helping to find lost and abducted children, reuniting them with their families. He’s been “boots on the ground”, actively searching, going where ever the trail leads. He’s committed to Going Deeper. That conversation is on this show.
Please help The American Association For Lost Children by making GoodSearch.com your default search engine and making the AAFLC the charity of your choice.
Karmyn Tyler’s Sister
Many of you know who Karmyn Tyler is.
Karmyn Tyler
Photography: Michael D’Ambrosia
I’ve played her music many times on the show. She’s a wonderful singer.
More than that, I’ve come to know Karmyn as a friend.
Last year, she recorded a beautiful rendition of Silent Night for the Christmas show that I did with my friend James Cooper, she led our praise and worship time at the podcast expo worship service, she’s been to my house with her mother, Sue, and it’s looking like she may be joining LeeAnn and I here at the house on New Year’s eve.
She’s one of the nicest people you would ever want to meet, and I believe that part of the reason for that is her mom and dad are quality people, and they are a quality family.
On November 27th, Karmyn’s sister Diane and her two daughers, suffered a terrible tragedy. While they were away from their home, a fire started that eventually engulfed the entire structure. They lost everything, including two cars. When they arrived home, they found that everything was gone.
Imagine how you would feel. Devastated. Shocked. Emotions all over the board. And Christmas less than a month away.
It would be so kind of you if you could help Karmyn’s sister Diane and her daughters to have a better Christmas than they might otherwise have this year. Having recently had some dealings with the insurance industry myself, with the theft of all my worktools, I know that even if you are insured, they don’t cover everything. I’m sure that every extra penny that Diane has is having to go for basic living expenses and then making up the difference for what the insurance won’t cover. There won’t be much extra for Christmas. That’s where we can help. Karmyn has put up a link on her website, karmynkast.net, that will allow you to make a donation to Diane and her girls. Any amount will help.

Another “Ask Steve” Question
Davy Mitchell asks: How about something regarding a Christian’s relationship to governments? From democracies to dictatorships to monarchies?
Steve’s Answer
As you may have noticed, I don’t talk much about politics on the show here.
Does that mean that I don’t think Christians should be involved in politics? Not at all.
Does that mean that I don’t have any interest in political issues. Nope. I have very definite and strong opinions about many political issues.
It’s just that I have made it a point to keep politics off the show. My first order of business here has always been to share the message of hope, love and good news that is contained in the Bible.
My belief is that the surest method to make a difference in our culture is to bring someone into a relationship with Jesus. Whether you are a Republican, a Democrat, or a Libertarian… a member of the Labour Party, or the Conservative Party…the thing that matters most is who you say that Jesus is. Do you know him? Do you follow His teachings? If you do, I believe that your political activities and involvement will be subject to his leading if you seek after Him.
However.
Obviously not everyone who is involved in governing is a Christian, so when it comes to fulfilling their office, chances are they will not have the same world view as a believer and will not make decisions that would correspond to our liking. Oftentimes, in today’s society, their world view is the polar opposite to a Christian’s, and their decisions are hostile to our values.
Unless someone is there to represent the Christian voice, it is easily conceivable that we may lose the right to express ourselves at all. So I think that it is imperative that believers be involved in politics.
Let me be clear. I DO NOT think that one’s Christianity is something that should be used in order to garner votes. Too many times, I’ve seen politicians pander to certain religious groups, only to abandon the values they espoused once they got into office. It’s gotten to the point to where I won’t believe a candidate is the real deal until I’ve done some digging myself.
Same thing with businesses, by the way. When I see the fish symbol on a business’ sign or sales literature, I wonder about them. Seems to me that if you are a Christian, your business practices or your political career will testify to it and you won’t have to publicize it.
So, what does the Bible say about the believer’s relationship to governments?

What do I mean by that? There used to be a series of tv commercials for an iced tea company. I think it was Lipton. The end of these commercials always showed someone taking a drink of the tea, smiling broadly, and then falling backward into a sparkling blue swimming pool. Remember those commercials?
The other day I was thinking about following Jesus, doing the will of God, and how so many of us have a hard time completely surrendering to Him. I think it’s a trust issue.

What’s your calling? What were you made to do? What is your purpose?
There seem to be lots of books on the subject. That tells me that a lot of people are searching for the answer to the question: What is your calling?
I’m going to take a leap here, okay? Are you willing to go with me? Just humor me, okay?
Antidepressant drugs are selling like candy. People are unhappy. Depressed. I found a list online of the most popular antidepressants. There were 24 names on the list!
Good grief! What did we do before these drugs existed? Now Listen, I am not one who is against drugs when they are truly, medically needed. So you don’t need to send email beating me up over what I’m saying here. I’m not against drugs when medically called for. I think they are a Godsend. They can be good. But I think that in our culture today, too often we want the quick fix, the instant answer. It’s easier to pop a pill than to get to the cause. Again, I am not a doctor, but in my opinion, the reason so many people are feeling depressed is because we are too centered on our own problems! We are spending so much time examining our own navels that there is no way that we can effectively do what God has called each of us to do, no matter what that calling happens to be.

Domestic abuse is a huge problem. The statistics I read recently said that somewhere between nearly 1 million and 3 million women in the United States are victims of some kind of abuse each year. Chances are good that you know someone who has been abused by a spouse or partner.
One way to help is to be educated. Knowing the signs of abuse might just make the difference in a loved one’s life. It just might mean that you are moved into action…to encourage the victim to make the appropriate changes.
You’re going to learn another way that you might help on today’s show. I’m going to be talking to Claudia Harsh, spokes person for the 4th Annual One Voice Domestic Violence Community Awareness Walk, which will take place on Sunday, September 9th, in Cincinnati. It doesn’t matter if you are not in Ohio. You can still help. Listen to find out how.

Scripture:
Ephesians 5:25 – 28 (TMSG) 25Husbands, go all out in your love for your wives, exactly as Christ did for the church–a love marked by giving, not getting. 26Christ’s love makes the church whole. His words evoke her beauty. Everything he does and says is designed to bring the best out of her, 27dressing her in dazzling white silk, radiant with holiness. 28And that is how husbands ought to love their wives.

I read something recently during the Lifespring! Family Bible that hit me like a ton of bricks. Every time I read it silently to myself, somehow I sort of skimmed over it. Here’s the passage:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luke 4:1 – 13 (TMSG)
1Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wild. 2For forty wilderness days and nights he was tested by the Devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when the time was up he was hungry.
3The Devil, playing on his hunger, gave the first test: “Since you’re God’s Son, command this stone to turn into a loaf of bread.”
4Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy: “It takes more than bread to really live.”
5For the second test he led him up and spread out all the kingdoms of the earth on display at once. 6Then the Devil said, “They’re yours in all their splendor to serve your pleasure. I’m in charge of them all and can turn them over to whomever I wish. 7Worship me and they’re yours, the whole works.”
8Jesus refused, again backing his refusal with Deuteronomy: “Worship the Lord your God and only the Lord your God. Serve him with absolute single-heartedness.”
9For the third test the Devil took him to Jerusalem and put him on top of the Temple. He said, “If you are God’s Son, jump. 10It’s written, isn’t it, that ‘he has placed you in the care of angels to protect you; 11they will catch you; you won’t so much as stub your toe on a stone’?”
12“Yes,” said Jesus, “and it’s also written, ‘Don’t you dare tempt the Lord your God.'”
13That completed the testing. The Devil retreated temporarily, lying in wait for another opportunity.”
It’s hard to put into words how blown away I am at the thought that this unbelievable honor has been bestowed on me. I recently received an invitation, with all expenses paid, to have a private meeting with one of the most respected and most loved men in America…”
Thus begins the show. But there’s something else, too. The subject is prayer.
Now, I know that for a lot of people, prayer can be a boring subject, but come on, when you think of it as an incredible opportunity to speak to and be heard by the most incredible, powerful, knowledgeable, kind, loving being in all of the universe, how can you not be completely jazzed at the mention of it?
Friendship…from a Biblical perspective, from your emails, and a story of friendship from a different perspective.
Scriptures
The greatest love is shown when people lay down their lives for their friends. You are my friends if you obey me. I no longer call you servants, because a master doesn’t confide in his servants. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me (John 15:13-15).
A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.” (Proverbs 17:17)
Wounds from a friend are better than many kisses from an enemy. (Proverbs 27:6)
As iron sharpens iron, a friend sharpens a friend. (Proverbs 27:17)
Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?” (Amos 3:3)
Two people can accomplish more than twice as much as one; they get a better return for their labor. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But people who are alone when they fall are in real trouble. And on a cold night, two under the same blanket can gain warmth from each other. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken. (Ecclesiastes 4:9 – 12)
Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:7-8)
Is more always better? Where does contentment come in? Who’s in charge of what is in your life?
We talk about that, and where I have gotten a bit off the mark in my own life.
Scriptures
Philippians 4:11 – 13 (TMSG) 11Actually, I don’t have a sense of needing anything personally. I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. 12I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. 13Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.
Matthew 9:10 – 13 (TMSG) 10Later when Jesus was eating supper at Matthew’s house with his close followers, a lot of disreputable characters came and joined them. 11When the Pharisees saw him keeping this kind of company, they had a fit, and lit into Jesus’ followers. “What kind of example is this from your Teacher, acting cozy with crooks and riff-raff?” 12Jesus, overhearing, shot back, “Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick? 13Go figure out what this Scripture means: ‘I’m after mercy, not religion.’ I’m here to invite outsiders, not coddle insiders.”
The Lord is near. 6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
That’s why I am running this interview again. I’m sure there are many of you listening who are new to the show since July of 2005, and I thought this story needed to be told again.
This interview is amazing! Michael Franzese talks about how he was brought into New York City’s Columbo crime family, what “the life” is like, what he did to earn over $2 billion for the Mafia, and how that earned him millions of dollars per week. And that’s just the beginning. This is one podcast you HAVE to hear!
Many times people say that the God of the Old Testament was all about judgment, that He was mean and angry. I’ve had people say that to me more than once. They look at the times where God would punish the people, or bring judgment and bondage, and focus there.
Then those same people look at God in the New Testament and say that He’s all about grace and love and forgiveness. And they focus only on the grace and forgiveness. They say that’s the God I want to serve. They look at God as a big cuddly teddy bear or something.
Which is true? Listen to the show for the answer!
I was at Disneyland yesterday and saw something that reminded me of the relationship that most believers have with God.
I was standing in line to go on a ride with Timothy and the Lovely Lady LeeAnn. Standing just behind us was a woman and a little boy who looked to be a year or two younger than Tim. Now, Tim is one of those kinds of people who can talk to just about anybody, so he struck up a little conversation with the boy. No big deal, happens all the time. The person writing said that they know very little about the Holy Spirit , and asked me to do a show about Him. Actually the writer asked me to do a show about “it”, but the Holy Spirit is not an “it”, the Holy Spirit is a “He”.
Should a believer have standards? With whom and with what should we be identified? After all, Jesus hung out with sinners, right? If He did, do you think he followed their lead, or was it the other way around?
People say that God loves everyone, and that we should leave it up to Him to show them their errors. That we should just love them and accept them.
Okay, but how far does that go? When does this mindset move from being loving and compassionate to impotent and ineffective? When do we become laughing stocks, and worse yet, when do we cross the line from being loving and accepting, to encouraging and endorsing?
We continue our conversation with football great, Rev. Rosey Grier. The post Lifespring!118 “Interview with Rosey Grier: The Fearsome Foursome Part 2” first appeared on Lifespring! Media.
Happy New Year!
In this first show of 2007 you’ll hear the first part of a conversation I recently had with Rosey Grier.
For those of you who aren?t familiar with who this great man is, let me just say that you are in for a treat. From 1963 to 1966, Rosey was part of what Dick Butkus called “the most dominant line in football history.” The line was called the L.A. Rams Fearsome Foursome. You?ve heard of sacking the quarterback? That term was coined during the reign of the Fearsome Foursome, by one of its members, Deacon Jones. He said, “You know, you sack a city, you devastate it.” Rosey was a formidable presence on the football field, at 6?5? and over 300 pounds.
We?re going to hear more about that as the conversation unfolds, but there is so much more to Rosey?s life than football.
According to Wikipedia, Grier served as a bodyguard for his friend, U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Robert Kennedy, but was guarding Ethel Kennedy, the Senator’s wife, the night that Kennedy was assassinated in Los Angeles in 1968. Grier and Olympic gold medalist Rafer Johnson heard shots fired ahead of them. As Johnson rushed forward and grabbed the gun of the assassin, Grier followed suit, jumped on the pile, and put his hand over Johnson’s who had already gained control of the weapon.
I first met Rosey Grier in 1986 when I was managing some Christian bookstores. His autobiography, called ?The Gentle Giant? had just been released, along with an album, entitled ?Committed?. As part of a promotional tour, the publishers brought Rosey to a couple of the stores I managed because they were some of the biggest stores in southern California.
Coming from very humble beginnings, Rosey Grier has been the friend of Presidents, gang members, the Queen of England and a podcaster in Riverside, California. I must say that of the many people that I have interviewed for this show, no one has been more gracious and generous than Rosey Grier. We laughed together, and I cried as he shared part of his story with me in his office in Santa Monica, CA.
From the moment the Lovely Lady LeeAnn and I walked in, Rosey Grier made us feel welcome and at ease. He began telling stories even before I started recording, so we are going to pick up the conversation as he was telling us how and why his political affiliation changed?
The Lifespring! Podcast has received an awesome, incredibly humbling award. My fellow podcasters have voted this show at the Best in the Spirituality/Religion category. All of the nominating and voting was done by podcasters, so this is indeed quite an honor.
I don’t do this program for the “praise of man”, but it is very nice to be recognized for excellence. A lot of love and effort goes into the show, so I’m really glad to know that the time invested is reflected in the result.
Thanks to everyone who voted.
And then we get on with a great conversation with Jerimae Yoder, whose new CD will be released on August 8, 2006! We hear a couple of songs from the new CD as well: “Evidence” and “Not In Vain”.
The show ends with the song that really embodies the reason for the Lifespring! podcast: Bob Bennett’s “The Best.”
Last week I had the great pleasure of spending some time talking with one of the very first Christian artists to support podcasting. Ever since I first heard Wahba?s music both on Rick Wezowicz?s ICM Raw, and at indieheaven.com, I have been a fan. I?ve played his music on this show several times, and on the Lifespring! Weekend Music Show. He has a real attitude of ministry, and I am thrilled to introduce you to wahba, the man?
This is a very different “Lifespring!” show. The war in Israel and Lebanon, involving Hezbollah, has brought much criticism of both sides. With Pastor Steve O’Brien as my guest, we discuss the situation in an attempt to look at things in a balanced and Biblical way.
Scripture
Gen 16:1 – 16 (NIV) 1Now Sarai, Abram?s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian maidservant named Hagar; 2so she said to Abram, ?The LORD has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my maidservant; perhaps I can build a family through her.? Abram agreed to what Sarai said. 3So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years, Sarai his wife took her Egyptian maidservant Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife. 4He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress. 5Then Sarai said to Abram, ?You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my servant in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the LORD judge between you and me.? 6?Your servant is in your hands,? Abram said. ?Do with her whatever you think best.? Then Sarai mistreated Hagar; so she fled from her. 7The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur. 8And he said, ?Hagar, servant of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?? ?I?m running away from my mistress Sarai,? she answered. 9Then the angel of the LORD told her, ?Go back to your mistress and submit to her.? 10The angel added, ?I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count.? 11The angel of the LORD also said to her: ?You are now with child and you will have a son. You shall name him Ishmael,? for the LORD has heard of your misery. 12 He will be a wild donkey of a man; his hand will be against everyone and everyone?s hand against him, and he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.? 13She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: ?You are the God who sees me,? for she said, ?I have now seen the One who sees me.? 14That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.15So Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave the name Ishmael to the son she had borne. 16Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.
Gen 17:20 – 21 (NIV) 20And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation. 21But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year.?
Last week’s Digger’s Story podcast surprised me. An excerpt from Lifespring!95 was included in their episode number 28. That prompted another contribution to that podcast by me, dealing with what my idea of “peace” is. In that comment to them, I promised to do this show about that subject. So, as promised, peace is the subject of this show.
On this show:
I went to a movie again yesterday. Don?t you hate when you?re watching a scene that is very dark, and then it cuts to a really bright scene??? It hurts your eyes!
You know, during the dark scene, you can?t really see what?s going on very well, but after awhile you get used to it. As a matter of fact, your eyes adjust and you begin to see things a little clearer. You can?t really see much detail, and you can?t see colors much either. But you start to feel fairly comfortable.
Then, BAMMO! All of a sudden they shock you with a really bright scene, lots of times it?s of the noon day sky or something. Wow that hurts. I really hate when film makers do that. The shock from going from dark to light just plain hurts. But, after your eyes get adjusted, you can see much more detail, and colors are nice and bright and beautiful. Everything is so easy to see. And you realize that before, when it was dark, you were really missing a lot….(continued on the podcast)
Scriptures
Matt 7:1 – 29 (NIV) 1?Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3?Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother?s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, ?Let me take the speck out of your eye,? when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother?s eye. 6?Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and then turn and tear you to pieces. 7?Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 9?Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! 12So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. 13?Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. 15?Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep?s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them. 21?Not everyone who says to me, ?Lord, Lord,? will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22Many will say to me on that day, ?Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?? 23Then I will tell them plainly, ?I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!? 24?Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.? 28When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
A very special guest today discusses “Liberty and Civility”. This Tuesday marks the celebration of Independence Day here in the good old U. S. of A., and being the patriotic guy that I am, I really wanted you to hear what this guest has to say. His name is Pastor Mel Bennett, of LifeSpring Assembly of God in Riverside, CA. I’m happy to say that he is my pastor.
You don’t have to be an American citizen, however, for this show to say something meaningful to you!
It is the most natural thing in the world to want, even chase after, joy and happiness. (And by the way, those, to me, are two different things?)
As a matter of fact, the American Declaration of Independence talks about ?life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.?
So this isn?t new. It?s been important to people since the dawn of man.
What?s the difference between joy and happiness?
To me, happiness is an emotion you feel from an outside event.
Joy is something that comes from within, it?s based not on present circumstances, but on, well, that?s what the show is about today. I talk about the chase, the pursuit of happiness and joy, on this show.
Scriptures
Mark 3(The Message New Testament)
Then he went back in the meeting place where he found a man with a crippled hand. The Pharisees had their eyes on Jesus to see if he would heal him, hoping to catch him in a Sabbath infraction. He said to the man with the crippled hand, ?Stand here where we can see you.?
Then he spoke to the people: ?What kind of action suits the Sabbath best? Doing good or doing evil? Helping people or leaving them helpless?? No one said a word.
He looked them in the eye, one after another, angry now, furious at their hard-nosed religion. He said to the man, ?Hold out your hand.? He held it out?it was as good as new! The Pharisees got out as fast as they could, sputtering about how they would join forces with Herod?s followers and ruin him.
John 15 (The Message New Testament)
?Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can?t bear grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can?t bear fruit unless you are joined with me.
?I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you?re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can?t produce a thing. Anyone who separates from me is deadwood, gathered up and thrown on the bonfire. But if you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon. This is how my Father shows who he is?when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples.
Galatians 5:19 – 25 (The Message New Testament)
It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness; trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits; the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on. This isn?t the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use your freedom this way, you will not inherit God?s kingdom.
But what happens when we live God?s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard?things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.
On last week’s In Touch With God’s Character I spoke about God as our Comforter. I said that He will comfort you. I said that I have needed His comfort many times, and that I have received comfort in Him.
That is a true statement, but it isn’t the whole story. Sometimes we don’t feel His comfort. What then?
The Topic:
Christy from the Psycheology podcast asked about what the Bible says concerning how God might bring something good from our bad decisions.
Scripture:
2 Sam. 12:1 through 2 Sam. 12:24 (NIV)1The LORD sent Nathan to David. When he came to him, he said, ?There were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor. 2The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle, 3but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.
4?Now a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had come to him.?
5David burned with anger against the man and said to Nathan, ?As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did this deserves to die! 6He must pay for that lamb four times over, because he did such a thing and had no pity.?
7Then Nathan said to David, ?You are the man! This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ?I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul. 8I gave your master?s house to you, and your master?s wives into your arms. I gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if all this had been too little, I would have given you even more. 9Why did you despise the word of the LORD by doing what is evil in his eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.?
11?This is what the LORD says: ?Out of your own household I am going to bring calamity upon you. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to one who is close to you, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight. 12You did it in secret, but I will do this thing in broad daylight before all Israel.??
13Then David said to Nathan, ?I have sinned against the LORD.?
Nathan replied, ?The LORD has taken away your sin. You are not going to die. 14But because by doing this you have made the enemies of the LORD show utter contempt,? the son born to you will die.?
15After Nathan had gone home, the LORD struck the child that Uriah?s wife had borne to David, and he became ill. 16David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and went into his house and spent the nights lying on the ground. 17The elders of his household stood beside him to get him up from the ground, but he refused, and he would not eat any food with them.
18On the seventh day the child died. David?s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they thought, ?While the child was still living, we spoke to David but he would not listen to us. How can we tell him the child is dead? He may do something desperate.?
19David noticed that his servants were whispering among themselves and he realized the child was dead. ?Is the child dead?? he asked.
?Yes,? they replied, ?he is dead.?
20Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate.
21His servants asked him, ?Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!?
22He answered, ?While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, ?Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let the child live.? 23But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.?
24Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and he went to her and lay with her. She gave birth to a son, and they named him Solomon. The LORD loved him;
Scriptures
1 Cor. 15:17 (NIV)
17And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.
1 Cor. 15:6 through 1 Cor. 15:8 (NIV)
6After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.
John 19:38 through John 19:39 (NIV)
38Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate?s permission, he came and took the body away. 39He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
Matt. 28:1 through Matt. 28:11 (NIV)
1After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.
2There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.
5The angel said to the women, ?Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ?He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.? Now I have told you.?
8So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9Suddenly Jesus met them. ?Greetings,? he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10Then Jesus said to them, ?Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.?
11While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.
The door?s locked; my children are all down for the night; I can?t get up to give you anything.? ?But let me tell you, even if he won?t get up because he?s a friend, if you stand your ground, knocking and waking all the neighbors, he?ll finally get up and get you whatever you need. ?Here?s what I?m saying: Ask and you?ll get; Seek and you?ll find; Knock and the door will open.
1A record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the son of Abraham:
2Abraham was the father of Isaac,
Isaac the father of Jacob,
Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
3Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar,
Perez the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
4Ram the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
5Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
6and Jesse the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah?s wife,
7Solomon the father of Rehoboam,
Rehoboam the father of Abijah,
Abijah the father of Asa,
8Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,
Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,
Jehoram the father of Uzziah,
9Uzziah the father of Jotham,
Jotham the father of Ahaz,
Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,
10Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,
Manasseh the father of Amon,
Amon the father of Josiah,
11and Josiah the father of Jeconiah? and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.
12After the exile to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,
Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
13Zerubbabel the father of Abiud,
Abiud the father of Eliakim,
Eliakim the father of Azor,
14Azor the father of Zadok,
Zadok the father of Akim,
Akim the father of Eliud,
15Eliud the father of Eleazar,
Eleazar the father of Matthan,
Matthan the father of Jacob,
16and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
17Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ.?
18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
Psa. 132:11 (NIV)
11 The LORD swore an oath to David,
a sure oath that he will not revoke:
?One of your own descendants
I will place on your throne?
Luke 1:32 (NIV)
32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
Luke 1:36 (NIV)
36Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month.
Luke 1:35 (NIV)
35The angel answered, ?The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called? the Son of God.
Luke 1:46 through Luke 1:56 (NIV)
46And Mary said:
?My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me?
holy is his name.
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
55 to Abraham and his descendants forever,
even as he said to our fathers.?
56Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
Matt. 1:18 through Matt. 1:25 (NIV)
18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. 19Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ?Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,? because he will save his people from their sins.?
22All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23?The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel???which means, ?God with us.?
24When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
Luke 2:1 (NIV)
1In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.
Mic. 5:2 (NIV)
2 ?But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans? of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins? are from of old,
from ancient times.??
Luke 2:6 through Luke 2:7 (NIV)
6While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Matt. 1:21 (NIV)
21She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,? because he will save his people from their sins.?
Matt. 2:1 through Matt. 2:23 (NIV)
1After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi? from the east came to Jerusalem 2and asked, ?Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east? and have come to worship him.?
3When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. 4When he had called together all the people?s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ? was to be born. 5?In Bethlehem in Judea,? they replied, ?for this is what the prophet has written:
6 ??But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.???
7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. 8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, ?Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.?
9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east? went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
13When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. ?Get up,? he said, ?take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.?
14So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: ?Out of Egypt I called my son.??
16When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. 17Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
18 ?A voice is heard in Ramah,
weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.??
19After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt 20and said, ?Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child?s life are dead.?
21So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. 22But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, 23and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: ?He will be called a Nazarene.?
Luke 2:41 through Luke 2:52 (NIV)
41Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. 42When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast, according to the custom. 43After the Feast was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, ?Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.?
49?Why were you searching for me?? he asked. ?Didn?t you know I had to be in my Father?s house?? 50But they did not understand what he was saying to them.
51Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. 52And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Matt. 12:46 through Matt. 12:50 (NIV)
46While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. 47Someone told him, ?Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.??
48He replied to him, ?Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?? 49Pointing to his disciples, he said, ?Here are my mother and my brothers. 50For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.?
John 19:26 (NIV)
26When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, ?Dear woman, here is your son,?
Acts 1:14 (NIV)
14They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
Matt. 13:55 through Matt. 13:56 (NIV)
55?Isn?t this the carpenter?s son? Isn?t his mother?s name Mary, and aren?t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56Aren?t all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things??
Mark 6:3 (NIV)
3Isn?t this the carpenter? Isn?t this Mary?s son and the brother of James, Joseph,? Judas and Simon? Aren?t his sisters here with us?? And they took offense at him.
Scriptures
Matt. 6:6 – 14 (TMNT)
“Here’s what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace.
“The world is full of so-called prayer warriors who are prayer-ignorant. They’re full of formulas and programs and advice, peddling techniques for getting what you want from God. Don’t fall for that nonsense. This is your Father you are dealing with, and he knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this:
‘Our Father in heaven,
Reveal who you are.
Set the world right;
Do what’s best?
as above, so below.
Keep us alive with three square meals.
Keep us forgiven with you and forgiving others.
Keep us safe from ourselves and the Devil.
You’re in charge!
You can do anything you want!
You’re ablaze in beauty!
Yes. Yes. Yes.’
“In prayer there is a connection between what God does and what you do. You can’t get forgiveness from God, for instance, without also forgiving others. If you refuse to do your part, you cut yourself off from God’s part.
Philipians 4:6 – 4:7 (NIV)
6Do not be anxious about anything, (so much for having fear about approaching God.)(Or, in other words, be confident.) but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Scriptures
Rom. 5:1-10 (NIV)
1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
6You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God?s wrath through him! 10For if, when we were God?s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
A short and sweet episode today because the Lovely Lady LeeAnn and I are celebrating Valentine’s Day and our wedding anniversary tonight.
Scripture
John 3:16 (TMNT)
?This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son, Jesus. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn?t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted;
Isaiah 55:8 – 9 (NIV)
8 ?For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,?
declares the LORD.
9 ?As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Matthew 5:45 (NIV)
(the Father) causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
11For I know the plans I have for you,? declares the LORD, ?plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Revelation 21:3 – 4 (NIV)
? the dwelling of God (will be) with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things (will be) passed away.?
1 Corinthians 13:12 (NIV)
12Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
Job 1:20 – 22 (NIV)
20At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship 21and said:
?Naked I came from my mother?s womb,
and naked I will depart.
The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away;
may the name of the LORD be praised.?
22In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.
Our First Ask Steve Question
Listener Russ writes: “Quick question: with all the interpretations of the Bible out there, how
do I know that I’m really getting the Word as the Lord meant it to be presented? One example is 1 Corinthians 13 – in most translations the story is about love, in the King James it is about charity. I feel like I should learn Greek and study the orignal text to see what Paul wrote to better understand what God said.”
This is a great question, because many people ask the same thing. Is there a “best” or “right” Bible? There really is a good answer to that question! Listen to the podcast to find out the answer.
1 Cor. 13:4 – 7 (NIV)
4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Scriptures
John 7:25-44 (NIV)
25At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, ?Isn?t this the man they are trying to kill? 26Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Christ? 27But we know where this man is from; when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from.?
28Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, ?Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, 29but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.?
30At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his time had not yet come. 31Still, many in the crowd put their faith in him. They said, ?When the Christ comes, will he do more miraculous signs than this man??
32The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.
33Jesus said, ?I am with you for only a short time, and then I go to the one who sent me. 34You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.?
35The Jews said to one another, ?Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36What did he mean when he said, ?You will look for me, but you will not find me,? and ?Where I am, you cannot come???
37On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ?If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.? 39By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40On hearing his words, some of the people said, ?Surely this man is the Prophet.?
41Others said, ?He is the Christ.?
Still others asked, ?How can the Christ come from Galilee? 42Does not the Scripture say that the Christ will come from David?s family and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?? 43Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. 44Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
Scriptures
Mark 2:14-17 (NIV)
14As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector?s booth. ?Follow me,? Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
15While Jesus was having dinner at Levi?s house, many tax collectors and ?sinners? were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the ?sinners? and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: ?Why does he eat with tax collectors and ?sinners???
17On hearing this, Jesus said to them, ?It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.?
Matt. 9:9-13 (NIV)
9As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector?s booth. ?Follow me,? he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew?s house, many tax collectors and ?sinners? came and ate with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, ?Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and ?sinners???
12On hearing this, Jesus said, ?It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13But go and learn what this means: ?I desire mercy, not sacrifice.? For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.?
Matt. 22:36-39 (NIV)
36?Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law??
37Jesus replied: ??Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.? 38This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: ?Love your neighbor as yourself.?
While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, ?Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.? Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. ?I am willing,? he said. ?Be clean!? And immediately the leprosy left him.
Music
Scriptures
Mark 10:13-32 (NIV)
13People were bringing little children to Jesus to have him touch them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, ?Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.? 16And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.
17As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. ?Good teacher,? he asked, ?what must I do to inherit eternal life??
18?Why do you call me good?? Jesus answered. ?No one is good?except God alone. 19You know the commandments: ?Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.???
20?Teacher,? he declared, ?all these I have kept since I was a boy.?
21Jesus looked at him and loved him. ?One thing you lack,? he said. ?Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.?
22At this the man?s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ?How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!?
24The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, ?Children, how hard it is? to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.?
26The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, ?Who then can be saved??
27Jesus looked at them and said, ?With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.?
28Peter said to him, ?We have left everything to follow you!?
29?I tell you the truth,? Jesus replied, ?no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields?and with them, persecutions) and in the age to come, eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last first.?
32They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him.
Scripture
Luke 2:1 – 20 (NKJV)
1And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.
4Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. 6So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
8Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10Then the angel said to them, ?Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.?
13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
14 ?Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!?
15So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, ?Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.? 16And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.
The marriage mini-series begins.
Music by Adrina Thorpe with the song “Did You Think”, Colin Raye singing “We’ll Be Alright”, and Rob Costlow playing his piano in the background. The song is “Family”.
Scriptures
Genesis 2:24 (NIV)
24For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
Ephesians 5:21-30 (NIV)
21Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
22Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. 23For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. 24Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
25Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26to make her holy, cleansing? her by the washing with water through the word, 27and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. 28In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church?30for we are members of his body.
On this podcast we revisit some of Jesus’ teachings.
Scriptures:
Matthew 5:1-16 (NIV)
1Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2and he began to teach them, saying:
3 ?Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
11?Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
13?You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.
14?You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
John 3:16-21 (NIV)
16?For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God?s one and only Son. 19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.?
Scriptures
Ecclesiastes 2:1-11 (NIV)
1I thought in my heart, ?Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good.? But that also proved to be meaningless. 2?Laughter,? I said, ?is foolish. And what does pleasure accomplish?? 3I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly?my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.
4I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards. 5I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. 7I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. 8I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired men and women singers, and a harem? as well?the delights of the heart of man. 9I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me.
10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired;
I refused my heart no pleasure.
My heart took delight in all my work,
and this was the reward for all my labor.
11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done
and what I had toiled to achieve,
everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;
nothing was gained under the sun.
Matthew 6:19-34 (NIV)
19?Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22?The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24?No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.
25?Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? 26Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
28?And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, ?What shall we eat?? or ?What shall we drink?? or ?What shall we wear?? 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
A BRIBE!
Tell me your preference for how long you would like the Lifespring! podcast to be, and if you would like the frequency of the show to change. For instance, shorter podcasts but more than one a week (how many would you like?). Same frequency, but shorter. Shorter with less music… You get the idea.
Send your ideas to: time.lifespring (at) gmail (dot) com. (Replace the “at” and the “dot” with the appropriate symbols.)
On October 3, 2005, I will choose at random one of the responses I receive at the above address to receive the prize: a New American Standard Topical Chain Study Bible from my own personal library. I’ve had this Bible since around 1983, and it’s a great tool for study.
That’s how much I want your input on this question. So please, make your voice heard!
Scripture References:
Exodus 3:13-14 (NIV)
13Moses said to God, ?Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ?The God of your fathers has sent me to you,? and they ask me, ?What is his name?? Then what shall I tell them??
14God said to Moses, ?I AM WHO I AM.? This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ?I AM has sent me to you.??
John 6:26 through John 6:65 (NIV) EXCERPTS
26Jesus answered, ?I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. 27Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.?
28Then they asked him, ?What must we do to do the works God requires??
29Jesus answered, ?The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.?
32Jesus said to them, ?I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.?
34?Sir,? they said, ?from now on give us this bread.?
35Then Jesus declared, ?I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.
* 37All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.
* 39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. 40For my Father?s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.?
41At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, ?I am the bread that came down from heaven.? 42They said, ?Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ?I came down from heaven???
43?Stop grumbling among yourselves,? Jesus answered. 44?No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets: ?They will all be taught by God.?? Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. 48I am the bread of life. 49Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. 50But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. 51I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.
Some ?I AMs OF Jesus?
John 8:12 (NIV)
12When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ?I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.?
John 9:5 (NIV)
5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.?
John 10:7 AND John 10:9 (NIV)
7Therefore Jesus said again, ?I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.
9I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.? He will come in and go out, and find pasture.
John 10:11 (NIV)
11?I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
John 10:14 (NIV)
14?I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me?
John 11:25 (NIV)
25Jesus said to her, ?I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies;
John 14:6 (NIV)
6Jesus answered, ?I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 15:1 (NIV)
1?I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.
John 15:5 (NIV)
5?I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
A revealing interview with a guy that has, without a doubt, made his mark on music. This candid conversation may surprise you, and it will certainly make you think. Plus, three songs from Bryan’s latest CD and DVD, “Music City Live”.
Buy the CD or DVD from Bryan Duncan or Lifeway Christian Bookstores or Family Christian Stores.
I highly recommend the DVD! You really get Bryan’s personality much more when you see him in concert, plus there are several bonus items on the DVD. It truly is worth the extra dough!
It’s easy to agree that forgiveness is something we should be free with when we’re on good terms with the people in our life, when we’re not feeling hurt or slighted or cheated.
“Yes,” we say, “we should forgive.”
But, forgiveness is not so easy when we are still feeling the pain someone has caused us. In some perverse way, we would rather feel the pain than to forgive and let it go.
I think we sometimes feel that we’re in the power position if we withhold forgiveness. Someone says, “I’m sorry. Please forgive me.” And we think that by holding back, we are denying something to the other person, so we’re in a superior position.
Is that really where you want to be?
Part 2, where Michael Franzese continues his story. From doing 29 months in solitary confinement, to announcing his brand new “Made Man” ministry. This is an incredible story of God’s power to restore a life that was devoted to “breaking the laws of God and man on a daily basis”, to a life dedicated to communicating the love of a forgiving God. Must listening!
This interview is amazing! Michael Franzese talks about how he was brought into New York City’s Columbo crime family, what “the life” is like, what he did to earn over $2 billion for the Mafia, and how that earned him millions of dollars per week. And that’s just the beginning. This is one podcast you HAVE to hear!
On Saturday night, there will be a Free-Style Motorcross Exhibition as well.
This is going to be fun, fun, fun! If you are in the southern California area, be sure to invite and take some friends who haven’t yet made Jesus their savior! Also, even if you are not in the area, please pray for the event and everyone involved.
I’ve attended the past two years, and I can tell you from personal experience, that hearts are touched and lives changed at the Harvest Crusades.
