In my conversation with Jonathan Su, we delved into the importance of maintaining physical health as we age, with a special focus on addressing chronic knee pain and overall body functionality. Jonathan, a physical therapist with extensive experience, shared his inspiring journey of overcoming a severe knee injury and emphasized how regular maintenance routines, akin to car maintenance, can help prevent pain and address muscle imbalances.

He stressed the importance of strength training after age 50 to counteract sarcopenia, offering practical tips like hamstring exercises, core strengthening, and using backpacks to stimulate bone density growth. Jonathan also introduced his books, such as 6 Minute Fitness at 60+ and 6 Minute Knee Pain Cure, which provide simple, effective routines designed for older adults. (available on Amazon)

His advice reassured me—and I hope many listeners—that it’s possible to build strength, improve posture, and maintain functionality at any age. Reflecting on my own challenges with injuries, I’m motivated to adopt his strategies to regain balance and strength while encouraging others to prioritize their health as well.

In today’s podcast episode, Dr. Ardavan Aslie, a seasoned spine surgeon with over 20 years of experience, sheds light on the controversial use of plates and screws for rigid fixation in surgeries. Dr. Aslie takes a critical look at the current standard practice of using plates and screws for rigid fixation, despite the use of different materials. He explains how this approach may not be as effective as it seems.

His new book is called 'Corporate Spine: How Spinal Surgery Went Off Track and How We Put it Right'. The book reveals new research into the surprisingly common practice of using pedicle screws in spine surgery despite overwhelming evidence that they are practically useless and actually cause harm down the road.

Dr. Aslie is a board-certified spine surgeon who earned his MD from New York Medical College and his spine surgery fellowship training at Harvard University. He completed his residency at New York’s famed St. Vincent’s Hospital while working with some of the world’s most renowned scoliosis surgeons.

My guest this week is Barb Hawken the go-to menopause fitness coach who believes that when it comes to transforming the middle aged woman's body, making simple tweaks in the kitchen and gym can cause their health to improve, and their confidence to soar! Barb works with high achieving career-minded women, helping them lose weight in menopause. Her unique, results-driven, custom program enables them to say goodbye to the weight gain, muscle loss and energy drain that can accompany this season of change.

Here are three takeaways from our conversation:

  1. Rise and Shine: Barb suggests waking up early and getting your workout done before other commitments arise. By establishing a morning routine, you set yourself up for success and ensure exercise becomes a non-negotiable part of your day.

  2. Consistency is Key: Developing a routine and taking actionable steps towards your fitness goals is crucial. Even small adjustments to your diet can lead to significant improvements in how you feel. The key is to stay consistent with both exercise and healthy eating for quicker and more sustainable results.

  3. Weight-Bearing Exercise: Barb highlighted the importance of weight-bearing exercise for bone and muscle health. Starting in your twenties is recommended, but it becomes even more important as you enter your thirties and beyond. Weight training can combat muscle loss during menopause and perimenopause and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Marc Perry started out with a normal weight of 165 lbs. After working long hours as a financial analyst mostly while sitting in his chair he realized that his weight had gone up to 200 lbs. It was at that moment that he saw that he had to make a change in his lifestyle. Marc started working out more often and created an efficient eating plan - that’s when the pounds came off. Next he helped his brother do the same, then he created a blog to share his story and his transformative plan. That was 15 years ago and the rest, as they say, is history.

In the podcast we talked a lot about how he works with “busy professional men” who want to shift their lives and transform their bodies. One of the amazing things is that they only work with their clients for the 12 weeks of the program, that’s all that’s needed for them to change their clients’ lives for the rest of their lives. If you want to know more about this bold way of working together you can listen to the podcast and then go to Marc’s website BuiltLean.com to find out more, get his Free Guide, and connect with him.

Time For a Hearing Test?

Today’s podcast is about one of my favorite subjects - Hearing. There’s a reason why it’s included in your 5 senses, that reason is because it is such an integral part of our health and our lives that we take it for granted until we start to lose it!

Jenna Marie Johnson is my guest today. She works with HearUSA (https://www.hearusa.com/) and lives in Montana. We had a great conversation about how important hearing is to our lives, how we have access to places where they can test it and correct it, and yet people still ignore it. Let me also say up front that if you are losing your hearing and you don’t get it corrected you can damage your brain, listen to the podcast to learn how.

I loved the description that Jenna told us on the podcast when people ask her if it’s really important to do something about their level of hearing - she tells them that with their hearing loss that it would be like her going home and putting in earplugs. She would not hear someone at the door, she’s have to turn up the volume on the TV, and you wouldn’t hear a water pipe burst in the house. All of those things are important to hear and be aware of and you wouldn’t know they are happening.

Jenna recommends that people start getting hearing exams when they hit 50 in order to establish a baseline and if it’s “normal” to go back every 2 years to get it checked again. If you go to reputable hearing center and/or medical center it won’t cost you anything and you will have peace of mind or you’ll get a hearing aid to hear what other people are actually saying to you. Be sure you listen to this podcast and go get a test if you haven’t had one before!

My guest this week is Fiona Pimentel. Fiona is a coach and we first met in a coaching program that we had both signed up to do. We talked about a variety of subjects all having to do with life, looking for balance in our lives, going through life changes, and finding a new purpose helping others deal with these life issues.

Fiona has been expanding her coaching from doing 1:1 sessions for women of all ages, to couples counseling, to running programs and online groups. We talked about how women’s and men’s lives are changing and how so much of it depends on how old the women and men are as to what if anything has changed. We also touched a bit on practicing self-love and support. Fiona’s FB Group is Called to Courage (like this episode) if any women are interested in joining the group you can DM Fiona Pimentel directly.

Also wanted to point out that this is Episode #200 of the Healthy Tips After 50 Podcast!! I want to thank all of you who listen -- leave a comment saying how long you've been listening and what you would like to hear more of!

This week’s podcast features Rebecca Allen, MD. Rebecca is a neuropsychiatrist who completed her residency and fellowship at Harvard in 2017. Her specialty is interventional psychiatry, including treatments such as Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Electroconvulsive Therapy, ketamine, and Vagus Nerve Stimulation. Her work has included research on quality of life in multiple sclerosis, sleep and memory, and authoring a book chapter on sleep for a Harvard textbook.

Our conversation covered a lot of ground (as usual) because Rebecca is currently participating in research on Vagus Nerve Stimulation, comparing techniques in brain stimulation, electro compulsive therapy for bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, and the other psychotic disorders. It’s quite a fascinating field and she is an expert with a lot of experience and education in this area. She is on the forefront and cutting edge of the current treatments and technology available which allows her to provide the best treatments available for her patients.

She can make suggestions but as with all fields of medicine it is ultimately up to the patient to make their own decisions. Her advice is to not just take what she says, go talk to other people, do some of your own research before making a decision about treatment. Very good advice in all things medical!

Rebecca is Partner and Director of Research at Seattle Neuropsychiatric Treatment Center, where she also teaches psychiatry residents from three training programs. Her leadership positions have included being President of the Washington State Psychiatric Association and President of the international Clinical TMS Society.

We talked about inflammation, how your body changes as you get older and you need to pay attention to that, and how there is so much negative info coming in via society and media and we need to evaluate it not just accept it. Today’s podcast interview is with Jeffrey Gross, M.D. a board-certified neurosurgeon who has expanded his practice to include anti-aging and cutting edge medicine. His bio from his website is below and I am including it because it’s a better summary than I could do on my own. I’m sure you’ll enjoy listening to our conversation as much as I did having it…

“Jeffrey Gross, M.D. turned down M.I.T. to study biochemistry and molecular cell biology at U.C. Berkeley. His research and medical journal publications have been cited over 800 times. After studying the complexities of the nervous system, and treating patients as neurosurgeon, he has returned to his roots in science by updating his training in regenerative medicine. He practices at the leading edge of the biological sciences in an effort to help others with less dependence on pharmaceuticals or surgery.”

Dr. Gross’ website is https://recellebrate.com -- there is more information there.

My guest this week is Doctor Bolad, a Board-Certified Physician in Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, and Internal Medicine, as well as a few other certifications and degrees. It is a very impressive list of educational accomplishments. All of which is to say that when he talks about heart and cardiovascular subjects one listens, as I did during our recent discussion.

Dr. Bolad explains what cardiology is, why it becomes more important as we get past 50 years old, the role of family medical histories, some of the symptoms we should watch out for, and quite a few other subjects that affect all of us “older” people. It was a really valuable discussion and I’m sure you’ll learn a lot from it.

If you’re interested in subscribing to Dr. Bolad’s website you can go here: https://www.doctorbolad.org/ There are blogs and videos about many different subjects and don’t forget that you can ask any question you want from there as well.

Chad Tackett is a personal health coach with a degree in Exercise Science, Health, & Nutrition from Oregon State University and has been a certified personal trainer & weight loss expert for almost 30 years. He started the world’s very first online weight loss program, Committed 100, in 1995 and he's been featured in more than 100 books, radio, and TV shows. Chad has helped more than 10,000 people online, showing them exactly how to activate their body's natural ability to burn fat 24 hours a day.

What was fun to find out was that the vast majority of his clients are over 50 and are women. We need to find him some more men to help - especially as there are definitely just as many overweight men as there are women (my editorializing).

I am sure that you will all enjoy the podcast and after you listen you can go to his website https://www.committed100.com/ to learn more and sign up for his program if it makes sense for you and your life.

My guest this week is Amy Lawrence – published author, healthy cooking and eating advocate, stroke survivor, tea room and retail tea shop owner. After gaining, and then losing, an extra 40 pounds, she became a healthy food blogger (Gourmet and Skinny). Then she read a book by Cookie Rosenbloom called Weight Loss Made Real and realized that she was an habitual eater which made it much easier to keep the weight off.

She did a call with Cookie’s group about food prep and how to do it and they loved it! That led to her starting her own membership and writing her own book. All of which is to explain what she’s talking about on this week’s podcast – The Power of Food Prep (Amy’s brand new book). Amy’s food prep ideas are different than most cooking / food books and it was so interesting to hear her talk about how to easily do food prep. This is one of my favorite interviews, I hope you enjoy! An interview from September 2020 with Mary Howick who spent almost 30 years in leadership positions with multi-national financial institutions. She is also a single mother which means she spent a lot of time balancing those two parts of her life.

She also decided to become a psychotherapist, Reiki Master and Isha Judd System facilitator at the same time. Then she got cancer and that changed her life (like it does for so many people). She retired from her corporate job and went to Uruguay for 3 years to study more intensely with Isha Judd who is an enlightened spiritual teacher.

Mary then returned to Ireland and trained as a coach using the 3 principles based on the work of Sydney Banks. Using these 2 systems she is now supporting people as a stress-management coach and her mission in life is to lead people into that space of inner peace beneath the chatter of the mind where they can access the enormous power and clarity of who they really are.

I like that mission so much I may copy some of it for my mission statement. I’m sure she’d be happy to share. You can contact Mary Howick on LinkedIn and Facebook.

This conversation with Sharon Strimling was very enjoyable and awakening. I loved her grounding and approachability. Sharon is a coach, consultant, and thought-leader. She works with people to access the clarity, well-being and success that already exists in their lives and careers.

We talked about how we get caught up in our thoughts and the feelings of those thoughts, and that it’s all happening inside of us, not outside from someone else or the world. Seeing that taking care of ourselves and living consciously really is an inside job.

Hope you enjoy the podcast and if you’d like to get in touch with Sharon you can contact her via email (sharon@sharonstrimling.com) or at her website (sharonstrimling.com).

Self-Care for Heart Health

A study published in the journal Health Psychology that I read about was the spark for this podcast. The study had found a connection between self-care and self-compassion with heart health. More self-care & compassion created less plaque buildup on their heart’s carotid artery walls - a major risk for developing cardiovascular disease.

The results confirmed that practicing better self-care was good for your heart irrespective of other heart related issues which I talk about in the short podcast. It also identified 3 main obstacles to doing self-care which I also talk about. Listen in and learn a lot!

I also suggested that if any of you want to connect with me to learn how I changed my life by learning to practice self-care & compassion for myself you can reach out via email at susan@healthytipsafter50.com or on FB Messenger, Susan E Rosin. Be sure to put self-care in the subject line and I will know to reply quickly.

What is Cryotherapy?

Today’s guest, Kyle Jones, is the co-founder and COO of iCRYO. He has been involved in health & wellness since becoming an athlete in high school, then continuing on through college, and after college when he won national gold medals in Competitive Power Lifting. He also worked as a Physical Therapist where he learned about how important rehab & recovery are.

He was first introduced to Cryotherapy in 2012 and as Kyle started to look more into it, he began to realize the amazing benefits Cryotherapy has to offer for all types of bodies. In 2015 he decided to open his first center and it was at that point that Kyle hired and trained a staff specifically for providing this service to the public.

We had an interesting conversation and I had a lot of questions about what Cryotherapy is, how it helps and with what kinds of services. I learned that inflammation is the biggest issue that their centers and Cryotherapy can help with and since that is the major cause of most physical issues I can see how iCRYO has become so popular so fast. Music can help people support and connect with others. It can help us to strengthen our own brains by learning and playing an instrument. It can also help you to remember where you parked your car or left your keys. All of these are in the podcast.

Signs or Symptoms?

Is there a difference between Medical Signs and Medical Symptoms? Turns out that there is ever since the 20th Century - before that time they were the same. It’s still pretty confusing to those of us who are not patients or observers but it turns out to not be as confusing as it seems.

Symptoms are what we feel but can’t always see. Signs point toward diseases, objective evidence of a disease, or a measure of a possible disease. I give some examples of both in the podcast to make it easier to understand the difference.

I also gave a short update on my Intuitive Coaching Practice - who I’m working with, why, and how you or someone you know can contact me to learn more (email me at susan@susanrosin.com). Cataracts Explained with Dr. Shamie

Today’s guest, Dr. Neda Shamie, is an Opthalmologist M.D. at The Maloney-Shamie Vision Institute in Los Angeles, CA. Most options actually give you better eye sight and you can choose what you want - better reading, better far vision, or a combination of them both. It’s like being given another 20+ years of clear vision.

Dr. Shamie also explained how important it is to get an annual eye examination, what to ask about, and what to tell your doctor about any issues you’re having. Integrative Medicine Conversation
An Interview with Aaron Hartman M.D.

This is one of my longer interviews because there was just so much to talk about and we really only skimmed the surface of the whole subject. Dr. Hartman is originally from and currently lives in Virginia where he is one of the rare Integrative Medicine doctors.

Dr. Hartman became interested in this area of medicine because of his first adopted daughter who had Cerebral Palsy. His daughter's health struggles forced him to confront an uncomfortable realization: Our current healthcare system doesn't have all of the answers. His wife, however, refused to give up hope. She ultimately pointed him to functional medicine. His daughter & other two kids began to thrive. After years in family practice, he felt called to make a dramatic shift.

In 2016 Dr. Hartman founded Richmond Integrative and Functional Medicine where he helps patients identify leverage points in key areas of their lifestyle & health that harness their body's remarkable power to heal and begin living the vibrant life they deserve. He has become the ‘go to’ doctor for difficult and hard cases in central Virginia. Here are some links to a free gift, his website & membership (listen to the podcast for more on this):

Are You Getting Enough B-12?

As we get older it can get harder to get all of the vitamins and minerals we need from our food. There are various reasons for that but mostly it has to do with less stomach acid to break down our food into essential vitamins.

One of those vitamins is B12. This podcast is a repeat from 2020 but it is just as important now as it was then. B12 helps us maintain and improve our red blood cells, nervous system, digestive system, and our production of DNA to name just a few. If that sounds important you’re right and it is. Some of the B12 deficiency symptoms that show that you need more in your body are depression, canker sores, brain fog, tingling in your legs and feet, and fatigue. If you have any of those symptoms you should go talk to your doctor and be sure to ask for a test to measure your level of B12.

If you are a vegan or a vegetarian there is a good chance you may be low on B12. Why is that? Well, it’s because B12 is found in animal products and you mostly likely don’t eat any. The best sources of B12 are in beef and fish (salmon & tuna mostly). Your best bet is to start taking a B12 supplement and don’t worry if you are only a little bit deficient because your body will absorb what it needs and passes the excess out in your urine.

If you have any specific questions about whether you need to take extra B12 ask your doctor for his/her advice!

The News Blues

So many of us have developed a love/hate relationship with the news reporting over the past few years and that caused us to develop The News Blues. It is a condition that afflicts people across the entire political spectrum. Negative news sells and watching it, reading it and following it on tv, radio, internet, and social media has given us all the “News Blues”.

It’s a condition like being overweight - we can go on a news diet just like we go on a food diet. The news business is feeding us negative information which is making us anxious, depressed, and stressed. It is affecting our health whether we realize it or not. In the podcast I share a few suggestions on how to dial this back which will help get our nervous systems back to a more normal level.

What do you think about eating mushrooms as a way to beat cancer? Sounds good to me. This podcast is about a few studies that looked at mushrooms and their connections to lower risks for premature death and cancers.

One study’s finding said that people eating 18 grams of mushrooms per day - equal to 1 medium white mushroom - had a 45% lower risk of cancer compared to those who didn’t eat any mushrooms. Listen in to more information in this short podcast! let me know if you eat mushrooms in the comments below!

Best Ways to Listen

Most people don’t do a very good job of listening to other people or even themselves. This podcast is about what best to do and not to do to become a better listener. These suggestions apply to conversations with friends, family, colleagues, and ourselves.

It really is amazing how wonderful it is to be truly listened to when you’re trying to get across how you’re feeling or what you’re doing. I talk about an exercise I did with a group of professionals who were blown away by what it felt like to be fully listened to by one other person. That’s how we can also feel when we make the effort to listen to ourselves.

Hope you listen well and enjoy!

Talking About Menopause With Dr. Cris Azzola

This week’s podcast is a discussion about Menopause. Dr. Cris Azzola and I talked about how overwhelming it can be, how unique it is to each of us, and how much healthier it is to view it as a stage of life not as a disease or condition to be controlled and/or managed.

One area we talk about is how many menopausal symptoms are also symptoms of different issues. For instance, women with ovarian and other types of cancer can have night sweats so be sure to talk with your doctor about your symptoms as you navigate through the years of menopause.

Watch for the next interview with Cris which will be about Andropause - the male version of Menopause. Should be very interesting and enlightening.

Problems with Hip Pain

This week’s podcast is a replay from 2019 but it’s just as important as it was the first time I posted it. We have all been sitting at our desks and/or in front of our computers more in the past year during Covid which has not been good for our hips.

So listen up and you’ll learn about why so many of us over 50 folks have hip issues. Issues like cartilage wear and tear, arthritis, lupus, bursitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. And of course, osteoporosis, and tendinitis.

There are so many different causes of hip pain which can lead to other more debilitating situations which is why it’s so important for us to take care of ourselves and our loved ones. Hope you enjoy and learn something helpful.

Why We Snore - David Sherazi, D.D.S.

Dave and I had a great conversation about TMJ (when you clench your teeth), snoring / sleep apnea, alzheimer’s, and how all of these relate from & to your overall health and wellness.

I know I learned a lot about all of these areas and it got me thinking about how to improve some of my issues, like TMJ and snoring while I’m sleeping on my back. I always enjoy learning new and valuable information especially when I can use some of it for myself or others I know.

Dr. Sherazi is based in Southern California and has 2 Therapy Centers there.

Do you take naps?

Today’s podcast is about taking naps and if is it good for you to do that. There are a lot of pros and cons mostly because you could be napping due to poor nighttime sleeping or you could have trouble sleeping at night because of the napping.

20 minutes seems the longest we should nap because after that your mind/body starts to think you’re going to sleep which is why you are drowsy when you wake up - just like getting woken up in the middle of the night.

Let me know if you like to take naps and for how long. I’m interested to know.

The American Diet Today

The American diet is not getting healthier - it’s getting unhealthier. The average daily calorie count that the “normal” American eats has increased from 2000 calories in 1970 to 2500 calories in 2019. It is not surprising as the 2018 level of meat, eggs, nuts, and grains was higher than the USDA’s 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans published in 2019.

This podcast walks through the USDA’s 2021estimates as to what food companies and farmers produce in different food areas. Things like meat, poultry, and seafood; cheese, ice cream and yogurt; added sugars, and fruits and vegetables. Lots of interesting information.

Let me know in the comments how you eat and what you think healthy eating means.

Good Gut Bacteria

This week’s podcast is is about Probiotics, what they are, how they work, and what they work for. Did you know that they are bacteria, live microorganisms, and they work best in conjunction with prebiotics which feed the probiotics. Many are packaged together in the same supplements.

Actually not as complicated as it sounds. They are found in many foods, things like yogurt and other fermented foods. They are particularly helpful dealing with many intestinal, urinary tract, and vaginal tract issues - especially with anything having to do with yeast.

If you are dealing with any of those issues talk to your doctor or healthcare professional to get their advice on which probiotics/prebiotics you should take and how to take it. Do you currently take any probiotics? Leave me a comment if you do…

Sleeping is one of those things that we don’t think too much about until we start experiencing issues with it. This podcast is about some of those issues and a few suggested solutions.

As we get older sleep patterns change and if we don’t sleep well or long enough it can affect our bodies and our brains. One of the things your body and brain do when you’re sleeping is to clean up all of the residue from the day. During sleep your body also reduces inflammation and C-Reactive Protein, lowers blood sugar levels, and kills harmful bacteria and viruses.

Not getting enough sleep can lead to weight gain, heart disease, and depression among other negative ramifications. The large majority of people need 7-8 hours of sleep a night but as I know from personal experience many of us only get 5.5-6.5 hours. I used to get the lower amount but now I get 7-8.

Other things covered in this podcast is your sleeping environment, snoring, supplements, blue-blocking glasses, and other things that can help you to sleep better.

Nutrient Needs & Aging - An Interview

Dr. Cris Azzola, N.D., is my guest again in today’s podcast for the second part of our discussion around how our bodies change as we age. The first podcast was about digestion and this podcast is about how our nutrient needs change, partly as a result of our digestive changes.

We talked about protein, iron, vitamins, calories (density and number of), muscle mass, exercise, and food combinations. I learned a lot about what foods to add to my diet and what to cut back on. Our bodies do change so much as we get past 50.

One of my big takeaways was that this is not a one size fits all kind of discussion - there are so many different things that can affect your nutrient needs. Some of those things arer your physical issues, what kind and how much exercise that you do, and your level of stress no name just a few. These are the kinds of things to talk about with your doctor or health advisor.

If you’d like to contact Dr. Azzola you can do that at her website www.DrAzzola.com or via email at Contact@DrAzzola.com The video of the podcast is available on YouTube https://youtu.be/_KtqiYbhwS4

Improving Memory & Focus

Everyone, but especially those of us over 50, is trying to find out how to improve our memories and our focus. And there are a lot of people and places looking at that subject. I was interested to find 2 newsletters with articles about it on their front pages this month.

One of them explained the 3 phases of memory - encoding, storage, and retrieval. The other newsletter gave an explanation of and suggestions about how to improve focus and concentration which results in better memory recall. As with so much else in life, it all works better to be calm, attentive to one thing at a time, and to add feeling to the memories as we create them.

There are also some other specific suggestions for increasing your focus and improving your memory. I learned a lot from both of these articles and I’m sure you will too! Enjoy!

Digestion & Age

Dr. Cris Azzola joined me for a talk about digestion and how it changes as we age. It was so informative and interesting to go deeper into the subject of how our bodies change, creating new ways for our digestion to be supported or not by specific types of foods.

Cris tells us about bitters and tart food, how it wakes up our senses, how taste and smell affects our saliva and enzymes, and the herbs and spices that can help our overall digestion. There is also information about how all of this affects how much we do or don’t eat as we age.

Then we talked about stomach acid and how important that is to the whole digestion process so we get all of the nutrients in our food. Cris explains how important it is to find out why someone is not digesting their food because there are many different causes of upset stomachs as we age, sometimes too much acid and sometimes not enough.

You’ll learn a lot by listening / watching this podcast with Dr. Cris Azzola, N.D. If you would like to contact her you can go to her website at www.DrAzzola.com or email her directly at Contact@DrAzzola.com

What is Calorie Density?

Have you heard of calorie density before? I hadn’t and I was surprised as I’ve been a student of healthy food and diets for over 30 years. I was especially surprised to learn that it is one of the main reasons that we overeat.

Calorie density is also known as energy density (hadn’t heard of that either) and is a measure of the calorie content of food relative to its weight or volume. The usual measure is the number of calories per 3.5 ounces (100 grams) of food.

Fruits and vegetables are examples of low calorie dense foods. They are also examples of foods that can fill up your plate at the same time as providing lower calorie totals. Another interesting fact is that low calorie dense foods are not necessarily low in carbohydrates so you can end up eating healthier foods with fewer calories leading to weight loss. A perfect trifecta!

I quote from the Nutrition Health Newsletter which is published by CSPI, a non-profit who has been “America’s Science-Based Food and Health Watchdog for Nearly 50 Years. You can check them out at cspinet.org

Revisiting Benefits of Red Wine

I have re-recorded a podcast about the many benefits of drinking one glass of red wine each day. There are many studies which I talk about that show the positive benefits of red wine. It has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer behavior in your body as well of benefit in the fight against cardiovascular disease.

I talk about studies that have shown it reduces the risk of diabetes, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, and stroke along with heart disease, obesity, and infectious diseases. It also provides food for beneficial gut bacteria that stops the creation of other bacteria which causes atherosclerosis.

There are many other studies that I cover in this podcast related to colorectal cancer, stem cells, inflammation, aging, blood vessels, and blood clotting. Enough with the lists - listen to the podcast and get all of the details. But remember that this applies to 1 glass for women and 1-2 for men a day, more than that and you will lose the health benefits. So, enjoy and don’t overdo!

New Dietary Guidelines for Americans

Every 5 years the US Dept of Health & Human Services along with the Dept of Agriculture (USDA) are required to publish a new “Dietary Guidelines for Americans”. The 2020-2025 Edition is out and I am giving you all a shortened version of the 164 page document.

There were some changes made this year that makes this more usable and applicable than previous years’ editions. For instance it now includes people who have chronic diseases and/or are at risk for chronic diseases - e.g. cancer, obesity, and heart disease.

They also have changed their focus to “dietary-patterns” which makes it much more flexible for people who eat according to cultural, geographic, taste-preferences, or budgets. Lastly, they have changed it to be more responsive to lifespans and where you are in your individual lifespan. What this means is that the dietary patterns are applicable and vary from infant through to old age.

The Guidelines are split into 4 different guidelines which much detail in each in the full report. The Executive Summary gives a high level description of each which is helpful so you know where to look for what’s interesting to you.

You can find the full report as well as the Executive Summary at DietaryGuidelines.gov

Talking Toxins With Dr. Cris

This show marks the return of Dr. Cris Azzola, a licensed naturopath in San Francisco. Cris is going to come on the show on a regular basis to talk about different topics.

We thought that talking about toxins and toxicity would be relevant after last year’s wild fires in so many parts of the US and the world, Covid-19, and the chance of more wildfires starting in the spring again. We also talked about environmental toxins and how our body does or doesn’t deal with those.

Cris talked about the different kinds of toxins, how our bodies deal with and clear toxins as well as how our bodies can get overloaded and overwhelmed (like during the fires). She also gave us some specifics about body organs and systems (like the hormonal system).

We talked about how to help clear toxins, how some supplements interact with each other which can cause toxic reactions, and be careful about self-prescribing to take clear toxins out of your body. Cris did a nice job summarizing our discussion and best take-aways from our conversation.

You can also find an informative (quick read) by Cris on Medium that’s called Detoxing After the 2020 Wildfires, you can read it here on Medium. To get in touch with Dr. Azzola you can go to her website www.DrAzzola.com or email her directly at Contact@DrAzzola.com

Growth of NAFLD Disease

Do you know what NAFLD is? NAFLD stands for Non-Alcohol Fatty Liver Disease and It is an umbrella term for a range of liver conditions affecting people who drink little to no alcohol. The main characteristic of NAFLD is too much fat stored in your liver cells.

NAFLD is not commonly known even though about 25% of the US population has it and it is a risk factor of a number of even worse illnesses / diseases. There are not many symptoms and it is not usually found during physicals or other medical examinations. Sometimes it is seen in the background of other ultrasounds or MRI’s and caught that way.

NASH is an aggressive form of NAFLD and results in damage similar to the liver disease caused by heavy alcohol use. The best ways to reduce your risk of developing NAFLD and NASH is to eat a healthy diet and exercise.

The Mediterranean Diet in particular is recommended by most health professionals for NAFLD, NASH, and many other diseases. I’ve talked about the Med Diet in previous podcasts that you can find in the archives.

Worse Than the Dirty Dozen

Today’s show brings us up to date on one of the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) dirtiest food. They reported on the Department of Agriculture’s 2020 pesticide residue tests on fruits and vegetables and for the first time the DOA included raisins in their tests.

When the EWG compared the raisin results with those on the Dirty Dozen list they found that it was worse than all of them and would rank #1 if it was included in the list - which it isn’t because it is considered to be a processed food. 99% of conventional raisins and 91% of organic raisins tested positive for two or more pesticides.

The EWG’s recommendations were to eat organic raisins if you want or have to have raisins but otherwise try and eat prunes (especially organic prunes) instead.

Vitamin D and Cancer

2-3 years ago there were a couple of research studies published called the VITAL study which looked at the the affect of Vitamin D and Omega-3’s on almost 26,000 men and women over 50. All were free from cancer and cardiovascular disease at the start of the study which ran from 2011 until the end of 2017.

The men and women in the study were randomly assigned to different groups - Omega-3 + Vitamin D, Omega-3, Vitamin D, and placebos. There were some interesting Vitamin D related results in the original study’s analysis that showed a small difference in the Vitamin D group having to do with metastatic and fatal cancers.

A group went back last year to do a secondary analysis on that same group of Vitamin D vs placebo participants. What they found was a significant difference between the Vitamin D and placebo in the normal BMI (Body Mass Index) group but not so much in the overweight group.

Makes me think that staying at a healthy weight and taking Vitamin D is a pretty good way to increase your odds of not developing metastatic and fatal cancer. Listen in to learn more…

Maintaining Your Balance

This podcast is about keeping your balance physically, not emotionally, better known as not falling and hurting yourself. I have a lot of experience with falling, not purposefully, and usually with some resulting bumps, bruises, and once a broken clavicle.

There are a lot of reasons that people take falls and I talk about most of them. Things like losing muscle mass from aging, medications like anti-depressants and antihistamines, some cognitive disorders like Alzheimers and dementia. Arthritis and osteoarthritis and low levels of Vitamin D can all cause falls to happen. There are a few others that I talk about as well.

Then there are a number of exercise programs (like yoga & pilates) I suggest as well as what not to wear, do, or consume. My last suggestion is to not only think about your own life but to watch for these issues in the lives of family members and friends and help them to do proactive self-care to ward off falls and the resulting issues that can impact their lives.

I hope this helps keep this in everyone’s consciousness as we get older and our parents get older because one fall can drastically alter a person’s life and the lives of those around them.

Do You Have SAD This Winter?

This week’s podcast deals with the issue of Seasonal Affective Disorder - better know as SAD. At this point in time there is no good understanding of the causes of SAD, that makes it very difficult to find solutions for managing it.

SAD is a disorder that occurs during “winter” time (i.e. short days and long nights). There are various treatments available but none of them work for everyone who tries them. There are light boxes that simulate the sun, there are anti-depressants (since this is considered to be a depressive disorder), and behavioral therapy. Some people try nutritional solutions but those have not been found to be valuable.

Pay attention to how you’re feeling during the winter because cases of SAD could be worse than usual if it gets combined with the Covid-19 related depressions that so many people are already feeling. I go through the most common symptoms in the podcast and they are very similar to the ones for “normal” depressions. Support yourself, your family, friends, and co-workers if they are having a harder time than usual during these winter months.

Mushrooms as Food and Medicine

Today’s guest is Jeff Chilton, the owner of Nammex (North American Medicinal Mushroom Extracts). Jeff’s interest in mushrooms started when he was a student at the University of Washington in the late 1960’s. He became a mushroom grower in 1973 and in 1989 he founded his company Nammex which raises organically certified mushrooms for the Nutritional Supplement industry.

We had a very interesting (and long) conversation which I’m sure you’ll enjoy if you like to eat mushrooms and/or take mushroom supplements. I know that I sure enjoyed it and I learned a lot from it as well. It’s always so valuable to be able to talk to an “expert” and Jeff is definitely an expert on everything mushroom. He explained how and why mushrooms are not a vegetable nor a plant - they are in between in what Jeff calls "their own kingdom".

I also learned why I’ve had allergic reactions to some mushroom supplements I’ve tried and what to look for when I go shopping for one again. We also talked about the many different kinds of mushrooms both to eat and to supplement with. Jeff explained how mushrooms are grown, their nutritional values, and how best to cook them. It really was a fascinating hour and will be well worth your time to listen to it all the way to the end.

To contact Jeff or his company directly you can go to his website https://www.nammex.com/

Live a Stress-Free Day

This week’s podcast is another short but valuable show. I have collected a number of ways that we can, in a short amount of time calm down and let go of whatever stress we are feeling.

You’ll notice that all of them do essentially the same thing - break the thought and feeling that is keeping us tied up in our heads. They are all versions of time-outs - like we give our family members except these are some you can give yourself as well. Pick out a couple that appeal to you and try them.

I guarantee it will help you now and when we all get back to “normal” (whatever that looks like).

Next week I will be posting an interview I did with an expert on mushrooms - lots of interesting info in that one…

Dr. Jay - The Brain Doctor

Dr. Jay Sordean has over 40+ years of experience as an acupuncturist, herbalist, nutritional therapist, homeopath, and wellness consultant. His office is in Berkeley, California but his clients come from all over the US. It was a very interesting interview although we had a bit of a disconnection towards the beginning of it.

Dr. Jay related how he contracted leprosy during a trip to Asia and was treated by a homeopathic doctor in Nepal who gave him herbs which cured it. He moved to California to become a licensed acupuncturist at a time when acupuncture was not as accepted or popular as it is now.

We also talked about a few of Dr. Jay’s clients they each had different and extremely interesting medical issues which Dr. Jay was able to identify and then heal. These were some really amazing stories.

He has written 3 books - all having to do with the brain - and we spoke about his deep knowledge about the brain as well as his experience with successfully treating brain problems.

If you are interested in contacting Dr. Jay about medical issues you can join his FB Group “brain wealth & longevity”, answer 3 questions and you’ll be in. The group is filled with videos, health tips for maintaining your brain, and exercises.

Can Medical Hypnosis Help You?

That’s the question I address in this podcast. Medical Hypnosis has become a much more respected tool in the medical toolbox. In most people it can help with:

  • phobias and PTSD
  • hot flashes
  • pain control
  • insomnia
  • quitting smoking
  • overeating and obesity
  • plus many more

We all grew up watching comedy skits or movies where someone is hypnotized and then sent out to do something dastardly which they can’t help themselves from doing. Makes for good drama or comedy but it’s not true in real life. You can’t be hypnotized to do something against your will. And indeed even Medical Hypnosis won’t work very well if you are not aligned with the treatment.

I talk about a study involving 2 groups of women who are suffering from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). IBS has no known treatment at this point in time so the study group was looking to see if Medical Hypnosis could be a valuable treatment. You’ll hear about the treatment protocol they used and how they used MRI scans to compare results.

The question of where/how to find a qualified Medical Hypnosis Practitioner is an important one and I make a few suggestions at the end. I mention the 2 major Hypnosis Associations and said I would include their websites here in the show notes - you can find them down below. But first I want to say that I do answer the question, Can Medical Hypnosis Help You? at the end of the podcast and I’m sure you have figured out that I think the answer is yes, but it really is something you need to follow up on yourself to see if it actually does help you.

From Medicine to Wellbeing Wednesdays

My guest today is Giles P Croft, a former NHS (National Health Service, UK) surgeon who stepped aside from clinical practice for a decade to explore a number of career paths, including health informatics, cycling journalism, public speaking and high street retail with his wife.

He is now back in the healing profession, tackling the root cause of chronic mental stress and its many harmful effects by helping clients reconnect to their natural, inbuilt state of health and happiness, without the need for prescriptions, coping strategies, or time consuming self-care practices. He works and lives in the Brecon Beacons National Park, Wales, with his wife and 6 year old daughter.

We talked a bit about Giles’ wonderful monthly YouTube stream, Wellbeing Wednesdays, from his wife’s wool/yarn store. We also had an interesting, valuable conversation about the different ways of approaching health & wellness. Is it a strict approach that only looks at physical & maybe mental health or, as we agreed, do we widen our vision/imagination to use the World Health Organization’s 1948 definition of health:

“Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

Listen in to our very interesting and enlightening conversation about this and other ways of looking at and living life. Pertinent links to Giles’ program, website, and social media contacts are below:

▪ Looking to health, rather than disease
▪ What gets in the way of health & wellbeing?
▪ The incredible healing power of our bodies and our minds
▪ The psychological immune system nobody told us about
▪ Our greatest super-power
▪ Finding wellbeing in the present moment
▪ Why we all like different stuff, and how completely life-changing that is
▪ A bit of evolutionary neuro-biology
▪ Different experiences of health

As we get older it can get harder to get all of the vitamins and minerals we need from our food. There are various reasons for that but mostly it has to do with less stomach acid to break down our food into essential vitamins. One of those vitamins is B12.

B12 helps us maintain and improve our red blood cells, nervous system, digestive system, and our production of DNA to name just a few. If that sounds important you’re right and it is. Some of the B12 deficiency symptoms that show that you’re needing more in your body are depression canker sores, brain fog, tingling in your legs and feet, and fatigue.

If you have any specific questions about you and B12 ask your doctor and get the “official” scoop on it. Hope you enjoy the podcast - let me know what your experience has been with B12!

An MDMA Love Letter

Charley Wininger is a psychotherapist in private practice, and the author of "Listening to Ecstasy: The Transformative Power of MDMA", a story of his life and marriage, that he calls An MDMA Love Letter. Licensed as a Psychoanalyst as well as a Mental Health Counselor, he specializes in relationships and communication skills, and has been treating couples and individuals in his NYC office for over 30 years.

I asked Charley to come on HTA50 to talk about Aging and Ageism. Our discussion ranged to quite a few different subjects that were all related to aging - some of those subjects were opportunities to get more involved in life and learn new things, volunteering with organizations that are appreciative of extra help, and physical and mental changes that we all go through as we age.

Charley has also been featured in The New York Times and Newsday (a NY area newspaper) as “The Love Doctor”. If you listen in you’ll find out what his experience has been as a couples and individuals therapist. It was an interesting and enjoyable conversation which I think you’ll also enjoy.

Get Some Exercise Everyday!

Today’s podcast is all about exercise and how important it is (or should be) in our lives. Especially with all of us limited to exercising outside or in our house/apartment (at least that’s how it is here in California).

Exercise is so, so important to our health, under regular circumstances! It’s how we keep our hearts, lungs, muscles, brains, … working at their best. Today that translates into having a better chance of surviving COVID if we get it. But it also means that we will live longer to spend more time with loved ones.

You can find groups, classes, workouts, equipment, etc., online and on TV/cable. There are books, magazines, and social media filled with information and teachers. You can do yoga, zumba, tai chi, and every other kind of exercise - so go out and do it, now!

I do walking, floor exercises, and weights. Let me know in the comments what kind of exercise you like and actually are doing these days.

The Naturopathic Path to Health

My podcast guest this week is Dr. Cris Azzola, ND. Dr. Cris is a licensed naturopathic doctor in San Francisco, CA, and is a descendant from a long line of physicians who believed in balancing conventional medicine with natural healing techniques.

From early childhood, she was inspired by her family’s dedication to helping others and became curious about the natural remedies her family used to stay healthy, always wondering “how grandma’s stuff worked”. That’s why she decided to go the naturopathic route instead of the traditional MD route.

Cris specializes in helping people prevent and treat chronic conditions, including stress and burnout, and re-optimize their health. We had a great conversation about the different types of conditions and complaints that she has been treating during Covid and before. I really liked the way that she supports each person she sees as the unique person they are tries to make their healing journey as engaging as possible.

Another area we talked about was food and how important healthy food is to keeping us strong. She suggested looking at the book The World’s Healthiest Foods by George Mateljan if anyone is specifically interested in learning more about different foods. Per Cris’ recommendation, the book provides a great index and helps us identify foods high in specific nutrients and other details. Reminder to Take Care of Your Hearing

This week’s show is a rebroadcast of one from the middle of 2019. I’m running it again because hearing and hearing loss is such an important subject, especially during this pandemic. We are all staying close to home and even more so for us older people. We are the ones who are most at risk for hearing loss and not getting it checked regularly and/or taken care of can make us more vulnerable to brain issues.

There are many studies showing that people with hearing loss who don’t get some kind of “intervention” such as a hearing aid or implant tend to have increased brain shrinkage and are more likely to develop dementia.

Hearing loss can be caused by ear wax or fluid buildup in the ear, by a punctured ear drum, various health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, etc., and heredity / genetics. The long term effects of hearing loss can be self-isolation, faster decline of cognitive abilities, and as I said previously dementia.

Any one of those items should be enough of a reason to get your hearing checked on a regular basis or when you feel like you’re not hearing as well as you used to. The latter is what got me to go and I’ve been wearing a hearing aid for more than 3 years now - it made a big difference in my life and it could in yours as well.

Getting Stronger and Healthier As We Age

My guest today is Joseph Oniwor. Joe is a pro arena football player turned transformation trainer who has been in the fitness industry for 28 years. His mission is to help women 48 years old and older to take back control over their bodies while they are dealing with the energy loss and weight gain that typically comes along with menopause.

Listen in as we talk about what family and personal health issues brought him to become a health coach and to work with menopausal women in particular. I know from personal experience that we can be a bit moody and temperamental during that age.

Joe and I also talked about how to keep your fitness and strength during Covid and exercising at home. He has some very helpful suggestions for how to set up a kind of gym in a small space inside your own home.

Continuing, we talked about how people need to find a “why” for making healthy changes and choices in their lives. Switching to healthy foods, starting or continuing an exercise regime, while creating and maintaining a mindset that allows them to confidently take care of themselves first in their lives (one of my favorite topics).

This podcast is one of my longer ones but I think you’ll find it full of good advice and information. Let me know what you think. If you’d like to get in contact with Joe I’ve added his website and other specific information about some of his programs and free information below.

Coffee & Caffeine - Are They Healthy For Us?

I read an article about coffee and the health benefits of it which aroused my curiosity and led to this week’s podcast subject - Coffee & Caffeine. I found quite a few recent studies that showed the health benefits of coffee and especially of caffeinated coffee. The only bad kind of coffee is very hot coffee - drinking that can increase your risk of developing esophageal cancer.

Otherwise it can lower your risk for multiple kinds of cancer, there’s a list in the podcast and the relative amount in each. If you drink unfiltered coffee on a regular basis it can cause your cholesterol to rise. There have also been studies looking at the association of coffee and gallstones, with poor cognitive functioning, and with high blood pressure.

Coffee is considered to be a food and at this point I would venture to say a health food. I certainly can’t make it through my day without a mug or two of it and after doing this podcast I’m going to start drinking even more caffeinated coffee as well. Hope you enjoy your cup of coffee.

Cruciferous Vegetables and Fibre - How Much to Eat?

Results from 2 studies in the UK both dealing with the impact of vegetables and/or fruit in the diet. The first shows the relation between higher amounts of cruciferous vegetables in one’s diet and a lower rate of abdominal aorta calcification.

In the study a group of women over 70 years old eating 1/4 cup or more of cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, or cauliflower were 46% less likely to have aortic calcification. And having aortic calcification has been shown to make it more likely that you would have a heart attack or stroke.

The second study questions how much of an impact some of the common dietary advice actually has on one’s health and specifically your gut. Things like eat five-a-day fruits & vegetables or even what five we should pick to eat. Most of this study had to do with the colon and specifically the lining of the colon.

There are a few medical terms that were included - terms like terminal ileum (where the small intestine intersects with the large intestine) and proximal colon (first and middle areas of the colon). The wrap-up advice that the study writers include is that at this point in time we should all follow a Mediterranean diet plus coffee. Sounds like good and yummy advice to follow!

Kari Klein - Changing Her Message and Her Vocation

My guest on this week’s podcast is Kari Klein. Kari was a chiropractor for 16 years before she decided that she wanted to work with people from a more whole body/mind point of view and not just specific aches and pains. To help people to live from a deeper sense of well being.

Some of the areas we talked about included looking at health & wellness as encompassing not just physical and mental health but also how mindset and inner wisdom are basic integral parts of our lives. Kari saw that a lot of her patients were exhausted from trying to fix specific aches and pains instead of looking at their body and mind as one whole entity that needed to exist in balance which would bring them better overall health.

We continued our discussion talking about how we all need to have more curiosity about everything in life including our health, wellness, and how we look at ourselves and the world. This had led her to spend a year studying cellular biology and see that each cell is like a universe in and of itself. Be sure to listen to that part of the interview at minute 30 of the podcast.

Overall, it was a very interesting and enlightening conversation and I hope that you all enjoy it. The best place to contact Kari is on her Facebook profile at https://www.facebook.com/thislifekariklein.

Multi-Subject Podcast

As the title says, this podcast is made up of 5 different short subjects. There were so many new and interesting studies that had been published that I thought it would be a good change from the longer one subject podcasts and the interviews I’ve been doing recently.

The different subjects are:
1) Chemotherapy and breast cancer
2) Covid-19 and its impact on loneliness
3) Gender and Alzheimer’s
4) Exercise for back pain
5) Soy and heart problems I

hope you find these to be as interesting and valuable as I did, especially in relation to those of us who are over 50 and trying to stay healthy, well, and active in mind and body.

I also gave an update on my training as a transformational coach and how I am offering pro bono (free) coaching sessions in order to gain more experience. If you are interested in having a free coaching session please contact me at susan@susanrosin.com Thanks for listening!!

How Relaxation Makes You Healthier

My guest today is Jeff Kelton, PhD, self-described incessant wanderer and author of An Insider’s Guide to the Art of Deep Relaxation. We had a very good conversation about his background and grounding as a clinical psychologist, consultant, and nowTransformation Coach.

Jeff also created his own process where he guides “leaders, truth seekers, and creatives to find and use their “Inner GPS” to navigate their journey in life”. The process is called GlobalWalkabouts and he has had much success in helping people to gain a connection to self that “provides greater peace and inner knowing of what’s next in their lives”.

In our discussion Jeff shares what he has learned about himself and about serving others and particularly about the value of deep relaxation in the cultivation of Whole Body Presence. Relaxation is also a way that we can manage stress and any discomforts of daily living that people (particularly those of us over 50) are feeling. He has a Facebook Group that he invited all of you to join (I’m already a member) to discover more about the experience of truly relaxing. The group is called Art of Deep Relaxation and the link is https://www.facebook.com/groups/1640456862773196

Jeff’s book is available on Amazon (“An Insider’s Guide to the Art of Deep Relaxation” https://www.amazon.com/dp/1086230140/ but he offered to send a free PDF copy to anyone who sends an email referencing this podcast and requesting the PDF. The email address to use is globalwalkabouts@gmail.com And if anyone has questions or wants to get more information you can also contact Jeff at the same email to set up a time to have a chat and learn more.

Reducing Food Loss and Food Waste

We human beings produce a lot of food waste and loss. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is observing their first International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste on September 29. It will be an online event.

To learn more go to this link: http://www.fao.org/platform-food-loss-waste/events/detail/en/c/1269190/
To register to attend go to this link: https://fao.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_qNIr9R8wRtWGHv5ExXPjQw

The FAO and the USDA have both committed their organizations to cutting in half the current amount of food waste and loss by 2030. This is a very aggressive goal but it’s something that needs to be done to help slow down climate change. In the podcast I explain how the FAO has created 2 new metrics which will be used by the FAO and USDA for measuring food loss and food waste going forward.

The current level of food waste and food loss produces 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gas that goes up into the earth’s atmosphere which comes out of the landfills from the rotting food. The FAO is intent on increasing the efficiency in the way food is produced, distributed, and consumed.

In January 2020 the USDA released a report identifying most of the supply chain factors leading to 30-40% of our food supply being wasted. Among these are supermarkets and restaurants not wanting to buy food in that doesn’t meet their quality and appearance requirements. I understand but I think we (including me) are going to have to get over this.

Lastly I go through quite a few ways that we as consumers can lower our own levels of food loss and waste. They aren’t hard to do and they make a lot of sense. I hope they help you to contribute to bringing this global crisis under control.

On a totally different subject, at the end of the podcast I let everyone know that as part of my celebration of the fall season I am giving away free coaching sessions to the first 15 people who email me at susan@susanrosin.com mentioning the podcast and the offer and telling me what they are doing to help lower their food waste. I look forward to connecting with you soon.

Health & Wellness Coach Cheryl Borchardt

My guest this week, Cheryl Borchardt, is a Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach and National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach. She helps individuals calm bothersome symptoms associated with chronic disease and autoimmune conditions by helping them get their lifestyle and gut healthy.

We talk about how her own personal journey to good health led her to become a health coach working with integrative and functional medicine physicians. Her specialty areas are dealing with chronic health and autoimmune conditions.

Our discussion covers a lot of different issues that Cheryl has dealt with personally and with her clients. Food issues, meal making, and challenge diets; motivation that comes from a couple of little wins in feeling better; working with patients and their doctors to modify or stop medications.

And of course, we talked about Covid and how it has changed some of the things she’s helping people with. We talk as well about how it hasn’t particularly affected her practice as she was already all online before Covid hit.

Cheryl also talks about helping people who are over 40 and over 60 and the impact that self-care improvements can make in their lives. The way that just paying attention to what we’re doing and eating can stop the fatigue, help us lose the extra weight we’ve been carrying around, and/or adjusting their medications that don’t play well together.

A Full, Interesting, and Meaningful Life

Mary Howick spent almost 30 years in leadership positions with multi-national financial institutions.

We talk about all of this in more detail in the podcast. Let me know if you find her life and mission as inspirational as I do. In fact, I like that mission so much I may copy some of it for my mission statement. I’m sure she’d be happy to share. You can contact Mary on LinkedIn or Facebook.

How Good is Your Balance?

As we age our bodies get weaker and then our balance starts to get worse as well. Once that happens we have a tendency to take a fall. Falling is one of the main reasons that older (over 65) people end up in the emergency room and the hospital and that every 19 minutes an “older adult” in the U.S. dies from a fall. Scary isn’t it?

This is also a huge financial burden on the U.S. Medicare system. It can also become a vicious cycle once people start taking falls - they get weaker and go down again. We all need to stop this cycle before we get caught in it.

The podcast covers most of the many physical issues that can negatively affect our balance. There are diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, inner ear issues from calcium crystals moving around, medications that lower your blood pressure too much or just naturally having low blood pressure. It can even be something as simple as getting a new pair of bi-focal glasses.

The important thing is to be aware of these issues and to always ask your doctor if your medications can affect your balance or interact with some other medication you already take. Then it’s important to keep up your fitness by doing things like yoga or tai chi and to also do strength exercises that are specifically designed to improve your balance. I go through 2 different balance exercises in detail at the end of the podcast so you don’t have any excuse to not start improving your balance now.

As always, leave me a comment here or on my website and let me know if you have any other exercises you like to do to “stay in balance”…

Yoga During the Pandemic

This week's podcast is a rebroadcast of an interview I did with Louise Tyrrell back when the Covid-19 sheltering started. I think that it is just as valuable to revisit the information and Louise's Free 7-Day Yoga Challenge.

Louise is an Inspirational Speaker, Yoga Teacher, and the founder of ZenLife Yoga & Wellness Retreats. We had a very interesting conversation about her life and the ongoing Shelter In Place and Quarantine that we are all living under. (Louise lives in Ireland)

She talks about a car accident she had in her 20’s and how yoga literally helped her to be able to walk again. It’s an amazing story of recovery and of how circumstances can lead you to what will become your life’s work. We also talk about a period of depression that she had after her father died and how she used her knowledge and training to bring herself back into balance.

Louise is currently offering a Free 7-Day Video Yoga Challenge on her website that you can conveniently take without having to leave your house. Here’s the link to sign up for her 7-Day Yoga Challenge.

And be sure to check out her website full of information about her programs and other products at this link.

What Song Makes You Get Up and Dance?

For me I love almost any kind of music and it makes me feel good to know that there are positive, physical benefits from listening (and dancing) to it.

I talk about an NIH-funded music and health initiative. It’s so exciting to learn about some wonderful results they are getting from their research into Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and stroke recovery.

There are also interesting updates related to the grieving process, using music to help be more productive, and learning how music affects the brain.

Music can help people support and connect with others. It can help us to strengthen our own brains by learning and playing an instrument. It can also help you to remember where you parked your car or left your keys. All of these are in the podcast.

Hope you enjoy it! Let me know in the comments what you found most interesting or helpful. And let me know

Where Are the Minorities and Women in Clinical Trials?

This podcast is about something that was mandated to be changed/fixed in 1997 and, although it’s a little bit better, it is still broken. What I’m talking about are the clinical trials that try out a new medication or new procedure to see if it’s safe and does what it says it’s supposed to do.

It is supposed to treat an illness or a condition that can mean the difference between living a longer, easier, and more fulfilling life or being in pain, disabled, or perhaps having dementia. But the issue here is that medications and treatments affect everyone a little differently and that is especially true across different genders and ethnic minorities.

The people who make up the trial group should be reflective of the population at large - that covers age, gender, and ethnicity. For instance women make up more than 50% of the population and the latest representation figures from a survey of clinical trials is 26% and another is 30%. That has led to issues from some negative side effects on how medications were prescribed. For example amounts and ways of taking them.

At the moment the editorial boards of journals who make the decisions about what trials get published is even more white male than the trial populations are which is even scarier. It is changing but not nearly fast enough. In the meantime, the advice I give in the podcast is that if you are a woman and/or a minority and your doctor wants to give you some medication or to have a procedure ask him/her if it was studied on a person like you and how did that person do. If he/she doesn’t know then have them find out before you fill a prescription or get a procedure.

The latter part of the podcast is all about berries - how good they taste and how good they are for you. I talk about the different things contain - things like flavonols, flavonoids, fiber, and Vitamin C. There are more in the podcast. I also give you some ideas about to freeze them so you can eat them all year round. We love having them in our cereal or just by themselves. Now is a good time to freeze some to eat during the off season.

And if you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed please reach out to me and we can get on a call so I can help you to feel better. You can contact me at my email - susan@susanrosin.com

THE SILENT HEART ATTACK

There is something called a Silent Heart Attack (SMI) and there are a lot of people who have one. Depending on the studies or the source it is thought that up to 50% of all heart attacks could be SMI’s.

SMI stands for Silent Myocardial Infarction, and a Myocardial Infarction the scientific name for a heart attack - so SMI is a silent “heart attack”. Makes sense right?? I had never heard of an SMI before but now that I have it is definitely on my radar to watch with myself and those around me.

The short explanation is that it either has no symptoms or it has milder versions of the normal heart attack symptoms. Those symptoms are:
- pressure, tightness, pain, squeezing, or aching in your chest
- nausea, indigestion, heartburn, or abdominal pain
- cold sweat
- shortness of breath
- lightheadedness or sudden dizziness
- fatigue

There are a number of studies I reference and most of them have shown that even if you don’t think you’ve had a SMI that if you did by 5-10 years later you could have the same myocardial scars that someone with a traditional heart attack has.

In addition I reference a couple of sleep studies that have found links to cardiovascular disease which is important to heart health as well. You should listen to the podcast for all of the info as it’s very important for us all (especially we “older” people) to know.

At the end of the podcast I let everyone know that if anyone listening is feeling stressed and upset from the current period of Covid-19 uncertainty I am offering a free coaching session to help you move more easily through this time. You can contact/message me on my healthy tips after 50 website or my Facebook profile or FB HTA50 podcast page.

Living With Uncertainty

This show is a little more on the psychology side of things and has to do with what I have been seeing and feeling over the past few months. It started before Covid flared up but became even more true and insightful for me after Covid started.

We are all experiencing a lot of anxiety and stress (as I’ve been talking about quite a lot in my podcasts) and I’ve covered some of the physical manifestations of that in today’s show.

But I also get into the basic issues causing our stress which has to do with our fear around all of the uncertainty because we always thought before now that there was a lot of certainty.

Well, there wasn’t any more certainty before Covid than we have now — we just bought into the “illusion of certainty” that we were brought up with.

I have found that that seeing through that illusion is the best way to live with it. Because I know that I’m okay and I can handle anything that comes along because I know that as a human being I’m built for that uncertainty - that’s how human beings have made it to now.

This is a psychology that was first seen and communicated by Sydney Banks and there are a lot of people who are sharing it throughout the world now. It’s known as Inside-Out Thinking and/or the 3 Principles. I find it to be similar in many ways with Buddhism and other Eastern Philosophies as it is centered on your innate wisdom or buddhanature.

I mention and quote from Victor Frankl’s book “Man’s Search for Meaning” in the podcast which is a well known and well respected book on how he survived being in Auschwitz Concentration Camp during World War II.

If you would like to discuss this further please send me an email at susan@susanrosin.com or send me a message on Facebook. I’m happy to share all I know and see around it!

WALKING FOR EXERCISE DURING A PANDEMIC

Exercising anytime is important and it’s particularly important during a pandemic like we’re experiencing right now. We all need to support our immune systems to be able to fight off this disease and to be strong in case we actually end up getting it. Being over 50 makes us especially vulnerable so we need to do what we can beef up our immune system.

Because so many of us are at home most of the time that means that we are sitting more than usual, on our computers or watching something on our big screens. We are not socializing as much and we probably are just wearing our sweats and shorts (I know I am). It’s very easy to gain weight because we can’t go to the gym, exercise classes, and/or to the track at the local high school.

That’s why it’s important to go out and walk. I walk around my neighborhood every day and I’m lucky because it’s mostly all flat so it’s easy. If you can’t walk in your neighborhood then go some place close where you can walk. If you’re in good shape and you have some hills where you live you should try walking on some of the hills as it’s very good exercise to do. Start with short amounts of time and build up as you it gets easier to do.

This podcast goes through the long list of benefits you can get from walking regularly. Things like helping to ward off varicose veins, increased creative thinking, being in a better mood, keeping your weight in check, and a reduced risk of developing heart failure. Listen to it today (it’s not that long) and you’ll agree that with all of these benefits it’s worth putting on your walking shoes (that’s all you need) and getting outside every day.

If you are feeling sad, lonely, or out of balance because of the pandemic and/or how you have been affected by it please reach out to me as I am offering a free coaching session to anyone who needs some support during this time; there are no strings attached and no sales pitches. You can contact me at my Healthy Tips After 50 website or Facebook Page or you can send me a DM directly on Facebook.

Eating Enlightenment with Jared Levenson

Today’s podcast is very interesting. My guest is Jared Levenson and we talked about eating, Intuitive eating, Enlightened Eating, Comfort Eating, and a number of other kinds of eating. We talked about how to eat so you’re not hungry all of the time and how he works with clients to enable them to stop the constant all day hunger and be content. He has an interview on his website with someone he helped with her binge eating.

Jared and I both have an interest in and experience with meditation and specifically zen buddhist meditation and some of the meditation centers around Northern California where we both live. That led to our discussion about how meditation is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and he tells me about how he came to become an eating counselor and coach.

We talked about how I had lost a lot of weight when I was in graduate school and how my doctor had me count calories to lose the weight. We also talked about the early Weight Watchers as well as other kinds of diets and systems. You’ll understand a lot of what he’s talking about and how having a connection is so important to being healthy and happy. We also discuss how dieting has become such a big business and people keep looking for “the right diet” without realizing that getting a connection to yourself in order to succeed.

Go check out his website - he has blogs, a podcast, and an interesting opportunity to talk with him if you have questions or just want to know more. His website is https://EatingEnlightenment.com His podcast is also called Eating Enlightenment and you can listen to it on Apple Podcasts as well as right on his website. Check it out!

Memory Loss Misconceptions

There are a lot of things that many of us think of as truths around our memory and our brains. This podcast covers some of them. The first and most important one is that our memories are accurate. That is absolutely not correct!

Not only are our memories not accurate, they change every time we bring them up out of our brains. That explains, for instance, why you and your spouse never seem to agree on something you both saw, experienced, or participated in. It also explains why multiple “eye witnesses” tell different versions of the same event. Just because you think you saw it remember that you may be wrong!

Another one that gets a lot of play on TV and in books and movies is repressed childhood memories. Turns out there is no such thing. People who had early trauma experiences in their lives are not likely to either repress it and/or forget it. Interesting, huh? I talk a lot about Alzheimer’s and its connection with memories. But the truth is that loss of memory is not the first sign of Alzheimer’s. It’s actually the breakdown of judgement and decision-making as well as anxiety, irritability, or other personality changes. So watch for those in your loved ones, not memory loss.

There are some more examples I talk about and then I throw in my favorite diet to help you with any memory and/or brain issues - The Mediterranean Diet. There are just more and more studies showing how valuable it can be for so many areas of your health. The fact that you can have a glass of red wine each day as a part of the diet just seals the deal as far as I’m concerned.

Here are some Mediterranean Diet books that I really like if you’re looking for one. Mediterranean Diet Recipes by America’s Test Kitchen https://healthytipsafter50.com/Test-kitchen-Med-Diet Mediterranean Method by Stephen Masley https://healthytipsafter50.com/Med-Diet-Masley

Inside-Out Thinking: An Interview with Clesia Mendes

Clesia Mendes is a Speaker and Mindset Coach who has over 25 years of experience in the personal development world. She loves traveling and teaching a new paradigm of psychology that, in her words, “has been discreetly emanating throughout the world”.

I had invited Clesia to come on the podcast as a part of my continuing brain series of podcasts and because I felt that she could help me and all of you to better deal with the uncertainty and upheaval that we are all living in right now.

Covid-19 is creating a lot of stress and anxiety around our health and the health of the world. There are also protests, anger, and uncertainty in reaction to the murders of George Floyd and other men of color by the police over the past few months (and years).

Clesia and I talk a lot about these stressful issues as well as about the many levels of human reaction to them. Then we go down a level to explore the Inside-Out psychology, how it changes our relationship to ourselves and how we live in the world around us.

As a Transformational Coach, Clesiia is dealing with these issues on both a personal and a professional level. She tells us about what brought her to the Inside-Out philosophy and she explains the impact that it has had on her life and for many others who have heard her talks on the Principles.

BDNF - CREATING BRAIN NEURONS

Improving Your Brain with BDNF

This week’s podcast is one from the archives. As I’ve been doing this brain series I thought that this one about BDNF would fit in well. BDNF is something that many people in the health & wellness field have started using to wake up and improve their brains.

BDNF stands for Brain-derived neurotrophic factor and it is a protein found in the brain. BDNF is important for long-term memory because it creates new neurons in your brain. It is also found in the retina, kidney, saliva, prostate, motor nerve cells, and muscle.

BDNF is very important to our brain health and low levels of it can lead to Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Dementia, and Depression. One of the best ways to get more BDNF is through coffee fruit extract which is in a number of different supplements on the Resources Page.

I hope you’re enjoying this brain series and I will be continuing it for a few more weeks. Let me know if you have any suggestions on brain-related topics that you’d like me to talk about.

Food and the Brain - How They Impact Each Other

In putting this podcast together I learned so much about how food can affect our brains as well as how our brains control and influence satiety, overeating, and obesity. I found so many different kinds of studies dealing with food and our brain that I couldn’t even include them all.

Colorful fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, whole grains, avocados, oily fish, coffee, and green tea are so important to maintaining our brain health. Eating them is linked to better memory, cognition, and a lower risk of Alzheimers, heart disease, and strokes.

Obese people have been found to have similar brain activity patterns to people who abuse alcohol and drugs. It isn’t just a matter of not having any self-control. There is research trying to see if the same treatments for opioid addiction can be used for food addiction and obesity.

Another study is using “cognitive behavioral therapy” to help adolescents learn how to control their cravings for certain foods that are not good for them. It’s helping them to lose weight and improve their health.

Overall the Mediterranean Diet ticks off all of the foods that the studies have shown to be healthy and health maintaining - especially as we age! We can get away with eating a bad diet when we are young because our bodies are so much better at cleaning out the bad stuff. As we get older our bodies slow down and can’t clear junk out as easily. They need more of the good stuff to feed our health and our brains.

That’s where the Mediterranean Diet comes into play. It has all of the fruits, vegetables, grains, coffee, tea, and red wine that will make us happier and healthier because we will feel better. Check the podcast out and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did in making it. How healthy is your diet?? Comment below.

YOUR BRAIN & YOUR PURPOSE

This is the second show related to our brains and how we can improve them. Did you know that our brains like having purpose in our lives. A reason to get up in the morning, to do things, learn things, and figure things out. All of those give the brain exercise and improve health physically as well as psychologically.

We human beings work best in a community and having a purpose is a major part of being in a community. A defined life purpose (you don’t have to write it down) helps us be resilient when faced with adversity. Purpose also improves our cognition, helps to ward off Alzheimer’s, and supports better mental health in general.

In the Greater Good Magazine’s website there was a great article about How to find your purpose in life by Jeremy Adam Smith. He suggests that the reason people find it hard to find their purpose is because you feel isolated from others or from your community. He also postulates that human purpose “evolved” to more easily do things in a community that are bigger than what we could accomplish by ourselves. Isn’t that an interesting idea?

Smith identifies 6 specific things that can help you to find a purpose - I talk about each one in the podcast. I included that all in the show because I think that finding a purpose is especially important for those over 50. That is when we start winding down and we also think about or do retire. At that point it’s important to have something to replace our jobs and keep ourselves interested not just in life but also in helping others.

It’s a good time to look inside ourselves to see what we are at our core, in our innate self. To realize that we can live inside out instead of outside in - what I mean by that is to see who you are and what’s really important to you and live from there. Ways to Deal with Stress & Anxiety from Covid-19

This podcast is the start of a series where I’ll address the different issues that are affecting our brains during this difficult time. I’ve looked at some of these areas before but never as a whole and never in the environment that we’re living in today.

There are many different ways to deal with stress and anxiety and I talk about some of those in this podcast. In addition I mention a number of methods that I have done previous podcasts about that have even more information than in this podcast. I will also include links to these at the bottom of today’s show notes.

Today’s podcast gives some additional information about how stress, inflammation, and our immune system can work both for and against us. It can defend us in times of attack (stress) and it can create illnesses if the stress lasts too long (like auto-immune and inflammation related diseases).

There are positives and negatives associated with our Shelter-In-Place directives and our ability to work from home. More sleep, less exercise, more food, and more or less productivity depending on how you’re handling your staying at home life. I talk about yoga and tai chi being useful in calming yourself, getting exercise, and relieving stress. I have a link to my previous podcast about yoga down below.

Next I talk about a simple breathing exercise which will help you to ground yourself when you’re feeling stressed. And lastly I talk about more formal meditation practice - what it is, where you can find it, and what to expect when you start it. It’s wonderful but it takes daily work, a daily practice, and dedication to reap the benefits.

I also talked about the wonderful app called the UCLA Mindfulness App where you can listen to guided meditations. Those guided meditations can be a wonderful place to start a meditation practice - i.e. a wonderful way in with guidance from experienced teachers. You should definitely try it out. The link to it is below.

I hope this information is valuable to you and that you take care of yourself during this pandemic. Please take it seriously and protect yourself, your family, and your community. Wear your mask when you’re out (unless you’re exercising in a uncrowded space) and take care of your health!

Manage, Improve, & Heal Arthritis

Growing up I always thought that Arthritis was something you got when you were older and it didn’t go away. Now I’ve learned that you can actually not get it to start with and if you have it you can manage it, improve it, and actually cure it.

This podcast gives you information about how exercise can help strengthen your muscles and your joints which will improve your arthritis, if you have it, and will also set you up to not develop it if you don’t. But you have to do the exercise consistently and the right way, that’s where your doctor or physical therapist comes in. Yoga and Tai Chi exercise have both been found to be very helpful in pain reduction and improvement in coordination, balance, and body awareness.

The other part of that equation is your diet and the food you eat. It has been shown in multiple studies over the past 5 years that the Mediterranean Diet can ward off, improve, and/or heal both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The Mediterranean Diet is a very anti-inflammatory regime and arthritis is caused by inflammation so it makes sense that it can help your body to fight off the arthritis before you develop or heal it if you already have it. Here’s a link to my previous podcast on the Mediterranean Diet where I go into more detail than in this show. https://healthytipsafter50.com/mediterranean-diet/

I also mention the interview I had with my friend Louise Tyrrell. who is a yoga teacher and inspirational speaker based in Ireland. Louise is currently leading online yoga classes on her website https://louisetyrrell.com The interview show is at this link - https://healthytipsafter50.com/yoga-inspiration-grounding/

I hope you enjoy this podcast and both of the previous podcasts.

Learning From Previous Quarantines

Many of us are still Sheltering-in-Place while some places are starting to open up and in others people are creating a hazard by ignoring the public safety orders. This podcast is about how enforced isolation has affected earlier populations during and after the SARS, Ebola, H1N1 Influenzas, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, and Equine Influenza epidemics.

The studies included hospital and health-care workers, residents in the areas affected, and college students, faculty and their families. What they found was not surprising - people had continuing feelings of stress, fear, irritability, exhaustion, and anxiety. I’m sure that we will all experience some of these same feelings.

The majority of people who were quarantined due to the SARS epidemic were still avoiding people who coughed or sneezed around them and almost a quarter avoided all public spaces. Others were still depressed 3 years after the quarantine.

Isolation is not a new problem. 43% of older people (60+) have been found to to feel lonely and isolated and 1 in 4 Americans aged 65 or older are socially isolated. Isolation and loneliness have been linked to increased risk of early death, dementia, heart disease and other health problems as well as a 50% increased risk of dementia.

This is a big problem and the Covid-19 Shelter-in-Place / Quarantines is not going to be helping an already growing problem. If you know someone who is isolated and / or over 60 please call them on a regular basis and have a longer conversation with them.

Don’t just say hi and how are you, please ask them questions about what they’re doing, how they’re doing, and if you can help or do anything for them. You may be saving a life!

Leave me a comment and tell what you are doing to keep yourself balanced and grounded during this pandemic!

Here are some books that I would recommend reading to help you not only get through, but also become stronger, during this Covid-19 time:

Clarity by Jamie Smart
Bright Light by Dee Wallace
Power vs Force by David R. Dawkins
Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton
The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World by Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, and Douglas Abrams

And some movies I love (oldies but goodies):

The Music Man
Singing In the Rain
Anything by Francois Truffaut
Anything by Ingmar Bergman

Now May Be The Best Time to Declutter

*This is a repeat of a podcast from earlier this year but I thought it was very valuable to share again as we are all at home and it's probably a good time to clear up our clutter.*

How has clutter impacted your life? It’s a very controversial subject, especially with people at both ends of the spectrum – hoarders & obsessive cleaners. I am not a hoarder but do tend to be on that side of the middle point.

The article I quote from in the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter, included an interesting Q&A with Michael Tompkins, Ph.D. at UC Berkeley about clutter which I go through in the podcast. Tompkins talks about other issues that go along with large amounts of clutter – e.g. allergens and mold in areas that can’t or haven’t been cleaned in awhile. He also mentions the risk of tripping over the clutter and social isolation.

There are also some suggestions on how to go about decluttering which were helpful and that I have actually tried myself. Needless to say I also make quite a few comments during the podcast on my experience (past and current) with clutter and clean obsessions.

Let me know in the comments what your experience with clutter has been. They also mention Marie Kondo’s book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. You can get your own copy on Amazon at the link above.

A Glass of Wine Makes For a Healthy Life

This podcast is all about the many benefits of drinking one glass of red wine each day.

It also provides food for beneficial gut bacteria that stop the creation of gut bacteria which is a cause of atherosclerosis.

Changing Your Eating Habits for the Better

Today’s podcast is all about Intermittent Fasting, what it is, how to do it, and how it’s actually hit the mainstream. Seems to me that now is a good time to try Intermittent Fasting - you won’t have the usual temptations to cheat and/or give up.

I talk about 4 main types of fasting and a couple of other variations on those as well. The easiest (I think) to do is the Restricted Eating Window Diet (REWD) which the Harvard Women’s Health Watch Newsletter calls Daily Timed Fasting. That is eating usual food during an 8 hour timeframe and fasting for the other 16 hours of the day. That’s the kind that I do.

Then there is the 3:4 Diet where you fast for 3 days out of the week (24 hours at a time). I think that’s a bit more difficult to do. The Low-Calorie Diet where you limit your calories to 500-700 per day on 3 days a week. And the fourth type is a combination of the Daily Timed / REWD and the Low-Calorie diets. For that you do the 8:16 hour windows and limit your calories on 2-3 out of the 7 days per week.

Don’t forget to drink your usual amount of water and keep up your exercising, especially doing strength training. As I said earlier - being at home as we are now will actually make it easier to transition to Intermittent Fasting and build it into your daily life.

As always, if you have any special health issues you should check with your doctor / health professional before starting any of these diets. Please let me know if you try Intermittent Fasting and how it’s working for you. Eat Well For Heart Health

Today’s podcast talks about 5 types of food that are very good for your heart health. This is especially important during what is for many people a stressful and overwhelming time.

Keeping a good diet of healthy foods can help us to maintain a strong immune system. Stress is one of the hardest things on our immune system so we all need to remember to eat well, sleep well, and exercise regularly. The info in this podcast will help you to do the first part and can actually help you to sleep better as well.

If you’re a regular listener to my podcast you have probably heard some of this info before but I know that giving a reminder to everyone is always a good thing.

Plus there are a few extra tips thrown in for how to use and not use these foods. For example, how wonderful extra-virgin olive oil is but don’t use it at high heat because it can reduce the amount of antioxidants and Vitamin E in the oil. Put the extra-virgin olive oil in near the end of the cooking cycle to get the most value and taste.

Spend Less Time Worrying & More Time Doing!

Spending time worrying about things that happened in the past or may happen in the future is like throwing that time away. You can’t change the past and you can’t create the future until you get there. We should live our lives in the present - we can only influence the future once it has becomes the present.

Information from the Massachusetts General Hospital Mind, Mood, and Memory Newsletter suggests that we set up time periods during the day/evening to spend worrying. Scheduling it will make it more manageable and lower the amount of time that we spend pondering and worrying.

Spending a lot of your day worrying about anything takes up room in your brain leaving less for your memory, thinking, and doing. They suggest developing more mindfulness through meditation, playing an instrument, yoga, and/or physical activities (e.g. running, tai chi).

It’s really much more of an issue than any of us thought and we need to remember to breathe and relax while dealing with the COVID-19 virus because it’s easier to get sick if we’re stressed out about it all. Stay healthy and well as best as you can until it’s over.

Think of it as using and developing a muscle that will serve you well going forward in all areas of your life.

What do you think? Leave me a comment at my website Healthy Tips After 50.

Brain Booster Interview

Very interesting interview with Susan Gibson, founder of Vivolor Therapeutics. Listen to our conversation about what things can negatively affect your brain and what you can do to improve not just your brain but your overall health.

We speak at length about Susan’s F.A.S.T. model of describing the individual items that each of us should be watching out for as we get older and/or have memory issues.

Susan also talks about her mission, why she is so determined to help people improve their brains, and what she developed to do just that.

There was so much good information that I enjoyed every minute of the entire interview! I’m sure you’ll find it as interesting and valuable as I did.

Be sure to let me know how you liked it and what you learned that you hadn’t heard before. Also check out the Vivolor website (https://vivolor.com) - there is a wonderful graphic about the risk factors for memory loss on page 2.

Plant Milk vs Cow's Milk? Which is healthier for you?

It all depends on what you’re looking for. If you have cow milk allergies or soy allergies then the answer is pretty obvious - whichever milk you don’t have an allergy to.

The only thing you should look at in the plant based milks is the sugar content to make sure that it doesn’t have a high total sugar content. This can happen when the manufacturer adds additional sugar to satisfy the sweet tooth of the American public. I buy “unsweetened” milk and I would suggest you do that too.

My personal favorite plant based milk is coconut milk and my second choice is soy milk. But you can try them out and see what you like. Or you can stay with cow’s milk as there are really no studies that show any downside to it (unless you’re allergic to it like I am).

As an added Tip I included a newly (Dec 2019) published rating report of airline food and water by the DietDetective.com website. They looked at 11 domestic airlines and rated them all from 0 to 5 with 5 being the best.

The water study looked at 10 major and 13 regional airlines. No more coffee or tea onboard for me. Go to my website for more info on health topics. Healthy Tips After 50

Should You Care About the New Nutrition Label?

This is the first update since 2006 of the Nutrition Label on food products. You may have already seen companies using this new label. Most of the information is the same but there are some important changes.

Added Sugars are broken out from the Total Sugars, they took out Vitamin A & Vitamin C Daily Values and replaced them with Vitamin D and Potassium, and most importantly they enlarged and bolded the print for serving size and Calories.

Another change only shows Daily Value percentages for a 2000 calorie per day diet (dropped the 2500 listing). Overall it is a better label with more important nutrition information than the previous label. Hurrah!

Curious About Gray Hair?

Hair turns gray when the melanocyte cells stop being able to produce pigment called melanin. Interestingly the hair doesn’t actually turn gray - it’s white because it has no pigment. It just looks gray next to the hairs with color. Men get more gray hair than women and Caucasians get more than people of Asian and African descent.

Stress probably could make you go gray faster due to inflammation and free-radicals which affect the level of melanin. Smoking has been linked to premature graying because it also affects the melanin levels. Lastly, supplements aren’t of any value at this point to stop the graying of your hair.

For next week's show I'll have an interview with a health coach to talk about diet and healthy eating. Be sure to tune in and pick up some "healthy tips". As always check out my Healthy Tips After 50 website for more podcasts and some suggestions on products to support your good health.

Good Posture for Strong Muscles

Posture-related muscle weakness and rigidity can develop as you get older. Poor posture can affect your balance, strength, and flexibility and lead to chronic pain. There are many exercises that can help to improve your posture. Not surprisingly yoga is good for improving your posture, it seems to be good for everything! Tai Chi is also good for you.

You want to strengthen your upper body, arms, back, and abdomen to help hold your torso erect. Get in the habit of checking your posture at all times, no matter what you’re doing, but especially when you are eating, at the computer, driving, standing in a line to checkout or buy something. Check your posture at various times of day until you find that you are doing it naturally and don’t need to adjust yourself anymore.

You can leave me comments, questions, and topic suggestions on my webpage Healthy Tips After 50 or on my Facebook Page. I very much enjoy hearing from all of you.

Managing Stress - Is It Possible?

Manage your stress to maintain longer term memory and brain capacity. Learn about how fast stress can injure your brain (it doesn't take very long) and what to do to avoid the negative consequences. Some stress is good for you - it's like exercising your brain and your vascular system. After a short stress period your brain and body should go back to normal.

A few things you can do to help you deal with stress are laugh, meditate, get a massage, and/or journal. Exercise is one of the best things for your body and your brain - pick one or many different ones - the important thing is to be consistent so find ones you enjoy!

BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor) helps your hippocampus to create new brain cells. You can help increase your BDNF by exercising (there it is again), social interaction, cultural activities (plays, movies, museums, etc.), as well as coffee fruit extract (not beans). There are various supplements these days that include coffee fruit and I've included a few Amazon links to them below.

100% Pure Hawaiian Coffeeberry Coffee Fruit Extract (Coffea arabica) (1oz)

Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Organic Brain Health Memory & Focus for Adults 40+

Coffee Cascara, CATURRA TEA, Natural Focus 120g Organic

Short Days Got You Down?

SAD (seasonal affective disorder) is a type of depression that is caused by the shorter days of late fall and early winter. The symptoms are similar to those of typical depression - feelings of hopelessness, fatigue, loss of interest in activities they usually enjoy, difficulty concentrating, etc.

The difference is that SAD only happens seasonally not all year round. Doctors usually prescribe antidepressants and/or light therapy depending on how severe the symptoms are.

There is also a less usual type of SAD which occurs in the summertime but there is less known about that and staying out of the daylight is one of the suggestions given for that.

I also talk about the Free 5-Day Training, Say Goodbye to Overwhelm, I'm running January 15-19 in Facebook. Here's the link to sign up for Say Goodbye to Overwhelm.

Closing Out 2019

  • 3 new items of interest to bring 2019 to an end.
  • Green Tea Extract (GTE) as a supplement has been used by a lot of postmenopausal women to try and lower their breast cancer risk. A NIH-funded study found that instead of reducing cancer risk GTE actually raised the risk when compared to a group taking a placebo whose risk went down. A separate study had previously found that high-dose GTE in weight-loss supplements can cause liver damage.
  • The second item is that there is an increased risk of Dementia associated with a class of medication called "anticholinergics" (I mangle the pronunciation of that word in the podcast). Those medications vary from the well known, Benadryl, Paxil, & Dimetapp, to a number I'd never heard of including Toviaz, Urispas, Desyrel, & a few others. If you are taking an anticholinergic drug then you should go and talk to your doctor about changing to another medication if possible.
  • Number three I included in honor of the New Year - Should you make New Year's resolutions if you are likely to break them? The answer isn't a clear yes or no. It depends on whether you keep making the same one each year and never get it done. In that case you should probably look at what is stopping you from achieving your goal and address that first. Starting the new year with a new goal can improve your mood by activating your brain's pleasure centers. But in general, you should be able to set and achieve goals any time of the year.
  • Lastly, I shared my intention for 2020 which is to start doing interviews with other people who are in Health & Wellness. That includes not just people involved with Health but also others who work in Wellness, as in improving one's overall life which would then also improve your Health. It's going to be an exciting year ahead! I'm glad you're here and would appreciate you telling your friends and family about the podcast. I really want to expand and improve the Healthy Tips After 50 Podcast! Don't forget to go and check out the Healthy Tips After 50 Website for additional information.

Meditation for Calming Fearful Memories

Volunteers trained in Mindfulness Meditation were able to break their "anxiety habit" caused by fearful memories. In this study the researchers used "safety memories" to help the participants in conjunction with the mindfulness meditation to do this.

They also learned through mindfulness how to stop judging their own thoughts. Overall the meditation group did better than the control group who used exercise based stress management. Meditation classes are available in many community centers, spiritual/buddhist communities, senior centers, YMCA's, etc. You can easily find one near you.

There's a short "holiday" tip having to do with wrapping gifts and creating expectations. Don't disappoint the person you are gifting by wrapping your gift "inappropriately".

Breast Cancer and Hormones

  • New research in the Lancet show a stronger connection between Menopausal Hormone Therapy (MHT) and Breast Cancer.
  • The risks go up starting the first day of going on MHT. Expert recommends a limit of only 1-2 years on MHT and then don’t just stop them, gradually lower the dosage
  • Women should try non-hormone strategies first before going on MHT. Vaginal estrogen is not an issue so can be used for longer periods of time.
  • Also, information included about giving all women with breast cancer genetic testing. Currently only those with a family history get it done.
  • It’s expected that it could save money in the long run by being able to provide better health care to those women.

Food & the Brain

Listen to the podcast to learn about the info below and a lot more...

Willpower may not be the reason that many overweight or obese people can't stop overeating. There are many studies that show a relationship between the brain and what are called "food cues".

Advancement in genetic tests, brain scans, and research into dependencies and drug addiction are showing why some people can't lose weight on the usual "diets" like calorie counting and avoiding highly processed carbohydrates.

One study found that some obese people's reward pathways are very similar to those found in opioid-addicted people. All of these studies are helping to develop more weight-loss strategies which lead to health improvements.

Some additional strategies are at the end of the podcast for those who are overweight and just want to lose 10-15 pounds.

We covered quite a few different areas of health during our talk including:

  • Self-care and being your own health advocate
  • Adrenal fatigue
  • Gut health and the Gut-Brain connection
  • Stress and its effect

It's a very interesting interview and you'll learn a lot about both of us in the 30+ minute interview.

Lower Your Cholesterol

  • In a recent study (July 2019) the Portfolio Diet lowered cholesterol by 27%

  • This is a flexible diet that gives you 4 "food components" from which you pick low-saturated fat / low-cholesterol foods

  • This is not a weight-loss diet - it is for lowering cholesterol

  • If your cholesterol is very high you can combine this with a lower level of statin therapy

  • The original diet is plant-based but there are variations that allow for small amounts of lean meats and dairy products

  • I hadn't heard of this diet before but it does look like it would be another good way to bring your cholesterol down

  • You can get more information from your doctor or download this Portfolio Diet Infographic

Three Tips for Good Health

  • First let me apologize for the bad static on the recording. Won't happen again.
  • 12-year study of 26,000 American women.
  • Those who ate a diet very close to the Mediterranean Diet were found to have lower risks for inflammation as well as improvements in blood sugar, blood pressure, weight, and HDL cholesterol.
  • Next study tip is that moderate to vigorous exercise is associated in men with a reduced risk of getting Parkinson's.
  • Lastly, women with high social stress levels had lower bone density.
  • High blood cortisol levels are also associated with low bone density.

Longer Purpose-Driven Life

  • What it is: study authors defined it as having an aim in life and goals.
  • Study shows lower risk of death from specific causes:
    • Cardiovascular disease
    • Blood conditions
    • Overall
    • Digestive conditions
  • This was an "observational" study so association was not "proven".
  • The study authors cited 3 pathways that life purpose mainly works through.
  • Volunteering is cited as one way to develop a more purpose-driven life.

What I've learned about healing broken bones (and a short list of what not to flush)

  • You need to eat almost twice as many calories as you usually do
  • Your bones need lots of protein to mend any breaks or cracks - that's also true if you have osteoporosis
  • Other vitamins you need are Omega-3's, Vitamin C, Vitamin D3, and Vitamin K
  • I suppose you are wondering when I am going to say that you need Calcium - well you do but, and it's a big but, Calcium shouldn’t be taken by itself !!!
  • You need to take all of the Minerals together and in the right proportions. That means in the proportions that they come from the earth.
  • Actually, you should take Minerals even if you haven’t broken anything. There’s a link below and on my website's Resources page to the kind of Minerals I take - Trace Minerals.

Candid Talk About Stomach Acid

  • Most people think that stomach acid is bad for you but they are wrong.

  • Without stomach acid you can't digest your food or anything else you put in your stomach. That includes vitamins, medicine, and liquids (coffee, wine, etc).

  • There are pharmaceuticals that neutralize your stomach acid which leaves your food to sit in your stomach for far too long.

  • If you don't digest your food then you're not getting the amino acids, vitamins, and minerals from your food. Your supplements and any medications you take also won't get dissolved.

  • Listen to this podcast and learn where to go to remedy the situation and improve your health.

*Here's the link to Why Stomach Acid is Good For You by Dr. Jonathan Wright - it's the best money you'll ever invest in your health!

Hearing Loss, Dementia, & Alzheimers - Are They Connected?

According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), a part of the US Government's National Institutes of Health (NIH), they are connected.

There are numerous studies in PubMed showing that people who have hearing loss are more likely to develop dementia of any kind than those who have no hearing impairment.

People with hearing loss who don't get some kind of "intervention" such as a hearing aid or implant tend to have more brain shrinkage which also correlates with cognitive decline.

Listen to this podcast to learn more about the causes of hearing loss, getting your hearing tested, how to deal with hearing loss, and how to communicate with others who have a hearing loss.

You'll also learn why I especially wanted to share this information with others.
