Social media has influenced our way of life. kNOwBOX dance [a Dallas-based 501(c)(3) non-profit arts service organization] leadership—YeaJean Choi, Azaria Hogans, Reyna Mondragon, and Martheya Nygaard—co-host Dance Behind the Screen podcast a conversation series with people who have dance-related careers questioning the influence of social media in dance process, production, and publicity. On this show, they interview the top artists, scholars, and leaders about who they are, their careers, and the impact of social media on the dance world. Originally from Taiwan, Sandra danced as a soloist with Four Seasons Ballet and Wu-I Dance Company in Taipei. She toured nationally and internationally with a Broadway production of the King And I. On this episode your co-hosts YeaJean and Reyna interview artists, teachers, performers, and attendees at the annual Texas Dance Improvisation Festival (TDIF). Initially conceived of by Jordan Fuchs with the mission to share, inspire and challenge the improvisational dance community of Texas, TDIF was first co-hosted at TWU in 2009 by Fuchs and Sarah Gamblin. Since that first year TDIF has grown to include over 200 participants a year, including students, professors and professional dance artists from across Texas, the United States and as far away as Germany and Taiwan. Relying on a Coordinating Committee of university faculty and professional dance artists to produce the annual weekend festival, TDIF is hosted by a different Texas university each year. Through a lean organizational structure and the leveraging of university resources for the benefit of the wider university and improvisational dance communities, TDIF emphasizes financial accessibility, with participant registration fees for the three-day festival minimized as much as possible, and only recently raised to $20 total. On this episode, we go behind the screen of TDIF facilitating a roundtable discussion with Blake Nellis, Chrissy Nelson, and Lily Sloan of Big Rig Dance Collective. We uncover their varied career paths and relationship to dance and improvisation. We discuss and define improvisation in relation to processes, practice, and transferable skills. We share conversations on how the current issues of consent in relation to the #metoo movement affect the culture of improvisation. We unpack the evolution and offerings of TDIF.

On this episode your co-hosts Martheya and Reyna interview Lynn Lane. Lynn Lane is the founder/artistic director/sound artist of The Transitory Sound and Movement Collective (TSMC). Lynn has had a long history in the arts and is currently the official photographer for the Houston Grand Opera and the Alley Theatre. His work has been shown nationally and internationally in galleries/museums as a photographer, filmmaker and artist. His history of performance began in the early 90’s in the gallery scene and well as creating many site-specific pieces which now carries on through the TSMC. He is represented in New York for his furniture design and has served on the Advisory Board for the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (NYC). He has curated projects at the Anthology Film Archives (NYC), taught documentary filmmaking in conjunction with the NYC school district, written for International Documentary Magazine and was represented in London/NYC for his documentary work. Currently, Lynn’s focus is solely on his photography and the development of experiential work with the TSMC. After graduating with honors from Spelman College, she performed extensively throughout the U.S. and China. Shaté recently served as assistant choreographer for Tony award winning Dallas Theater Center's and ATT Performing Art Center's production of Hairspray: The Broadway Musical. Critics have called her “a talent to watch” and her movement has been described as “alone worth the price of admission.” Shaté is also a master instructor who’s taught thousands of students throughout the U.S. and abroad. He began releasing his work to the public during his sophomore year of college, and shortly after began to receive collaboration requests from the Georgia College departments of Theatre and Dance. Dat Nguyen a native from Vietnam, is a choreographer, photographer, filmmaker, and visual artist previously based in Salt Lake City, Utah. A Northern California native, Greta danced with the Norwegian National Ballet and in Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and San Francisco.
