Cooking is Connecting: Recent Episodes

Chef Kibby

If you have a child in your life who has experienced trauma (and after a worldwide pandemic, that’s practically all of us), there’s a good chance that they are living with chronic anxiety and worry that is hijacking their ability to form healthy attachments with those who love them most — including you.

I’m Chef Kibby, a biological, foster, and adoptive dad, and I invite you to learn how to embrace the inherent trust of the kitchen as we use the connecting power of cooking and eating together with our children to bring about healing and restoration — because while trauma is disruptive, cooking is connecting!

I am not interested in getting involved in the political debates and arguments that have followed the recent decision by the United States Supreme Court. However, I do think it’s important for people like us - parents and caregivers with a heart for children and seeing the Hunger for Connection in others - to talk openly and honestly about what the future holds in the wake of this monumental ruling.

Now more than ever before, you are needed…

  • by people in our communities who are hurting, scared, or angry about what has transpired,

  • and by women who are or may become pregnant and have to face a new, more limited set of options.

No matter where you stand on the political or ideological spectrum, I think you’ll agree with me that the Hunger for Connection can frame our thoughts and responses in a way that allows us to show grace and compassion even toward those with whom we disagree. That is my prayer for you, and I hope you find this episode encouraging.

As you make a regular practice of cooking and eating together with your child - and doing so from a place of connection, utilizing the four pillars of the Cooking is Connecting Mindset that we’ve talked about in recent episodes — you open up your child to experience the fifth and final mindset pillar, and that’s inspiration.

A connected child has the ability to begin seeing themselves differently: as someone who is seen, soothed, safe, and secure. This regulated emotional place allows this young person to not only be more present in their daily lives but to dream about what their life could become.

In this week’s episode, you’ll hear how you can continue to use the kitchen to round out this mindset shift for you and your child to inspire them to bigger, better things for their future (and not just in the kitchen).

Have you ever tasted something truly delicious and wondered to yourself, “what is that ingredient that makes this one stand out from all the others?”

Many good recipes have that one secret ingredient that takes the flavor profile to the next level. In the recipe for making children feel safe and loved, that ingredient is empowerment — and the most empowering thing you can do for your child is to give them a voice.

The kitchen is a great place to empower your child with choices - many of which have little to no bearing on the final product. Today, I’ll help you to identify how to use this perspective to guide your cooking process.

You’ve heard it said, “If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.” However, if you truly treated the kitchen this way, nothing would ever get cooked — and if you treat your relationship with your child this way, connection will never happen either.

The heat of the kitchen is more than just physical temperature; there is also an aspect of emotional heat that is just as powerful, if not more, when it comes to our ability to manage ourselves in order to manage others and manage to get food on the table. That emotional heat doesn’t lend itself to connection, but warmth does.

In today’s podcast, I want to encourage you in encouraging your child in the kitchen even when things are not going the way you’d hoped. It’s going to happen, so you might as well be prepared as to how to stay connected when there appears to be a disconnect.

Once you’ve invited your child into the kitchen (or allowed them to join you per their request), the next step is to direct them — to assign them a task or set of tasks, making clear the expectations you have for them. While this may not seem all that hard, we can easily fall into habits and patterns of speech and behavior that make the process of delegation one that keeps us separated rather than building connection.

How do you give direction that leads to connection? I have a handful of easy tactics you can use to do just that, and I hope you’ll reach out to me or share with your friends on social media (don’t forget to tag me!) which of the strategies I share in this episode worked best for your family.

I had a hard time putting together this week’s episode; there was a lot weighing on my mind - including the crisis in Ukraine.

In this week’s episode of the Cooking is Connecting Podcast, I am not getting political or taking sides or making any commentary on world events; however, I wanted to reflect on how news like this can impact our parenting and how we can practice mindfulness and attunement to the needs of our children amidst such turbulence.

How can you read a recipe with an eye for connection? Allow me to demonstrate!

In this fun & interactive episode of the Cooking is Connecting Podcast, you will hear a recording from a live room on Clubhouse where I not only talk about the connecting mindset in looking at recipes but demonstrate it by pulling several cookbooks off the shelf, flipping through pages to find any old dish I could make with a child and listing the potential tasks you could assign or perform together. After listening to me do it, I challenge you to do the same and let me know what you find.

Spending time in the kitchen with your child may come about on a whim, but it most often results from someone asking a question. It may be the child asking if they can help, or it might be you putting yourself in that most vulnerable position of inviting them to join you.

In this episode of the Cooking is Connecting Podcast, you and I will walk through the relational effects of asking something of your child rather than commanding, demanding, or even suggesting they behave a certain way. We’ll break down the possibilities to help relieve our fears and see how giving a child the opportunity to refuse can actually help to build connection.

Life is full of distractions. You have a lot on your mind and an endless variety of people and screens and other shiny things all duking it out for your attention. Some things are (SQUIRREL!) important and valuable while others are fleeting and forgettable.

In today’s episode of the Cooking is Connecting Podcast, I am giving you permission to remove distractions - good and bad - from your mind and your environment so that you can be fully-present with your child and able to offer to them your undivided attention and compassion while spending time cooking and eating together.

You do a lot of compassionate things for your child — you work, put a roof over their head, keep the kitchen stocked (as best as you can with these munch-monsters), and stay up after they go to bed to take care of even more things they’ll never think about and for which they probably won’t show much gratitude.

In order to truly grow your child’s trust and felt safety, compassion needs to be seen and expressed in relationship — and nothing hits home like the deeply-embodied sense of the body’s most basic needs being met by someone taking the time to prepare food for them. In other words, your child should see you cook.

Oftentimes, when we think about inviting our children into the kitchen to spend time cooking and eating with us, we think about how that is an expression of compassion toward them. We don't always think about showing compassion to ourselves.

As we begin this series on compassion in and around the cooking is connecting mindset, I think it's important for us to start with ourselves and how we can show ourselves compassion as a way of helping us to prepare for to be more attuned and present parents and caregivers for our children.

I can think of nothing more compassionate we can do for another person than to provide them with physical nourishment, which is why I believe it is the first and foremost pillar behind the Cooking is Connecting mindset.

In today's episode of the podcast, we begin an extended series on the first of five mindset shifts that need to happen in you for you to take full advantage of the shared act of cooking and eating together with your child to create deeper, more meaningful connection. We're going to begin to talk about compassion -- what it is and how we can develop it in ourselves and in our parenting relationships.

Can you tell me the five French mother sauces? Can you name four? I’m sure you know at least one.

Thought it may not be all that important to know the sauces that form the basis of classical French cooking, I believe it would be extremely valuable for you to know the building blocks for a healthy relationship with the kitchen and how to use it to create a healthier relationship with your child.

We begin Season 2 of the Cooking is Connecting Podcast by introducing you to the idea of the Mother Sauces of Connection: five mindset pillars that have practical, meaningful applications in the shared act of cooking and eating together with your child.

Are you tired of social media?!

As much as we all seem to rely on it to connect with others, I personally don’t feel like it’s doing a good job of living up to the expectation of creating meaningful conversations.

I want to connect with people like me - who are trying to do their best for their children and families, sharing what’s working and getting answers to what’s not working, without getting bogged down by ads and algorithms. Is that too much to ask?!

Thankfully, I’ve discovered a place where you and I can gather — without the ads, without the algorithms, without the noise — to talk, to listen, to learn, to share, and to encourage and support each other in this unique journey of parenting. I’m going to share what I’ve found with you in this episode along with what you can expect from the Cooking is Connecting Podcast in 2022!

There are many reasons for why we cook — to gather, to celebrate, to mourn, to serve. At the heart of all those reasons is a deeper sense of empathy.

Nothing is more powerful in building and restoring healthy relationships between you and your child than modeling, nurturing, and growing the capacity for empathy - both for your child and for yourself.

In today’s episode of the Cooking is Connecting Podcast, I share with you 4 ways in which the shared act of cooking and eating with your child can be used to build empathy in your parenting.

Welcome to Cooking is Connecting. I’m Chef Kibby – a biological, foster, and adoptive dad who struggled for years wondering why my parenting wasn’t creating stronger attachments between me and my kids. This is a show about harnessing the inherent trust-building power of cooking and eating together with our children as a method to overcome the negative effects of trauma on the mind, body, soul, and relationships – because while trauma is disruptive, cooking is connecting.
